# hey brother, do you remember when we were kids with no fear? it's an incredible feeling, because the electricity that is charged from the crowd, the eurovision crowd in that arena, is like no other audience i have ever experienced. go, surie! and she does have many supporters. however... does britain stand a chance? no. once upon a time the uk was a eurovision superpower. the last 20 years, not so good. time, ithought, to talk to dr eurovision. yes, paul really has a phd in eurovision. i think there is a problem with perception. we don't take it seriously enough? yes, people think the music is rubbish. there is some good talent in this contest but we don't see it in the same way. # hold your head up, don't give up...

and our odds this year? 200 to one. but remember, there is always hope. have you thought about if you win? i'll probably just spontaneously combust into glitter and feathers because that is eurovision. # don't give up... david sillito, bbc news, lisbon. not long to wait! now on bbc news, a look ahead to sportsday at 6.30 tonight. coming up on bbc news we will be ahead of a big weekend of rugby in bilbao, we will be their head of the cup finalfor cardiff bilbao, we will be their head of the cup final for cardiff blues are up against gloucester, looking for a record equalling third title. tomorrow's champions cup final, lei nster tomorrow's champions cup final, leinster digging an racing 92. we will look forward to the championship play—off, and will

former england captain wayne rooney leave the premier league for american major league soccer? that is all coming up at 6:30pm. now on bbc news it is time for the film review... hello and welcome to the film review on bbc news. to take us to this week's cinema releases, as ever, mark kermode. what we have? yes, breaking in, with a twist. we have revenge, a gruelling thriller. and the cured, and you look at the old zombie formula. new zombies! it is a dark week, mr kermode, it really is.
5:48 pm
yes, bilbao film festival is on, strange week. this is our film with a twist, breaking in. gabrielle union is shaun, who inherits a house basically like a fortress, she goes there with her children and it is immediately broken into by thieves. then her children are held captive in the house, the thieves try to find a safe, and she is outside. they have said to her, you are the women at the mercy of strangers, you have no chance, but they have seriously misjudged her desire to prove that, in her own words, ma'ams don't run. use the clip... -- mums don't run. use the clip... -- mums don't run. use the clip... -- mums don't run. here is a clip. you've got to be kidding me. yo, eddie! go... was that mum? gunshots. here

she comes. that is billy burke from the twilight movies, who plays the father in the twilight films. a lot them and love his character. don't mess with her. i get that! i like that, positive. that is pretty much the interesting thing about the movie. very much a nuts and bolts b—movie thriller. i like that idea she is outside the house and they are inside, so it kind of turned that around. i like the idea that they just completely underestimate her, just imagine she is a mother,
5:50 pm
and actually she proves more than a match for them. she doesn't need a man to comment and save her, and it isa man to comment and save her, and it is a great performance and i think she makes the most of it. that said, it is not a movie that will change the world. very much as i said very nuts and bolts b—movie. which under other circumstances you might see going straight to dvd, but it is short, cuts to the chase, i was never bored. if it is not remarkable, it is impressively solid, with a nice central twist. i liked it more than i thought i was going to. i love it when i can pick out your little phrases i know that they want on a poster, "impressively solid." a good one. take us through the next of your challenging... this is breaking in, this attention grabbing movie from french director james mcteigue. a young woman takes revenge on men who assaulted her and left her for revenge on men who assaulted her and left herfor dead. revenge on men who assaulted her and left her for dead. taken as a feminist take on the rape revenge

genre, often quite misogynist genre. this has a dear rich visual side wood style, almost a bagel looked —— appearing visual style —— gerrish style. it is very stylish, very well done, very efficiently done. i am not sure it is as ground—breaking as some critics think. people have been saying it is the first of this genre of movie done with a feminist line, but that is not true. but what it is isa but that is not true. but what it is is a very good calling card, a film which announces itself with its style, it is very gory, and speaking asa style, it is very gory, and speaking as a horror fan style, it is very gory, and speaking as a horrorfan i like that, that when it goes into that generic stuff it does it properly. i know that you are not a horror movie fan. there we re are not a horror movie fan. there were reports of some people finding it too gory and not able to get through the screenings. you get reports of those people practically needing an ambulance and so on and you never know whether the

distributors have said, well, let's talk that up because it will attract attention, but it sounds , 1. “ii! because i it, itf ea cured? mi cured? not face it, i'm afraid. the cured? not a big zombie fan, i understand? duris week! laughter set ina laughter set in a world after an outbreak of a virus which has turned people effectively into zombies, they have done terrible things. but then they find a cure, and the cured people are now sent back into the community as the curate. an irish horrorfilm, with the political slant. it is about how do we reintegrate these people who have done terrible things but are now apparently different? this is clip. the cure was supposed to be some sort of great hope but
5:53 pm
things are just getting worse. that's not fair, my daughter was released. she can't hurt anyone any more. people need to give them a second chance. we have given them every chance. they have not integrated, they are not like us... haven't you seen the news, the violence? haven't you seen the news, the violence ? there haven't you seen the news, the violence? there is something wrong with them. mixed voices they are just they arejust some. which they are just scum. left is home. let the best of these

movies they are based on ideas. fairly low—budget, ellen page plays the woman accepting her brother—in—law back into the house, he has been cured, and no one is quite sure what he has done. it is about ideas, reintegration, about how you deal with the aftermath of strife, the aftermath of that, and if you look at george romero's zombie movies, night of the living dead, it's aboutfifi zombie movies, night of the living dead, it's aboutgeéfi other vivisection, they really about else. all really about something else. this is really brief, before it goes to dvd. that is where might find its main audience but it is a film of ideas, and sometimes they are not perfectly expressed but at least it has them, and i thought it was kind of intriguing. i am interested in whether it is about discrimination, and interesting that it is set in ireland, about two sides violently set apart from each other...” ireland, about two sides violently set apart from each other... i think it is kind of more universal than that, i think it is very much about what you do in post—conflict
5:55 pm
situations, but absolutely, discrimination, it is a theme of it, because although with the people who are cured or saying, we are being discriminated against, and we have rights like everybody else and people are saying, no, you don't, because you were these terrible things in the past. i think you can read all these different interpretations into it and that for me is an indication of a good film, that afterward you can see, what you think it was about? i think the ideas in it are valuable and interesting, even if sometimes you can see the limitations of the film itself. i don't mind. i'd rather have a film that raised questions than one thatjust solved it all and was perfectly put together but didn't really raise any difficult questions. mm. best out... there we re questions. mm. best out... there were things about this i loved. lean on pete. the performances, the central thrust of the story, a young man, hisjourney, central thrust of the story, a young man, his journey, shall we central thrust of the story, a young man, hisjourney, shall we call it? through life, through wild deserts? yes, the andrew haigh adaptation
5:56 pm
about the story of a boy and his horse. 0n the one hand i thought it was a coming—of—age story but, yes, i think it is more universal. i thought it looked beautiful, i thought it looked beautiful, i thought charlie plummer was fantastic. so much about him reminded me of james fantastic. so much about him reminded me ofjames dean, so vulnerable, so fragile, but a real sturdiness, and the scenes with just him and the horse, and the scenes with him and steve brucejenny, who i know... they were an absolute highlight of the film —— steve buscemi. i watched highlight of the film —— steve buscemi. iwatched it highlight of the film —— steve buscemi. i watched it with someone he knew nothing about horses and you don't really need that. no, you just need to know about loneliness and growing up and i think most people know about at least one is not two of those things. and steve buscemi is great. the movie is kind, nobody is great. the movie is kind, nobody is two—dimensional or thrown away. beautiful landscapes as well, if you wa nt beautiful landscapes as well, if you want that as a bonus. what about
5:57 pm
anyone who might want to watch a dvd. well, the previous palm d'or winner, the square. the creator of this museum, who seems to be terribly right on, terribly, you know, thinking about equal rights and everything, but actually due to the theft of his mobile phone, he is in torment. it is a very interesting piece. at times it is darkly satirical, there is seen in it about a piece of performance art that is one of the creepiest things i have ever seen, one of the creepiest things i have ever seen, but, and one of the creepiest things i have everseen, but, and i one of the creepiest things i have ever seen, but, and i say this, it is not a horrorfilm! laughter 0k? laughter ok? you are a good man, you brought me something! duris week but an interesting one. thank you very much. dr kermode, i should get it right! i will get told off otherwise. 0k, see you next week. a quick reminder before we go, all the film news and reviews across the bbc
5:58 pm
bbc.co.uk/markkermode, and our previous shows are on iplayer of course. that's it for this week. goodbye. hello, good evening. some lovely sunshine across the east of the country, the rain in the west, and it will probably swap so tomorrow the west may see the best of the sunshine and between the showers. some late evening sunshine for northern ireland, western fringes of england, and the rain tends to wea ken england, and the rain tends to weaken at least into the east of england and scotland but it will hold temperatures on the last night, and further west it will be cold a night in contrast. sandwiched between low pressure to the west on this front to the east this weekend, and this at times will pep up the rain in eastern areas particularly late on. the lower pressure further west will bring sharp downpours
5:59 pm
possibly go here, not for all but they will be heavy, slow—moving and thundery. in the sunshine for scotland, northern ireland, north—west england and wales, much brighter, feeling quite pleasant. sunday, the chances are we will see this front still hanging around across northern and eastern england, eventually to the east of scotland. the west is best. good spells of sunshine to eurovision song contest and in the sunshine temperatures getting to average four about this time of year —— good spells of sunshine over here and in the sunshine over here and in the sunshine temperature is getting to average for about this time of year. goodbye. young people are being failed by mental health care,
6:00 pm
warn university leaders after a rise in the number of student deaths. the stark words come after the deaths of three students in the city of bristol in just the last month. if we ignore it, we will have failed a generation. we will be setting ourselves up for huge costs and burdens on the nhs but, more than that, we will be destroying lives. we'll have a special report on why universities and the health service are failing to identity and support students who are vulnerable. also tonight: more money for grammar schools in england. will it mean more choice for parents or greater social division? the women let down by smear test failures in ireland and the children who'll now lose their mothers to cancer. it hasn't hit me that i'm dying. because i'm so... worried...
