this is bbc news. i'm christian fraser in windsor. royal crowd pleasers princes harry and william take a wedding evening walkabout in windsor to meet their most loyal fans. just as they did the night before william's wedding to catherine. it was a moment for snaps and selfies as the people planning to spend the night guarding their spot on tomorrow's procession route were overjoyed to shake the princes‘ hands. while her husband—to—be met the crowds, meghan and her mother retired to their country house hotel. earlier they had tea with the queen. now with less than 2a hours to go, the last preparations at the castle are under way. i'm martine croxall. the other main stories on bbc news at 8. up to ten people are killed in a high school shooting in texas. and the former russian agent, sergei skripal, leaves hospital more than two months after he was poisoned with a nerve agent in salisbury. what met a good evening. the crowds
8:01 pm
are here. they are all happy. everyone getting in this period at it, along the barrier tonight. many of them hunkering down for the night. there'll be seeing songs here, eating picnics, preparing for the big event tomorrow. it's less than 18 hours to go to the big event, and final preparations are under way here in windsor. earlier this evening, prince harry and his brother the duke of cambridge greeted well—wishers in the town centre, chatting to some of the thousands of people who have gathered to celebrate prince harry and meghan markle‘s wedding. a more private meeting has
8:02 pm
also taken place today, as the queen and duke of edinburgh welcomed ms markle and her mother doria at windsor castle. and this morning, we learned that the prince of wales will accompany the bride down the aisle at tomorrow's ceremony. our royal correspondent nicholas witchell reports. the night before his wedding, and this evening, harry emerged from windsor castle to meet the crowds. he was accompanied by his brother and best man, prince william. some of those behind the railings, and these of course are the most enthusiastic of royal fans, have already been waiting for several days. waiting of course for moments like this. the wait which at least has been made a little easier by the spring weather. windsor has been basking in sunshine and bracing itself for what promises to be the biggest royal event to be staged here in recent times.
8:03 pm
the choreography is complete. harry and meghan leaving kensington palace for windsor this afternoon, were evidently in complete agreement that the absent father of the bride should be replaced by the father of the groom. it will be prince charles who escorts miss markel to the altar. a statement from kensington palace said miss meghan markle has asked his royal highness to accompany her. down the aisle. the prince of wales is pleased to be able to welcome this markle to the royal family in this markle to the royal family in this way. this is how it will work. missed markle will enter the chapel, and walked the first part of the afternoon do the nave, accompanied by the tenant bridesmaids and pageboy. then at the choir screen at the left of the picture, prince charles willjoin her and a score her through the most historic part of the chapel, to where harry will be waiting for his bride. they will
8:04 pm
stand just there by the chapel‘s high altar. they will exchange their marriage vows and then the archbishop of canterbury will declare them to be husband and wife. for the bride, that solemn moment of her marriage into the british royal family will be witnessed by only one member of her own family, her mother, doria ragland. she was at windsor castle this afternoon to have tea with a queen. there had been speculation that she might have walked her daughter to the altar and wedding watchers and windsor, there was some disappointment that she is not. we would like to see her mum walk her down the aisle or perp walk herself down the aisle. if it were me,| herself down the aisle. if it were me, i would herself down the aisle. if it were me, iwould be pleased herself down the aisle. if it were me, i would be pleased with charles walking me. it is the father figure, do you know what i'm saying? hey meghan, i love you! you let my son!
8:05 pm
welcome to the family. if she prefers not to, i think it is wonderful that prince charles is doing it. so now it isjust the finishing touches to be put to plans which have been worked on for months. windsor is preparing for crowds on a possibly unprecedented scale. police have launched one of the biggest security operations mounted by the tens valley force. the military who will be operated are in barracks getting ready. these the household calvary, who will be escorting the new couple on the procession. it is a royal wedding to be celebrated and enjoyed. just one more night on the pavement. try to keep awake. tomorrow is harry and meghan‘s big date. they will tell you it is all worth it. they were waiting forjust a
8:06 pm
glimpse of the royal family. well a lot of people delighted by the prince's walkabout this evening. of course many of the crowds have been gathering since yesterday, camping overnight to find a prime spot ready for tomorrow. in particular this happy chappy who snapped a selfie of himself with both princes! first prince william and then prince harry and doesn't he look like the cat that caught the cream! a delightful photo and one of many memories he and so many people will treasure from this special occasion. lets go to our royal correspondent daniela relph who's at castle hill. did he looks relaxed? he really did. i was just watching him as he came out of the gate from inside the castle to go back outside to see all the crowds. he looked incredibly relaxed. going up to, picking up the kids in the crowd, shaking hands, i saw someone kids in the crowd, shaking hands, i saw someone handing him a teddy. people asking him how he was, are you excited? people asking him how he was, are you excited ? his people asking him how he was, are you excited? his answer to
8:07 pm
everything seemed to be a course i am. he even told somebody he was going to the pub tonight. he looked very relaxed. it is interesting, watching them go to the crowds as they started to approach people, waving at people as they went over, they actually avoided the people who we re they actually avoided the people who were trying to take selfies. they went straight to people they could actually talk to. so rather than go to someone who wanted a photo, they went to people who wanted to chat and shake their hands rather than have their photo taken. they took a lot of questions and tried to get to as many people as possible. as you said, these people who have been waiting out here in that area right in front of windsor castle, are that die—hard loyal fans. some in front of windsor castle, are that die—hard loyalfans. some of them have been sleeping overnight. some have been sleeping overnight. some have been sleeping overnight. some have been here since monday or tuesday of this week. they have been here four nights or so now. a lot of them are real loyalists when it comes to the royal family. i them are real loyalists when it comes to the royalfamily. i could see the guy in the pictures right now, you just showed the selfie, in oui’ now, you just showed the selfie, in our own footage. william and harry,
8:08 pm
they have a great close friendship, relationship, as a sibling, because of the life experience they have had. losing their mother so young. this is an important part of the whole wedding occasion, really. prince william has said this is going to be his moment to take great revenge on his younger brother in terms of the best man speech. it is important scene, to go out into the crowd and sharing their day with the public. it is interesting that you say they looked as if they were going to the pub, because the royal watcher, he was talking about the fa ct watcher, he was talking about the fact that they did not have a tie on, which is not something the prince of wales would have died. they are quite at ease, and of course a royal wedding is a special, but this one is perhaps another opportunity to reset the royal family and go again. that is important, isn't it? it is. as you said, there is a touch of informality about this particular event. a lot of it has to do with
8:09 pm
where prince harry is in the line of succession. he is probably not going to be king one day. there is a little more freedom that comes with this position. you are looking at the picture of what happened earlier, but where i am, inside with her castle, outside saint george's chapel, it gives you a sense of, where i am now, look at behind me. he gives you a sense of the grandeur of the occasion. this is more personal, more intimate, it is going to feel like a royal wedding, take it from me. it feels like quite an occasion when you're actually here next to the chapel, looking at all the final preparations being put in place. having said that, there are going to be touches that feel and look different. the gospel choir, the bride walking part of the way down the aisle on her own with her bridesmaids and page boys. the cellist, the solo cellist, they are away from the traditional pattern from a royal wedding ceremony. there are going to be flourishes that feel very different. meanwhile, as he was
8:10 pm
telling us, so details ironed out today. we now know prince charles will walk the bride part of the way down the church, which spares doornail i , doria ragland. her role this evening is crucial. she has to settle down the bride. for the big day tomorrow. that is right. she will play a crucial role in keeping her daughter called this evening, before this enormous day tomorrow. we saw them arriving at their hotel a little earlier on this evening. the car pulling outside. it is a hotel well known, a notorious hotel in many ways, outside maidenhead. about 20 minutes away. there, doria ragland in a cream dress and dark jacket, with her daughter, waiting to the cameras. people calling out
8:11 pm
to the cameras. people calling out to her, beating the hotel manager as they go in and this is where they will spend the evening at clifton before coming into the castle tomorrow. as you say, they are a very close mother and daughter relationship. it will beat doria who has thejob of relationship. it will beat doria who has the job of keeping relationship. it will beat doria who has thejob of keeping meaghan,, trying to make sure she is not feeling overwhelmed by what is going to happen tomorrow. 0f feeling overwhelmed by what is going to happen tomorrow. of course, doria ragland herself, she may be feeling a little overwhelmed for what she has been through in the last few daysin has been through in the last few days in terms of meeting just about every senior member of the royal family. culminating this afternoon when doria ragland, prince harry, meghan markle, had tea, afternoon tea here at windsor castle with the queen and duke of edinburgh. tea here at windsor castle with the queen and duke of edinburghlj tea here at windsor castle with the queen and duke of edinburgh. i do not know what you feel like when you get off a flight from la, i do not feel like meeting the prince of wales and have to meet the queen and the next day. it is quite a whirlwind tour. thank you very much indeed. thousands of well wishers are expected in windsor tomorrow, hoping to catch a glimpse of the royal couple. after they're married, they'll travel through the streets in a carriage procession.
8:12 pm
the carriage will leave castle hill, travel through windsor‘s high street, onto kings road and albert road, and then it will proceed up the long walk all the way back to st george's hall, for a lunchtime reception given by the queen. among the guests arriving on the grounds of windsor castle tomorrow will be members of the public. 1200 were selected from around the country, a reward for services to their community. 0ur communities correspondent adina campbell reports. hi, my name's lila. hi, i'm olly. hi, i'm honour. hi, i'm poppy. and we're excited for the royal wedding! and what better way to start this weekend's wedding celebrations than with a tea party? making the most of the sunny weather, royal school here in windsor has been gearing up for the big day for months. some have even been invited. and what are you going to be wearing? we're going to be wearing...

8:14 pm
and when you get that kind of recognition, it was like, wow, 0k, someone's actually believing in what i'm doing. i think that meghan and prince harry are a power couple, absolutely. i mean, i've seen them both speak at events before they were a couple, and meghan was talking about racial inequality and female empowerment and i thought, well, i didn't know who she was, and i thought, you know, that's fantastic. are these for the wedding? yes, this is special for the wedding. and i'm hoping maybe to give a few away on that day to people who i think deserve to be given a handkerchief from... in north london, pamela is also getting ready for this weekend's nuptuals. she runs this creative therapy workshop to improve people's mental health. tomorrow, she'll be taking her son jude as part of the day out, but says she was shocked when she received the invite last month. i believed this might be just an april fools prank, a joke. why would i be invited
