this is bbc news. i'm tim wilcox. our top stories: four people have died around 20 injured in the german city of muenster after a van it's deliberately driven into the crowd. the suspect shot himself in the vehicle. his identity is still unclear. police say they are treating the incident as an attack. it is not yet been confirmed though as terrorism. and in other news a bus carrying a junior ice hockey tea m bus carrying a junior ice hockey team has crashed in canada. 1a people are dead. hello. welcome to bbc news. let's start with our breaking story this afternoon. in the past couple of hours, four people have been killed
6:01 pm
in germany, dozens injured after a van plowed into a crowd in the northwestern city of muenster. the incident is being treated as an attack. it hasn't yet been confirmed though as terrorism. the driver of the vehicle is said to have shot himself. police say they are not looking for any further suspects. about 20 people are reported to have been injured, six are said to be in a critical condition. police also say that a suspicious object has been found in the van. a little earlier we heard from a policeman in muenster and this is what he had to say about the incident. the suspect shot himself in the vehicle. his identity is still unclear. there's some eyewitness accounts of other culprits, possibly having fled the vehicle, but we're still investigating this and do not yet have an in—depth understanding of
6:02 pm
what happened. very little information as you can see have emerged in precise detail apart from the fact of the number of dead and what we understand the van itself, which we think is a silver coloured van, the facts are as we understand that the driver of that man has shot himself dead shortly after the van came toa himself dead shortly after the van came to a standstill. 0kker to a mediaeval city, people out enjoying afternoon coffee and drinks —— muenster a mediaeval city. daniel witnessed the aftermath of the attack. he has been speaking to us. this is what he had to say. so, i've seen a lot of police presence. i think over 50 police cars and also some police helicopters were and are still in the air. it is quite chaotic here, because it is really calm here and so i did not see anything like that because i only live 300 metres from the accident
6:03 pm
site, and the people are calm but really shocked, so it is a small, pedestrian area and next to that there are are some big street, but it was a pedestrian area and cars are not allowed there. it was a small restaurant and the people are sitting outside and then the van crashed into the restaurant. the people are scared because in 2016 there was a christmas attack in berlin also with a vehicle so the people are kind of scared, they did not believe that it happened in muenster because it is really secure here and so, yeah. i'm also shocked andi here and so, yeah. i'm also shocked and i think it is a deliberate attack because it is not allowed to go attack because it is not allowed to 9° by attack because it is not allowed to go by car in this area and also i
6:04 pm
think the lorry was going really fast. so, and the media outlets say it could be a deliberate attack because they also searched for some explosive devices in the lorry and the driver killed himself after this attack. so i think it is clear. we did not know that it happened and so 110w did not know that it happened and so now the time has arrived and also in muenster that terror has arrived and i cannot believe it. danielwho muenster that terror has arrived and i cannot believe it. daniel who went to the scene of the attack in the immediate aftermath. let's get the latest from mike sanders the bbc world service europe editor. four people are dead. 20 we understand oui’ people are dead. 20 we understand our injured. what more? that 20 figure is a reduction on the earlier figure is a reduction on the earlier figure of 30. they say that six of
6:05 pm
those however are critically injured. the pictures that we are seeing on german media and german television are of a silver van. i think you mentioned it, and it's actually nestled in among tables that have been strewn everywhere. it seems the van drove into a pedestrian zone in muenster, which is this town of 300,000 people in northwestern germany and hit people who were dining at that restaurant. it was the first real day of spring in germany, so a lot of people were out and about enjoying the spring sunshine and the driver, the attacker seems to have found very dense, packed crowds to drive into. we immediately think, perhaps erroneously, but we immediately think of terrorist attacks because this has been used on occasions including in germany back at the end of 2016. the police are saying this is deliberate but they have not yet set its terrorism linked. they are
6:06 pm
still being circumspect about that. they have not ruled out a personal motive, the possibility there was some kind of grudge to hit someone in the restaurant seems unlikely. as we have said it is a pedestrian zone so we have said it is a pedestrian zone so you would clearly want to be injuring as many people as possible if you will drive a vehicle in a kind of area and it does not look like a specifically targeted attack, but a purse —— that a personal grudge my point towards the terrorism look like the most obvious thing. the other thing is is on the first anniversary of a similar attack in stockholm in sweden exactly a year ago when a failed asylu m exactly a year ago when a failed asylum seeker drove into a crowd outside a department store there and killed five people. he's actually admitted to being the perpetrator of that attack, but he's still on trial because in sweden they have to prove that he intended to damage the state per se. if they want to make a terrorism charge stick. 2016 was the worst year so farfor
6:07 pm
terrorism charge stick. 2016 was the worst year so far for germany in terms of terror related incidents. just remind our viewers about that. the big one was the christmas market attack in berlin in december 2016 when a failed to an easy and asylum seeker hijacked a lorry, killed the polish driver and rammed it into these christmas stalls selling christmas goods and all the nice things that go with christmas, killing 12 people and injuring 56. he escaped from that scene and was caught three days later or rather spotted in the line in italy and a lot of questions were asked as to how he managed to get that far without being stopped, but he was stopped by the italian police who shot him. this incident in muenster today, police talking about finding a suspicious object in the van. any idea what that is and whether that has been made safe? again, no official confirmation on that. the word on social media is that it is
6:08 pm
explosives, which makes sense, i guess. you remember just explosives, which makes sense, i guess. you rememberjust a month ago there was the hostage taking in southern france where the attacker killed three people in a supermarket and he had homemade explosives that he was trying to threaten people with, detonating or as it turned out be the explosives weren't particularly viable so maybe we are looking at a similar kind of insincere. it is more difficult for islamist attackers, of course i'm making a big supposition here because no one said it is an islamist attacker but, it is more difficult than that is the case to get ahold of explosives since the crackdown on is in syria and iraq so they are taking more to using... you are right not to make any suppositions because the other attack in 2016 in germany that killed nine people was by an iranian who had psychological mental problems and was not terrorism linked. absolutely. he wasjust a disgruntled youth with no particular
6:09 pm
political motive. he felt a bit sidelined, ostracized, marginalised by german society but there was no particular political motive behind the attack. mike sanders, the latest on this attack which as mike said police say was delivered, but have not yet confirmed or denied that it was a terrorist attack. the latest is for dad including the driver who shot himself. 20 people injured, six seriously —— the latest is for people are dead will stop from the radio which covers the city of muenster. a mediaeval city with a anniversary as well known as the bicycle capital of germany because so bicycle capital of germany because so much of the areas pedestrian zones. he said the whole city of in shock over what has happened. the latest information is there are four people dead including the driver and there are at least 20 people who are injured, six seriously injured, probably in danger of losing their
6:10 pm
life and that is what we know so far. it is in the middle of muenster, a lovely place. there are small streets, cafes and shops and a lot of people were out there enjoying the afternoon. the very first one afternoon this year and out of the blue came this car that drove into the crowd. at first they we re drove into the crowd. at first they were in shock, including me, of course. because it was such a lovely day and now the police are blocking the whole area. there are two helicopters circling around the area and everything is blocked and everyone has left the city. the centre. it is kind of a mediaeval area and now it is deserted and a bit spooky over there. this town here is peaceful, it is quiet, it is not so big and nobody would have thought this could happen here. we are, all of my colleagues and me, a
6:11 pm
bit under shock to because this has happened here on this day. it is unbelievable. tim is the executive director of the brandenburg institute for society. he spoke to my colleague a little earlier about the city of the city of muenster and the city of the city of muenster and the political climate in germany. muenster is a beautiful city, 250,000 inhabitants. two large universities, so the entire society is very much dominated by the university, by the students, the professors and normally during the semester at the very lively and beautiful place. actually, it was also until a few years back home for many british soldiers who were stationed in the area. the police have confirmed that there have been fatalities. that four people have died. many people will bejumping to the conclusion that this is possibly terrorist related. what do you think
6:12 pm
has happened here? first of all, at this point in time, whatever we think we know, we here, might change after the police are done with their investigation. but of course it looks like this was done on purpose, that this was a terrorist attack. however, at this point we have no information who might have been behind it. was it an islamic background or maybe it is some political extremist? that is something at this point we just do not know. tell us a bit about the atmosphere, the security background if you like in germany over the last couple of years. of course there was a previous attack, a deliberate attack with a vehicle at a berlin christmas market. what has the atmosphere it —— what has the atmosphere it —— what has the atmosphere been like in germany? like with almost all other places
6:13 pm
where there have been attacks. of course life goes on and things become normal again after a while, but in germany there has been a very thorough investigation into what we nt thorough investigation into what went wrong in the case of the attacker at the christmas market in berlin. why the attacker was still in the country and not extradited back to his homeland. and this is actually still ongoing and the bundestag now in its new legislative period hasjust bundestag now in its new legislative period has just recently bundestag now in its new legislative period hasjust recently decided to continue hearings on this and to investigate it even further. however, we do know that from the official sources of the interior
6:14 pm
secret service and authorities for the protection of the constitution that we have something like 730 so—called endangered people in germany, people who were the —— who the police believe are willing or potentially willing to commit an attack and that is something that is closely being monitored and also where the interior ministers of the various german states try to extradite these people and send them back when they are foreigners. 0f course, some of them are german nationals, so we have to deal with them. have there been obvious signs of extra security measures? in many countries across europe we have seen more armed police on the street. for example, certain things put in place to stop particularly this kind of incident where a vehicle can be
6:15 pm
driven into people. has that been something that has happened in german cities? it certainly has. when you look carefully, when there are... in fact in the christmas season, all the christmas market, there were many more road blockades around the market to prevent a car from running into those christmas markets, and at the same is happening with many other events where larger crowds come together. however, we all know that it in our larger cities there's always a good reason for crowds to come together you cannot always plan ahead of time and put barricades around it and in muenster it seems... this is the first beautiful weekend of this year. everyone is going outside, sitting outside, eating cake or having a beer on a saturday
6:16 pm
afternoon, enjoying the sun and so people come out and that is of course for someone people come out and that is of course for someone who deliberately wants to hurt people, a potential target. and something where it is of course impossible to protect every space, every restaurant, every pub where people sit outside. tim is speaking to us a little early. we will bring you the latest developments as we get them of course from muenster. 0ne news agency now reporting that special forces have been deployed. it is not berlin, obviously, it is muenster in the capital of the west region of germany. meanwhile in other news at least 1a people reported to have been killed in canada in a crash between a bus and a truck. 0n been killed in canada in a crash between a bus and a truck. on board the bus was the humbled broncos ice hockey team with players ranging in
