6:32 pm
so this man here took us all by surprise today — when he announced he was leaving real madrid. zinedine zidane, after three consecutive champions league titles as manager of the spanish side, is stepping down — saying the club "needs a different voice." just five days after his latest european triumph in kiev, zidane told a news conference that "everything changes" and "that's why he took this decision". translation: this club needs to keep winning and for that it needs a
6:33 pm
change. after three years, it needs a different voice, a different work method and that is why i made this decision. because i really love this clu b decision. because i really love this club and also the president, who gave me the chance to come as a player to real madrid. this great club. for that, i player to real madrid. this great club. forthat, iwill player to real madrid. this great club. for that, i will be forever grateful. for that, i will be forever grateful. for more on this, let's bring injuan castro — footballjournalist with marca in madrid. this was a shock announcement. you could see florentino perez saying he didn't want zinedine zidane to go, but there was a sense the club, the job does tire managers out? yes, thatis job does tire managers out? yes, that is for us here in spain is the
6:34 pm
only reason, because zidane is out. he was tired. to be coach of real madrid is tiring for anybody. more for zidane who has achieved the three champions leagues in a row. so that was a tiring job here in madrid. that was the only reason. as you say, florentino perez, the president, was the first one in being surprised by the decision. no one in the club knew that until yesterday and only perez and maybe the captain sergio ramos knew the situation yesterday. no one, journalist, announced the situation before this morning. what next for real madrid, who will take charge do you think? well, we already point out, point to mauricio pochettino, which is the first candidate right now for being coach of real madrid. not because of the last five or six
6:35 pm
hours, because you know perez didn't have the time to choice a new one, but because mauricio pochettino was under the candidates in january but because mauricio pochettino was under the candidates injanuary when zinedine zidane was about to leave real madrid and mauricio pochettino isa real madrid and mauricio pochettino is a coach that is under the view of perez, who will sign the new one. with real madrid, everything revolves around the big name players, what has been the reaction from them? surprising. i mean, they we re from them? surprising. i mean, they were really surprised. some of them in the social media announced that they were really surprised and they feel pity by the exit of zinedine zidane, but a goodbye of zinedine zidane. they were comfortable with this coach. it is not the strict coach. it is a coach who leave the
6:36 pm
players to play. it was a fine coach for players, and they were really sad and now they know they won't have zinedine zidane and they're expecting for a new one. thank you. interesting times ahead. so plenty of speculation over who will be in charge of real madrid next. but we know that, this man here, marco silva is the new everton boss. he replaces sam allardyce, who was sacked at the end of the season, after six months in charge. and remember, silva was sacked by watford in january, with the club blaming it on everton‘s approach for their manager in november. well after the announcement silva spoke to everton tv of course, i know the responsibility to be everton manager. i know what is behind me. i know the big club history as well. and i know what the fa ns history as well. and i know what the fans expect as well. of course, it
6:37 pm
is important for me and it is important as well to feel this confidence in my work. our reporterjuliette ferrrington joins us now. so is this the case that everton have finally got their man. yes, they have been after silva since last autumn. they made that approach to watford. watford weren't having that and they wanted him to stay. everton then appointed sam alla rdyce. stay. everton then appointed sam allardyce. you felt with sam alla rdyce allardyce. you felt with sam allardyce it would be a short—term appointment. so it goes back to silva, who was available now to become everton manager and they continued that chase and that has been resolved with the three—year contract. but it could be costly? yes, because, well, we heard today while everton made the announcement and later watford said that compensation still hadn't been agreed between the two clubs. i have got the details with what they view
6:38 pm
very much still as an illegal approach that was made for silva in the autumn, although he felt, or we felt he wanted ed to come to goodison. the premier league are keen for the clubs to sort it out between themselves before it can go further. but everton have silva on a three—year contract. further. but everton have silva on a three-year contract. what kind of fit do you think he will be at erton. he has not had a lot of experience. no he burst into the premier league with hull city and thejob was to premier league with hull city and the job was to try and keep hull in the job was to try and keep hull in the premier league. he introduced his style of attacking fast thinking play that fans warmed to. but while he had a promising future, there is still an element of caution. he didn't keep hull in the premier league and his short time at watford was quite mixed as well. so he is
6:39 pm
enthusiastic and he is happy to work with a director of football. it looks like a good summer for everton, a new manager, new chief executive, new director of football, sam alla rdyce left executive, new director of football, sam allardyce left them with a good platform to build on. maybe some happy fans at last. yes. thank you. and now to the hat—trick of the managerial stories today — as frank lampard says he's "excited and nervous" to start as derby county manager after joining the club on a three—year deal. he's taking on his first managerial role and was one of 20 applicants for the job. the former chelsea and england midfielder said he spent "considerable time" discussing the role. the bbc‘s nataliejackson spoke to frank lampard after the announcement. i'm excited, i can't wait to get to work. having had the career i had, i was always determined to win, i worked hard and it is still in me.
6:40 pm
that is the thing when you finish playing, you can't take away that desire and competitive nature and so i'm delighted to be here. i'm flattered to be at a club the size of derby with the history and the fan base. i'm ready to work. why derby? having spoken to mel morris and the board here and see, i was aware of derby, as a club, i grew up in the golden era of the 70s here. my in the golden era of the 70s here. my dad played against these teams. i knew about the club. having spoken to the board, it has been very quick. but it was not sold to me. it sold itself as a club. the stadium, the training ground, the players we re the training ground, the players were unlucky in the play—offs. the clu b were unlucky in the play—offs. the club is such a great opportunity for
6:41 pm
me. have you had messages from other managers, fromjose me. have you had messages from other managers, from jose or the big names to wish you well? it is only freshly announced. jose mourinho has sent me announced. jose mourinho has sent me a message. i had a good relationship with every manager i played under. m essa g es of with every manager i played under. messages of support. very brief, but a nice message. well covering this story for us is the bbc‘s simon stone — joins us now. interesting appointment this simon, a big name — but a lack of managerial experience. it isa it is a big job. derby have been knocking on the door of premier league. they have gone down the route of experienced managers and that's not worked out, maybe giving it to that's not worked out, maybe giving ittoa that's not worked out, maybe giving it to a rookie might work and be a master stroke and it will remains to be seen, whether lampard's name opens the door to better players,
6:42 pm
bigger name players or more success than they have had in the past. he was a very intelligent player, do you think he has that mind to move toa you think he has that mind to move to a coach? i think he is an intelligent person and he knows the game. and he doesn'tjust know about playing the game, which we are all aware of. he understands the mechanics of game and the politics of game and he is wise enough to deal with that. i think that is a a prerequisite almost. you have got a lot of things to deal with and media scrutiny and i think he will be able to handle that. so i think he will succeed makes derby and their chairman think he will succeed. we know thatjohn terry is stepping away from aston villa. lampard was
6:43 pm
asked about that at his press conference. he didn't rule it out. that is interesting. the other thing isjody morris, the chelsea under—21 coach, he is touted as somebody who will go in as lampard's assistants. if that happens, it will be interesting to see whether the young lads who people have complained have come through at chelsea, but never given a chance, whether lampard goes back to his old club to get some to reinforce derby's fight for promotion. thank you very much. thank you very much. chelsea's russian billionaire owner roman abramovich has put the club's stadium plans on hold, after delays to the renewal of his uk visa. the bbc understands abramovich does not want to invest £1 billion pounds in an infrastructure project in a country where he's not allowed to work. our sports news correspodent richard conway has more. plans for a new stadium are on hold.
6:44 pm
it was thought that stamford bridge would be preplaced by a new stadium, the same architect that designed the beijing bird's nest stadium. but thatis beijing bird's nest stadium. but that is on hold, because roman abramovich has made a personal decision we understand to halt the plans, because of the delays in renewing his visa. there has been difficulties in that process. it is all in the context of heightened diplomatic tensions between london and moscow after the poisoning of the former russian spy who was poisoned in salisbury. in light of that, roman abramovich, a close ally of vladimir putin the russian president, has had difficulties renewing his visa. he is now an israeli citizen, so he can come to visit, but not to work. in term of chelsea, and the team, his
6:45 pm
investment and his commitment to back nag team, remains —— backing that team remains unchanged. it looks as if stamford bridge will not be re—developed any time soon. also coming up in the programme... with 50 days to go until the start of the hockey world cup, we speak to england forward sophie bray. and i'm at headingley where england's cricketers try and remember how to win. let's head to paris now, where kyle edmund, the british number one, has made it through to the third round of the french open for the second successive year. he beat hungary's marton fucsovics in what turned out to be an up and down four sets. nick parrott was watching. fans used to be desperate for an autograph, now they want to show they were there and keen to chart they were there and keen to chart the progress of kyle edmund. he was rapid in winning his first match and
6:46 pm
got off to a blistering start against martin fucsovics. he took the first set in half an hour. but the first set in half an hour. but the hungarian was a different player in the second set, showing deft touches on the way to battering edmund into submission. there was something wrong with edmund. the finger was fixed too late to save the set. but in less than an hour and a quarter he had powered his way through. but improving on that will be difficult against his next opponent, fabio fognini. well let's get more on this and the rest of the day's action, from our tennis correspondent russell fuller in paris. not at his best edmund, but that is tennis, a bit up and down. he will
6:47 pm
need to play more consistently against fabio fognini in the third round. a man who can devastatingly good on clay. cameron norrie is out, but he pushed lucas pouille all the way. after norrie paid tribute to his grandmother, whose funeral took place yesterday. he said he hopes he has made her proud. heather watson was up against ellise mertens and lost in straight sets. serving was the problem. ten times she tried to hold serve and only gies she succeeded —— twice she succeeded. england are waiting to name their team for the second test against pakistan, until they know the results of a hamstring scan on ben stokes.
6:48 pm
the all—rounder didn't do any bowling orfielding in today's practice session at headingley. england go into the game one nil down in the two match series and having not won a test since the end of last summer. patrick gearey reports. these are the moments when test crickets repetitive disciplines are forged. repeated until they‘ re second nature. but england have developed an unwanted knack — losing. joe root has lost six tests in eight. everything about and around his team is questioned. his star a all—rounder ben stokes may not be fit. i think it helps getting straight back into it. not having much time to think about things. it was clear where we needed to improve from last week. we have had good preparation. the guys have worked ha rd preparation. the guys have worked hard and now it is just going out and proving a point. putting in a strong performance as a group. and showing some real pride in the

badge. beautifully delivery. early summer was a safe space. the last time england lost the first test in a home season was in 1995. there we re a home season was in 1995. there were echoed of that at lord's. but this pakistan team are unlikely tormentors, seventh in the world and unable to play in their own country. they expect the same result. very important win against england, we will try our best to win the series. they're a good team. we are changing one 01’ they're a good team. we are changing one or two. we have no problem. the cricket will take place in the shadow of construction work and nd both teams are in different plays. pakistan have something to build on, but england for some time have been making running repairs. let's take a quick look at some of the other sport stories
6:50 pm
making the news today. widnes vikings have sacked head coach denis betts, after eight years with the club. the vikings are currently bottom of super league with three wins from 12 games this season. riyad mahrez is expected to join manchester city from leicester by the end of the week. city walked away from a deal for mahrez in january because of the asking price — he's going to cost them around 60 million pounds. while pep guardiola's side are also expected to bring in the napoli midfielder georgeinho. he's a 26—year—old italian international, and he's expected to cost city around £112 million. this day two weeks, after all the months and indeed years of build up, the world cup in russia will get underway. and, here on sportsday, we'll be taking an in depth look at some of the issues facing the teams and nations competing there.
