he should have done a lot better. he wa nts to should have done a lot better. he wants to know what is going wrong. should have done a lot better. he wants to know what is going wrongli hope the labour party does do this. when i was at the labour party, we lost the 2015 election campaign and we did this. we asked a n:e.c. to do a review into what went wrong and i think this is really important. the thing the labour party has got to understand is it is not good just sorting of both in cities where you already have labour mps. we want to wina already have labour mps. we want to win a general election, we have to improve our standing outside of london, notjust in the metropolitan areas, in the sires, and the towns, in the rural areas and that is a big issue. the idea of devolution... richard burton was saying that we need to reach ever yes. exactly! would need to reach out. we want improvement outside of the metro.
10:46 pm
the other thing that really needs to be done is we have to have a look at the anti—semitism. it is not good enough. the labour party paid a heavy price for failing to get a grip on anti—semitism at the leader of the labour council in the north of the labour council in the north of london said labour voters were in tea rs over of london said labour voters were in tears over the anti—semitism thing. that issue. 0ne tears over the anti—semitism thing. that issue. one of the front benches has called the inexperience of hubris from corbyn's team and i think what was concerning was quite how out of touch they were with the sentiment on the ground because they planned to have a victory parade in the streets of barnett, were of course because of anti—semitism was with the tories took that counsel. there were so out of touch with what what was going on, the bolting in that area, and i think that is something that was to labour party really needs to go back and think about very carefully. they were expecting to make gains across london, there were some questions
10:47 pm
about the fact they would sweep the board in london at one point. so that clearly... i have to say one thing on that. to be fair... it is not what was happening on the ground. which doesn't show a very effective operation despite the numberof numbers to effective operation despite the number of numbers to have. to be fair, what was interesting, they didn't win and that is the critical thing but in wandsworth, a tour regional underground, they came with an 80 votes. which is quite amazing. everybody is picking apart what labour should've done, let's just say that conservatives should've done the better. what should they have been doing. what they have done if they have started to really improve the way in which the party machine is working in the way in which they campaign. what the big dog is of the general election so i think a lot of credit is due to bring lewis and james beverly webb improve that. while they have obviously improve the position in the midlands, they are improving their position of leave voters,
10:48 pm
would you have a position where they're not winning in the city. because we can't have a two speed country. what you have one party of the country that is voting for the conservatives in another part that is loaded by labour and never the two shall meet. we need more unification. turning to the front of the mail. part of the conservative when it is being put down to them taking up the ukip voters. this is being very interesting. the ukip but has absolutely gone to the conservative party. which is to be expected. and this is going to provide theresa may with a further headache because they still ukip supporters are going to have an effect on the labour party at them like mama the pats, dragging the conservative party to the right particularly on brexit. theresa may will have very difficult decisions ahead of her in terms of the customs union, and what kind of immigration system we have as we are leaving the eu. sol system we have as we are leaving the
10:49 pm
eu. so i think they are going to further entrench their position and they will be strong on lead areas but as she said there will be a problem with ethnic minority voters, the wind rushed and that was an absolute outrage, and people are furious,. notjust ethnic minority communities, grenville still looms very large as a real kind of staying on the government. ashraf great cup towers. the labour party in anti—semitism problems with the conservative party is not squeaky clea n. conservative party is not squeaky clean. around the store and then away can who made the most disgusting racist joke away can who made the most disgusting racistjoke calling asian people dogs and brown people dogs, they were reinstated into the party. if anybody wants to see that they can have a look at your twitter feed i have seen that you have commented on that. what i would say is there and the different between big ukip people who have voted for the conservatives and momentum and momentum have rice with that the labour party because because they
10:50 pm
are members and the voting structure has changed. there are a drag. there's a difference there but you can see... you are writing about them at the point which is that going forward now, there is a clear message that the leave voters has a significant which is even more therefore theresa may. —— you have a right in your fundamental point. she will have to answer for this. the challenge of the customs again or the customs partnershipjust haven't gone away. they are technical issues with the customs partnership. the proposal would have not been resolved. nobody has answered how that will work for business or practise. we have other members including the front page of the telegraph were coming forward and challenging theresa may now to have ano challenging theresa may now to have a no compromise brexit following the message of the local elections. that does file on the pressure. at the same time, if she wants to go
10:51 pm
forward and being able to win votes in cities and in other areas, who may be more remain at have other priorities, that has to be balanced going forward. the daily mail quote borisjohnson going forward. the daily mail quote boris johnson saying going forward. the daily mail quote borisjohnson saying that it clearly shows we need a clean break from brussels. the daily telegraph as saying that this is really a sign that she needs to pursue a no compromise brexit. but i'm going back to before. he said this of a second time the prime minister has gone and to an election with a position to take us out of the single market and the customs union and that his flock. so he says it is flopping. it hasn't worked. and that his flock. so he says it is flopping. it hasn't workedlj and that his flock. so he says it is flopping. it hasn't worked. i think brexit did come up as an issue in this election campaign. i think theresa may will be dragged more into the position of her party saying to be tough on immigration.
10:52 pm
remember it will be very interesting because immigration is the other big thing coming down. she disappointed stodgy divers who want to try and reduce the hostile climate in terms of immigration. we've had stories about doctors. —— cjust implemented back up to. she will feel conflicted people in her party saying let's be pragmatic. —— c just people in her party saying let's be pragmatic. —— cjust implemented sajid david. she will have this hard right wing... i seen a bit differently. i see her appointing sajid david at some secretary as the opportunity to break with some the scandals. these are ready made it very clear statement and his giving afg ha n very clear statement and his giving afghan interpreters... looked the wind rushed... they didn't even... he did a member transparency. to more papers to get there. i wanted to pick us up on the front of the ft. you have a hybrid car?|j to pick us up on the front of the ft. you have a hybrid car? i have a previous actually. —— i do. it's a

sure this is his but no agreement, isa sure this is his but no agreement, is a story which says at the moment there is a draft proposal that all cars, except electric cars or plug—ins will be banned. and at the moment, there is no agreement on this. apparently, it is reported that michael gove and greg clark are in favour of the car band, but actually the department for transport has categorically denied the fact this is going to happen. and that any band that would come and would include hybrids. hybrids would be part of that. i think it is still under discussion and under debate at the moment. i think again, whatever plan does come in news sobhi face properly and appropriately because cars are expensive and they are people's main expense. just to finish off, would you have this obesity hijab. i'm ready now. if somebody has the middle, stick it in me. -- obesity

talk. the amount of sugar i think is the last night. i am your human guinea pig. —— i consumed last night to get the 24—hour the commentary. gap to be obesity. it says that the serious thing about it is it can result in the patients consuming 30% less food. after they had this injection. it made their body felt more full and i had the effect of a gastric band. any alarm bells for you? the former chair of a science committee, i read the second paragraph it says it are still in trial. you have to make sure it is safe and works. and appropriately. we want to keep you healthy. obesity isa we want to keep you healthy. obesity is a huge challenge. 60% prevalent in the community and causes preventable illness, diabetes, cancer, mental illness, cardiovascular diseases and went to find ways to tackle it. i am in favour of providing a safe in the evidence that they are. the diabetes
10:55 pm
thing it's interesting because diabetes is one of the boycott academics. the nhs is cost a billion academics. the nhs is cost a billion a year. you said just now it is about putting the weight on but being healthy. and having a jab, does that mean you can carry on?|j am just lazy. that is the word. thank you both. a lot of people will be saying that. that's it for the papers tonight. don't forget you can see the front pages of the papers online on the bbc news website. it's all there for you, seven days a week at bbc.co.uk/papers. and if you miss the programme any evening you can watch it later on bbc iplayer. thank you ayesha hazarika and nicola blackwood. goodbye. hello.
10:56 pm
after we get past the bank holiday, things will cool down a bit. but through this weekend, things are warming up and there will be some good sunshine around. we've already seen some sunny spells across the uk in the past couple of days, and we will see increasing sunshine as the weekend goes on. while most places are looking dry, there's an exception, morthwest scotland will see rain at times and cooler air compared to the rest of the uk. we've been watching temperatures closely. 0n the way to the warmest may bank holiday on record. quite chilly for some overnight, kent could be down to four going into saturday morning but most of us will be around seven and 12 celsius with some cloud and some clear spells, patchy mist and fog not widespread, quite misty around this irish sea coast, west wales and onto the tomorrow. there will be some outbreaks of rain at times into northwest scotland. and the wind quite gusty here later in the day, excess of a0 mph.
10:57 pm
the vast majority will have really light winds, sunshine, and warmth near 20 celsius and sunshine in scotland and the low 20s in southeast england. the big picture shows the reason why we're getting this fine weather to the weekend. this high pressure in control for most of us. just these fronts brushing northwest into scotland and onto sunday, a similar picture here. not going to be rainy all the time, expect the chance of seeing some rain and fairly brisk winds. the winds are light elsewhere, still some nastiness at the irish sea. some of that mayjust approach the eastern side of northern ireland on sunday. for many places, it will be sunshine, it clear blue skies as well. temperatures in the high teens and low 20s widely. 0nto the bank holiday. a bit of patchy cloud and scotland and northern ireland but for many it will be blue skies all the way, still the chance of mistiness and a bit cooler in northeast scotland.
10:58 pm
the result lower compared with the previous few days. the highest temperatures are likely to be in and arrested east england, the highest temperatures are likely to be in and around east england, peaking to the upper 20s in some spots may be as high as 27 celsius for that warmest early may bank holiday. we'll will all not get that warm but most of us will be very pleasant indeed. this is bbc news. i'm lukwesa burak. the headlines: labour and the conservatives claim success in the local elections in england. jeremy corbyn says his party achieved solid results despite not
10:59 pm
making big gains. obviously i'm disappointed to did we lost a bit of ground to be that if you look at the overall picture we gained seats across the country and votes in places where we never had votes in places where we never had votes before. the conservatives gained control of barnet, but lost trafford council, on a mixed night for the government. we will not take anything for granted. we will continue to work ha rd granted. we will continue to work hard for local people and we will build on the success for the future. the liberal democrats are celebrating victories in cambridgeshire, and richmond, but support for ukip across the country collapsed.
