to take us through this week's cinema releases is mark kermode. so mark, what do we have this week? we have tully, a new film starring charlie's. and the new and make him a merry ‘s flower. tully i'm looking forward to because it is made by the people who made juno which is just glorious. i it is made by the people who made juno which isjust glorious. i love that movie so much. written by gabor cody, directed by jason that movie so much. written by gabor cody, directed byjason reitman. they work together with charlize theron on young adults. the story is charlize theron is a mother, middle—aged woman who is struggling with kids and a newborn baby. she is exhausted. absolutely. and her mugly exhausted. absolutely. and her smugly successful brother says to her look, why don't you let me pay for a night nanny. her look, why don't you let me pay fora night nanny. so

her look, why don't you let me pay for a night nanny. so that you can get some sleep. at first she said i don't want anything to do with it. finally she is so exhausted that she succumbs and says fine, and tear tully who is a strange mix of on the one hand part scary mary poppins and all the other hand a sprightly reminder of her younger self and immediately they bond. here's a clip. you're like a great mum. great mums organised class parties and casino night. they bake cupcakes that look like minions. all the things i'm just too tired to do. honestly even getting dressed just feels exhausting. i opened the closet and ijust think it and ijust do that? yes, living on the planet with a short holiday. although jupiter yes, living on the planet with a short holiday. althouthupiter is even shorter. you're like a book of fun facts for a popular fourth—graders —— i'm popular fourth—graders. a light humour between them and they have a fundamental bond and in what

happens is the story goes off perhaps in ways that you would not expect. the first thing to say is it isa expect. the first thing to say is it is a really convincing portrayal of the exhaustion of her character. she pulled in so many different directions that has to do so different directions that has to do so many different things. one point she goes into school and has a route with the headmistress who says i don't want you to leave this way. she says i leave this way everyday, you just never see it. so i like that and i thought that was done really well and i thought charlize theron really give you a sense of character who is completely at their wits end. then what happens is through her relationship with tully she starts to reconnect with the pa rt she starts to reconnect with the part of her life that she thought she had forgotten about. bear in mind, diablo cody has worked on other things byjennifer is body which is a fantastic story and she is not afraid to fall the central character off into flights of fancy. perhaps some audiences would not expect. i thought this was brave and adventurous and the risks it took with the screenplay. the thing that worked best for it was that even when the narrative goes off in
5:49 pm
slightly strange ways, i know some people found the third act out of the blue, i did not and people found the third act out of the blue, i did notand i people found the third act out of the blue, i did not and i thought it was consistent with the rest of the film. it has is the feet so firmly on the ground that you do believe in the character, but you absolutely believe this is somebody who is just called upon every minute of the day to do stuff that they are running out of energy for. and you get a really good sense of that exhaustion and depression and anxiety. not so much falling asleep as just collapsing in a heap on the sofa and having dreams of drowning. dreams of mermaids, which also tell you something about where this is going with its flights of fancy. i thought it was an interesting feel with a really terrific central performance and a screenplay which is willing to ta ke and a screenplay which is willing to take risks that perhaps don't entirely work, but good for taking. sounds interesting. i am makes picking excellent dialogue. she writes is so... she writes very good dialogue. that is one thing you expect from diablo cody. you see her coming and you think there will be a

number of quotable zingers, but the nice thing is that there is more to it than that. really intriguing. as is, lien on pete. yes, terrible title. based on a novel and directed by the creator of 45 years and we can. a teenager who is lonely and moved to portland, oregon with his single father, is not a great father but he clearly loves him. he ends up finding work looking after a quarter horse. the horse is called lean on pete. the horse towards the end of his racing life, looked after by steve buscemi who is kind of growth course owner who when the horse is done with he has told no sentiments about sending them off to mexico which is a euphemism for what is really happening to them. i really like this phone. i thought first charlie palmer, the young kid, absolutely brilliant. he has not one of those faces that telegraphs his emotions, not to do with dialogue but the way he looks. he has something of the young james dean about him because there is a looks
5:51 pm
to his voice, very expressive face. i love the fact that andrew haigh, british film maker, has gone to america and shot in some deserts around but has not been overwhelmed by the scenery. there are moments in it when we are out in the desert, but still at the centre of it is charlie. he is in every single frame pretty much in the movie. the other thing is i like the fact that none of the characters in this film are two—dimensional. some of the maze seem harsh and difficult and violent, but everyone has got redeeming qualities. and they often lay against type. one point chloe as a jockey who has fallen off the horse one time too many. anything i can see the narrative is going to set her up as a surrogate, but it absolutely does not. i think there isa absolutely does not. i think there is a really, really terrific movie. it is my dark in places. there are moments of tears in it. i mean you like 45 years. i loved it, which is why i am going to see this. you can think of the intimate relationship thing. that is all here. i thought it was really great. i wish it was called something other than lean on
5:52 pm
pete. i wish it was called something like discovery, but lean on pete is it. don't be put off by the title of the field. that is the take away. your third film, a beautiful animation film. yes, this lovely animated. it is directed at about the story is a young girl discovers these magical flowers in the woods and she discovers a broomstick in the middle ofa discovers a broomstick in the middle of a tree and suddenly it whisked her off to this other land, this magical college. you can see echoes of harry potter in this. she thinks she has arrived there completely wrongly. when she comes back to earth however the magical work follows her back to her home. here's a clip. the imposter witch.
5:53 pm
how dare you taint the noble establishment? did you really think you could fool us? well, now, it seems that your friend has drifted here along with the mist. it was easy finding him, thanks to all your help. if you want to save him, you must bring me the witch's flower. and since it only blooms once every seven years, you'd better be quick. but if you decide not to come, there's a rule, remember? that all trespassers will be transformed. i'll see you soon, imposter witch. i really like this. i love the way
5:54 pm
it looks. i love the complicity of the storytelling. the fact that you are seeing some quite complicated issues of guilt and remorse and duty and that kind of thing, but doing so ina way and that kind of thing, but doing so in a way which is really magically engaging. there are moments in it when you think i am looking at this wonder spectacle. you see this fantastic fiery displays. but it is really to do with little details, you believe in the characters and you believe in the characters and you believe in these situations even when they are utterly fantastical. there are two versions of it, the original language version and the dubbed version, you are hearing a clip from the dubbed version there. i thought it was really well done andl i thought it was really well done and i liked it very much and it is one of those things, i am a big fan of animation and i think it is great to have all these forms of animation coexisting side by side at the moment. this is a really fine piece andl moment. this is a really fine piece and i think anybody could enjoy this. really good piece of work. mary and the witch's flower. best out this week. i am officially in trouble because i am sorry, i still haven't seen beast. it is not a horrorfilm. it is a psychological

chiller. i know. and two cracking performance at the heart of it. yes. really terrific. i compared this, jonny flynn, his central performance which i thought was really brilliant, talking about rachel weisz, my cousin, she decided to herself whether the character was good to her not but she kept it as a secret. if they really fine piece of work and a really good british picture. all the exteriors are shot onjersey picture. all the exteriors are shot on jersey and all the picture. all the exteriors are shot onjersey and all the interiors are shotin onjersey and all the interiors are shot in surrey. well, the outside of jersey. that is what count and i promise i am going to see it. it has been on my list for many weeks. ebd for anyone who wants to stay in? -- dvd? this is done now because no new releases on monday. dwayne the rockjohnson is new releases on monday. dwayne the rock johnson is currently new releases on monday. dwayne the rockjohnson is currently charging around in cinemas doing really well. i really like this. i was not a fan of the original. i never quite got it. i thought this was really, really good fun. well—written grip,

entertaining, popcorn entertainment but it is good popcorn entertainment, smart characterizations and the jokes, good story. i have not seen it twice. and both times i laughed pretty consistently. it is so much better than we had any right to expect. excellent. thank you very much. a really good week. gozi beast! i have got a busy bank holiday ahead. very busy. a quick reminder before we go that you'll find more film news and reviews from across the bbc online at bbc.co.uk/markkermode. and you can find all our previous programmes on the bbc iplayer. that's it for this week though. we have all got a lot to do this weekend. enjoy the bank holiday, thank you for being with us. bye— bye. hello again. we have had some decent weather around today. the good news

is hanging into the bank holiday weekend things are set to get a little bit warmer across most of the words of the uk. today the best of sometimes across eastern areas. his was one of our photos from earlier in the day. these guys have been pretty clear here all day. further west we have seen pretty clear here all day. further west we have seen some pretty clear here all day. further west we have seen some thicker cloud at times today. underneath that about, certainly earlier this morning it was a great old start to the day in south wales. missed patches and drizzle. overnight, the cloud is probably going to re—thicken around some of our irish sea coast so we will see some of that low cloud mist and drizzle returning. bristol channel, a threat ofa returning. bristol channel, a threat of a bit of rain for the final thrust of scotland but otherwise it isa dry thrust of scotland but otherwise it is a dry and mild night. temperatures between two and —— ten and 12 for most of us. really good bank holiday long weekend. sunny spells warming up and drive for the majority of it. this is why. we're

seeing an area of high pressure built across the near continents as we go through the holiday weekend and increasingly we are going to start to track and warm air. you get a real sense of those temperatures rising across northern germany, northern france and that is where the air is going to be moving from as we had in to sunday and monday, boosting the temperatures to potentially 27. current early may bank holiday record stands at 2a, it looks like we're going to completely smashed that apart. may bank holiday nationwide has only been around a0 yea rs. nationwide has only been around a0 years. whether one is on saturday, there is the threat of rain across northwest scotland with some brisk winds and cold conditions, but otherwise plenty of time whether with some sunshine. highs into the upper teens to low 20s, warming trend to our weather continues on sunday as we start to feel that influence from the near continents. the air is a bit dryer so let's boudewijn and more in the way of sunshine. we're looking at the temperatures climbing a little bit, getting towards the mid—20s and the warmest spot. as we had to bank

holiday monday, most of us are having the dry weather was warm spells and sunshine. then we will likely see temperatures peak at 27 towards london and southeast england. at the same time across northern areas of scotland it will turnit northern areas of scotland it will turn it little bit cooler and a little bit cloudier as well. still it looks like a very good bank holiday weekend for most of us with the weather getting sunnier and warmerfor most of the weather getting sunnier and warmer for most of us as the weekend goes by. that is the weather. goodbye for now. labour fails to win its big target councils at the local elections, while the conservatives are relieved their showing, wasn't the wipe out some feared. labour won plymouth, but after a high profile campaign in london, failed to win any opposition authorities. obviously i am disappointed in any places where we lost a bit of ground. but if you look at the overall picture, labour gained all those seats across the country. we gained a lot of votes in places where we had not had those votes before. the conservatives gained control of barnet, but lost trafford council, on a mixed night for the government. we won't take anything for granted.
