9:00 pm
this is bbc world news today. our top stories. more than 100 people are feared dead after a plane crashed shortly after take—off from the cuban capital, havana. ten people are killed in a secondary school shooting in texas. a 17—year—old student is being held by police. there have been too many of these. texas has seen too many. and with hours to go before the royal wedding, prince harry and his best man go walkabout while his bride—to—be goes to a country hotel with her mother. around 100 people are feared dead in cuba, after a passenger plane crashed on take off in havana. the plane was on an internal flight from the capital
9:01 pm
to the east of the island. these are the latest pictures. three people were pulled alive from the wreckage and are now in a critical condition in hospital. the travel show‘s simon calder told me more about the boeing 737 involved. the 737 is probably the most successful passenger aircraft ever built. it is generally got a very good safety record. this particular version is very old and aircraft terms. the particular plane was bought in 1988 for southwest airlines. it was fun for a number of different airlines since then. and it was actually owned and operated bya it was actually owned and operated by a mexican company based in guadalajara called global. they basically just hired out
9:02 pm
guadalajara called global. they basicallyjust hired out the plane and the crew to cuba on it, the cuban national airline. how does that work? the national airline has had a big problem for decorates. that is the us economic embargo which makes it difficult to access its own aircraft. for example, a large number of russian aircraft in its fleet. therefore, it has, over the years, done quite a lot of chartering in, it is called wet leasing, the aircraft and the group to do its fine. that is a standard arrangement around the world. airlines will do that to fill gaps in their fleet. tell us a little bit about cu ba's aviation in their fleet. tell us a little bit about cuba's aviation security safety history. in terms of aircraft crashes, they have had 18 years of safety but before that, the last
9:03 pm
three years of the 20th century, particularly bleak. they have for accidents including in one week at the end of 1999. speaking to aviation officials on the island, they say we have a challenge to maintain our aircraft they say we have a challenge to maintain ouraircraft in they say we have a challenge to maintain our aircraft in a way that we work what to do because of the co nsta nt u s we work what to do because of the constant us embargo and the fact that a lot of the parts simply are not as available as they might be. it is very much an operation that is kept going through great skill but rather than a large amount of resources . rather than a large amount of resources. this was a domestic flight. it resources. this was a domestic flight. it was going from havana to the east of the country. what kind of person, who would have been on board? on a friday, it would have a mix of maybe families going home for the weekend, some government officials, i am speculating here
9:04 pm
based on internal flights officials, i am speculating here based on internalflights i have taken in cuba. quite possibly some foreign visitors. the airport serves the airport on the eastern part of the airport on the eastern part of the island which is extremely popular. the road network and the rail network in cuba being relatively poor, allots people prefer relatively poor, allots people p refer to relatively poor, allots people prefer to fly. bringing us up—to—date with what happened. to texas, where ten people have been shot dead in another school shooting. it took place at the santa fe high school, south of houston. most of the dead are students. the shooter has been named as a student at the school. a sante fe police chief also said explosive devices were found inside the school and surrounding areas. james cook reports. the calls came in just
9:05 pm
after 8am and again. at santa fe high school. police searching school bags for deadly weapons. for the united states, this is now routine, but no less terrifying for its familiarity. this is my school. this is my daily life. i should not have to feel like that. i was scared to even go back. if there part of you that was like this is not real? no. it was not. why so? it has been happening everywhere. i felt eventually it was going to happen here. the teachers started screaming at us to run. we all took off. iran through someone's yard and jumped the fence. emergency services poured onto school grounds again. confirming what everyone feared, this was another deadly mass shooting. i was focused on the fatalities, and we have approximately 10, still not confirmed,
9:06 pm
and it could be in that range. but i am told the majority are probably students. the president of states appeared before the cameras again. the most and least powerful person on earth. we grieve for the terrible loss of life and send our support and love to everyone affected. by this absolutely horrific attack. and the threat may not be over. police said explosive devices had been found in and near the school. americans are struggling to explain the inexplicable again. in the past hour, the texas governor, greg abbott, has been speaking about the shooting. he said he will seek solutions to stop such a thing happening again. we come together today as we deal with one of the most heinous attacks
9:07 pm
that we have ever seen in the history of texas schools. it is impossible to describe the magnitude of the evil of someone who would attack innocent children in a school. a place of learning where pa rents school. a place of learning where parents should be able to send their children without fear for their child's safety stop it is where it's a very heavy heart that i can confirm that as of this time, there have been ten lies that have been lost and another ten that have been wounded. the texas governor speaking there. the us senatorfor texas, ted cruz, said once again texas had seen the face of evil. the agony, the hell that parents of this community is going through is unimaginable. everyone of us that is apparent that sent our sons or daughters of the school in the
9:08 pm
morning to have this horror meet them. this community is grieving mightily and the entire state of texas, the entire country is grieving the lobbies parents. grieving along with the these students. there have been too many of these. ted cruz speaking earlier. for more on this i've been speaking to my colleague peter bowes, who's in los angeles. it was ten people, including a teacher who have lost their lives. we know the name of the alleged gunman. he is 17 years old, and theirare, gunman. he is 17 years old, and their are, this is new information. of the people who have been described as people of interest. 0ne was at the scene and reacted in a suspicious way and is currently being questioned. someone else who has also been questioned but was not actually at the scene. the new
9:09 pm
information we have learned is the alleged gunman had two guns. he had alleged gunman had two guns. he had a revolver that he did not legally owned himself. he may have obtained from his father. as part of the investigation, we now understand they have been looking at his computer where he had expressed a desire to commit suicide after carrying out this shooting, but we 110w carrying out this shooting, but we now know he did not carry that out and infact now know he did not carry that out and in fact gave himself up to the police. there is a lot of new information as this is happening. the scene around the school is still being investigated. we know there we re being investigated. we know there were other explosive devices that have been planted and people in the area are being warned to stay awake and take extreme care if they see any of these devices, that they could be dangerous. that is very much an active investigation. in terms of the devices, in terms of these vehicles police are interested
9:10 pm
in. can you tell us more about the press conference? yes. we know they have been to his home, and look to his computer. they had been looking inside what they described as a trailer or caravan where these devices may have been made. very quickly managed to piece together parts of these jigsaw, and find out how these devices were made, where they might have got their parts from, and that kind of thing. there isa from, and that kind of thing. there is a lot of work still to do. what it is pointing to is an attack on the school that was certainly premeditated and carefully planned. we are monitoring any more developments on our website. let's turn to the final preparations which are under way at windsor castle guard where prince harry will make it correct mary meghan markle. after much speculation ms markle has asked prince charles to walk her down the aisle. her father is unable to attend the wedding, because of ill health.
9:11 pm
the night before his wedding, and this evening, harry emerged from windsor castle to meet the crowds. he was accompanied by his brother and best man, prince william. some of those behind the railings, and these of course are the most enthusiastic of royal fans, have already been waiting for several days. waiting of course for moments like this. the wait which at least has been made a little easier by the spring weather. windsor has been basking in sunshine and bracing itself for what promises to be the biggest royal event to be staged here in recent times. the choreography is complete. harry and meghan leaving kensington palace for windsor this afternoon, were evidently in complete agreement that the absent father of the bride should be replaced by the father of the groom. it will be prince charles who escorts miss markel to the altar. a statement from kensington palace said miss meghan markle has asked his royal highness to accompany her. down the aisle. this is how it will work.
9:12 pm
miss markle will enter the chapel, and walked the first part of the afternoon do the nave, accompanied by the tenant bridesmaids and pageboys. then at the choir screen at the left of the picture, prince charles willjoin her and escort her through the most historic part of the chapel, to where harry will be waiting for his bride. they will stand just there by the chapel‘s high altar. they will exchange their marriage vows and then the archbishop of canterbury will declare them to be husband and wife. for the bride, that solemn moment of her marriage into the british royalfamily will be witnessed by only one member of her own family, her mother, doria ragland. she was at windsor castle this afternoon to have tea with a queen. there had been speculation
9:13 pm
that she might have walked her daughter to the altar and wedding watchers and windsor, there was some disappointment that she is not. we would like to see her mum walk her down the aisle or perp walk herself down the aisle. if it were me, i would be pleased with charles walking me. it is the father figure, do you know what i'm saying? hey meghan, i love you! you love my son! welcome to the family. if she prefers not to, i think it is wonderful that prince charles is doing it. so now it is just the finishing touches to be put to plans which have been worked on for months. windsor is preparing for crowds on a possibly unprecedented scale. police have launched one of the biggest security operations mounted by the thames valley force. the military who will be operated are in barracks getting ready. these are the household
9:14 pm
calvary, who will be escorting the new couple on the procession. it is a royal wedding to be celebrated and enjoyed. just one more night on the pavement. try to keep awake. tomorrow is harry and meghan's big day. we will have special coverage, and we will take a look back at harry and meghan's royal romance. this is bbc world news today. the latest headlines. more than 100 people are feared dead in cuba, after a plane crashes on take—off. ten people are dead in a high school shooting in texas, a seventeen year old student is being held by police.
9:15 pm
let's get more now on the royal wedding, final preparations under way in windsor, with just a few hours until the royal couple tie the knot. 0ur royal correspondent daniella relph is there it isa it is a glorious evening. we have been watching the finishing touches and final preparations going ahead for tomorrow putt wedding. particularly the flowers that are going into the chapel and preparing areas outside the chapel. a little earlier, we saw prince harry and prince william go out into the crowd outside the castle in windsor town centre. it was an impromptu walkabout. they had a chance to chat to many of the people who had been camping out here for a number of days on the streets of windsor. these are die—hard loyal fans who are dedicated to the cause. for them there is great excitement that they
9:16 pm
could see both the princes this evening. prince harry, he looked very relaxed. we watched him as he talked, particularly picking out the children in the crowd to talk to. he was handed teddies and gets ahead of his wedding tomorrow. we also heard him say that he was excited about what was going to happen, that he felt relaxed and even talked about going to the pub tonight. he looked in pretty good form ahead of the wedding tomorrow. we also saw this evening, his bride—to—be, meghan markle. she arrived at her hotel, clifton, about 20 minutes or so from windsor. accompanied by her mother, doria ragland. they will spend the night in this hotel, not too far away, and the role of the mother of the bride to call her daughter was back nerves. for doria ragland, it has been quite a three—day sids she arrived. today, that culminated with tea with the queen and duke of edinburgh here at windsor castle.
9:17 pm
she has met all the senior members of the royal family, she has met all the senior members of the royalfamily, pretty much, over the past three days and tomorrow, she will be here at windsor to escort her daughter in the car, into the castle grounds and down here to saint george's chapel. as we now know, when meghan markle enters the chapel with her bridesmaids and page boys, it will be herfather—in—law, the prince of wales who will walk her down the aisle to his son, prince harry. we will have lots of coverage from saturday morning. the world health organisation has warned that the chance of ebola spreading internationally is serious. it says the 9 countries bordering drc are most "at risk". the who revealed it believes 500 people have already potentially come into contact with infected patients. there are now 45 current cases,14 of them are confirmed. imogen foulkes reports from geneva: public health experts arrived. their

there'll be no hesitation, no complacency and no let up in the response. the few days and weeks will be crucial. let's get some sports news now — with azi farni there is another big event. and for both sides, it is a chance of finishing the season with silverware. united were runners—up in the premier league. that matches between the teams have been tight in recent yea rs, between the teams have been tight in recent years, but united boss says lots of goals do not necessarily defined again as entertaining. lots of goals do not necessarily defined again as entertaininglj still defined again as entertaining.” still do not understand this words of entertaining. do you think 6—0 is entertaining? i do not think so. i do not think it is entertaining. i think entertaining is in motion until the end. it is open result

until the end. it is open result until the end. it is everybody on their seats until the end. both the guards nervous and tense with the applicability of the results. that, for me, as a football lover, not as a manager, but as a football lover, for me that is entertaining. the league of champions, faced brentford in the german cup final in berlin on saturday. brentford are hoping to avoid a second straight final defeat while brian are hoping to seal a league and cup double. the last game as major. but there is more to the match then what will happen on the page. as former goalkeeper explains. this is at the moment, one of the most emotional games in terms of foot ball most emotional games in terms of football in the last years. the coach goes to munich after the match, so of course, the way he was
9:22 pm
recruited by munich was not necessarily considered clean, so it was lots of angry words, but now they are in the cup final, so again, i think it is a big favourite. i think frank for, they are so highly motivated, even a little bit angry, and they will try their best to annoy the german. brentford is known to be one of the really hard teams. hard fighting teams, extreme physical, and if they get in the first ten or 15 minutes, they are trying to show they can actually challenge munich, then they might get a bit of a fright. the brentford fans, it would be a fairy tale story. but i think the people in munich would be very angry if it takes a double from them. to win the cup is also expected by munich. that is his big challenge now. for him,
