referee in a competitive match in england. good evening, we'll have the latest on andy murray's hip surgery in melbourne in a moment, but we are going to start in australia. in sydney it wasn't a whitewash but england have lost the ashes series 4—0 after an innings defeat in the 5th and final test match in melbourne this morning. they lost the fifth test by an innings and 123 runs. the urn returning to australian hands after a comprehensive win for them. patrick geary is in sydney. a storm has broken over sydney, but way too late to save england. they we re way too late to save england. they were done by mid—afternoon. coming to the ground today with only six
6:32 pm
wickets in hand, they knew this would be a tough day. for the captain in particular, it was sickening. england have had three weeks to prepare for these pictures but that will make them no easier to watch after a stomach churning series, queasiest of all, joe root who arrived at the ground having spent the morning in hospital with a stomach bug. moeen ali took his place, batted for an hour then met a familiar end, dismissed for the seventh time by nathan lyon. incoming, the outpatient, joe root nursed himself to 50 but it was hard going. at lunch, he retired. his series ended not by an aussie but by his belly. australia removed jonny bairstow not long later, the rest was nasty, brutish and short. this was the sort of ruthless cricket that has allowed australia to dominate england and win the series with four big victories to none. emphatic stuff from australia, clearly delighted with their victory and keen to repeat it in two years
6:33 pm
in england. we heard from their captain, steve smith, and also from jimmy anderson, who stood in for the recuperating joe root. i do think it has been closer than 4—0. we've been on top in some games if not all the games at some stage. we've just not capitalised on key moment. all the guys are hurting, as much as i am. that feeling you get should make you determined to try and win the ashes back in 2019. it has been outstanding. everybody has had a role to play and had some impact on the series. you know, you see the two marsh boys, sean throughout the whole series, and mitch in the last one has been magnificent. all of the bowlers have been great. tim payne has been exceptional behind the stumps and scoring valuable runs at times. who
6:34 pm
ami scoring valuable runs at times. who am i missing? all of the guys have had an impact in the series. that is what has been so special about it. it hasn'tjust what has been so special about it. it hasn't just been what has been so special about it. it hasn'tjust been one or two guys stepping up and doing the job. you can't really win an ashes series when that is the case. it has been good that sony different people have stepped up at different times to help us win the series. —— so many different people. so what happened after the 25 days of gruelling ashes cricket? it began in brisbane with a century that set the tone for the rest of the series. england had a good session under the lights in adelaide, but it came too late, shaun marsh already made an important 100. perth, a shaun marsh already made an important100. perth, a ground shaun marsh already made an important 100. perth, a ground where they are always, it seems, u nsuccessful, they are always, it seems, unsuccessful, steve smith made another century. in melbourne, although england were competitive, they could not force a victory and it came too little, too late. in sydney, they missed their chance with the bat and let australia put ona with the bat and let australia put on a big first—innings score. what went wrong, what can they do to change this? who better to ask than

a man who has won an ashes series? i caught up with michael vaughan. pretty simple, they have not been good enough. if england want to be a tea m good enough. if england want to be a team that is not open and honest, if they want to be a team that is not realistic, say that. if it is pr spin, twisting to try to send some positivity, send that out to the public, that is not a problem, it happens in sport. privately, in the dressing room and a management room, they have to be dead honest. it has not been close. they have been hammered in four games. they have not had good enough cricketers for these conditions. those are the bare fa cts . these conditions. those are the bare facts. they have not have put enough bowlers, they have not had a world —class bowlers, they have not had a world—class spinner or front line spinner. the batsmen, they have flooded to deceive, they played nicely for periods, but they have not been good enough. if england wa nt to not been good enough. if england want to hang on to the coat—tails of those moments, and there was one or two, just one or two, the gulf in
6:36 pm
class between the england team and australia, in these conditions, is massive. 19 out of 25 they have lost in the 21st century in these conditions. they have to have a reality check and be realistic. to come back in four years and be competitive, if few things need to change. the selection process needs to change, the style of cricket required to be successful here, it has to start now. do you think england's attack was inadequate from the start? i do. italk england's attack was inadequate from the start? i do. i talk about a tool box. the captain is only good as the twill boxy has in his hand. joe root was missing a spanner and screwdriver, he did not have a spinner or quick bowler. his best player was in new zealand. that situation with ben stokes was very difficult for england to cope with. the best player is not here playing, he would have made a little difference but he would not change
6:37 pm
the outcome of the series. if you look atjimmy anderson, he is world —class, look atjimmy anderson, he is world—class, outstanding, one of our greatest, average of 27 with 17 wickets. my concern is thatjimmy anderson, stuart broad, a quality bowler, only got 11 wickets. they will not be here in four years. they 110w will not be here in four years. they now have four years development to compete when they will not have the two greatest partnership that has ever bowled for england. where next? for many of the players they will be playing a one—day series here in australia. in the summer, they have a test series against india and pakistan. at home, england are still a strong side. they will be looking ahead to the 2019 ashes series in england, and then the next one in australia in 2021. we might see some of the same players involved, we might see the same captain. but a lot else in english cricket may need to change in order to make them competitive over here. well we heard former captain michael vaughan there talk about the need for england to find more pace bowlers that can throw the ball down at 90 mph—plus. well we sentjoe wilson to loughborough to find out how the search for the next bob willis is going. after the ashes defeat, if the issue
6:38 pm
for english cricket is finding new fast bowlers who can bowl at 90 miles an hourand fast bowlers who can bowl at 90 miles an hour and quicker, where do we find the answer? maybe in loughborough. english cricket's performance center. the most talented young fast bowlers are meeting and training here. they will go off ona meeting and training here. they will go off on a warm weather camp towards the end of the month. the man running the programme says there are already 90 mph english young bowlers ready, hopefully, to be selected. jamie overton, we know he can bowl in excess of 90 miles an hour, mark wood, george, we have some of the young lads on the pace programme that have already clocked over 90 mph in testing at loughborough. i am over 90 mph in testing at loughborough. iam really over 90 mph in testing at loughborough. i am really confident that we have 90 mile an hour bowlers. it is notjust about pace. you have to look at the best bowlers
6:39 pm
from the past, glenn mcgrath, shaun pollock, those guys bowled in fantastic areas, very skilful. vernon philander. there are fantastic bowlers out there that are successful in test match cricket, they don't bowl at express pace. it doesn't mean we are not working for them. we absolutely are. andy murray finally gave up on traditional rehab to fix his hip injury. today, he underwent surgery. he travelled to australia with the intention of making his competitive comebacks, but he is now targeting a return in the grass court season next summer. andy murray went down under, hoping to reignite his career at the australian open. after pulling out of the tournament before it had even started, he has undergone hip surgery to rescue his career. he has been troubled by the injury since wimbledon last year. he tried to get back to his best through rehab but after pulling out of a tournament in brisbane last
6:40 pm
week, he opted for an operation to solve the problem. the surgeon is very happy about how it went. and in a statement, murray says... the former world number one feels that if he can return to 95% of his best, it will be enough to compete again at the highest level. andy murray can probably be at 95% and beat 95% of the tour, but he needs to be at 100% to beat this generation of players. so when he talks about the possibility of being 30, 35 in the world and playing just to compete, that is how much he wants to play. andy murray told his fans on social media that... "the little kid inside mejust wants to play tennis and compete." he hopes to be hitting balls again
6:41 pm
in a couple of months, but has stressed he is not interested in coming back for a specific tournament. but when he does, he is aiming to get back to the highest level. well in the last couple of hours murray has posted a picture of himself on instagram. he says "i'm feeling really positive and looking forward to starting rehab. a different type of rehab, obviously, getting over that surgery. "thanks to everyone for the well wishes and support the last few days. it really helps." we had a conference call with some tennis writers today. russell fuller was one of them and spoke to my colleague, jessica crichton. andy murray went into quite a bit of detail about how he decided to have the operation. he visited a surgeon he has been consulting on and off with for the last ten years in
6:42 pm
melbourne, instead of flying back to the uk. he decided he would remain in australia and the surgery was carried out at breakfast time this morning in melbourne. he will stay in australia for another week before flying home, beginning his rehabilitation in earnest. he has been told he could expect to be on court hitting balls in seven to eight weeks. the general guide for somebody that has had this kind of surgery somebody that has had this kind of surgery is that maybe you can return after 1a weeks. he is targeting the grass court season. after 1a weeks. he is targeting the grass court season. he says possibly he will be able to return a little bit earlier, but only when he is fit. he stresses he is not targeting one particular tournament. he is not going to play wimbledon come what may. this is major surgery. we know in the short term that he hopes to come back in the summer. what long—term effect could this have on his career? his surgeon says that the operation went very well. murray has been talking very optimistically from his hospital bed earlier today. he would be the first to accept that
6:43 pm
there are no guarantees exactly how successful a surgery will be, how the rehabilitation will go. but having been so down about his plight last week, when he realised after six months of rehabilitation he would not be fit to compete in brisbane or the australian open, he is certainly a lot more upbeat having had the surgery. he thinks he can get back to 95% of his level, and then he would be able to compete again at the highest level. that remains to be seen. but he does make the point that at wimbledon last year, as he says, i could barely walk, and he was in a lot of pain, he still did get to the quarterfinals and came very close to beating sam querrey. he certainly has not written of winning more big titles. russell fuller, speaking to my colleague jessica titles. russell fuller, speaking to my colleaguejessica crichton earlier about andy murray's hip surgery earlier about andy murray's hip surgery that he has had today. phillipe coutinho has completed his move from liverpool to barcelona. he has signed for five and half years and the 25—year—old brazilian playmaker has cost the club £142 million. and it brings to end a saga that's been running since last summer
6:44 pm
when coutinho initially handed in a transfer request when barca came calling, but today he had this message for his former club. i gave everything i could. u nfortu nately, we i gave everything i could. unfortunately, we could not win. i lived there five years, my family was very lived there five years, my family was very happy there. i guess we would like to thank you again, and we showed the best for them. let's speak to the spanish—based football expert andy west philippe coutinho has been on their radarfor philippe coutinho has been on their radar for the last six or seven months since the transfer request came in, and barcelona came courting. what kind of excitement is there that they have finally got
6:45 pm
their man? a lot of excitement from their man? a lot of excitement from the club. as you say, they have been very doggy thing going for him, not put off by the fees spiralling from what they initially hoped to pay, and having to wait, because they tried in the summer. the club are pleased to get him, the fans are as well. 7000 people came to the stadium, not bad for a working day, to greet him when he was presented. some fans are wondering if he is the best option, and do we really need to pay that much of the acrimony? a lot of positive feeling, but a lot to prove, especially for that price. how will he feet in... fit into the team? —— how will he fit into the team. neymar left because he was in lionel messi's shadow. philip coutinho, to a lesser degree, has been the main man at anfield. does he slipped straight into the system? he does. but i think he will have to modify his game a little bit. as you
6:46 pm
mentioned, lionel messi is the main man at barcelona. there is no question about that. he will be for another three or four years. i question about that. he will be for another three orfour years. i think coutinho will have to play a little bit deeper in midfield to staff the play, rather than being the player around the edge of the box looking to make the final pass or take the shot himself. he has to start that and then supply messi. but he is versatile. that is an option. that is something barcelona like about him. he could play in a front three, but most of the time i think you will be in the midfield role. in the long term, they want to replace iniesta. he is nearly 3a and can only really play one game a week, maybe once a fortnight at best. they need somebody to share the load with iniesta and, eventually, to replace him. barcelona are going great guns, well clear of the top of la liga. is there a worry that his conclusion might disrupt that momentum?
6:47 pm
absolutely, not just might disrupt that momentum? absolutely, notjust his. they also have dembele, another £50 million signing that came in in the summer, got injured immediately and isjust coming back. before christmas, they won 3—0 at real madrid, great performance. they have got to add to that team two players that cost £300 million between them. they are not going to be sitting on the bench. where do you fit them in? it could disrupt the balance. that is something for the manager to think about. andy west coming barcelona, many thanks indeed. let's have a look at some of those big transfers leaving liverpool. fernando torres went to one of their big rivals, £50 million, a huge fee then for fernando torres when he left. suarez, four years ago, that
6:48 pm
was £75 million. he is going to link with coutinho. he has become one of the main reasons why barcelona are such a world force. now, eclipsing all of that, coutinho, £142 million confirmed today. at the moment, the second most expensive player in the world, behind neymar, whojoined last summer for paris st germain for £200 million. kevin mbappe, when he confirms that move from monaco, he will become the second most expensive, above philippe coutinho. a lot of social media reaction over the past 48 hours. jamie carragher‘s words of wisdom. we will see. of course, there is
6:49 pm
another three weeks or so from the january transfer window. let's take a look at some of the other stories making the sports headlines today. two—time champion victoria azarenka has withdrawn from the australian 0pen because of the ongoing custody battle over her 11—month—old son. azarenka can't leave california with leo until the dispute is resolved. another withdrawal — british number two kyle edmund has pulled out of the auckland 0pen because of an ankle strain. edmund had been due to play chung hyeon of south korea on tuesday. newcastle legend and current under—23s coach peter beardsley has met with club officials to discuss allegations of racism and bullying at the club. beardsley, who's been in his current role since 2009, is facing multiple complaints. and british heavyweight anthonyjoshua's unification fight againstjoseph parker could be confirmed this week. parker's promoter david higgins is due in london on monday, when he's expected to finalise
6:50 pm
details on the deal withjoshua's promoter eddie hearn. the fight is set for cardiff in march or april. it's the last of the fa cup 3rd round ties tonight, brighton against crystal palace at the amex stadium. should be a good one, lots of history between the two sides. for the first time in a completive match in england, the video assistanmt referee, var system will be used. that always excites our sports news correspondent richard conway. he is in brighton for us. a long time coming, how will it work tonight? well, it has been a long time coming. 18 months in development. there has been a worldwide trial of video assistant referee systems. there have been various leagues and tournaments over the past year and a half. it is tonight when we will see it in half. it is tonight when we will see itina half. it is tonight when we will see it in a competitive english fixture for the very first time. the referee can refer
