5:46 pm
the film review on bbc news. to take us through this week's cinema releases is mark kermode. so mark, what do we have this week? a very mixed bag. we havejurassic world: fallen kingdom. the dinosaurs are back again. mcqueen, a documentary about the british designer. and the boy downstairs, a rom com with a difference.” designer. and the boy downstairs, a rom com with a difference. i was horrified that the firstjurassic film was 25 years ago! a really long time ago. jurassic world: fallen kingdom, three years after the last one. bryce dallas howard and chris pratt agreed to be team for a rescue

mission. they have to save the dinosaurs, that is the twist. but the island is volcanic, the volcano will explode. they have to save the dinosaurs or they will go extinct for the second time. but inevitably, the mission is not what they signed up for. here is a clip. do rememberthe signed up for. here is a clip. do remember the first time you saw a diamond so. the first time you see them it is like a miracle. you read about them in books and see the bones in museums that you don't really believe it. they are like myths and then you see the first one alive. this is not your fault. but it is. this one is on me. i showed them the way. there is a clip about

them the way. there is a clip about the remember the first time you saw a sole? do remember the first time you saw a sole? do remember the first time you sanurassic a sole? do remember the first time you saw jurassic park a sole? do remember the first time you sanurassic park as a i went to the cinema. it was terrific, eve ryo ne the cinema. it was terrific, everyone was talking about it. there we re everyone was talking about it. there were moments of real terror. the problem now is that we feel like we have seen this before. on the plus side, this is directed by the director who made the cat macro orphanage and a monster calls. there are moments in this film where you think you see the film he probably wa nted think you see the film he probably wanted to make. there is one gripping scene in a child's bedroom which recalls an iconic scene from los ratti. you think this is scary, this creepy. the rest of it feels more mechanical. when it started out
5:49 pm
asa more mechanical. when it started out as a film about fairground rides involving dinosaurs, it is perhaps not surprising. they have swapped roles between chris pratt and bryce dallas howard. that is interesting. in the last movie the dinosaurs were more convincing than the human counterparts. but now bryce dallas howard has got rid of the high heels and you do feel there is some human interest. the best i can say is it is fine, and there are moments in it that i think ok, that is the movie i would like to have seen, but it is very much a mechanical blockbuster roller—coaster ride. it is better thanjurassic roller—coaster ride. it is better than jurassic world which felt rather soulless. it is better than that. but if you think back to the first time you saw that. but if you think back to the first time you sanurassic park, that visceral thrill, there are moments injurassic that visceral thrill, there are moments in jurassic park that visceral thrill, there are moments injurassic park which are as good as jaws and we are not in that league. plus, it is not the

end, there is more to come.” that league. plus, it is not the end, there is more to come. i cannot wait for the next one, she lied! mcqueen, however, a fascinating troubled man. does it make a good film though? does. i know nothing about fashion, literally which is why i dress like this. and if something is not in a movie i don't know about it. it is about an east end boy who grew up to be a ground—breaking design. he had his own label and caused a real stir. this draws on taped interviews throughout his life. he said he was no good at school but he was always drawing clothes in chemistry lessons. he started an apprenticeship and people saw that he had naturalflair apprenticeship and people saw that he had natural flair and apprenticeship and people saw that he had naturalflair and natural talent. some of the early shows were shocking. i would talent. some of the early shows were shocking. iwould have talent. some of the early shows were shocking. i would have been one of the naysayers thinking this is outrageous because i do not understand the fashion world. but
5:51 pm
what i love about the best documentaries is they take you into a world in which you know absolutely nothing, this talks about the way the darkness was reflected in his work. it has candid interviews with those who were closest to him. it looks at every side of his character. by the end of it i can see why some of these creations were really astonishing and i can see the sculptural quality. and the shows, as pieces of theatre words breathtaking. so dramatic. iwas as pieces of theatre words breathtaking. so dramatic. i was one over and i went in from a position of co m plete over and i went in from a position of complete ignorance. what i know about fashion would not fill the back of a postage stamp and i found this really engaging. ended you love fashion there is even more to it. there is a desperate ending which sadly we are all aware. an interesting documentary. and a newcomer? the boy downstairs stars
5:52 pm
zosia mamet who is in hbo's girls. she plays a midi who lives in new york. she has gone to london for a year. she comes back, moves into an apartment and discovers the boy she broke up with is living in the same apartment block. it is difficult because should they be friends, should they talk? the film is about your quickness they have now and also flashing back to their past relationship. here is a clip. so how are you? i am good. thanks. you have been making movie and it is going well —— you have been making music and it is going well? still a struggle but it is good. i am on the road. you are touring? no, i mean the figurative road. i am working in commercials. that is great. thanks. lam commercials. that is great. thanks. i am really happy for you.”
5:53 pm
commercials. that is great. thanks. i am really happy for you. i love it when zosia mamet says you are touring? the film has that whole tone to it. the writer and director is obviously a fan of nora ephron. she catches the awkwardness of relationships but this reminds me of a movie many years ago called walking and talking. it had that same loose limbed intimacy. it is a way of making something that looks very casual, that looks like these characters have just turned up and they are having these conversations. that takes real precision to do. although it was weird, after the screening, some people found the characters really annoying. i said, thatis characters really annoying. i said, that is not the point. you understand their lives and you believe in their relationship. i thought it was funny, charming, moving and really well put together.
5:54 pm
it moved me to tears at one point. i was really surprised by how much it charmed me. i love nora ephron and that awkwardness we saw is such a human reaction. i don't know what to do! it is that thing of not quite being able to say the thing they wa nt to being able to say the thing they want to say. i think it is great. i think you will really like it. if you can seek it out, it is worth seeing. and you still think the best one this week is the breadwinner. yes, it has outperformed at the box office. it is a hard sell, it is about a young girl in afghanistan. i think the animation is beautiful. it is adapted from a book. and the best thing is it talks about a really difficult subject matter but it does ina way difficult subject matter but it does in a way that i think younger audiences could watch and appreciate. i think you could almost use this as a history lesson in
5:55 pm
schools. this was life under the taliban and how journey ‘s end is a very dark story but i thought it was told with real compassion. does it work on a small screen? this can be the problem with big scenes like that. you feel guilt watching it on a small screen. all ta kes pla ce
5:56 pm
watching it on a small screen. all takes place in an enclosed space. i think it would work watching it on an iphone because the performances are that good but the cinematography is very good. it needs to be seen. fair point! entirely valid. a really interesting week. thank you. see you again next week. a reminder that you can find all the film news and reviews from across the bbc online. all our previous programmes are on the bbc iplayer as well of course. that is it for this week. see you next time. thank you for being with us. bye—bye. it will be too sunny to watch films this weekend. beautiful weather expected out there. but there are some showers in the forecast as well
