11:30 pm
hello. this is bbc news. we'll be taking a look at tomorrow mornings papers in a moment — first the headlines. two people have been killed and at least 20 injured after a vehicle drives into crowds of people in the german city of muenster — police say the driver shot himself at the scene. german police are searching an address in the city — believed to be the home of the attacker. tributes are paid to 15 people from a junior ice hockey team killed after a bus carrying them collides with a lorry in western canada. 300 extra police are on patrol across london. it comes after six people were killed in shootings and stabbings in the last week. it's we are looking at a horror based on a west end production that left audiences on the edge of their seat. find out whatjames king made of it and the rest of this week's

top releases in the film review. hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. with me are the journalist and author yasmin alibhai—brown and kate andrews, director of news at the institute of economic affairs. many of tomorrow's front pages are already in. the observer reports that a new political party with up to £50m in funding is secretly in development. the mail on sunday claims the prime minister has been forced into a u—turn over police stop and search powers following several weeks of violence on the capital's streets. the telegraph also leads with crime levels — home secretary amber rudd has written an article for the paper claiming that cuts are not to blame for the rise in violence. the sunday times says sergei and yulia skripal could be offered new identities and given the opportunity to resettle in the united states.
11:32 pm
the sunday express has a story about the number of patients flying overseas for private medical treatment quadrupling in four years — apparently in response to long waits on the nhs. a variety of stories making the front pages, with the recent violence in london claiming several of the sunday headlines. let's see what our reviewers make of it all. starting with the mail on sunday. theresa may's stop—and—search u—turn, the mail says, theresa may's stop—and—search u—turn, the mailsays, on theresa may's stop—and—search u—turn, the mail says, on gang wars. is that fair is there has been a lot of criticism of stop—and—search policies, not only in the us but also in the us. the target ethnic minorities. in the states in particular, we have seen terrible death at the hands of police
11:33 pm
officers not always practising the way they should. there is legitimate nervousness around this policy. is ita u—turn? nervousness around this policy. is it a u—turn? perhaps but is always such a bad thing if the policy is necessary? maybe it wasn't such a long time ago but it is now. for me, it is not whether or not stop search is the way to go at it is about trust in police officers and having them properly target the right people. to build up the trust amongst the public and amongst ethnic minority groups. so when this does happen that everyone feels confident in their decision. things like body cameras for police officers can make this a much better initiative. i think that's true but also, for a very long time there has beena also, for a very long time there has been a drive to make the police, the met in particular, reflective of the city in terms of its employment, who rises to the top. i have to say that they have not been very successful
11:34 pm
at that. we have had case after case of disillusioned officers of minority background who have had to leave all felt discriminated against. sometimes went through hell. the trust would build. if it wasn't seen as if the police force is white and is picking on blacks. that's the only thing that will break this but i think it's necessary. as these are mainly young black mixed race minority kids who are dying. how is that all right? it'sjust not all are dying. how is that all right? it's just not all right that they should die. the papers are scrabbling around for reasons to explain the spike in the stabbings and shootings. the sunday telegraph has the home secretary saying what you would expect her to say about bobbies on the beat and that cuts haven't affect that this influence
11:35 pm
in rise in crime. she points to important evidence which is when violent crime was at its highest, there was also the highest numbers of police officers on the street. to suggest there is a direct correlation may not be completely appropriate. that being said, there have been a lot of questions about the resources that the police officers do have and where they have been directed. a lot of that effort is going online and going to target those on social media and many are accusing of things like hate speech. i'm not saying if there are threats online that they shouldn't be tackled appropriately handled but when you see these stabbings in london of young kids week after week, a lot of people are asking if the resources they do have are being invested in the appropriate areas. the home secretary is bringing in a whole host of new measures and many of them are being set out to take away the glamour that many people are concerned is contributing to this rise in knife crime. you think that's the word, glamour? s it is
11:36 pm
that's the word, glamour? s it is that but it's also, this is a very complex situation. -- it is that. interparty arguments are settling on one or the other but there needs to bea one or the other but there needs to be a cross— party one or the other but there needs to be a cross—party alliance. it's almost a national crisis. it doesn't matter what party or what side of the spectrum you are wrong, this is a national crisis. they need to come together and look at family dynamics, youth centres, psychological help, policing and stop this latching on to one or the other. i stop this latching on to one or the other. lam stop this latching on to one or the other. i am with sadiq khan when he says there aren't enough officers in certain areas. in certain areas, there is over policing, if you like, over presence of there is over policing, if you like, over presence of police. in other areas, they're not there. you find this is the inner—city areas where the greatest trouble spots are. unless we get a really integrated cross—party
11:37 pm
unless we get a really integrated cross— party alliance taking unless we get a really integrated cross—party alliance taking this seriously, we're not going to beat it. that's what it be. there is no reason for this to be politicised. london has a labour mayor. —— labour. everyone wants the same outcome which is fewer deaths, especially amongst young people. this is what we have been reporting on all day, the attack on muenster in germany. everytime these things happen here or across the world, the first thing i wake up and say, i hope it wasn't a muslin. because of course in germany it has all of these added dimensions. mrs merkel took in all of these asylum seekers and everybody is waiting for it to go wrong. according to the telegraph at the moment, it is not being seen asa at the moment, it is not being seen as a terrorism attack which somehow, it's always a muslim terror attack.
11:38 pm
but it is a 48 she rolled german man with mental health issues. people have been seriously injured, people have been seriously injured, people have died. you have to think about the victims as much as you think about what was it that drove a man to do this. it's going to happen because how can you stop vans and ca rs because how can you stop vans and cars on the street? the mental health issue is always overlooked in these issues. whether it is an islamic terror attack or a young white man in the states of shooting at the school. the mental health issueis at the school. the mental health issue is always the last in the table. i don't understand why, it should be the first thing we are addressing. there is nowhere you can stop people in their cars driving into whatever they want to drive into. the only way to tackle it is to better mental health services. i'm about to start a project on the mental health and terrorism issue for which i have been given funding to investigate. that layer. we have been looking at punishment or websites as if they are all machines
11:39 pm
or robots. what's going on in families? what is their relationship? we need to know. we need to know before we can help them. really interesting. let's move on to the sunday times. it has a front—page story about a campaign it has been running about trying to curb acid attack. they are claiming a victory, the sunday times, of its campaign on acid attacks and they made it harder to purchase acid. it looks like under ratings will be banned from purchasing it. it feeds back into their other assets, if police to find people with certain kinds of acid on them, they would be able to prosecute if they had it for suspicious means. this is an issue the public is really quite frightened about. it is important to remember that while many of the public will be hearing about these acid attacks and diskette they will be the victim of one, many of the
11:40 pm
public to think about their kids being stabbed in the street because as we suggested earlier, that is an issue that affects particular ethnic minority men. we are all in this together, it all comes together. the risks are there for everyone. boo the acid one is harder to deal with because they could always put it into a lemonade bottle and some of this stuff is easily available in diy stores. that is what this campaign is about, to make it less easily available. sometimes the people they are attacking, the deliverers and so on. i haven't seen many cases recently that we had a spate recently. i'm pleased that this is what they are addressing. i know there have been attempts to stop young people from buying red bull. the sunday times, the ongoing
11:41 pm
case of the skripals. the skripals have ready been under pressure from the russian consulate in the uk to be working with them and they have quite rightly pushed back. people are worried about their immediate safety. police to seek countries like america, canada, australia, new zealand. that they are standing up for the rights of people. the russians on this front cannot win. these lives are precious because they are lives but also this is a much wider statement about what can be tolerated. i still think we need to have very rational, credible investigation of what's happened. i'm very concerned. just not convinced we are being told everything we need to be told. we can't be told everything. but the things we need actually to be
11:42 pm
offered as a proper explanation about what happened here will stop what was this? where did it come from? one important point in the story is that this week we are supposed to hear back from the hague and they were expected to confirm about the nerve agent. we need all the confirmation we can get to highlight that russia was the culprit. we can't have the sunday papers without some politics. the observer reporting on a new party? another one. i'm quite baffled. being the isn't a good idea. you come back and you think, really? do we need another party? we need the parties we have to behave in a slightly more, kind of, can what british way,. we have had new parties. —— cooperative way. maybe this is not the political party we are used to. it wants to deal with the polarisation caused by brexit. i
11:43 pm
wish them luck. anything that brings a population together, i feel very dislocated in this country at the moment. you really feel as though it isa moment. you really feel as though it is a fragmented society where you can't even have a conversation at a bus stop without tension is breaking out. anything that helps that is good. if there is money like this which there is... £50 million. is there space that is? is it viable? if they start a new political party, surely it will pull to the left or right and that would jeopardise the labour party or the conservative party. i agree with you to come together on issues. everything we have it doesn't of iwonderf " " iwonderwhat'r'f'" " "
