1:39 pm
ago have been talking for a while now and as i say, diplomatic sources have told the bbc that they have agreed that prince charles will succeed. i think we can probably expect a statement confirming that come the end of the day. that will be a source of great satisfaction to the queen. i suspect this was squared off with the countries that make up the commonwealth before the queen made her expression of desire yesterday but this was still a decision for the heads of government, not a decision for the queen. they had to get together and formally agree it and it appears they have done just that. the authorities in berlin say they have just successfully defused an unexploded bomb from the second world war. there's been massive disruption in the city in the last few hours, with thousands of people evacuated from the area, which includes government ministries, the main train station and europe's biggest hospital. 0ur berlin correspondent jenny hill reports. 10,000 people have been moved out of their homes, the railway hub here has been completely shut down, streets are closed.
1:40 pm
we've been to streets where people have just stood bewildered as police officers have tried to shoo them in the opposite direction. you can see here this is normally a very busy square in front of the railway station, packed with commuters. today, just a few people sat with their suitcases in the sunshine. what you notice here is the mood. germans are relatively sanguine about the discovery of unexploded ordinance, and that's because it is such a common occurrence. almost every week you read something in the newspapers about a world war two bomb being uncovered by a farmer or a builder. what's particularly unusual about this case is its proximity to the railway hub and the disruption it is subsequently causing. a woman has died in a fire at a residential care home for adults with learning disabilities in chingford. more than 70 firefighters dealt with the incident. 12 people managed to escape before they arrived. the cause of the fire isn't yet known. crews arrived within five minutes. they were faced with a severe fire on the ground floor.

the head of barclastes staley is facing a fine by uk regulators for breaching rules when he tried to identify a whistle—blower at the bank. mr staley, who has apologised for his conduct, has been given time to appeal. barclays said there was no suggestion mr staley acted with a lack of integrity. two separate surveys have revealed that hundreds of thousands of the poorest families in britain are going without basic necessities. citizens advice said as many as 140,000 households are going without power, and the living wage foundation said many of the poorest parents are skipping meals. premier league clubs collectively reported record revenues of £4.5 billion last season, and record profits too — of £500 million. they made a small loss last year. but significantly, wages rose just 9%. that may seem a lot but it's way down on the 25% rise the year before. after a year—long investigation banking regulators have said barclays bossjes staley may be fined for trying to find out

the identity of a whistle—blower. two years ago an anonymous letter raised concerns of a personal nature about a senior employee. mr staley then asked barclays' internal investigation team to attempt to identify the authors of the letters. the statement from the regulators: ‘the financial conduct authority and the prudential regulatory authority have now concluded investigations into the ceo of barclays and barclays bank plc. we have issued draft warning notices in respect to the ceo and will announce the outcome once this issue has reached a conclusion. earlier we spoke to chris roebuck, visiting professor of transformational leadership, at cass business school. we need to make the point this is notjust a barclay‘s issue. if an organisation is not enabling employees to point out when things are going wrong, or when things could be improved, the people

role. as we've been hearing arsene wenger is stepping down as manager of arsenal after 21 years and figures out today showjust how much money that club and others in the premier league are making. a study of top clubs finances has revealed that players' wages were held in check last season, despite football clubs posting record profits. the analysis, carried out by the consultancy deloitte, shows the league made a collective pre—tax profit of half a billion pounds for the 2016—2017 season, almost trebling the previous record, three seasons earlier. clubs are said to be spending only 23p of every extra pound of revenue on increased player salaries. for more on this, let's talk to tim bridge, senior consultant in deloitte‘s sports business group. these figures really sure that there has been a transformation in the finances compared to ten years ago. absolutely. 0ver recent years we have seen a real sea change in the financial situation of football clu bs financial situation of football clubs in the premier league. now this year that is resulting in every
1:48 pm
clu b this year that is resulting in every club in the league making record revenues. every club in the league making an operating profit and i8 clu bs making an operating profit and i8 clubs in the league and making a profit before tax. this is quite staggering. as you say, we used to and gloom terms about the financial health of football clubs but the futures certainly looks rosy at the moment. arsene wenger is stepping down after 21 years as manager of arsenal. what about arsenal's record financially during that time? arsene wenger has been position nearly as long as we have been tracking the numbers and when we first did our football money league in 1996—97, arsenal were the 20th highest revenue arsenal were the 20th highest revenue generator arsenal were the 20th highest revenue generator in world cup football. they now have a position in the top ten quite regularly. in january the position six. they have moved to the emirates stadium in that time and just a couple of years ago they generated more than any other club in much the revenue globally. arsene wenger has seen a

period of unprecedented financial success for arsenal. he has really applauded his own careful financial management. he said, we do not buy superstars, we make them. does your research back those claims? our research back those claims? our research shows that all clubs now having to turn towards sort of model. with the increase in regulation we see in football but that's the premier league and uefa level, clubs are having to take a careful look at the way they balance their books and so investing in players at a younger age, trying to develop them through academies is much more important that has been before. these figures willjust give more ammunition to supporters' groups who seek ticket prices are simplyfar groups who seek ticket prices are simply far too high when these record profits are being announced. if you take a look at clubs' individual business models, ticket pricing is a key part of it. much the revenue plays less of a partners ever the revenue plays less of a partners ever has done before. clubs in the premier league are conscious of that. we have seen over recent years
1:50 pm
the introduction of the £30 away ticket row. clubs like everton actually give this discount on their season tickets to people who are going to renew in the light of growing revenue elsewhere. clubs are extreme the conscious of this and do everything they can to make sure they keep those supporters happy. many thanks. the ftse 100 is set for its fourth straight week of gains, its longest winning streak since mid—january. it's partly because the pound has fallen back after bank of england governor mark carney dampened widespread expectations for an interest rate hike in may. the royal mail plc has chosen the boss of its fast—growing european parcels business, rico back, to succeed chief executive officer moya greene, who will retire after eight years in charge. she is only one of seven female ceos in the ftse 100 plus lets look at the oil price — a barrel of the benchmark brent crude has retreated from that three year high of $74 dollars,
1:51 pm
that's after the us president donald trump tweeted that the oil price was artificially high and criticisng 0pec, the organisation of petroleum exporting countries. 0pec producers and non—0pec countries did strike a deal in 2016 to trim production to reduce a global glut of oil, which has helped to boost prices from below $30 a barrel in early 2016. that's all the business news. a toy pirate ship launched by two young brothers from aberdeenshire as part of a bucket list of adventures they have put together is braving the rough seas of the southern atlantic in a bid to make it all the way to the americas. but with the boat's battery running low, the crew of an offshore drilling rig have offered to find her, recharge her batteries and send the little boat back on her way. speaking to tina daheley on the victoria derbyshire programme was the boys' father macneill ferguson.
1:52 pm
we put together a list of 500 different challenges and activities for us to try and get through before our two young boys ollie and harry turned 18. so far, we have completed 239 of these adventures. and we share them on our facebook page. the days are just packed. why this toy pirate ship that you decided to set sail and track? well, one of the adventures was going to be a message in the bottle. but we did not feel putting a plastic bottle in the ocean was that environmentally friendly. while we were thinking about how we could do it, we realised we had the perfect vessel in the toy shop, in a toy box already, we had a pirate ship. so we made it a bit more seaworthy because they are not really designed for the open ocean.
1:53 pm
we filled it full of polystyrene. the boys did most of the engineering. how old are your boys? ollie is eight and harry is six. wow, ok. and so you made a mayday call. how surprised where you by the response? i understand there were more than 100 people are looking for adventure now, this toy ship. not quite. when we say a mayday call, the media has slightly dramatised it to make it more exciting. we put out a facebook plea. we have been following the boat's progress for the last five months now. she was dropped off the coast of mauritania, on the west coast of africa. we can see it now, we have a map showing its route.
1:54 pm
she has crossed the atlantic all by herself. when she started getting close to guyana, we could see she had taken a southerly route. we weren't sure whether she would make it all the way to guyana. we put out a plea, if anyone finds her, to get in touch. do get in touch! if you've ever bought flat pack furniture, and then struggled to put it together, then you might find this next item rather interesting. this time—lapse footage shows the two robots at a laboratory in singapore, putting together a chair made by the swedish company ikea. it took them just under nine minutes to complete the job, but it took them a few goes to get it right. they also break a couple of kits in earlier tries. and had to be given one of the simplest kits to assemble because they can't yet use nuts and bolts. i'll say nothing more! time for a look at the weather. mid—afternoon. you may well be
1:55 pm
dreaming ofa mid—afternoon. you may well be dreaming of a warm, sunny weekend, but i have to say things look a bit different. some changes that will throw a fly into the ointment. let's make the most of the sunshine that most of us have. a murky start in shropshire but skies have cleared. beautiful day they are in south—west london. for the weekend, a bit of each range. things gradually cooling down and there is the risk of some thunderstorms since the cool arrest after workers were on. already some fairly cool air starting to return across north—western areas at the moment. towards the south—east is astounding to another warm afternoon with lots of sunshine. a cloud and mist and fog next to the irish sea coast is making a dent in temperatures and we can see some showers across northern scotland. here on the poolside. towards the south—east, once again highs of

27-28 south—east, once again highs of 27—28 degrees. the sunshine will go into the evening and overnight we are looking at some clear skies, mist and fog patches. murky for the course around the irish sea. temperatures generally holding up quite well but a little bit chilly across eastern scotland and not the statement. tomorrow another day at first glance. mist and fog first thing that will clear and then some sunshine. however, this is the first change, some thundery downpours just starting to creep and it was the south—west into meals and midlands. still plenty of warmth to dry the downpours further south and where we have the sunshine, it will feel very warm and perhaps humid. always call further north. this is our high resolution with a model that shows the showers will be quite hit and miss. not everyone will catch them but if you could do there could be some really intense downpours with rain, thunderany some really intense downpours with rain, thunder any short space of

time. they will clear out into the north sea for the start of sunday but then we bring a cold front end. that will bring rain and places on sunday and introduce cover air across many parts of the uk. but before we have a pretty warm london marathon, temperatures easily up to 21, maybe 20 to celsius. full stop there could be some rain in the afternoon. behind that, a mixture of sunshine and showers but look how much it cool stone, 39 belfast, 14 in plymouth. so getting into the 20s across the south—east. then that cooler weather will stay with us until next week. there are some changes on the way. hello, you're watching afternoon live. today at 2. prince charles will be the next head of the commonwealth — sources indicate leaders have decided to grant the queen's sincerest wish. i'm reporting live from buckingham
