and a cold night to come, away and a cold night to come, especially across northern england, northern ireland and scotland, some freezing fog patches as well but then here is the big complication. some rain pushing in from the west. eventually bringing milder air but as the rain and it will bring snow and ice for a time for northern ireland and wales through the night, and that area of rain, sleet, snow and that area of rain, sleet, snow and ice will spread further north and ice will spread further north and eastwards during tomorrow. bear that in mind if your travel plans. this is the wet weather, sliding across wales, the midlands, northern england and up into scotland. anywhere from the midlands northwards, especially over high ground, we can see snow for a time, turning back to rain by the end of the day. it will be rain in the south—west because it will be very mild, 12 degrees in plymouth, and windy day as well. those milder conditions will wind out into the week ahead, but with that we see some spells of wind rain at times. this is bbc news, our latest headlines. the us government grinds to a halt on the first anniversary of president trump's inauguration — as the senate fails to agree on a budget to fund many public services.

newcastle united beat them at their own ground, that ground was main road and alan shearer was playing up front. they created a surprise early chance but lacked shiraz style benching. guardiola's side took control after that, just a question of when city would score. when they did, some were asking how much contact aguero got an kevin de bruyne's cross. not too much debate about whether this was a penalty. and no dispute about the identity of the scorer this time, aguero's 21st of the season. usually, that would be that but out of nothing, the visitors responded. excellent finishing from jacob murphy. briefly, the match looked like a contest. but normal service resumed at the other end. it looked like leroy sane was going nowhere but he found a way through to aguero for his 11th manchester city hat—trick, manchester city's record scorer. the march to the title continues, iii league games to go and i2 march to the title continues, iii league games to go and 12 points clear again. drew savage,

chelsea are back to winning ways in some style, beating brighton 4—0. we will discuss the match in a moment but first, let's see the goals and the report. a minute's applause to mark the death of cyrille regis, who passed away last sunday at the age of 59. the players in black armbands to honour the former england international, widely regarded as a pioneer, who helped break down racial barriers in the game. brighton were hosting the premier league champions, chelsea, who were missing a number of first—team regulars through injury and suspension. one man who was playing was eden hazard. and it didn't take long for him to make his mark. three minutes later, half the brighton team could do nothing to stop this intricate passing move. the brazilian international, willian, with a well worked goal, which again involved hazard. and things didn't get any betterfor the home side, who felt they should have had at least one penalty in the first half. brighton did have their chances after the break, but it was that man again, hazard. a brilliant solo effort to put antonio conte's side 3—0 up
7:37 pm
and on course for all three points for the first time this year. but they weren't finished just yet. victor moses making it four. an emphatic victory for chelsea. it was a memorable day for eden hazard, the man of the match, and perhaps even more memorable for this young fan. ade adedoyin, bbc news. john and i'm marvelling at the damage moses did to the pitch. the groundsman won't be happy! antonio co nte lata py groundsman won't be happy! antonio conte lata py but groundsman won't be happy! antonio conte latapy but there has been quite a lot of discontent at sta mford quite a lot of discontent at stamford bridge leading up to the game. —— looked happy. stamford bridge leading up to the game. -- looked happy. first win in 2018, five draws in a row if you count the win against norwich on penalties as a draw but without morata, they perform so well today, proved they could play without him, hazard and willian superb and decent performance from patchway, good afternoon for chelsea and you wonder if they will increase their efforts to signa if they will increase their efforts to sign a new striker. edin dzeko has been mentioned. a quick line on

brighton before we hearfrom antonio co nte brighton before we hearfrom antonio conte because they were hard done by a bit, 4-0 conte because they were hard done by a bit, 4—0 not really retrospective. they had a penalty appeal turned down, tried five at the back but it didn't work but they have not beaten chelsea since 1933 and it would a lwa ys chelsea since 1933 and it would always be difficult and antonio conte's side won the day. i saw important things. now we have to continue because don't forget, in the last four games, we have finished three games with 0—0. today, we scored four goals. i'm very happy. arsenal beat crystal palace 4—1. who needs alexis sanchez because he was not playing. they were 4-0 up after 22 minutes, palace were poor but great football by arsenal, the la cazette great football by arsenal, the lacazette goal in particular was superb, brilliant assist by mesut ozil. milivojevic got a goal back

really well ta ken, allen with the first, the second was really well taken, great team move, finished off by mame diouf, the likes of xherdan shaqiri looks like different players. paul lambert was very animated on the touchline, got into the game and got the fans behind the team. huddersfield are in bad form, have not won since mid—december but still a good win for paul lambert who was a happy man after the game. i thought the performance from start to finish was outstanding. we've only been in since last tuesday, three days training, trying to get as much into them as you possibly can without overloading the brain but their effort and drive and commitment along with the support was huge. i thought we looked really good. their next game, everton against west brom, 1—1, so many talking points but mostly, james mccarthy with a nasty broken leg. and horrendous injury, he will be out for a long time and we wish him well. most of the players were really u pset well. most of the players were really upset with the incident. salomon rondon was in tears because it wasn't his fault but he was tackled by mccarthy, very unlucky.

the funny thing is, it was two goals in two minutes, bournemouth took the lead with fraser and thenjavier hernandez equalised for west ham, again, pretty fair reflection, even david moyes admitted it. let's see how the results have affected the top of the table. united close the gap and then they didn't because city were the winners but i suppose today's big winners are leicester. yes, left up to seventh. liverpool play on monday and spurs tomorrow so the pressure is on them, the race for the top four will be really close but it is the race to stay up at the bottom which will keep us interested towards the end of the season. stoke out of the relegation zone which is crucial for them. southampton going in, they play spurs and they lost 5—2 against them on boxing day. they have been struggling a lot recently. swansea play liverpool on monday. thanks, john. cardiff dropped points in their push

the defending champions. they are still part of the equation but it will be a nervous night's sleep awaiting tomorrow's results. james burford, bbc news. well, saracens' lifeline is at the expense of ospreys who lost 24—7 at pool leaders clermont auvergne. nick abendanon gave the hosts the lead. clermont led 13—0 at half time and although ospreys pulled that back to 13—7 with this well—worked move finished by ashley beck, the french side had pulled clear with a couple of penalties this try from luke mcalister finished things off. clermont auvergne finish top of pool b, ospreys are out. that means that scarlets are carrying welsh hopes now after becoming the first welsh side to qualify that the quarterfinals of the champions cup six years, beating three—time winners too long 30—27. what a match. tom brady, hadleigh parkes and dan jones what a match. tom brady, hadleigh parkes and danjones running in the

7:48 pm
here's the bbc‘s golf correspondent iain carter. yes, a lot of british interest on the leaderboard, especially when you consider that ross fisher coaxed in a tricky little birdie putt on the last for a round of 65, moving him to 17 under par and alongside the belgian, thomas pieters, at the top of the leaderboard. pieters was the overnight leader but rory mcilroy has moved into contention as well, chipping in on the 17th, suffering his only bogey of the week at the 15th but even so, it was a round of 65 from mcilroy and that has moved him to within a shot of the lead. and then a couple of players at 15—under par who are within two shots of the lead. matt fitzpatrick, who was round in the lowest score of the week, 63, and the defending champion tommy fleetwood is also in the mix at 15—under, two shots behind after an excellent 67. i think what will impact on it tomorrow is that we have had perfect conditions really for the first three rounds. the weather forecast is suggesting that there is going to be some
7:49 pm
wind and that really is going to test the players. as i say, they've been playing in perfect conditions with receptive greens. they have been making the most of the scoring conditions. tomorrow will be a different proposition. wind sweeping across, distance control will be difficult and it will certainly really test them as they come down the stretch. i wonder if that plays into the hands of somebody like mcilroy, with all of his winning experience. it's going to be a fascinating finish, rory mcilroy could well be the man to beat. defending champion roger federer is safely through to the fourth round of the australian open after beating richard gasquet. federer‘s yet to drop a set at this year's tournament. meanwhile there was an injury scare for the six—time champion novak djokovic. he needed medical treatment in his match against albert ramos—vinolas. he did win in straight sets but he wasn't at his best. this is his first event since wimbledon. his next opponent is chung hyeon, who's become the first south korean

australian sport is will smith, the hollywood actor. he has been at the tennis this week. along with will ferrell. they were watching nick kyrgios. he's been at the cricket as well. an he's clearly soaking up as much sport as possible whilst he's in australia, because he showed up at the big bash to watch the melbourne stars match with sydney thunder, a flashback to his old fresh prince of bel air days here with australia batsman usman khawaja and it was his thunder team that ran out winners. england batsmanjames vince hit a0 as they completed a seven—wicket victory. something is obviously going on in australia, they are filming something, probably. he's promoting them, i think. let's round up some of the day's other sports stories now and history was made at ascot as un de sceaux won the clarence house chase for a record third time.
