i million nhs workers in england are set to receive a pay rise worth at least 6.5% over the next three years. the agreement includes nurses, midwives and paramedics, as well as the lowest—paid staff, such as porters and cleaners, who are in line to get an increase of 15%. joining me now from westminster is the conservative mp maria caulfield, a former nurse who has been campaigning for the nhs pay rise. good evening. is this the offer that he wanted to see on the table? actually it is more than i was expecting, to be honest. it's a big pay rise and it's more than just a pay rise and it's more than just a pay rise, it's looking at those who are owning the lowest amount in the nhs, you know, the borders and the clea ners nhs, you know, the borders and the cleaners and the back—office staff —— the borders. it is a huge step
6:53 pm
forward , —— the borders. it is a huge step forward, not just about —— the borders. it is a huge step forward, notjust about pay. we heard from jeremy hunt, the secretary of state, in the house of commons, that it is about shared pa rental leave, commons, that it is about shared parental leave, better use of annual leave, much bigger package thanjust a pay rise. i worked as a nurse under the paid freeze and pay cap. and there was real understanding from colleagues. we saw european nurses coming here to work because they were being made redundant because their economies were performing badly. so we recognised times were tough but after seven yea rs, times were tough but after seven years, the appetite for a pay cap was wearing thin and that is why with the rcn there has been a lot of work done to get the pay rise and i'm pleased that the government has listened and they are rewarding as for hard work. you will be aware of the number of people walking away
6:54 pm
from nhsjobs. the number of people walking away from nhs jobs. according the number of people walking away from nhsjobs. according to figures from nhsjobs. according to figures from last year 33,000 nurses walked away. they were not going to come back just because of away. they were not going to come backjust because of this better offer. looking at the figures from the register, around half of those are due to retirement and that is why it is so exciting that there has been an announcement this week of training more nhs staff. five new schools going to be opened and in my own area brighton university have announced an apprenticeship scheme launch. so there is a lot of effort going on but there are a significant number of nurses who have retired and the numbers reflect that. but there are more doctors and nurses than ever before coming through. that is why part of the package is not just about a but also working conditions because retention is also as an important as recruitment. pay
6:55 pm
is important but working conditions equally so. that is why the secular state has looked at things like fixable working, annual leave, shared parental leave. they are important to staff as well. a number of people walked away because nothing changed in time for them, and they will not be tempted back despite what has happened today. some of the announcements are looking at making it easier for people to come back into the house service. i know from my experience that people who take time out may be too careful relatives or who do want a break because it is a difficult job in the nhs, if they want to come back it is extremely difficult. some of the announcements made today about returning to practice will make that easier. so people who want to come back to the health service, we will make it as easy as possible for them to do so. maria caulfield, thank you for coming on. the conservative mp maria caulfield. america is known for electing celebrities into office — donald trump, ronald regan,
