let's get more now on the investigation into the shooting in the belgian city of liege. three people were killed, including two female police officers. the gunman was shot dead. it's being treated as a terrorist attack. our europe correspondent damian grammaticas is in liege. hejoins us live. he joins us live. what is the latest? there have been reports in the past couple of hours that have been coming out. police investigators looking at the perpetrator of this attack. reports coming out that he may have been on some sort of a police watchlist for suspected contacts with radical figures. that has not been confirmed publicly. there have been reports quoting police sources. we cannot say that definitively, but what we do understand is that he had been imprisoned. he had been imprisoned for a year or imprisoned. he had been imprisoned fora yearorso, imprisoned. he had been imprisoned for a year or so, where he was
6:51 pm
imprisoned for offences related to drugs, nothing related to radicalism or terrorism but police believe that when he was in prison if was possible that he was radicalised. the events that unfolded here in liege this morning, he appeared to have targeted two policewomen, on the street. he stabbed them and then shot them with their guns, came up the street here to the school where he was then shot dead when he ran out and confronted police outside. that all happened outside the school. we also understand that this man had been in prison, he was on temporary release for two days, released on monday, due to go back to prison tomorrow and that was preparing him for his future release but police appear to have had some suspicions about his contacts. no doubt hear that the police were the targets 7 doubt hear that the police were the targets? certainly. that is what the prosecutors were talking about, because of the way this unfolded.
6:52 pm
the man approached two policewomen from behind on the street, armed with a knife, attack them, unprovoked, he simply came upon them, stabbed them, when they were on the ground, took their guns, shot them dead and the rest of the incident unfolded. i understand we are in the realms of conjecture, but this raises a lot of issues including, of course, where this man might have been radicalised. yes and thatis might have been radicalised. yes and that is certainly what the authorities are focusing on. first of all, i have to say, we have seen it visits here in liege from the belgian prime minister, the interior minister, the king, all of whom expressed their condolences and there is support for the police, particularly and belgian police have targeted multiple times now in the past couple of years. by attackers. radicalised attackers. certainly
6:53 pm
belgian police have felt themselves to be the target. but now, the question is really looking more at the belgian prison service and we know this from before, remember those terror attacks in paris and brussels? attackers there, some of them believed to have been radicalised during their time in prison and contacts radicalised. now those same questions about the influences on people and prisoners inside the belgian penal system and whether they are exposed to radical influences there. that seems to be the suspicion at least in this case. you touched on it there, but tell us more about the wider situation and where this comes in the context of other attacks in belgium. well, what we have seen of course with this spate of attacks, going back a couple of years, 2016, two years ago, march, two years ago, we saw
6:54 pm
the brussels attacks on the airport and the metro system. they were suicide attacks. those came following the paris attacks and it was believed it was an extended sale who aided the paris attackers, some of the planning of that was done in belgium. then when the belgian police and french police moved in to mop up the group, that triggered the brussels attacks, 32 people died there and that was the major attack but since then, we have had this highly elevated terror alert in belgium. several different attacks and attempted attacks on police have taken place in different cities. that had subsided and this one now fits that same pattern, a lone attacker, perhaps someone involved in petty crime, possibly radicalised imprisoned, carrying out an attack, particularly targeting police and authorities and, therefore, part of that same sort of pattern that seems to have emerged in belgium and some

are saying that at the minute, terror threats in belgium seems to be coming from these individuals radicalised, who were belgian citizens, who have grown up and lived here and that this again sits within that sort of spectrum but what we are seeing, the national terror level not elevated because there is no sense that this indicates a wider threat at the minute. thank you, damian. our europe correspondent there in liege. a campaign has been launched to honour conjoined twins who became international entertainment stars in the 1920s and 30s. violet and daisy hilton were born in brighton in 1908 — after being discovered as potential stars, they toured europe and the united states. now an east sussex historian is leading a drive for a plaque at the house where they were born. sara smith reports. this movie made their name. they had
