arrangement and the current rate of two victory from the government, you're looking early 20 205 —— rate of trajectory. when you're talking about for and beyond, people start to think, is it actually ever going to think, is it actually ever going to happen? are we going to see the 5ort to happen? are we going to see the sort of independent policymaking week voted for? and so i think when you see now theresa week voted for? and so i think when you see now there5a may in this po5ition, you see now there5a may in this position, i don't interview to see a lot ——i position, i don't interview to see a lot —— i think you're going to see a lot —— i think you're going to see a lot more drama. brexiteer5 are furiou5. they 5en5ed lot more drama. brexiteer5 are furiou5. they sensed that there is no real grip on what is weinan, there is no real and date. it seems to be kicking the can down the rep. it seems to be a lack of leadership from there5a may who do not even campaigned to leave the european union. and you say all of that and yet, the express is a brexit back on track. intere5tingly, yet, the express is a brexit back on track. interestingly, the prime mini5ter track. interestingly, the prime minister has track. interestingly, the prime mini5ter ha5ju5t track. interestingly, the prime minister has just arrived in quebec the g7 summit which starts tomorrow.

there are are some line5 coming out of the trip becau5e there are are some line5 coming out of the trip because she's got a pack of the trip because she's got a pack of journalists having of the trip because she's got a pack ofjournali5t5 having with her and we have earned a little bit of what 5he‘5... we have earned a little bit of what she's. .. which we have earned a little bit of what she's... which must we have earned a little bit of what she's. .. which must be great for her. must be great fun for her to 5top 5he her. must be great fun for her to 5top she is saying must be great fun for her. 5he she is saying we don't want to use the back5top arrangement. she is saying we don't want to use the backstop arrangement. the reason it exists as britain has signed up toa tim it exists as britain has signed up to a tim agreed to some commitment to a tim agreed to some commitment to avoid their being a hard border between northern ireland and the island of ireland. that must be avoided which is why the eu and britain signed up to this in december. if you cannot find a way to resolve this, we're going to default to a where northern ireland is in the customs union. therefore by extension, written and the rest of the uk will also be in the
10:47 pm
customs union. it is not the eu's fault britain has not been able to come up with a workable, viable, plausible, credible system to do that. and that is why we have this backstop in play. is brexit back on track? the expenses ever hopeful but it seems to me that perhaps the conversation that the government is having amongst itself, the cabinet is having with itself, perhaps that is having with itself, perhaps that is back on track. but it doesn't seem is back on track. but it doesn't seem to me like they've got any grip oi'i seem to me like they've got any grip on brexit and the thing that i keep saying about this. i don't really ca re saying about this. i don't really care if the conservatives fall apart. i don't appreciate them fully —— falling apart on our time. apart. i don't appreciate them fully -- falling apart on our time. it seems they had come to a collective view but no sooner than that had been the agreed line we get the story on the front pages of the telegraph of a recorded conversation
10:48 pm
by borisjohnson. telegraph of a recorded conversation by boris johnson. i think boris johnson is by boris johnson. i think boris johnson is speaking for millions and millions of brexiteers. they may not have attended for his comments to be made public but yes, front page of the telegraph reports saying, we can say in the customs union and to the larger extent in the single market u nless larger extent in the single market unless the government had the guts to policy. seemingly not believing the brexit he campaigned for is going to be delivered, he also the treasury the heart of remain. the fa ct of treasury the heart of remain. the fact of the matter is, people around the cabinet table did campaign and you believe in very different things when it comes to brexit. that's just a fact. some campaigned very passionately. theresa may kind of sat in the middle. the fact is, this was always going to happen because you've not got the person that actually believes in this. it would have made much more sense to actually have people around the table he blew all believe in it. at
10:49 pm
least you would have got something coherent. not different... the friction we have seen from the likes of borisjohnson, friction we have seen from the likes of boris johnson, michael gove friction we have seen from the likes of borisjohnson, michael gove and lots of other brexiteers is going to continue. by the david davis again was another example. why should remainers not be around a table? 48% of the country voted to remain stuck with this is 48% of the country voted to remain. this is something that does feed have got a hold of. they need to avoid a hard border between northern ireland and the republic of ireland. he described it as allowing the dog, which is an extra ordinary way for
10:50 pm
british foreign minister to describe ireland. he also warns in this there could be brexit precipitating a meltdown and we just have to be comparing to do with a meltdown. you know, not great things for the foreign secretary... strong language. but listen. the reason this is being prolonged is there is a section of levers in the cabinet. there is a fundamentalist wing of people who voted leaf who do not wa nt people who voted leaf who do not want anything other than the exact vision of birth they had in mind. they can't have it! there is no constituency for it in the parliament, not in the public. the longer they keep going with this fight, the longer they are prolonging the suffering of uncertainty... this is a bit silly. i don't know what you're getting attacked from. 57%, the last time i
10:51 pm
saw fact, want to stay in the customs union. i'm going to move onto another story. let's move down to the front page of the telegraph. who would have thought it? we know donald trump doesn't take anything from anyone. he's a strong leader. certainly it's not a good relationship tween donald trump and theresa may, that's plain to see. it's a great opportunity for the country and the special relationship and everything else. it is very clear there are different personalities. trump is a very radical and i think boris may have made mention of the fact, imagine if we had trouble negotiating. —— truck negotiating. radical approach from trump getting results. a stark
10:52 pm
difference from the government on brexit at times. and yet... she rest to see him. she was the first to go see trump after he was elected. he took umbrage with her correcting him. this is probably the bit that he saw as being a bit like a school mistress, which he correctly —— when she correctly told him he should not have retweeted anti—muslim panic mongering from the far right extremist britain first. perhaps when it's started to sour somewhat. he is still coming, isn't he goes like we have not heard he is not. i wa nt like we have not heard he is not. i want to rush through. the story to date with house of fraser and also pound world. lots of bad news. obviously your heart goes out to these people just tried to make a living, feed the
10:53 pm
families. 31 uk stores for house of fraser basin we are going to go down. what i find very interesting about this... one advantage with the internet and everything being so successful, they got that human contact and that opportunity of customer relations. i don't think they are harnessing at the moment. we go on these shops, you not doing customer service. we go on these shops, you not doing customer service. “— we go on these shops, you not doing customer service. —— when you go in the shops but you're not getting customer service. you're not giving people a big enough incentive. and if they don't radically change and focus a lot more delivering that effective customer service, people just are going to continue go to the internet because his more convenient and they can put their feet up and have a coffee and order online. and i will be debated increasingly. all the aspects of it... let's look at the aspects of it... let's look at the front page of the daily mirror. that's the sadness, isn't it? these
10:54 pm
are huge stores, house of fraser department stores, aren't they? absolutely. and it's a lot ofjobs but it's also the nation of shoppers, as we were disparagingly called. the high street is the heart of every city and every town. and are you look like places like sunderland, and it's been completely decimated. it is a ghost town. it does feel like our high streets up and down the country are in crisis and down the country are in crisis and that's says so much about communities in crisis as well. it's notjust the jobs lost communities in crisis as well. it's not just the jobs lost them although thatis not just the jobs lost them although that is bad enough. it goes much deeper. we just got time to discuss the front page of the metro. police probe the grenfell firefighters. we're going to be quite brief about this but this is quite a turnaround. unbelievable. metro basically saying firefighters could be prosecuted over the advice that was given to residents. i think a lot of people
10:55 pm
are seeing the heartfelt tributes from firefighters. many of whom have been left absolutely traumatised by what happened. many of the life on the line. these are decent ordinary people tried to save lives and doing extremely difficultjob. in anyjob like this and emergency services, it's split—second decisions. you perhaps don't have the full picture and hindsight. rachel? integer sheeting. the police are saying they have something has to be changed. —— it isa have something has to be changed. —— it is a true excruciating. certainly it is a true excruciating. certainly it was advice that was undermined by declining that was used in grenfell that was not designed, not compatible with that kind of advice. of course for people who lost lives, who were in that situation, that's
10:56 pm
going to be excruciating, the knowledge that they might have got out. much more on this when we... we got to leave it there. ritual, michael, thank you both very much indeed. that is it for the papers tonight. don't forget you can see the front pages of the papers online on the bbc news website. it's all there for you 7 days a week at bbc.co.uk/papers. and if you miss the programme any evening, you can watch it later on bbc iplayer. thank you, michael and rachel. goodbye. good evening. it's been another warm day right across the uk, although we lacked sunshine in the south and even had a few showers both here and towards the north. the south, the reason we had the showers, is this low pressure system winding itself up close by across france, throwing some showers, more cloud our way.
10:57 pm
and that will continue, that process, through the night, moving for the northwards to northern england, north wales and the midlands. the showers that we've had north however will diminish. it will be quite cool again. not as cold as recent nights, because we will have more cloud filtering in from the east across scotland, and that will take time to clear away during the day on friday. it will be a while before the sun comes up but it's scotland and northern ireland where we think we will get the best of the sunshine again. perhaps the northwest of england, for parts of northern england and wales, the midlands, there is slightly more cloud than we have seen today. a few sharp showers and isolated thunder. further south and east, probably fewer showers and more hazy sunshine making its way through the clouds. either way, cloudy or sunny, it's going to be a lovely, warm day across the board. you see the low 205, except right on the east coast. again, that tumbling breeze. still some sunshine, and some strong sunshine at that. very high levels of pollen again, as we had so far this week.
10:58 pm
unfortunately, no relief in sight. then through friday night into saturday, repeat performance. the showers tend to diminish and we will get misty, low cloud returning. and as we go through the weekend, very little changes. really quite a sluggish weather pattern at the moment. yes, there will be a few sharp showers, but the emphasis has to be on a lot of warmth and dry weather this weekend. there will be showers popping up here and there, the heat of the day, some of them moving their way across the channel into the channel islands and across into southern parts. the others further north tending to be developed by the heat again, and perhaps the convergence of the winds. either way, they will be fairly well scattered. there will be a lot of dry and warm weather in between. similar story to go through saturday night into sunday. this low pressure, weather system is creeping a little closer, too close for comfort, so again, it will threaten some showers moving across the channel into southern counties, but elsewhere, given the strength of the sun at this time of year and the warmth and the humidity we have in this air across the uk at the moment, temperatures will allow those showers to develop as we go through the afternoon. and it will be lightly as well, with hail and thunder potentially. but then we see a change as we head into the middle part of next week,
10:59 pm
when the jet stream starts to strengthen. we may have business as usual by midweek. this is bbc news. i'm reeta chakrabarti. the headlines at 11pm: another casualty on the high street as house of fraser announces it's to close half of its stores, with the loss of 6,000 jobs. this is brutal. this is as tough as it gets. we have not taken this decision lightly. it is very dramatic for people that we care about a great deal. the prime minister says she expect an end state customs arrangement in place by december 2021, and does not want to use her brexit backstop plan. bats as she arrives for the g7 summit. bashed bats as. —— that's as. ahead of his historic summit with north korea, president trump says he will consider inviting kim jong—un to america if the meeting goes well. 0n newsnight, we
