watching the royal wedding of prince harry and meghan markle. at 12:39 precisely, the couple became husband and wife in a unique and emotional service attended by hundreds of their family, friends and invited guests. meghan markle arrived at the chapel wearing a dress by the british designer clare waight keller, the first female director of the fashion house givenchy. the bride, with her ten bridesmaids and page boys following close behind, was met half way down the aisle by the prince of wales, who accompanied his soon to be daughter—in—law to the altar. both prince harry and meghan‘s mother doria ragland were seen to wipe away a tear as she approached. the couple, named the new duke and duchess of sussex, made their vows to love and cherish each other at a ceremony officiated by the archbishop of canterbury, justin welby. and outside thousands

impassioned sermons which i think people who go to church in this country are not used to seeing put up country are not used to seeing put up but he was passionate, may be went on for longer than originally planned but one of the key moments that came through. and that cello music was beautiful. musicians chosen by the couple, the gospel choir again chosen by the couple, the gospel choiragain and at chosen by the couple, the gospel choir again and at the moment that people may not associate with the royal wedding but that is what the couple wanted. i was here during the service and it was played on a tannoy outside. this is the area outside the chapel. and people, invited members of the public who had been nominated by doing good works in the community were here and people who live and work in windsor and local schoolchildren. and it was like a party atmosphere, people had picked the blankets, they were

speeches from the prince of wales, from prince harry, and from the new bride. she will be giving a speech. the duke of cambridge as well, who's best man, and he will be compared at the reception. it is not due to last very long. at the briefing we had a couple of weeks ago it was suggested it may be over by half past three, which will give time for the 200 guest who are invited to the evening dinner, hosted by the prince of wales, to have time to relax, to get changed, and get ready for the evening. it is not long. only a couple of hours at best. and that includes all the speeches, the cutting of the cake. it is quite a swift operation. it is almost like they want to move onto evening do. 7500 items of food have been prepared by a team of 25 chefs. and we've been showing those pictures over the last couple of days of the baker making the cake in the kitchens of buckingham palace. she

and bring colour so all quite and light green. that foliage is hornbeam and folk and it has been gathered from windsor great park. and they have flowers, roses and white clearly so very fresh and springlike and the bouquet that the duchess of sussex as we must now call her was carrying held forget—me—not flowers, the favourite flower of diana, princess of wales. and it was quite small and simple, a lovely touch. and with the page boys and the bridesmaids, very brave of them to have so many all aged seven under. but they behaved impeccably. that wonderful photo going round on social media of one of the little boys just social media of one of the little boysjust grinning social media of one of the little boys just grinning and gasping as you could see him holding the end of that train, incredibly sweet. that

is sure to be in all the newspapers tomorrow. we must also mention the duke of edinburgh because we had a formal announcement during which to clarify that he would be here today because this is a man not many weeks away from turning 97 and recently had a hip replacement and he was walking remarkably well. there was concern, it he had his operation at the beginning of a roll and experts said at the time normally with a hip replacement it takes about six weeks to get back and even then you would be expected to have some kind of walking stick so bearing in mind thatis walking stick so bearing in mind that is almost 97, the fact that he is walking unaided just shows he has had a very speedy recovery. we have not seen anything of him apart from one photograph at the royal windsor

2:32 pm
forward... the couple exchanged vows during the service, which was carried out by the archbishop of canterbury. thankfully, best man, the duke of cambridge, didn't forget the rings. meghan‘s is made from welsh gold, while harry's is platinum. some showbiz royalty were in attendance, from 0phrah winfrey, idris elba, and the beckhams, to eltonjohn, serena williams, and george and amal clooney. meghan markle will now be known as the duchess of sussex, the title is one of the big indicators of the transition from her life this morning as an american actress to british high society. a woman who knows about that transition is duly montague. —— julie montagu,
2:33 pm
an american who married the earl of sandwich‘s son, and is now known as viscountess hinchinbooke. we are opposites, i have lived in america for 20 years and you are an american that has lived in the uk for 20 years. a pretty good union of the old and new worlds. everyone in america must be celebrating right now because it was a very african american centric ceremony, a black preacher from american centric ceremony, a black preacherfrom chicago, the gospel choir, a black chaplain for the queen and a young black cello player. and for me it reminds me a bit of when barack 0bama was did, the first iraq american president and now we have the first american mixed—race princess, it is extraordinary. something else that is extraordinary is the cake we talked about the dress a little bit
2:34 pm
but we just have picked it now i think this is breaking news and there you can see it. we saw it being made earlier in the programme and now we are seeing it and that is also unconventional as the wedding cake. all the separate parts on a different error still and we know that it different error still and we know thatitis different error still and we know that it is not a traditional fruitcake which is what the royal family has always had. this is a lemon cake and elderflower as well. and also that pne theme. —— peony. it looks delicious. and it is not traditional either. it is what she is. it is fantastic and i'm happy she did not go with the fruitcake. i'm nota she did not go with the fruitcake. i'm not a big fan of fruitcake. i
2:35 pm
hope we get some out here. let me ask, what was the process like, being an american as you enter into this traditional aristocratic whitish family, you have done that, what does she have to look forward to? well we thought today, she has to? well we thought today, she has to look forward to all the wonderful royal traditions but definitely she's breaking the mould and we had that today with the ceremony itself. i think we'll see a lot her americanism coming through till filtrate the royal family. i married into this aristocratic families. and now we have, we'rejust like eve ryo ne now we have, we'rejust like everyone else and my husband takes the kids to school and make supper for them and i kind of feel the aristocrats have been leading the way and now we have meghan markle infiltrating into the royal family
2:36 pm
with her american enthusiasm. and i could see harry taking their kids to school and i find it could see harry taking their kids to school and ifind it refreshing could see harry taking their kids to school and i find it refreshing and very normal. you have suggested it is important for her to learn the history of the family. absolutely, for me the earl of sandwich dates back to the 1600 but she has the house of windsor and beyond. she has to ta ke house of windsor and beyond. she has to take some time to understand all those paintings on the wall, all the furniture that is older than the country she has come from and it is wonderful as an american to learn about art history because our history is so short compared to the english history. i eat it up every timei english history. i eat it up every time i want to learn something new. i want to ask about the ship michael curry coming he seems to be the star of this wedding, a lot of talk about him on social media and really he was the high point of the meeting of these cultures. the moment we realised he is marrying an american and is very different. and from
2:37 pm
chicago and that is what i grew up with, that was not normal for me to see that. it was a bit different, you could see that on the faces of the people in the congregation. and ina the people in the congregation. and in a royal wedding but again i think fantastic the way that she has brought, really both of them together because this had to be discussed beforehand but brilliant both the american side and the english side and marrying them together but also that african—american ceremony was key to me and! african—american ceremony was key to me and i loved it. and we had a wonderful moment during the address when bishop curry said to young people fell in love and we all showed up on the whole congregation had a smile on theirface, very sweet moment that injected a bit of levity into this very traditional ceremony as well. let's get a bit of reaction from the united states now — where this royal wedding has
2:38 pm
unsurprisingly generated huge interest given the duchess of sussex is from los angeles — which is where james cook is for us. the wedding is over already and the sun has not yet risen in california but nonetheless this bar is pretty packed with enthusiastic royal watchers decked out in various costu mes. watchers decked out in various costu m es. i watchers decked out in various costumes. i think they find it a pretty engrossing ceremony not pleased the sermon from the american preacher michael curry. arguably it is divided this rule, some people we re is divided this rule, some people were laughing as the queen appeared to shift uncomfortably in her seat during that address which owed more to the new world in the old well. but one african american woman in the audience was urging people to be quiet and show some respect and listen. an interesting divide. it certainly proved controversial for top and here with the union flag
2:39 pm
bunting on the pantry, they are now absorbing what they saw. it seems there is a great deal of support here for meghan markle in los angeles. she is a thoroughly modern princess of course in many ways, she's biracial, obviously american, she's biracial, obviously american, she was in and —— and actors, a divorcee in the last time we had a divorcee in the last time we had a divorcee it was wallis simpson and edward viii. it did not end very well, there was a constitutional crisis of course. but times have changed and even now 2a2 years after the americans chucked out the tyrannical british, it seems that the crown still retains the capacity to entrance and surprise. we are all friends now and certainly today. we can join babita sharma now who's among the crowds on the long walk. and still the party atmosphere.
2:40 pm
totally a party atmosphere. it seems to be getting even more festival like as we speak. graham has got the champagne. how is your day going? like as we speak. graham has got the champagne. how is your day going7m has been amazing, totally amazing. i totally loved it. and you live across the road. just bear so it is an amazing atmosphere, everyone having a fantastic time and so beautiful. and to have windsor on the map in this way, it is a small place. it is but amazing that so many people have come and having an amazing time. what is the plan now? drink some more, another barbecue, enjoy the atmosphere. and the highlight of the ceremony? the preacher was good and i think the atmosphere, everyone coming together like this has been really good.
2:41 pm
thank you very much. lots of international people and also local residents. you are also from down the road. how was it for you? very good. what was the highlight? the carriage ride. that was wonderful to get back glimpse of her, it felt so close. how do you think that windsor has coped with having the world's attention on it? i think the police have done a really good job, i live next door to the barracks and i've seen them coming in and out. next door to the barracks and i've seen them coming in and outm next door to the barracks and i've seen them coming in and out. it has been good. as many viewers have been following this on bbc news, it is not just been for the following this on bbc news, it is notjust been for the last following this on bbc news, it is not just been for the last few weeks but quite a few months of preparation. really a lot, but the town has done well i think. and what

where thousands of people gathered to watch the guests arrive for the spectacular ceremony. celebrity friends, family and invited guests were among the 600 people in the chapel — while thousands of members of the public were invited into the castle grounds. but you didn't need an invitation to enjoy the party, which has spilled out onto the streets of windsor. and i'm on the long walk where many more well—wishers have been joining in the celebrations. those crowds had the amazing experience of seeing the royal procession pass between them as the couple left the castle. good afternoon and welcome to windsor
3:00 pm
on this glorious spring day. we are inside the castle grounds outside st george's chapel — from where the world has been watching the royal wedding of prince harry and meghan markle. at 12.39 — the couple became husband and wife — in a unique and emotional service attended by hundreds of their family, friends, and invited guests. meghan markle arrived at the chapel wearing a dress by the british designer clare waight keller, the first female director of the fashion house givenchy. the bride — with her ten bridesmaids and page boys following close behind — was met halfway down the aisle by the prince of wales, who accompanied his soon to be daughter—in—law to the altar. both prince harry and meghan's mother doria ragland were seen to wipe away a tear as she approached.
3:01 pm
the couple — named the new duke and duchess of sussex — made their vows to love and cherish each other — at a ceremony officiated by the archbishop of canterbury, justin welby. and outside thousands of well—wishers gathered to watch the newly married couple's procession through the grounds of the castle. and out into the town of windsor in cell. the crowds are still very large here outside the castle and we will bring you all the highlights of the day. we'll speak to people on long walk and the town's high street, and we'll find out how the wedding was watched at celebrations in the uk and around the world. but first — our correspondent sophie long on the moment a modern marriage was made — here at the altar of st george's chapel. the duke and duchess of sussex.

royal borough of windsor has calculated that the crowds were slightly bigger than they had been anticipating so they are saying more than 100,000 people came out on the streets of this town today to see the carriage procession, ostensibly, that was the key element of the day that was the key element of the day that people were able to see. this is the scene outside the castle where we are. down at long beautiful walk that leads away from the castle, we will be that later, more than 100,000 people have turned out. helped by this gorgeous weather we have been having today. we know that the railway companies here have been putting out safety announcements in the last hour, saying to people, essentially, please don't all feel the need to leave windsor at once. they are encouraging people to stagger their journey because they are encouraging people to stagger theirjourney because the two railway stations here in windsor

are bursting and they are really trying to stagger people leaving the town on safety grounds. they are making lots of safety announcements about that. and even a good turnout than had been anticipated. that is what they came to see, that beautiful carriage possession that went through the town and back up the long walk and up to the castle for the first of two receptions going on here. 0ur royal correspondent sarah campbell joins me now. she was up very early and has been watching all the day's events. the first of the receptions is ongoing. we have heard a little, as far as we can gauge this afternoon, from someone who was absent, the bride's father. the main way of finding out
3:10 pm
what the father of the bride has been thinking is through the us gossip website tmz who have a good contact with the father. he is reported as saying, my baby looks beautiful and very happy and i wish i were there wishing them all my love and happiness. we found out he wouldn't be here because of health problems, doctors advertised him that it wouldn't be wise to come over and attend the wedding. and thatis over and attend the wedding. and that is why we saw the prince of wales walking his daughter—in—law, now, a little way down the aisle and it was very touching watching her mother look on. quite an emotional moment. the first part, walking down on her own, a first for a royal bride. and halfway down, with him carrying on to the end. harry

it all before and i think, if people liked it, if it made people tune into his message, if it brought a few more people closer to god, she would have been very happy. probably not the sort of style of sermon she is used to that often, on a sunday, at all saints in windsor great park, but she has been around the commonwealth, she has had pretty much everything. she is seen it all before. there was a moment when i was thinking that this is the moment that prince harry is marrying an american. working around the streets early this morning, seeing the stars & stripes everywhere, we are used to red white and blue bunting but we do not often see american flags everywhere. we sometimes talk about the special relationship, but there was that sends that there were two nation celebrating today. in what ways was a traditional and in what specific ways was it not traditional? here we are in a 1000 year old castle built by william the conqueror and not a lot has changed
3:19 pm
in that regard but on the other hand we have planes flying overhead. it has always been a place of contracts, but in terms of the royal wedding, yes, there were traditional touches, the archbishop of canterbury, the royal family, touches, the archbishop of canterbury, the royalfamily, but also, you had people like bishop michael, the fabulous gospel choir, you had a braid watching herself across the name. —— you hagy bride. then you had an american bride being escorted by the prince of wales, walking across the tombs of charles the first, george iii. it was ancient and modern. for me it worked beautifully, the mix of old world and new world in the ceremony a few hours ago. let's go back to the castle walls and jane hill. thanks. there are still people inside the castle walls, the invited guests thinning out, but people milling around, enjoying the sunshine. perhaps savouring the fact that they were here on this very

3:27 pm
the gospel choir singing stand by me, a song which has its roots in the civil rights movement, though a love song. it was a powerful blend of the traditional pageantry and heraldry, at the oldest inhabited castle in the world but alongside that the different tradition of the african american culture. for me, as a black british person, it felt as though meghan was sending a strong message that you can be proud of your tradition and still have a different heritage and be excited about both those things. it represents a difference for many people. people have felt a tension between their heritage and what is seen as real britishness. it's a lot for one person to change that
3:28 pm
conflict. one person can't change the cultural atmosphere but the royalfamily is the cultural atmosphere but the royal family is about identity and symbolism. for many people they speak to their very britishness. for many people these are things that are very difficult to break down into tangible ideas. there are senses of identity and belonging and the symbolism of this wedding sends a powerful signal. for many young people growing up, of mixed race or blackberry at age, it will help them form their own identity and give them a sense that these things aren't mutually exclusive. you can have heritage that is not white british but enter into these traditions. they have a role model ofa traditions. they have a role model of a black woman who has married into the royal family. of a black woman who has married into the royalfamily. that of a black woman who has married into the royal family. that is quite revolutionary. it is quite revolutionary. it is quite revolutionary. it is notjust that she has black heritage. what's
3:29 pm
different is that she owns her heritage. she defines as a biracial and she is close to her mother and has talked about the experience of someone with african—american heritage. it is owning it and speaking articulately about it that represents a real change. it seems that harry and the whole royal family to some extent have embraced that. i lived in the states before coming over here and i was reading some american coverage of this wedding and some commentators were speculating on how races has different characteristics in the uk to in the us. we talk about it a lot in the us, it is a very big conversation when we hear of the shooting of a black person by a policeman, for example. but here, it is perhaps only by being here and what she is today that it will precipitate that conversation? my

book is about the deep problems of racism in this country but they are very difficult to talk about. we haven't had a civil rights movement in this country and it is difficult to have those conversations. many people in britain would prefer not to see race and would like it all to go away. you can't solve a problem by pretending it isn't there. it's no coincidence that the person bringing this into the royalfamily is an american. perhaps the british royalfamily is an american. perhaps the british royal family would feel pressure to keep the tradition of sweeping it under the carpet. i find keep the tradition of sweeping it under the carpet. ifind it keep the tradition of sweeping it under the carpet. i find it very refreshing that she has not felt the need to hide from this. i hope she will continue to do that. a very confident american. watching her today, she was calm and poised and smiling throughout. not just today, she was calm and poised and smiling throughout. notjust her african—american heritage, her black heritage, it's her american heritage that we saw today. and also her feminism. it was a shame that her father wasn't there but i felt she
3:31 pm
was putting a feminist mark on this wedding, walking in a loan. it was clear that she had chosen much of the service herself. she had chosen her vows, she wasn't going to about. she's not scared to raise her political ideology and her views about equality. it shouldn't be a big deal but it represents another big deal but it represents another big break with tradition. we haven't had so close to the throne somebody who self describes as a feminist before. is she going to be taken to the hearts of the british public because she represents a challenge in some ways. i think overwhelmingly she is. there is so much good feeling towards her here. putting her heritage aside, as a woman who has had her own career and being successful, she is quite beautiful and glamorous. there is no denying they have this chemistry. i think
3:32 pm
they have this chemistry. i think the british people are warm and open to things that represent something new and i think that it is going to be difficult for people to embrace these conversations because it's not what we are used to in britain but i think and! what we are used to in britain but i think and i know many others agree that it think and i know many others agree thatitis think and i know many others agree that it is time we do that and if we can do it in a way that is not acrimonious and in a spirit of conversation, it is a positive step. she is somebody that people like. do you think she will carry on her causes. she is not going to be able to be as political as she has been. her criticism for example of donald trump won't wash as a member of the royal family. but will she trump won't wash as a member of the royalfamily. but will she be involved in things that are noncontroversial that people can rally around. it's frustrating for me that she will be focusing on charities that we can all rally around. revista she has been a bit
3:33 pm
more active. i'm curious to see how she navigates it. i would like to see her not be shut down and stop having expressions of her individuality and her own ideas. there are natural restraint as a royal but at the same time this is the only realm of society where we think it is ok for somebody to get married and stop doing the things they used to do. in other realms that would be unacceptable in modern british life. the royalfamily that would be unacceptable in modern british life. the royal family needs to get with the programme. women have things we care about and we have things we care about and we have our own voice and put our own stamp on things and becoming a royal wife shouldn't stop that. it's going to be fascinating to see. thank you very much. there has been so much interest around the world in this particular wedding. meghan markle, now the duchess of sussex is different from the traditional model of royal brides. i'm wondering, down there on the long walk, what are they telling you about meghan? they
3:34 pm
just loved her. it's a big thumbs up from a lot of the people we spoke to. elegance personified is what people are saying about her. i think they just love the way she was smiling and seemed to be enjoying the moment, extremely down—to—earth. she has gone down well with the public here on the long walk. a lot of analysis here poring over the fine details of what we have seen today here in windsor. joining me to do that is katie nicholl, the royal biographer of prince harry and a royal correspondent. what did you make of what you we saw unfold. my goodness, were there surprises! i don't think st george's chapel has ever played host to an african—american archbishop whose address almost stole the show. it was quite a lengthy sermon,
3:35 pm
referencing martin luther king and talking about the power of love. it was big dramatic stuff. there were some bemused looks, i think it's fairand dramatic to some bemused looks, i think it's fair and dramatic to say with the pews with the royal family. meghan and harry seemed to be in their own little world absorbing everything. i loved the fact that he didn't let go of her hand at once, even during the exchanging of rings. they seemed so happy together. it was very much their day. to leave to the strains of the gospel choir, that kiss on the steps. looking back on it, it was how they managed to incorporate those differences. it felt like a royal wedding, we had the pomp and pageantry but with a sprinkling of hollywood stardust. it was an international wedding on a scale we haven't seen before and her family we re haven't seen before and her family were there. just her mother. but her story was reflecting in so many elements of that wedding. and how
3:36 pm
wonderful to see the emotion in doria ragland's face. she really ca ptu red doria ragland's face. she really captured the hearts of people we spoke to. representing the family. everybody seemed to want to her and i. everybody seemed to want to her and i, in particular, was particularly warned by the moment where prince charles grabbed her hand. warned by the moment where prince charles grabbed her handm warned by the moment where prince charles grabbed her hand. it was that sense of inclusion, you are one of us, we will take you by her hand. she is clearly a remarkable matriarch who has raised meghan and beena matriarch who has raised meghan and been a really important part of her life but today will have been an incredibly overwhelming day. she sat in the church with tears streaming down her face and i loved her for that. good for you. the royals don't show their emotion. stiff upper lip. you saw the duchess of cambridge and others looking serious throughout and she was crying tears of happiness throughout and people love
3:37 pm
that. people love that openness about meghan and already, even before she was technically married, she put her own mark on the royal family, doing things differently. a breath of fresh air. i felt the pomp and ceremony was limited. compared to what i was expecting. in terms of the surprises, how much of this is a diversion from the two traditional royal wedding? there was never a question that it was going to divide too much. you have the carriage, the horses, 250 armed forces, here doing what we do best. pomp and pageantry of the ceremony. but they were very clever, they were over their own unique magic and blend of freshness within it. meghan had the clever foresight with the dress that i loved, although it has had a mixed response, the emblems of all the commonwealth countries stitched into
3:38 pm
the vale, a very clever nod to her future vale and tradition but in a dress that was very modern and understated and modern. i think they got the balance just right. what did you make about what we can glean about the modern royal couple going forward ? about the modern royal couple going forward? how much can they change while world attention is on them more than anybody else in the family? i think it will be. they are newlyweds and they have made no secret about the fact that they are going to roll their sleeves up and i've headfirst into work. meghan is 36 and has a clear idea of what she wants to do with her life. you could see the sense of relief in rinse harry's face, he has finally found the right person to share the load with him. i think we are going to see them take on some really quite important roles. they are not going to bea important roles. they are not going to be a future king and queen and they can be an alternative royal couple and it may be pushing the boundaries a little bit like we have
3:39 pm
seen today and perhaps setting the agenda for the future. they will do it respectfully and thoughtfully but they are going to do things differently. thank you so much. katie nicholl. always wonderful to talk to you. we will spend hours poring over the finer detail. the house ofjuve poring over the finer detail. the house of juve or she poring over the finer detail. the house ofjuve or she chosen to make the dress. this was about diversity and inclusivity and it seems to have gone down extremely well with the public here on the long walk. we saw it as well in the ceremony. the gospel singers, the african—american preacher. the young black cellist. there was definitely a point being made by this young couple that they wa nted made by this young couple that they wanted a service that was inclusive. i should point out the crowds, down to the statue of queen victoria on the high street and it is still heaving with people. it is getting
3:40 pm
hotter out here. it is still packed with people and still that very big party atmosphere. 0ne with people and still that very big party atmosphere. one thing that people focus on when talking about meghan markle. she is very well educated. she went to northwestern university, a very good college. she has got that global experience that she carried through as an actress into her work from global charities. 0ne into her work from global charities. one of those charities is one young world to promote work for young people around the world. we are joined by a member of that charity. tell others about her association with that charity? she came to our summit in dublin and that has continued as she has moved on. she has been meant for in young people and speaking about the issues she ca res and speaking about the issues she cares about and being involved in
3:41 pm
mental ship and leadership training that we do. she was thrilled to do it and she wrote about it in her blog the tig. we see her as an actress and now the duchess of sussex but before that she had her university degree in international relations, clearly relevant to the kind of work you were doing. how much of a promoter is she and has she been of the women she has worked with that she has come into contact with that she has come into contact with to the work she has done with you? that has been the issue she wants to talk about. she has worked with women who are former slaves and eritrea, right through to saudi arabian feminist activists, including one who is detained today in saudi arabia. woman and meghan knows? yes, she was photographed with her in 2016. complex
3:42 pm
international issues, really displaying her education and depth of understanding on these issues, not a simplistic approach from meghan markle. she was always very engaged at this complex international affairs. she travelled to other countries for her work? gears, she was in dublin, 0ttawa, with one young world, and rwanda. she is an internationally minded person. she worked in the american embassy in buena is ideas before she was an actress. she is an accomplished, worldly woman. do you think she will be able to carry on the work. i am thinking about this woman in saudi arabia who has been arrested a couple of weeks before women are allowed to drive in saudi arabia. to what extent will she be able to carry on her promotion of those causes now she is married into the british royal family? those causes now she is married into the british royalfamily? the new duchess of sussex has a voice and she wants to use it. she's passionate about the issues
3:43 pm
she cares about, as is the duke of sussex, as he is now called. she has been clear that she wants to keep working on youth leadership. the duke of sussex has been made president of the queen's commonwealth trust, so i think she will carry on with the issues she ca res will carry on with the issues she cares about, albeit in a different capacity. what kind of things can she do and what kind of things can she do and what kind of things can she not do? i cannot answer that but i know she will be clear about the things she cares about and she will not want to step away from the issues about which he is passionate. we're getting two themes emerging, she loves working with women and girls and there is this international ben to what she's doing as well? definitely, a quality is important or in this whole day has been a reflection of those values, both from her and prince harry. thank you forjoining us outside the castle walls and windsor. it is notjust been watching —— the wedding is notjust been watched in the uk. people across the world have been watching the royal wedding, amongst them british forces in afghanistan. prince harry served two tours of the country with the army.
3:44 pm
the bbc‘s secunder kermani has been speaking to some of the british soldiers who are celebrating. iam here i am here at the nato base on the outskirts of kabul. it is home to over 150 british officers and soldiers, and many of them are gathered here watching the ceremony. a lot of work has gone into the decorations. a lot of work has also gone into the food. quite an impressive union jack cake. gone into the food. quite an impressive unionjack cake. the captain has been in charge of the celebrations on the day. where did all the decorations come from?m has all been teamwork. we have had lots of decorations and cakes sent over from lots of decorations and cakes sent overfrom ourfamilies. lots of decorations and cakes sent over from our families. we lots of decorations and cakes sent overfrom ourfamilies. we have also had lots of party shop singing is decorations to help out, and also our cafeteria has made lots of the things you can see. how important is
3:45 pm
it to celebrate a day like today?” think being away from home, on tour forup to nine think being away from home, on tour for up to nine months, it can take its toll on people, so it is great to be able to have a little bit of normality and whilst it might not be the same as being at home with prosecco, we are getting together as an armed forces family to celebrate an armed forces family to celebrate a big british event. no prosecco, no champagne here? unfortunately not. we are totally dry. prince harry served to make voters in the southern province of helmand province. for some there is an added bond that they feel with him. would you say that prince harry is a popular figure you say that prince harry is a popularfigure amongst you say that prince harry is a popular figure amongst the armed forces ? popular figure amongst the armed forces? yes we can relate to him. the guys respect the fact that he fought to get on operations and deployment to afghanistan. the guys can relate to that. and israel with the invictus game as well, is that another factor? obviously his role within the armed forces has died down but he is carried on the work
3:46 pm
he's doing with veterans and people who have been injured. it is important for us to see doing that. it is not just important for us to see doing that. it is notjust british forces here. iamjoined by it is notjust british forces here. i am joined by a captain from the danish army. why did you decide to come along and watch the celebrations today?” come along and watch the celebrations today? i went because as an ex—member of the queen's garden there might have an interest in the monarchy is an institution andi in the monarchy is an institution and i feel great enjoyment watching the royal wedding from the uk because i have lots of family back in london. my dad is from barbados. your father is from barbados, your mother is white danish. meghan markle is also from a mixed—race background. do you see it as significant that meghan markle is coming into the royalfamily significant that meghan markle is coming into the royal family with that heritage? i do, it is a nice symbol that the royal family can represent the current population as well, so it keeps the royalfamily quite relevant for everybody in the british population, so everybody can
3:47 pm
say, that is our king and our queen. it is remarkable and a good thing that she is marrying into the royal family. there are a total of around 650 british troops in afghanistan. the vast majority stationed in bases around kabul, mentoring afghan forces. for many, today will be a day to relax in what can, of course, bea day to relax in what can, of course, be a very tense situation. no champagne and no prosecco. i am guessing that there is champagne and p rosecco guessing that there is champagne and prosecco up in east yorkshire. alison freeman is there. are they still partying? they are. this is normally a wedding venue and it has a superb feel today. it looks glorious. the sun has been beating down, there is prosecco, there are tense over the, people have been enjoying themselves. as if it were a wedding that were rapeseed and not hundreds of miles away. people are playing croquet, there is a marquee had been able to watch the
3:48 pm
events of the day on big screens. we will have a chat to people who have decided to spend the royal wedding day in yorkshire. you are here with some of yourfriends day in yorkshire. you are here with some of your friends who've come to enjoy the day. why did you decide to come? it is the perfect place for a royal wedding, regal, the sun is shining. drinks are flowing and it isa shining. drinks are flowing and it is a nice atmosphere. did you enjoy the ceremony? the dress was lovely. she did look fantastic. amazing. enjoy your drinks. we are going to go further down. see you later? this wonderful marquee has been overflowing with people today. we have are very one over here, it is meghan and harry. they have been enjoying their own day. masks, please, ladies. while here, why celebrate year? we wanted to be with the other people and see it on the big screen so it is just like being
3:49 pm
there, particularly with the crowds. it has been a great day. why do you think people like royal weddings?m is because of the boys, we like the boys. we have watched them grow up and we are happy they have both lovely wives. the same to you. what did you like best about today? lovely wives. the same to you. what did you like best about today7m has all been magnificent. the american, and harry coming together bringing both parts of those nations into theirwedding, it bringing both parts of those nations into their wedding, it was lovely. it is spectacular, fantastic. you chose a quintessentially english place to enjoy it? yes, the grounds are fantastic. i feel like i have been ata are fantastic. i feel like i have been at a royal wedding.” are fantastic. i feel like i have been at a royal wedding. i know those masks are incredibly hard. they were getting hot well they were waiting for us. we will carry on further down. lots of people enjoying the sunshine, despite the wedding having ended earlier today. carol is a local. she lives nearby. why did you choose this venue? it is
3:50 pm
beautiful. it sums up the whole event, the towers is the royalty of the village, and the wedding itself was unbelievable. it was magical. she looked beautiful. he licked so pleased to see her. it was romantic, and the weather, the setting, lovely. you had a little tear in your eye? i had a little weep when she arrived at the altar and he was beaming. thank you. the people will carry on enjoying the sunshine, and the wedding may have been hundreds of miles away, but people here are really in celebratory spirit. back to you. it looks as warm and lovely u p back to you. it looks as warm and lovely up therefore you are in east yorkshire as it does down here in windsor. almost as crowded as well. babita sharma, i want to go back to you on the long work. you should have seen the scene here, it was hysterical. the cruise, the producers, jane hill, me, and
3:51 pm
suddenly i realise, halfway through the ceremony that the tissues were coming out. we were all crying. we were no different on the long war, i am embarrassed to say. we thought we would be hardened but i was alongside lucy hawkins from bbc world news and we were in floods of tea rs world news and we were in floods of tears probably within five seconds of seeing meghan, out of the car, walking into st george's chapel. we we re walking into st george's chapel. we were not the only ones. thousands of people were watching the service on the long work and you could hear the gasps and the tissues coming out as well. there is definitely a festival like atmosphere. —— the long walk. the long walk stretches three miles from the grounds of windsor castle, where you are, to the other side of the royal borough. because the sun is shining, we like to enjoy every minute of it. an international crowd has gathered. i do not know if you
3:52 pm
can pick this up but there are bagpipes in the distance being played. wikis has been entertaining the crowds. we will be speaking to him in around ten minutes or so, so join us for that, because he is getting lots of attention, bagpipes, a good—looking young boy, the crowds are loving him. there is a sense that as long as the sun is still shining on windsor, the people will stay and they will carry on raising their glasses to harry and meghan. we know the royal party is still out partying. they are at the first of two parties they are having. they are tucking into that delicious lemon and elderflower cake. it is possible they are drinking champagne made from the queen's on grip so i reckon they should be partying on the long walk as well. that is the thing to be doing today in this heat. people are talking about this remarkable mix of tradition and new world in the course of that ceremony. you have had it down there
3:53 pm
on the long walk, also by diversity. thanks forjoining us. we will be coming back to you to hear from lucas. that sounds lots of fun. let's look at the dress again. the dress was the star of the show. a wedding dress should steal the show ata wedding, wedding dress should steal the show at a wedding, and meghan's dressed their dad. that simple givenchy dress with the boat neck, the long white sleeves, i suspect lots of brides will be looking at that dress and thinking, maybe that is for me as well. thanks for watching. stay with us. more coming up after this. today has been proved that sometimes the uk weather can do the right thing when it comes to the big occasion. for many of us tomorrow there will be sunny spells but there has been lots of sunshine a rented a back further north, there has been more cloud on offer, and there is a weather front getting
3:54 pm
closer. some will see some rain. at the moment, let's baskin the sunshine. there is a chance of showers in northern ireland and parts of scotland overnight as this weather front gets closer. from ever thickening cloud, patchy rain starts to move on. look cloud and fog moving into east anglia and south—east england were some spots will drop into single figures. for most people, it will be a mild night compared with recent nights. the low cloud in the south—east gradually disappearing on sunday morning. more cloud for northern ireland, northern and western scotland, delivering patchy rain. in scotland the rain mostly to the west and north of glasgow and much of eastern scotland will stay dry with sunny spells. breezy with the weather front close by. more cloud around the north of england and the midlands during the day. might of east anglia and southern england with warm spells
3:55 pm
through the afternoon. where you have the rain it will be cooler than today. the fine weather continues across england and wales on sunday evening. as you were in scotland and northern ireland with some cloud around. a chance of some rain and as we go into mandy, as the weather front peps up a bit, the rain may get heavier. for the west of scotla nd get heavier. for the west of scotland and into the western isles. maybe the west of northern ireland as well. there could be heavy rain. for the rest of scotland, for much of england and wales and eastern parts of northern ireland, it looks like it will be mainly dry with even warmer sunny spells on offer. there isa hint warmer sunny spells on offer. there is a hint that there may be isolated showers and possible thunderstorms across parts of southern england on monday. although with high—pressure close by, most places will be dry next week with one spells like winds, there is a chance of more showers and thunderstorms developing, the greater risk across parts of england and perhaps wales
3:56 pm
as well. prince harry and meghan markle are married at st george's chapel in windsor castle — in a royal wedding watched across the world. the bride arrived at the chapel with ten pageboys and bridesmaids, and wearing a dress by a female british designer. prince charles accompanied meghan markle down the final part of the aisle, while prince harry and her mother looked on. meghan, i give you this ring. as a sign of our marriage. with my body, i honour you. all that i am i give to you. with the queen and duke of edinburgh watching, the married couple made their way to see the thousands waiting outside the castle grounds.
3:57 pm
the newlyweds — now known as the duke and duchess of sussex — toured the streets of windsor in an open carriage. that carriage has now made its way through the town and back to windsor castle for the first of two receptions. celebrity friends, family and invited guests were among the 600 people in the chapel, while thousands of members of the public were invited into the castle grounds. but you don't need an invitation to enjoy this party, which has spilled out onto the streets of windsor. and i'm on the long walk, where thousands of well—wishers have been joining in the celebrations. crowds had the amazing experience of seeing the royal procession pass between them as the couple left the castle. good afternoon and welcome
3:58 pm
to windsor on this glorious spring day, from where the world has been watching the royal wedding of prince harry and meghan markle. iam i am katty kay, inside the castle grounds. windsor high street behind me and the crowds are still out. the party still continuing. meghan markle and prince harry were married in st george's chapel inside the grounds of windsor castle. at 12.39 precisely, the couple became husband and wife in a unique and emotional service attended by hundreds of their family, friends and invited guests. it mixed the old world and the new world. it was a mixture of tradition
3:59 pm
and breaking tradition. there were friends of bills from around the world in attendance. a bishop from chicago gave the address. there was a gospel choir. i don't like cellist. and people here in windsor described it as a ceremony that was one about this couple, representation of what they wanted on their marriage day. it was a symbol of their wish for diversity and inclusion in their wedding ceremony. it was also very romantic exchange between two people very clearly in love, with irmler on all about the power of love. let's take about the power of love. let's take a look at it with our royal correspondent, nicholas witchell. on a day which could scarcely have been better, an american bride came to windsor castle for a very british occasion. in sparkling sunshine, huge crowds lining the long walk, watched and cheered as the motorcade brought meghan markle to her wedding. in the car, meghan and her

mother, doria ragland. within the castle grounds, the groom, harry, and best man william, dressed in the frockcoat uniforms of their former regiment, had walked down to st george's chapel. the queen arrived with the duke of edinburgh. his first formal appearance since his hip replacement operation six weeks ago. at precisely midday, the bride's limousine arrived at the chapel‘s great west door. for the first time, there was a clear sight of the wedding dress, the work of the british designer clare waight keller. there was a tiara, a veil in which had been woven emblems from every commonwealth country, and a long train. at the altar, a groom looking a little anxious, and the bride's mother. what, one wonders, were her emotions today? at the great west door,
4:01 pm
the bride was ready. it was a moment to make a page boy, and many others, gasp. # eternal source of light divine she walked the first part of the procession accompanied by her young attendants, the page boys and bridesmaids, among whom were prince george and princess charlotte. and then, at the halfway point, she was joined by prince charles, taking the role which should have been that of the bride's father, and ecorting her to the high altar, where harry was waiting. thank you, pa, said harry.
4:02 pm
at that moment, it became all about the two people standing at the altar. the archbishop of canterbury led the couple in their marriage vows. i, harry, take you, meghan. i, harry, take you, meghan, to be my wife. to have and to hold. from this day forward from this day forward. for better, for worse. for richer, for poorer. in sickness and in health. to love and to cherish. till death us do part. i, meghan, take you, harry.
4:03 pm
to be my husband. to have and to hold. for richer, for poorer. in sickness, and in health. to love and to cherish. till death us do part. rings were exchanged, and the archbishop of canterbury made the proclamation all those watching had been waiting for. i therefore proclaim that they are husband and wife. a gospel choir sang stand by me. # stand... #byme...#
4:04 pm
and an american preacher talked about love. think about a time when you first fell in love. love is the only way. there's power in love. among the congregation was a sprinkling of celebrities. but, like any wedding, the day belonged to the husband and wife at the centre of it. in this case, the couple who will now be known as their royal highnesses the duke and duchess of sussex. the titles have been bestowed by the queen. the duke escorted his duchess out of the chapel. 0n the steps, they paused for a kiss. and then to their waiting carriage and the procession through the centre of windsor. they were escorted by the lifeguards and the blues and royals, squeezing their way through the narrow streets
4:05 pm
of the centre of town. the crowds were much too much for a town the size of windsor. most people had been directed down to the long walk, where they had been waiting in the sunshine. it was a chance for the public to feel part of the celebrations. and many thousands had responded. packing the long walk to offer their greetings and congratulations to the royal family's newlyweds, harry and meghan, the duke and duchess of sussex. nicholas witchell, bbc news, windsor. sadly, i wasn't actually invited to the wedding, so i can't give you a blow by blow account of what's happening inside the venue the moment, but we have heard that sir eltonjohn perform for all those guests at the reception. well having ca ke guests at the reception. well having cake and champagne, they got to listen to eltonjohn as well. jane has nicholas witchell with us. maybe
4:06 pm
you can tell us more about that? about elton john? let's talk about the reflections of everybody first of all, because we have been watching your pc and the couple always said that they wanted to try to put their stamp on it. what is your assessment of how that went and whether they manage that?” think they did in one very obvious way, and that was the sheer intensity of their feelings for each other which came through very powerfully. it was quite a touchy—feely marriage ceremony, the looks between them. that was one element they wanted perhaps to make public and they succeeded. i think the nature of the service. walking alone for the first part of the procession up the aisle with a ten page boys and bridesmaids, who by the way behaved impeccably. a little bit of nervousness. quite chaotic rehearsals. but on the day, they did
4:07 pm
the business. but then i think with the business. but then i think with the gospel choir, with the preacher, bishop curry, he delivered a powerful address, much longer than there used to in st george's chapel, and he did go on river, but it was very powerful. and you could see that she and particular was appreciating the message. the power of love, and very american evangelical message. it was a blend of traditional british st george's chapel, windsor castle, horse guards cavalry and all that sort of thing, with this transatlantic element that she brought to it. absolutely. and trying to give it that modern twist. and we will have to wait for a future royal wedding to see whether that transmits into future weddings or whether that was particularly because of the transatlantic alliance, as you say. it reflects your personality. harry is very much
4:08 pm
into that approach that she brings to it, and he endorses it and just enjoy it. so, yes, they've now been up enjoy it. so, yes, they've now been up to the reception, which i would imagine many of them, the men in particular, will be settling down to watch the fa cup. then there is the smaller reception tonight with 200 guests. we have heard that sir elton john sign, as had been omitted, possibly. that was the element of the larger reception, 600 people. what happens after that? how much will be be told about the honeymoon? we have to have a break, surely. will be be told about the honeymoon? we have to have a break, surelym they have their way, nothing at all. certainly nothing in advance. they will be determined to aid which the media and go somewhere in complete seclusion. i wouldn't be at all surprised if it isn't somewhere in africa. we know that harry has links in botswana and these places. and, you know, he said that he took
4:09 pm
meghan to africa on one of their first expeditions after they had met, to the african bush. they both love that. whether they will go there, i don't know. we will find that the destination in due course but they will do their utmost to make sure it doesn't come out beforehand. they have an engagement and will not go off immediately. they have their first engagement as the duke and duchess of sussex next tuesday when they attend a garden party that the prince of wales is giving at buckingham palace for his charities. plenty more to talk about. nicholas witchell, thank you. in terms of who has been watching, by definition in windsor, it is the very keen royal watchers who turn out. they had the added bonus of the beautiful weather. it looked picture perfect. warm but not too hot. perfect conditions for standing outside for many hours. and the

royal borough of windsor telling us that they estimate more than 100,000 people crowded onto the streets in this small town today. it has been quite an effort and i think people are getting quite a job getting out of the town. let's go back to noel phillips. he spent a good few days out and about on windsor high street. let's see what people are saying to you about the ceremony. i am just a stroll in the —— stone's throw away on the grass verge. thousands of people watched on the high street. the newly managed duke and duchess left in the old—fashioned way, in horse and carriage. people cheered and when excited. this is what people waited to see. they spent days and hours, waiting since wednesday, waiting for this moment. they were part of history, and what a moment it was. i want to speak to is very excited royal fans. this
4:11 pm
a moment it was. i want to speak to is very excited royalfans. this is even from ghana. jackie, yourfrom jamaica. yourfrom even from ghana. jackie, yourfrom jamaica. your from jamaica as well. today has been truly significant. you have been a part of history. you have been waiting for this moment for a long time. i am very happy to do. iam for a long time. i am very happy to do. i am happy because meghan, her mum isa do. i am happy because meghan, her mum is a black, and her dad is white. i am very happy that the royalfamily did white. i am very happy that the royal family did not say anything about it. they just royal family did not say anything about it. theyjust embraced it. i am very happy about that. that is communication. that is love. what was really significant today was a black reverend preaching to british royalty. just how significant was that? that was very significant. you normally would not see that in this time. it was well that he did a
4:12 pm
brilliant speech and said a lot about the royal family and the couple, and everyone except it is beach, and they thought it was wonderful. at one point, we were discussing what it is like at weddings, for the african and caribbean community, you felt really attached to that wedding, because you felt as though the sermon was speaking directly to you? yes, i did. iwas speaking directly to you? yes, i did. i was really nervous, even before the wedding. i am very happy for harry and meghan and i wish them all the best. ifound it very, very difficult to sleep. i was very excited, as much as she was, to be marrying a prince. a big moment for the commonwealth. people from all over the globe would have been watching. how do you think they are reacting in jamaica right watching. how do you think they are reacting injamaica right now? everybody's watching in jamaica right now, what is going on. i think
4:13 pm
thatis right now, what is going on. i think that is very nice. people in south london are watching it, who normally would be watching the television. i wa nt would be watching the television. i want to say to harry, carry on with the good work, and god bless you. no pressure at all, harry. before we hand back to you, the ladies have a special message for meghan markle and prince harry. take it away. # congratulations # 0n and prince harry. take it away. # congratulations # on your marriage # congratulations # on your marriage #we # congratulations # on your marriage # we are happy for you # congratulations # happy marriage # we are happy for you # congratulations # happy marriage # we are happy for you. it isa we are happy for you. it is a no from me, but come back next year. back to you. you should have been singing along with them. what happened ? have been singing along with them. what happened? i am disappointed.
4:14 pm
that was great. so nice. thank you so much. cheering for meghan and harry on the streets. we are up in the cam of the castle grounds. joining me now is the stylist victoria sullivan and jenny swire, the fashion director at wedding magazine. thank you forjoining me. first of all, the style of the whole thing, the greenery outside the chapel door, it was lovely. it was stunning. the interesting thing is people were talking about meghan having some colour at her wedding, but she did not. she went with white and green and lots of it, but what it really shows was their personalities. really relaxed and informal, but loads of home—grown flowers, real favourites, informal, but loads of home—grown flowers, realfavourites, like peonies, roses, foxgloves, all very, very british. we got some reports that harry had gone out last night
4:15 pm
and picked some flowers from their garden to add to her bouquet. absolutely he did, which adds that personal touch. how lovely to pick some flowers for your future wife's pukki. he chose forget—me—nots, a reference to diana, which is beautiful. not at all stuffy. the wedding dress, we have spoken about this before, it was stunning. simple, classic, but not stuffy. not at all. very much the modern young woman that meghan is. it was represented in that dress. what did you make of what the guests were wearing? any standouts? definitely. the biggest and out, well, let's see, the celebrity side, the show stopper was amal clooney and beautiful stella mccartney. a lovely cumin colour. mustard, delicious. i could not help but think of spaces. the hat was amazing. and i thought
4:16 pm
the mulligan looked beautiful. she was wearing erdem and she looked like she has stepped out of her role in the great gatsby, it was a nod to the 1930s, the style that she wore. were you expecting as many celebrities? i think so, were you expecting as many celebrities? ithink so, ithink were you expecting as many celebrities? i think so, i think we are well. —— i think we all were. meghan, with her background as an actress. there were some of her friends from suits, actors who had been on the television series with earlier had become friends with her. maybe it was the fact that there we re maybe it was the fact that there were no heads of state, maybe it was the fact there were no politicians, but it felt very young. it did, but thatis but it felt very young. it did, but that is what they are all about, they are very young, very relaxed, and they have that informal feel about them which makes everyone loved them. what about the gospel music in the middle of the ceremony. what did that if you? it was
4:17 pm
incredible, i really enjoyed it. talk about the break with tradition. very original and unique. that is harry and meghan all over. in terms of the fashion as well from the royalfamily, i of the fashion as well from the royal family, i loved of the fashion as well from the royalfamily, i loved kate's... her alexander mcqueen. he designed her wedding dress as well. it was a beautiful soft lemon colour. she has just had a baby, the duchess of cambridge, and she is sitting there looking $1 million. honestly, lucky girl. ithink looking $1 million. honestly, lucky girl. i think it comes with hard work, it does not does come with luck. yes, but the yellow she was wearing, there was lots of yellow, and green. we both notice that was definitely a theme. even the queen in her lovely citrus green, and katie spencer were green and her mother, victoria spencer. who else? pippa middleton. she was wearing
4:18 pm
pistachio green. lovely. the bridesmaids and the pageboys, i have four kids, they were impeccably behaved. if i had sent one of my kids down that aisle there would have been a disaster. how did they get them to behave so well?” have been a disaster. how did they get them to behave so well? i am not sure but i would love to know the secret. if the duchess of sussex could hand out tips on how to keep ten kids well—behaved as you walk them down an aisle with thousands of people watching, that was fantastic. incredible and they looked beautiful. they had matching flowers to meghan's. they had circle its and their flowers matched her bouquet. gorgeous. it took away from the stuffi ness of gorgeous. it took away from the stuffiness of it all. yes, not too stuffy. i know it is hard so i appreciate you joining me. for me, the stars of the show were the little boys who carried her train up the aisle. that was not easy. i do
4:19 pm
not know if you manage to see that. her veil was almost as long as the long walk where you are standing. but these little boys managed to carry it perfectly all the way down the aisle. hats off to them. thank you very much. we are only long walk, which is still very busy, hundreds of people milling around enjoying this summer's bay. it is glorious. if you have not got one of these in your hand you're not quite pa rt these in your hand you're not quite part of the festivities. sorry, that looks have eaten. i will hand it over to gordon. it is delightful to be her. the excitement, very early in the morning, it started at about five o'clock when it was quite cold. there was a sense of anticipation, and it built hour after hour and then there was a strange silence of eve ryo ne
4:20 pm
then there was a strange silence of everyone in. thousands of well—wishers who had joined in the celebrations and cheers and applause when the wonderful carriage came carrying the newlyweds all the way down the stretch of the long walk. it was notjust me watching it. charles and ms up former press secretary to the queen, between 1990 and 97. did you enjoy it today? i thought it was marvellous. such a great combination of the ancient traditions of monarchy, with all the pageantry, with all these new elements, the gospel singers, the preacher, the marvellous singing, rate way through. i thought that combination, together with this young couple, this very modern young couple, with their obvious affection and love for each other, and meghan arrived that the altar and prince harry looked more camera immediately, and we saw him coming in nervous at the beginning, rather delightfully. he was nervous at the start. how much do you think things
4:21 pm
have changed for the royal family when you look at weddings gone by, ones that you've seen close—up compared to what you saw today? today was very different, very inclusive. there was lots of emotional empathy, the inclusion of other religions, of the episcopal preacher from other religions, of the episcopal preacherfrom america, the other religions, of the episcopal preacher from america, the am seeing a very good player. —— the imam saying a good prayer. when you look at the beginning of the queen's rain, what a traditional country will work, and 60 years later, the queen still on the throne, admired all around the world, and her family throne, admired all around the world, and herfamily also throne, admired all around the world, and her family also very much admired, and those two princes, very much interested in doing public good, and also that sense of fun, which i think comes from their mother, and their sense of duty is
4:22 pm
very much inherited from their father and grandmother and grandfather. i think that combination is very attractive to young people in this country and all over the world, and very inclusive. as you said, the atmosphere today has been gentle, inclusive, relaxed, very touching. but also very traditional as well. a great combination of being able to be traditional and yet cutting edge at the same time. i think that is a marvellous combination. wonderful to speak to you, charles. thank you for speaking tours today. enjoy the sunshine. we are going tojoin a young man who has been the centre of lots of attention. lucas with your bagpipes. how are you? i am good. you have had as much attention as the bride and groom. particularly on the bride and groom. particularly on the long walk. large crowds have been gathering. why did you decide to bring your bagpipes? because they area
4:23 pm
to bring your bagpipes? because they are a good instrument for busking and they are quite loud. did you earn a pretty penny? a little bit. your friends have come to support you. are you from london, proud of your make? yes. we thought it would only be right if we could have le tiss players out. i will grab my ice cream and it is over to you. -- if —— if we could have lucas play us out. music: "amazing grace".

4:27 pm
# everybody sing! hello again from windsor castle. a very good afternoon. i'm jane hill at st george's chapel. which just a few hours ago was the focus of so many people here in windsor, around the uk and indeed around the world for the beautiful wedding of prince harry and meghan markle. the couple we must now learn to call the duke and duchess of sussex. let's have a look back at the key moments of the day. starting with what many of us consider the most important factor of any wedding — the dress.
4:28 pm
meghan markle arrived on the steps of st george's chapel here in windsor, wearing an elegant, understated dress designed by the british designer clare waight keller of givenchy. she also wore a five—metre veil with a flower from each of the 53 commonwealth countries embroidered onto it. the couple exchanged vows during the service, which was carried out by the archbishop of canterbury. best man was the duke of cambridge and he didn't forget the rings. meghan's is made from welsh gold, while harry's is platinum. we didn't know i huge amount about
4:29 pm
the guest list in advance. but it became apparent, as we watched guests arrive in the beautiful winter sunshine ll... idris elba at the front. 0prah winter sunshine ll... idris elba at the front. oprah winfrey, david beckham and his wife. serena williams, george clooney and amal clooney among those in attendance. inside st george's chapel, we spotted katie mulligan, james corden, james blunt and the first of the day's two receptions, we believe, has concluded around now and we know that eltonjohn sang at that reception as well. also, where we're standing here, more than 2500 members of the public were invited into the grounds of windsor castle. the couple wanted to use their wedding to boost the profile of charities and thanked their supporters for everything they do. those individuals who spent many, many hours out here in the sun,
4:30 pm
encouraged to bring picnics. it was a real party atmosphere here. most of them are on their way out now after quite a long day. our royal correspondent spoke to some of those people who have been invited. it's been unforgettable. it's been absolutely exhilarating. i've gone through a roller—coaster of emotions will stop ijust through a roller—coaster of emotions will stop i just cannot through a roller—coaster of emotions will stop ijust cannot believe... i feel like i'm in a dream. did you get a good view? 0r feel like i'm in a dream. did you get a good view? or did you see? all the royals. it was fabulous seeing the queen. she does so well. and of course william and harry, and then the bride. it was wonderful seeing the little princess trust, princess charlotte and the bridesmaids. —— wonderful seeing the little princess. and george clooney. .. can i ask it was for you? didn't feel like a real privilege to
4:31 pm
be here? i am so honoured. again, it's like being in a dream. all day, it's like being in a dream. all day, it feels like we're walking near. —— we are walking on air. we both overwhelmed. didn't live up to your expectations? it's far exceeded them. i had no idea what it would be like and it hasjust been spectacular. really beautiful, beautiful day. it's been absolutely fantastic. to be invited as a guest, to be here, it has been absolutely brilliant. really honoured and privileged. to be honest, iwasn't expecting anything like that. when something comes through the post like that, it you feel really grateful. it's kind of like, wow, wow. the flowers were amazing. all the flowers to match the uniforms, it was great. is that what you notice when you went in? yes, the smell of the flowers is quite
4:32 pm
powerful when you go in. it is a lovely building inside. was it you've got your invitation today? yes, i was invited by the lord lieutenant... what have you done? for my youth work in the community. i have worked as a member of the youth parliament in south wales for the last few years. i have worked to tackle hate crime and radicalisation. i have also taken pa rt radicalisation. i have also taken part in conferences and things to reduce the stigma are and mental health. and just a handful of the people invited by prince harry and meghan markle to be here in the grounds of windsor castle to see their big day. let's find out how it's been going down in the native states as well. quite a lot of interest, as you would expect. 0ur los angeles correspondent has been
4:33 pm
following all of that. the wedding is over already, and the sun has not yet risen in california, but nonetheless this bar is pretty packed with enthusiastic royal watchers decked out in various costumes. i think they find it a pretty engrossing ceremony, not least the sermon from the american preacher michael curry. it arguably divided this room, some people were laughing as the queen appeared to shift uncomfortably in her seat during an address which owed more to the new world than the old one. but one african american woman in the audience was urging people to be quiet and show some respect and listen. an interesting divide. 0thers others were shouting during it. it certainly proved controversial. and here with the union flag bunting on the palm tree, they are now absorbing what they saw. it seems there is a great deal of support here
4:34 pm
for meghan markle in los angeles. she is a thoroughly modern princess, of course, in many ways — she's biracial, obviously american, she was in actress, a divorcee, she was an actress, a divorcee, and the last time we had a divorcee, it was wallis simpson and edward viii. it did not end too well — there was a constitutional crisis, of course. but times have changed, and even now, 2a2 years after the americans chucked out the tyrannical british, it seems that the crown still retains the capacity to both entrance and surprise. james cook in los angeles. meghan markle of course born in la. went to school there. hence the interest therefore a lot of people in that city. and in other parts of america. people across the world have also been watching the royal wedding.
4:35 pm
amongst them — british forces in afghanistan. prince harry served two tours of the country with the army. 0ur correspondent secunder kermani has been speaking to some of the british soldiers who are celebrating. i am here at the nato base on the outskirts of kabul. it's home to over 150 british officers and soldiers, and many of them are gathered here watching the ceremony. a lot of work has gone into the decorations. a lot of work has also gone into the food. quite an impressive unionjack cake. the captain has been in charge of the celebrations on the day. where did all the decorations come from? it's all been a bit of teamwork. we have had lots of decorations and cakes sent over from our families. we have also had lots of party shops sending decorations to help out, and also our cafeteria has made lots of the things you can see. how important is it to celebrate a day like today?
4:36 pm
i think being away from home, on tour for up to nine months, it can take its toll on people, so it is great to be able to have a little bit of normality and whilst it might not be the same as being at home with prosecco, we are getting together as an armed forces family to celebrate a big british event. no prosecco, no champagne here? unfortunately not. we are totally dry. prince harry served two tours in the southern province of helmand. for some here, there's an added bond that they feel with him. would you say that prince harry is a popularfigure amongst the armed forces? yes, we can relate to him. the guys respect the fact that he fought to get on operations and deployment to afghanistan. the guys can relate to that. and also with the invictus games as well, is that another factor? obviously, his role within the armed forces has died down but he's carried on the work he's
4:37 pm
doing with veterans and people who have been injured. it is important for us to see him doing that. it is notjust british forces here. i am joined by a captain from the danish army. why did you decide to come along and watch the celebrations today? i went because as an ex—member of the queen's guard, i have an interest in the monarchy as an institution and i feel great enjoyment watching the royal wedding from the uk because i have lots of family back in london. my dad is from barbados. that's why i had an interest in this as well. your father is from barbados, your mother is white danish. meghan markle is also from a mixed—race background. do you see it as significant that meghan markle is coming into the royal family with that heritage? actually,i do, it is a nice symbol that the royal family can represent the current population as well, so it keeps the royal family quite relevant for everybody in the british population, so everybody can see,
4:38 pm
that is our king and our queen. it is remarkable and a good thing that she is marrying into the royal family. there are a total of around 650 british troops in afghanistan. the vast majority stationed in bases around kabul, mentoring afghan forces. for many, today will be a day to relax in what can, of course, be a very tense situation. let's return to those watching a little closer to home. we canjoin babita sharma, who's at the long walk. thank you very much. the atmosphere here is still very much festival like. a little less crowds than there were when the couple passed through in the royal procession along the long walk. it is still fairto along the long walk. it is still fair to say that there is still a few thousand year, not only on a long while in the central streets of windsor because the sun is shining. people have picnic laganside,
4:39 pm
champagne, ice cream, prosecco on food and don't feel like they need to go home yet. it is lovely to see a spirit of everyone coming together. international people here. and local residents all milling side by side, including, i think you call yourself comedians... sometimes! we have a lot of happy spirits in us. james is a uk—based comedian. and you both have a podcast covering aspects of the wedding. it's called when meghan met harry. it has thousands of listeners across the world. i want to ask you first, james, what did you think of today? the whole thing was so beautiful. the whole thing was so beautiful. the love surrounding windsor and been broadcast around the world is so intoxicating. harry and meghan are so perfect for each other. we have just been in tears all day
4:40 pm
today. me too. feeling alive and everyone here cheering for us, it was palpable. your podcast has been running for a while now. looking at all the different themes of the wedding, like who's going to be here, you've spoken to royal commentators as well. what is the fascination with harry and meghan? they are unlike any other royal couple that has ever existed. and yes, she's american and yes, she's divorced, but we can't overstate how important it is that she is mixed race. now the castle looks a little bit more like the rest of the world, more like the commonwealth. it looks more like the commonwealth. it looks more like the commonwealth. it looks more like all the places of the world will the flag is planted. it isjust beautiful to see world will the flag is planted. it is just beautiful to see that all of us are part of the story now. do you genuinely feel that? do you think meghan will have that impact? absolutely. she has always been an humanitarian. she has an amazing liberal agenda. harry is the same
4:41 pm
and what he has done with mental health charities is brilliant. meghan has a stage to continue to do the stuff she does. maybe not suits. it was well represented in the congregation! and oprah here, the cheer for congregation! and oprah here, the cheerfor 0prah congregation! and oprah here, the cheer for 0prah was almost bigger than each for the kiss. you are details people, let's talk about the dress. well, the train, the veil lasted weeks, years, amazing, so good. five metres long, we were predicting it would be something kind of subtle. and classic, almost architectural, simple, a little bit audrey hepburn, it was definitely all of those things. i would be getting a cap sleeve or off the shoulder, and it was such a wide
4:42 pm
boat neck that you could see her collar bones, three quarters length sleeve, she just looked perfect, perfect. we had chills, although we still think we are the best dressed! you have got colour on meghan in terms of the fascinated! thank you so much for being with us, the next podcast is what? after the read cap, maybe babies, maybe eugenie and jack. maybe we will take over the commentating for her wedding on the bbc. of course, because the princess is getting married here in windsor as well. we will be back here again. fingers crossed. before i let you 90, fingers crossed. before i let you go, the meeting of america and the uk, we have seen so many americans here in the crowd. loving harry as one of their own, and the brits taking meghan to their heart as well. for you, taking meghan to their heart as well. foryou, representing new taking meghan to their heart as well. for you, representing new york and london, what does it mean for you to see the two countries
4:43 pm
represented in this way? it is really emotional, because our countries are back together. we had a little break up, but now we are once againjoined, it is really special. we have always been cousins, nice to see a family reunion. and like william and kate, no heads of state were attending, politics was firmly aside from that. with that, then, do you think they we re with that, then, do you think they were sending out a different message about the modern royals today? yes, this was a message of love, right? yes, and about the blending of cultures, the recognition and celebration of difference, it was beautiful to see that represented here today. doria ragland. gloria! between the united states! every time they looked at each other, dora and meghan, you could see them giving each other reassuring is. ——
4:44 pm
reassurance. i giving each other reassuring is. —— reassurance . | also giving each other reassuring is. —— reassurance. i also thought available in moment, i don't know what you thought of this, when prince charles, did you see him take her hand. we were sobbing. i really feel like he is so happy that she hasjoined feel like he is so happy that she has joined the family, he feel like he is so happy that she hasjoined the family, he has welcomed her, it was beautiful. that was a beautiful moment, walking in as an independent woman, taking the hand of someone saying, you are part of ourfamily hand of someone saying, you are part of our family now, oh, too much! there is a word being bandied about, inclusivity, diversity, what did you make of that today? it was absolutely everywhere, from the gospel choir to the bishop who was speaking, you could see it in the guest list, just fantastic, because everything was there, it was a celebration of both of the cultures and the world. as we said our
4:45 pm
podcast, it feels more representative of the commonwealth and the rest of the world, it makes it special, different to a normal royal wedding. and it special, different to a normal royalwedding. and britain it special, different to a normal royal wedding. and britain as a diverse place. completely, it really does feel like that, and it was so lovely to see that on screen.” does feel like that, and it was so lovely to see that on screen. i to apologise, i cut you off slightly, but to sum up, the howson givenchy, a surprising choice. —— the house of givenchy. something that we didn't predict? i also was not thinking ralph & russo would be it, i didn't think that was true, sol ralph & russo would be it, i didn't think that was true, so i was glad that she went a different direction. and you were just over there on the other side, some up for me the moment that the couple came past in the carriage. magical. it was like
4:46 pm
something from the princess diaries. it just felt incredible. something from the princess diaries. itjust felt incredible. everyone was screaming and wailing and cheering, it was an eruption of love and celebration, just a beautiful, amazing moment, all of us were there for them, the closest i have ever gotten too, you know, touching an angel, to a celebrity, everything, all at once, it was a little bit of hollywood, a little bit of royalty. ijust want hollywood, a little bit of royalty. i just want to say how wonderful it is that harry has married the most beautiful woman on earth, the rest of us will do all right. you will do all right! thank you so much, both of you. summing up the atmosphere, sheer delight, meghan, and also a word for doria ragland, who stole the hearts of many people here. let's talk to noel phillips, now who's among the crowds on windsor high street.
4:47 pm
there are people on the lawn of windsor castle, usually people are not allowed to be here, but the atmosphere is very happy, people are just sitting down, really soaking up, digest in what they have seen, a piece of history that doesn't come around very often. i have a woman here with a water cooler in a pram, and thisjust here with a water cooler in a pram, and this just gives you a sense of how relaxed people are, how confident people are feeling today. you live on bbc news, having a good time? yeah! as you can imagine, a lot of people feeling hot, the sun shining, it is very hard, and i have got some water to keep me going, to make sure i am composed, and i have got two foreign visitors, welcome all the way from dallas, how are you quys all the way from dallas, how are you guys feeling? yes, amazing, amazing, having so much fun. super excited. this is a big deal in america
4:48 pm
because the duchess of sussex's background, how do you think america is waking up to this news?” background, how do you think america is waking up to this news? i think they are loving it. they are loving it, an american woman is now part of the royal family, she is a great representative. couldn't agree more, the way that she holds herself, the way she represents a country, the way she represents a country, the way that she just walks and talks, she isjust wonderful. with any couple, the wedding day has to be perfect, everything has to go according to plan, what is your verdict on proceedings today? so it was pretty much perfect. some of it was pretty much perfect. some of it was a little unconventional, but other than thatjust was a little unconventional, but other than that just perfect.” think the way that she was true to herself and presented herself through the ceremony, throughout before and after. cheers, that gives you a sense of how excited and
4:49 pm
relaxed people are, how much people are having a jolly good time! was he having a drink there? did i miss that? we are missing the funny there! it has been an awful lot of fun for there! it has been an awful lot of funforan there! it has been an awful lot of fun for an awful lot of people, a huge number in windsor and beyond, great parties in so many places. let's ta ke great parties in so many places. let's take a moment to remind ourselves of some of the key scenes, the key moments of today. # amen, amen # amen, amen # this little light of mine

# everybody sing! # amen...# hello. today has been proof that sometimes the uk weather can do the right thing when it comes to the big occasion, and for many of us tomorrow there will be some warm sunny spells. not all, though, as we will see in a moment. in fact, on the satellite picture you can see while today there has been a lot of sunshine, further north and north—west there has been more cloud on offer, and a weather front getting closer into tomorrow, and some will see some rain. but for the moment let's bask in the sunshine of a glorious start to the weekend. later this evening, there is a chance of catching a shower in northern ireland, across parts of scotland overnight as this weather front to the north—west gets closer. ever thickening cloud, patchy rain starts to move in later in the night.
4:53 pm
also, some misty low cloud, fog patches into parts of east anglia, and south—east england, where some spots will drop into low single figures, but for most of us a mild night compared with recent nights. that misty low cloud towards the south—east gradually disappearing through sunday morning, more cloud for northern ireland, northern and western scotland, delivering patchy rain. in scotland, that rain mostly to the west and north of glasgow, much of eastern scotland will stay dry with further warm sunny spells. breezy, though, with this weather front close by across scotland and northern ireland, northern and too with more cloud for wales in the midlands developing during the day. much of east anglia and southern england with warm sunny spells onto the afternoon, where you have got the rain, it is cooler that what we have seen today. the fine weather continues across england and wales
