this is bbc news. the headlines: one person has been killed and four others injured after being stabbed in a busy part of central paris, in what authorities are treating as terrorism. the attacker was shot dead by police and is reported to have shouted allahu akbar. so—called islamic state say they were behind it. north korea has announced plans to start dismantling its nuclear test site in less than two weeks, and says international experts and journalists will be invited to watch. president trump's thanked north korea and called it a very smart and gracious gesture. votes are being counted in iraq after the first general election since the government declared victory over the islamic state group. but the country's electoral commission is reporting a low turnout, with less than 45% of eligible voters casting their ballots. countryside campaigners are calling for action on what they say is an appalling lack of progress in improving mobile phone coverage in rural areas.
1:31 am
they have been backed by more than 50 mps, who have accused mobile operators of failing to put up new masts, despite help from government. jon donnison reports. these days, life without your mobile for many seems almost unimaginable. but, in some parts of rural britain, it remains a reality. the communications regulator ofcom says only 57% of people living in premises in rural areas are able to make phone calls on all four mobile networks. that compares to 90% in urban areas. now, 50 rural mps have written to the secretary of state for digital culture, media and sport, matt hancock, calling for urgent action to change that. they want legally binding targets to force mobile operators to improve coverage. but the operators say they are investing millions of pounds in rural areas,
1:32 am
but that planning applications for new mobile phone masts are often rejected by local people. the government says mobile phone coverage is improving and that it has already changed planning laws to make it easier to put up new masts. it says the mobile companies now need to respond to those changes, and act fast to increase coverage in rural areas. jon donnison, bbc news. liz saville—roberts, plaid cymru mp and vice chair of the all—party parliamentary group on rural business, who co—ordinated the mps‘ letter, told us why action was necessary. at present, what we have is this fallacy that competition is king, and that that will suit every region of the uk. that is not suiting rural areas. there ought to be a universal service obligation for all providers, and not just local monopolies. and what i and other mps are concerned is that the new —

the roll—out of, say, the 700 megahertz we're expecting late in the day, 2020, that still is not going to cover 95% of the areas of the uk. now, we're looking for a situation where ofcom should be responsible for making sure that there is universal coverage, and also so we move away from the situation where the commercial confidentiality of providers is more important than actually making sure that we have a proper coverage. now on bbc news, the travel show. this week in the show: taking on manila's traffic hell. how the system works is, as the people come on the money starts to flow, and it all comes through me. you don't want a distracted driver, because the traffic here is a little bit crazy. the filipinos who feed your body and your soul. it is designed scientifically and nutritionally to make you happy and calm. and 300 years of new orleans.

in the world. one of the first things you realise when you land in manila is the traffic is awful. hurry! with no metro and a very limited bus and train service, the backbone of its public transport is currently this — it's a jeepney. the design is modelled on the us jeeps that were abandoned here and repurposed after the second world war. to this day they are still the best way to get around. the problem is, the system is quite tricky for a newcomer to get to grips with. 0k, as i weave my way through the traffic that is now on the sidewalk, i am looking for one that says libertad, and so there should be, in paint, on one of these, the place i'm looking for. libertad — this must be it. if you have a smartphone, it makes things a lot easier. there is an app called sakay.ph where you can put in your origin and destination. so in this case, intramuros is where we are, we want to go to libertad, it tells us to walk to right here where the jeepneys
1:36 am
are, it will be about an hour and about us $1. that is not bad, that's pretty cheap. we are taking this journey on a weekend when the roads are quieter. during the week the jams can go on for miles. and i soon discover that if you sit right behind the driver, you're expected to help him out. ten pesos. so how the system seems to work is, as the people come on, the money starts to flow, and it all comes through me. because you don't want a distracted driver, especially in the streets of manila, because the traffic here is a little bit crazy. it is my first time on a jeepney today. i am wondering if you have any tips for me. it is better to sit beside the driver. more fresh air. it is more fresh air, but at the same time, the whiplash effect of the long... it is like a fish tail, it is more stable in the front. keep your bag close.
1:37 am
always here? if you want to stop, tap on the roof. so that is go... that is stop? and two is go. i can do that maybe about six times before my fingernail feels like it wants to pop right off. as if this wasn't complicated enough, these old workhorses are currently being phased out. around 200,000 of the most polluting vehicles are being replaced by cleaner models. and those plans have sparked protests and strikes from the drivers who worry that, despite schemes designed to help them, many will not be able to afford to replace their current vehicle. some are concerned for theirjobs.
1:38 am
this is going to be like christmas and springtime for you. so i take nel to meet the source of his worries face—to—face. are you ready, for, your newjeepney! this, we are told, is the future of public transport in manila. this is the e—jeepney, the modernjeepney. it is all—electric which is why it is quiet, it has no emissions, no pollution, no smoke. so no noise, no smoke, no problem. the other difference is that it will have automatic fare collection system machines, so that the payment system is cashless.
1:39 am
so you don't have to worry about the one, two, three. passing the money? i do like how it is in the same location as the guy who passes the money. you don't have to worry about people going for freebies. people will be caught. he said that sometimes people look at his cashbox funny, sometimes they take it. so it is very dangerous. as well as a card reader it will have wi—fi and air conditioning which will make life much more comfortable for its passengers. how about the music radio? of course! that is the number one concern of the driver and passenger, is the music. we have a stereo system and speakers also, not installed right now but that is the number one thing that drivers and the passengers want. but there is really only one way
1:40 am
to convince nel once and for all. we're taking this baby for a spin. here we go! yeah! laughs. you're smiling. why are you smiling? are you having fun? i'm happy. no sounds, no engine sound. very quiet. you can focus on driving and listening to your music. yeah. whoa, whoa, 0k, ok, that was close. ok, so it is more minibus then jeepney, but what it lacks in the charm that its ancestor had, it makes up for in green credentials. it's thought the process of replacing the older vehicles will start later this year. with that rollout, and a new underground under construction right now, manila's roads could be a very different place injust
1:41 am
a few years‘ time. so now you know how to get around, here is our guide of things that you can see and do the next time you find yourself in manila. intramuros, or the walled city, is the most obvious attraction, especially for history fans. it used to be the seat of government when the philippines was ruled by spain. these days you can see the best of what it has to offer on a guided walking tour. let me welcome you all to... intramuros! the best known is carlos celdran‘s "walk this way" tour, which is part history lesson... this flag did not exist yet, because this flag was a symbol of our rebellion against spain. and part performance art.
1:42 am
the black nazarene is the philippines‘ most revered holy relic, and it is kept in the central quiapo church. it is a lifesize statue ofjesus on his way to crucifixion, and it is regarded by some filipinos to be miraculous. just a touch of it can cure disease, they say. everyjanuary up to 12 million worshippers turn up to carry the nazarene through the streets, in an event called the translacion, a truly spectacular sight. when you're ready to eat, we can heartily recommend one of these dampa markets dotted around the city. it's quite strange how this works. you can pick any of this fresh seafood you want. it's not a normalfish market, that's not where it ends. you take it over to the restaurant over here and they cook it for you, fresh. it is reasonably priced and it is incredibly quick. # this is a man's world... # this is a man's world #. finally, it's a stereotype that filipinos are born entertainers, but one thing is for sure, they definitely like their karaoke. you will find singing opportunities right across the city, everywhere from bars to hotels to department stores.
1:43 am
but if that's not hard—core enough, try your hand at videoke, a slightly more competitive version that scores your performance. # total eclipse of the heart #. still to come on the travel show: tasting the smog of some of the world's dirtiest cities. we weren't allowed to use the real pollution within the domes, because if we pumped in carbon monoxide and nitric oxide we would actually kill people. hello. and i eat at the manila restaurant that aims to make me a calmer, happier, better person. so don't go away.
1:44 am
this week i am exploring the filipino capital manila. noisy, busy, bustling, but full of character. it smells good! like jasmine, almost. this is quiapo church, and around is its eccentric market. the biggest religion in the philippines is christianity thanks to the arrival of the spanish in the 16th century, but what is really fascinating is how that has kind of meshed together with the indigenous religions to create a unique mix. there is a service happening at quiapo church today which is why the square is very busy. it is filled with stalls selling everything — altars, relics, folk medicine, and wishing candles! so each colour means a different wish? travel, love, money... love, do i need love? laughs. sure. so tess recommended pink for love.
1:45 am
i wanted travel or success but she seemed to think i needed the pink one. more from manila in a moment. time for trending travel, your monthly mash—up of travel—related stories, snacks and videos online. as air pollution continues to make headlines, visitors to london recently had the chance to sample the smog of other world cities. it's courtesy of these pollution pods installed at somerset house. within each pod there is the pollution from different cities in the world. notjust a question of the pollution being greater or lesser, it's a question of what makes up that pollution. for example, in london, we have diesel emissions
1:46 am
whereas in sao paulo where they use ethanol as their main fuel we have a very vinegary sense to the air. we weren't allowed to use the real pollution within the domes because if we put in those fumes, we would kill people. we have had to recreate all of the pollution is using safe chemicals. we have had requests from china, 0slo, paris. we really do plan to take this around different cities in the world. the exhibit has now finished but visitors can still see the union jack installed on the roof. it reacts to london's air—quality turning a dirty great when the city is particularly polluted. lovely! if any millennials are heading south of the capital, they might want to grab their flat caps and flat whites,
1:47 am
and visit a popular uk seaside destination that has been nominated the world's most hipster city. brighton came top by a relocation website ranking nearly a50 cities comparing their amount of cafes, record stores and vintage shops against the number of residents. if you're prone to bouts of homesickness, this nomad couple have found a novel solution. they bring their home with them. the tiny house exhibition launched in 2015 and since they have clocked up more than 40,000 miles across the united states, updating their site with posts. i was in a transitional period in my life and looking for more simplicity and flexibility and a tiny house really seemed to fit the bill. i was all about it. absolutely all about it. he had two conditions, a bed and air conditioning. we have both. in our travels, we have met so many tiny householders.
