to be an olympian. but i ended up going, doing my best, and coming home with a gold medal. and i was a normal kid from kent. commentator: absolutely stratospheric. the fact remains, if you want to excel in winter sports, you have to travel abroad. there are some olympic sports which are far easier to play in every town and city in great britain. like this one. british basketball has even been discussed in the house of commons recently. it has mass participation amongst young people but isn't considered likely to win olympic medals, and so doesn't get uk sport funding. we are in danger of losing national teams. it's got to be looked at now. it's notjust re—evaluating, not just talking about my sport, talking about all sports, the way they are funded. we are at a crucial point. some sports are given huge amounts of money and it is a very low participation sport.

uk sport exists to turn lottery money into medals, which everyone enjoys. but, like sliding on ice, the secret to funding may well be balance. joe wilson, bbc news, heathrow. that's it from me. here on bbc one, it's time for the news where you are. hello and welcome to sportsday — i'm holly hamilton. coming up on the programme: welcome home to the stars of this year's winter olympics, as team gb return to the uk. is this the end of ryan wilson's six nations? the number eight is cited for alleged foul play during scotland's victory over england. and living on easy street — former arsenal striker ian wright's damning criticism of his former club. hello and welcome to the programme and after sliding, skiing

been all right. hoping to put snowboarding on the map. hopefully people will give it a shot. i did not expected. i would have been happy to make the finals, but i landed two of the best tricks i have ever done, so happy days. the success ever done, so happy days. the success at the games this year will be an inspiration to others to take an interest or take up a winter sport. lizzy yarnold retained her gold in skeleton. i spoke to her earlier. you have done this before. what is it like to come back here when you are greeted by your friends and family at the airport? it is com pletely and family at the airport? it is completely overwhelming, you don't realise how much the nation supports you until you walk in, and people ask you for selfies, and they say they were screaming at the tv, which means so they were screaming at the tv, which means so much. how about reflecting
10:35 pm
on the success of the team, how do you look back on that? even if an athlete came forth, did not quite live out their dreams, everyone should be so proud because this moment, going to the winter olympics isa dream moment, going to the winter olympics is a dream that people have held for four or eight years. that is a lifetime of horrible training, they have done their best. i am proud of everyone, and to bring home five medals between us is a huge achievement. have you got another winter olympics in you? it is a hard question to answer at this time, but i'm enjoying the rest, enjoying showing people these medals. it is the first time i have worn them together. we will see what happens. there is some time for rest and they catch up with friends and family for tea m catch up with friends and family for team gb. for some of these athletes, there is a big decision ahead. well they have the funding at deflation to carry on to the next winter

i want arsenal to start to challenge again, iwant i want arsenal to start to challenge again, i want us to start signing players who make it exciting again. we wa nt players who make it exciting again. we want someone who is going to lay down the law to people and the new manager, whether that will be, and the players who were now on easy street. some of them are renting out properties on easy street! it will ta ke properties on easy street! it will take them a few years to get back into that because everybody is progressing and moving forward, all of them. now some "great news for celtic, but sad news for scotland" — well, that's how brendan rodgers described scott brown's decision to step away from international football. brown says he feels he can no longer give his all for both club and country, and that's why he's ending his international career. jane lewis has more. flexing his muscles for club, but no longerfor flexing his muscles for club, but no longer for country. after 55 caps, round has bowed out. in a statement, he said... great news for celtic, it is sad for

the scottish team. going forward, a year is at that stage in his career where he wants to extend it at club level with the games he has. it is a sensible decision. he made his debut for scotland in a friendly against the usa on the 12th of november 2005. his competitive debut came against georgia in march 2007. as he became an influential player for his country, he was made captain in 2013. in 2016, he retired from scotland duty and had to be lured back two
