of detail, nearly an hour, explaining he had done nothing wrong. he came across to me as a school principal who was given a lesson on how politics should be handled, which give a sense of the tone of the conversations he has been having behind closed doors with anc officials. he insists he has done nothing wrong and some say he might have a point. this is the same party that defended him through those various motions of no confidence i mentioned earlier. he feels that if you have stuck with me until now, what warrants me being pushed out so abruptly now? thank you very much indeed. the leader of the democractic unionist party, arlene foster, has said there is no current prospect of a deal to restore power—sharing in northern ireland. mrs foster said attempts to find a stable resolution had been unsuccessful. the dup and sinn fein have been locked in negotiations in a bid to end the 13—month stalemate at stormont. let's get more now from our

ireland correspondent chris page, who is in belfast. and entered this political crisis feels farther away than ever tonight. northern ireland has been without government for 13 months. today, arlene foster has been involved in negotiations for the last few weeks, she said there was no prospect of bringing back devolution. sinn fein blamed the dup per what happened, saying they had reached an accommodation with the dup leadership that they had failed to close the deal. i'm joined by a leader of one of the other parties, colum eastwood, from the sdlp. what are your thoughts on what has happened today? it is a serious and real crisis for our institutions, for the good friday agreement. we

should have some involvement in running northern ireland? the good friday agreement is underpinned by the idea that both communities here, both nationalities you have to be respected. the idea that we could have the dup and the tory party running northern ireland is against all of those agreements. the irish government has to have a strong and real role in any decisions being made. the british government need not think they can ring in budget to make decisions you about the irish government's involvement. the key sticking point has been this all important issue of an irish language act. basically, nationalist parties once and you lot to protect their irish language act and unionist, to simplify it. every look at the detail of what was being proposed, let's see those proposed deals published so that all of the public can see. it is about protecting minority language that is all it is and should be nothing to fear from that. where do you see things going

from here? for the time being, is this it? it is very serious, very dangerous. we can't play around with these institutions, our peace process. we need both governments to step up. the irish government cannot be ignored in this. if the dup and the tory party think they are going to run northern ireland on the room, that will be resisted and it will be resisted by democratic ireland. thank you. the northern ireland secretary has been doing her best to strike a positive note, saying that she does still feel there is some sort of basis for an agreement. she will update parliament next week. time for a look at the weather. it has been yet another day of rain
