10:30 pm
if this is bbc news. our latest headlines: former manchester united manager sir alex ferguson, has emergency surgery for a brain haemorrhage. british fugitive jamie acourt has been remanded in custody by a spanish judge, after being arrested in barcelona on drugs charges. russian opposition leader alexei navalny is arrested as he tries to address a protest against president putin. hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. with me are the broadcaster, john stapleton, and the journalist and author, yasmin alibhai—brown. most of the front pages are in.
10:31 pm
the observer leads with allegations that aides to us president donald trump hired a spy firm to "dig for dirt" on key obama administration figures who negotiated the iran peace deal. "fighting for his life" — the daily star on former manchester united manager sir alex ferguson, who they say is in hospital after suffering a bleed to the brain. the mail on sunday focuses on allegations about relatives of the new home secretary sajid javid. "brexiteers threaten may with open revolt" says the sunday telegraph, if she ignores their objections to her favoured plan for a customs deal with the eu. so let's begin. the sunday telegraph and its main story, brexiteers threaten theresa may with open revolt. we have had a secret revealed this week, lots of
10:32 pm
briefing from cabinet ministers. john, what do you think? it is a headline. i don't think this actually takes it on a great deal further, simply saying those who wa nt further, simply saying those who want out still want out and have threatened to steam—rollered theresa may if she overrides them. this is about the customs union? exactly. they made publicly disclaimer she gets her favourite reaction they made publicly disclaimer she gets herfavourite reaction —— favoured. i don't think it adds a great deal to what we know already. they complain about the time it is taking. we all knew that before as well. it is basically an update. what is alarming is that this brexit thing has ripped everybody apart, family, friends, lovers, the country. i don't think we will ever get back together. here is a cabal. it is notjust brexiteers buddha
10:33 pm
particularly hardline cabal making decisions for the nation and holding the prime minister to ransom. they would answer —— and so they are reflecting the public opinion. the public were never asked if what they want, you know deal exit, is what we want. it is a relatively small group of people. they are very aggressive. lam not of people. they are very aggressive. i am not want to ever sympathise with mrs may but sometimes i do think she cannot get away from this clutch. are you talking about boris? i'm talking about rees mogg, the whole lot, determine everything. this is very specifically about cabinet ministers. i know. sajid javid was the surprise. he started asa remainer. javid was the surprise. he started as a remainer. he got this extraordinary job. as a remainer. he got this extraordinaryjob. and he shafted
10:34 pm
mrs may. 0r extraordinaryjob. and he shafted mrs may. or so it appeared. yaz be, brexiteer. i do think the hardliners are playing hard and it is making things difficult to get a sensible conclusion. results of delaying the process. what emerges everywhere i go when i talk to people, irrespective of how people voted, people are saying, for heaven ‘s sake, get on with it. this is delaying the process. let's looked at the front page of the observer. more of the same. yet —— let nobody accused the bbc of not being evenhanded. we have jeremy accused the bbc of not being evenhanded. we havejeremy corbyn and his problems on the same issue. and this is it. everything is ripped apart. one of the lessons that some are drawing from the not as
10:35 pm
wonderful local election results as people might have got is that a lot of remainers would vote for the party except that we don't know what they stand for. they say he should be more supportive of attempts in the house of lords that to delay this stuff for as long as we can. corbyn cannot carry on like this. he has got to make a strong, tough decision, because it's kind of like he is dreaming away, hoping this will fade away, you will wake up and it is all gone. the other thing is labour's performance in the local elections. it wasn't a general election. it was not a national election. it was not a national election. it was just an election in pa rt election. it was just an election in part of the country. many people feel labour did not do too well. they should have done better in london. maybe their expectation
10:36 pm
levels were too high. i don't know. there is an argument that mid—term up there is an argument that mid—term up againsta there is an argument that mid—term up against a government that suffered the humiliation this comment has suffered even in the last week, they should have done better. all of this adds to the argument. the lib dems are getting the only voice for a lot of remainers. dead or council seats than anybody else. is important. jeremy corbyn has to say something. yeah, geta jeremy corbyn has to say something. yeah, get a grip. he would say he is saying what he believes. they started from a high water mark. there is an argument in local elections young people don't turn out in the same number as they do in general elections. they didn't do badly. they got the best results in london since 1971. sometimes the press lays out the failures. they
10:37 pm
did get good results but they didn't break the ceilings for various reasons. i am disappointed. break the ceilings for various reasons. lam disappointed. i break the ceilings for various reasons. i am disappointed. i don't know what the labour party believes when it comes to brexit. i sometimes feel as if even i, on the left, and being played. what is it they are doing with it? clarify your position. let's move on from brexit. look at the other story on the front page of the observer. a donald trump tea m page of the observer. a donald trump team by a firm ferre dirty operation on the iran arms deal. a lot in that headline. there are people out there watching this now shaking their heads at yet another revelation about trump. how long can this go on? the other day we had him saying that instead of having tough gun law, the justification for tough gun law, the justification for tough gun law was that everybody would starve
10:38 pm
themselves to death like they do in london if they didn't have such tough gun laws. this ridiculous speech about rivers of blood in hospitals in london. now we have a revelation that aids hired an israeli intelligence agency to orchestrated dirty tricks campaign against key individuals from the obama administration who helped negotiate the iran peace deal, the deal by which iran promises to curtail its in that area if the west lay—off on sanctions. perfectly believable. jack straw is quoted as saying this is outrageous, an appalling allegation, which illustrates a high level of desperation by trump and benyamin netanyahu, desperation by trump and benyamin neta nyahu, not so desperation by trump and benyamin netanyahu, not so much to discredit the deal, but undermine those around it. it is extraordinary if that is what they did. we don't know for sure. it is sources. it is an extraordinary allegation. but the dangerous thing is that both the
10:39 pm
israeli government, the present israeli government, the present israeli government, the present israeli government, and trump seem almost to want this war with iran. do you believe that? yes, i do. both of them are so misguided. this is how the first world war happened, bit by bit by bit. actually, it's not a bit by bit by bit. actually, it's nota game. bit by bit by bit. actually, it's not a game. some of the evidence netanyahu provided was discredited almost immediately. you don't want to go there. trump has until may 12 to go there. trump has until may 12 to make up his mind about the deal. let's go to the first —— front page of the sunday telegraph. it has got a related story over at the iran nuclear deal. it is part of the whole thing. the way the so—called
10:40 pm
evidence was built up. i'm not a fan of the iranian regime at all. i think they are authoritarian, they are terrible, their human rights records are terrible. it is not a regimel records are terrible. it is not a regime i love but actually i don't wa nt regime i love but actually i don't want a regime i love but actually i don't wanta war regime i love but actually i don't want a war with that country. that's all. i think both trump and israel are on some all. i think both trump and israel are on some kind ofjourney, which needs to be stopped. are on some kind ofjourney, which needs to be stoppedlj are on some kind ofjourney, which needs to be stopped. i hope you are wrong. i really hope i am wrong. this story specifically is about the israeli ambassador to london making these claims. saying don't trust them, basically. sorry, i don't trust the israeli ambassador either. so let's not give it too much credibility. let's move on to fergie. really surprising news broke mid—evening on the bbc and other news outlets that sir alex ferguson has u nfortu nately news outlets that sir alex ferguson has unfortunately had a brain haemorrhage. it happened this morning at his home in cheshire. the

first clue when —— came when his son, who manages doncaster rovers, said he had to go on for a family issue and wouldn't be managing his team's game. it and it was taken to a local hospital, transferred to the salford royal and that is where the operation took place. it went very well, apparently. and hopefully, he will be absolutely fine. it says he will be absolutely fine. it says he will need a long period of treatment in that hospital. already there are well—wishers. gary lineker, the captain of manchester united, michael carrick, and manchester city saying all the very best. he is the best football manager we have ever had as —— in this country. and i say this as a manchester city manager.|j surrender to your manly wisdom. this as a manchester city manager.|j surrender to your manly wisdomm is not only manly! the best football manager we have ever had. he seemed to have been well liked.|j
10:42 pm
manager we have ever had. he seemed to have been well liked. i think the players were scared stiff of him half of the time. infamous for the hairdryer treatment. he was the boss and they respected him. the front page of the mail on sunday has a story about the new home secretary. three pages. iwill summarise, because according to the mail on sunday two uncles of the home secretary have been accused of running a cash for visa scam, trying to get migrants who want to come to britain, charging them a lot of money, according to this news item. hugely long. charging them money to get into britain. some of these people allege they made a lot of money and nothing happened. sajid javid says he knew nothing about it. these are his uncles. one of them is
10:43 pm
dead. we all have mad uncles, so i don't think we should all be accountable. even within the royal family there are lots of mad uncles. i'm intrigued by why the mail on sunday would give it three pages. me, too. and not a fan of sajid javid as a politician or even as a home secretary. that is a political issue. this is not about his politics. something stinks about it. in fairness, if it is true, and he says he knows nothing about it, and his officials have declined to say whether i might not he told the prime minister about this link, if it is true, if the home secretary has relatives who are running this kind of scam, that is a story. by anybody‘s standards. whether it is worth three pages of a national newspaper on sunday is another question. a very successful paper. who am!
10:44 pm
question. a very successful paper. who am i tojudge. question. a very successful paper. who am i to judge. we question. a very successful paper. who am i tojudge. we haven't question. a very successful paper. who am i to judge. we haven't done the journalism, so we don't know the fa cts the journalism, so we don't know the facts behind it. certainly one of the uncles has denied the claims of a scam as lies. lies designed to target mrjavid. a scam as lies. lies designed to target mr javid. three a scam as lies. lies designed to target mrjavid. three people were interviewed in pakistan. they claim, they allege... it will be interesting to see his considered response to this story. you are right, john, that he is now running the immigration department. but even so, i don't think anybody should be held accountable for what your relatives do. his response may well be to say nothing. the front page of the sunday express. unfortunately, you have got two people here who are
