on that. ed barberini from san diego police department south of san francisco where the shooting took place this evening. our correspondent peter bowes is following the story for us in los angeles. peter, what is striking both from hearing the police chief and from the witness we spoke to just about 20 minutes ago is the speed with which police responded to this call. the police were there within minutes. this all took place shortly afternoon, midday local time, and the authorities on the scene very quickly indeed. we've just heard a small part of the timeline, how the authorities went inside, found some people with wounds, and found this woman who, it's believed, was the person who carried out the shooting with what seemed to be self—inflicted gunshot wounds. several taken to hospital, at least four people we understand taken to hospital, one said to be in a critical condition. still an intense
11:04 pm
situation with security suites continuing. we first heard about this through social media as people inside their offices were tweeting about the confusion around them, how they were taking shelter within their own space, within their offices, and then eventually managed to walk outside the building, hands above their heads, they were frisked by the authorities and then there was a period of time and always when we hear reports of shootings, families say this is the most intense and difficult time when they simply don't know what's happening, and about half an hour ago authorities finally confirmed they had someone with self—inflicted gunshot wounds who was believed to be the shooter and people taken to hospital. we're seeing live pictures of the outside of the building, an aerial view showing the haste with which the furniture has been turned over, a shopkeeper i spoke to earlier said it was lunchtime when
11:05 pm
this happened, a lovely spring day, and people going out eitherfor a smoking break or a meal break, wandering outside the building, one person inside said it sounded like they thought it was an earthquake, they thought it was an earthquake, the sudden noise of the sound of people running out of the building. do we have any indication whether the woman, if she is responsible, the woman, if she is responsible, the woman, if she is responsible, the woman who has died, whether she was actually already in the building 01’ was actually already in the building or someone who got into the building? we don't know for certain. people have been speculating about that, perhaps she was an employee because clearly security at a building like this is extremely tight, it would make it perhaps difficult for someone to come in from the outside with a gun, but we simply don't know. those details haven't been revealed. but what you say about the campus, absolutely right, i've been to these silicon valley campuses, their sprawling places with often very nice outdoor

lunch areas, beautiful california weather, people would be sitting outside enjoying the lunchtime break, and something like this would come out of the blue and it does explain the tweets and the social media messages we heard describing the confusion as people ran around not knowing what happened. peter, can you update us on what we know about others who may have been injured in this incident? we understand, and the precise numbers aren't clear, but at least four people taken to hospital, local hospitals, and we hear that at least one of those people, one of the injured, is in a critical condition, the others have serious gunshot wounds. no more details and certainly no names have been released at this stage. peter bowes in los angeles, thank you very much. a short time ago i spoke to hugh burnham, who is on lockdown in a grocery store across the street from youtube's headquarters. basically what it was his eyesore a

motorcycle policeman running up the stairs right on the entrance of youtube .com and that is the thing that drew my eyes, you don't normally see someone coming on running and he had his weapon drawn and within seconds after that a patrol car arrived. i'd see the shooter, i didn't hear these shots but almost immediately we saw people running up from the floors below us down below whether they were going for a smoke break or something, or outside for lunch, it was our lunchtime at the time, running in and hearing anything from ten to 20 shots being fired and immediately oui’ shots being fired and immediately our security were excellent, they locked down the building straightaway, and made sure no one was allowed to go near the windows and go outside or anything like that. hugh, i guess you have a lot of customers coming into the store from the youtube headquarters? i'm not in the store, i'm in the corporate headquarters. forgive me.
11:08 pm
that's all right. the youtube guys, all of us, there's a little mall across the street where we all go for sushi and stuff, there's a lot upstairs. it was really quite amazing to see the response time from the police because you don't really see this area of the city... it's pretty near the airport and that sort of stuff. the police cars came within minutes. they were saying within two minutes of the first call. any idea how much longer you may have to stay where you are? we just you may have to stay where you are? wejust got a you may have to stay where you are? we just got a notification from our internal security team that we're allowed to get back to our cubicles and get back if we want to, we can go to the meeting rooms as well if we wa nt go to the meeting rooms as well if we want to. it looks like it has been dropped down in severity. it was pretty surprising to see police arrived and all of a sudden they have automatic weapons drawn and running what looked like a perimeter around youtube offices and escorting

11:10 pm
on social media they thought there was an earthquake because the noise of people running was so loud inside before they knew what was happening. there was a number of gunshots. it's not clear whether some were fired by the police officers themselves but according to ed barberini, the chief of the local police, in a news conference, an impromptu news conference, an impromptu news conference he gave around 25 minutes ago now, when the police went inside they found two people, one person appeared to be with a self—inflicted gunshot wound and that person died at the scene. that person thought to be the shooter, was a woman, and one person with critical injuries is in a hospital in san francisco along with four or five others, it's not clear the others yet, have suffered injuries of some kind, they could be injuries of some kind, they could be injuries caused by getting out at speed, not necessarily gunshot wounds, they fall over and not into things, whatever. —— knock. police
