organised crime are already part of daily life here in basra, iraq's second city. now there's a new threat, crystal meth. i've been invited tojoin the police frontline. this is the elite force that goes out every night on raids to try and crack down on organised crime in this city. they think the suspect is inside.

they're keen to show off the results of their efforts. today, hundreds of suspects are being paraded in front of the cameras. the police want to show the local media, and i suppose the community, the arrests they've made and the progress they're making to crackdown on crime basra. general abdul karim is leading that effort. a war veteran, he recently returned to basra from the fight against isis in the north of iraq. 0k, we're going to go and meet some people whose been arrested. wow, 0k. when did you arrest these guys? where were these guys arrested?

police say consumption of meth has been doubling year—on—year. so you found all these weapons? that's crystal meth. how many grams? 0ne. ig. so why has crystal meth taken hold in this city? weak border security has meant drugs have flooded into the country, and economic collapse with youth unemployment at almost 50% means there's a ready for the drug. after years of war, occupation and insurgency, the locals here had hoped their city would become the next dubai. but there are no skyscrapers here, just high unemployment, crime and corruption.

i went to see shallal‘s family. salaam—alaikum... they're struggling to get by without electricity or any clean water. his father has serious health issues. what do you think about iraq now in comparison to what it was like when saddam was in power? the swat team are on the move again. this city is awash with weapons left over from the war and the fight against isis. the team are looking for their second target.

and it is in these impoverished districts where crystal meth addiction flourishes. many addicts and dealers end up here at the prison. this man is the deputy governor. what are the issues you face here? prison authorities have had to expand detention centres to cope with the numbers of attics and dealers. major, this is one of the rooms?

how many people in this room? and this is a combination of drug dealers and drug users? yeah. you just keep them all here together in one room? yeah. i am taken deep into the prison to see what the conditions are like for those who have been convicted. quite overwhelming. i mean, i've been to many prisons in many parts of the world but to see these people just crammed into here, they take shifts sleeping so one person will sleep and one person will stay up all night and then they swap.

at risk of being lost. hello. wednesday gets off to a fine start for many of us but for some it's not going to last as we get rain heading in from the west. we saw a weather system move through on tuesday. this one here, the leading edge of cooler air so things cool down for many. not quite into east anglia and the south—east of england, but in the day ahead, that process is complete. low pressure to the north—west of us and that's feeding in cooler, fresher conditions across all parts, and a bit of rain, as i mentioned, coming into the west. although most will start fine

and dry for the morning, single—figure temperatures under clear skies but some in east and south—east england still around 10 or possibly 11 degrees. your eyes will be drawn to this weather system that will soon in the morning turn things wetter into northern ireland, into western scotland, the wind picking up as well, quite gusty into the western isles but it's really coming in very slowly so a lot of cloud increases ahead of that. many will be staying dry even on into the afternoon, particularly across eastern parts of the uk, and still some sunny spells into east anglia and south—east england, but temperatures here down significantly compared with recent days. that's how we end the afternoon. going into the evening, some of us will be getting a wet evening rush—hour. some heavy bursts affecting western parts of scotland beginning to pull away from the western isles, patchy in nature to the east of scotland, not much into north—east england and clearing from northern ireland some will get the sun coming back before the end of the day, but more of wales and western england starting to get outbreaks of rain pushing into parts of the midlands too.

much of eastern england will be dry and once this weather system crosses all parts, wednesday night into thursday morning, there isn't a huge amount of rain left on it. after the heat of the recent days if you want something on the garden, i think you're going to be disappointed. dry weather on thursday. there'll be a few showers developing, though, particularly into scotland, maybe the odd heavy one with a rumble of thunder. northern ireland and northern england, the rest of england and for much of wales, it is looking dry, variable cloud and sunny spells. 0n the breezy side, if anything it's a little bit cooler still and some of us for the rest of the week towards in the north—west of the uk in particular will find temperatures below average for the time of year. another fine start for much of the uk on friday, but then we see another weather system gathering out to the west. the winds picking up ahead of that. while many on friday will stay dry, some will start to the outbreaks of rain. some uncertainty about the timing of this and the progression north—eastwards, so we will keep you updated, and temperatures still none too special.
