of the new health service. we had our own budgets. that's one of the biggest changes, i suppose. we were able to get some capital expenditure and improve the hospital, over the years improve the hospital from the old dickensian buildings to modern ones, lifts and modern sanitary blocks and all that sort of thing. this we were able to do once we got our own budget. let's have a look atjoan's x—ray. that patch on her lung is evidence of tuberculosis. tuberculosis is much less of a worry now but, with people living longer, the workload of the nhs has grown dramatically. the modern—day head of nhs england is proud of the long and distinguished history. this is what will be through your letterbox, your new national health service begins on the 5th ofjuly. so how does he see the future of the service over the next 70 years? i suspect the thing that won't change, but this

will be our decision as the british people, is that people like the idea of a national health service where the money worry is gone and care is available when you need it. but what will be different, i suspect, is that we are on the cusp of huge advances in cancer treatments, in personalised medicine. there have been big advances since 1948. the message there is that change will come even faster in the decades ahead. hugh pym, bbc news. newsnight‘s about to begin over on bbc two. here on bbc one it's time for the news where you are. they have confirmed, the type that was used on a former spy four months agojust nine miles was used on a former spy four months ago just nine miles away. let's was used on a former spy four months agojust nine miles away. let's hear what they had to say. this evening, i have received test results, that showed the two people have been exposed to the nerve agent. at approximately 10:15am on saturday

the 30th of june, approximately 10:15am on saturday the 30th ofjune, the southwest ambulance service was called to a residential address. a 44—year—old woman had collapsed. she was subsequently ta ken to woman had collapsed. she was subsequently taken to hospital. at around 3:30pm that day, the ambulance was called back to the same address what a 45 real men had also fallen ill. the man was taken to hospital. from initial assessment, the two patients had fallen ill. however, on monday the 2nd ofjuly, due to concerns from the man and woman were displaying, sample from both patients were sent for analysis. following the detailed analysis of those samples, we can confirm the man and woman were exposed to the nerve agent never to which was the same agent that contaminated both yulia and sergei

skripal. the latest update we have from the hospital is that both patients remained in a critical condition. both are british nationals and are local to the area. officers are still trying to edify their next of kin. at this stage, and this is important, at this stage no one else has presented with the same symptoms linked to this instance. the priority for the investigation team now is to establish how these two people have come into contact with this nerve agent. i have around 100 detectives from the counterterrorism network working on this investigation alongside their colleagues. we have cordoned off a number of sites in amesbury and salisbury areas and we believe the two individuals visited in the period before they fell ill. this is a precautionary measure. while we continue to investigate how they came to be exposed to this substance. i do want to reassure the

public that there is no evidence that even this man a woman recently visited even the sites that had been decontaminated following the attempted murders of yulia and sergei skripal. looking ahead over the couple of days, people in the area can expect to see increased police presence which will include officers wearing protective equipment as they carry out activities at a number of sites. this will look very similar to some of the activity you have all seen ta ke of the activity you have all seen take place in salisbury earlier this year. again, this is a precaution but necessary measure and allows officers to carry out systematic searches for evidence that will support the investigation. this must be done with great care as you appreciate to ensure there is no outstanding risk to both those brave officers and the public at large. i appreciate there will be a great deal of speculation as to whether this incident is linked to those events in salisbury in march this year. i would add that the complex

investigation into the attempted murders of yulia and sergei remain ongoing and to texas continued to sift through and assess all the available evidence and they are following every possible lead to identify those with possible for what remains a reckless and barbaric criminal act. however, i what remains a reckless and barbaric criminalact. however, i must say what remains a reckless and barbaric criminal act. however, i must say we are not in a position to say whether the nerve agent was from the same batch scribbles were exposed to. the possibility that these might be linked, however the investigation must be led by the evidence available and we do not make any assumptions. or speculation. therefore we are keen to hear from anyone who has information and if you think you do, i would urge you to co nta ct you think you do, i would urge you to contact the police, calling away hundred, 79, three 21. away hundred

79 321. it is not believed there is a significant health risk to the wider public. of course the chief medical officer is with me and we'll update you on the very latest public health, after which we will be happy to get one record for questions.” am professor sally davis the chief medical officer for england and as you have heard these two patients are in critical condition following exposure to the nerve agent or two. following events in march, we have response to this incident and clear processes to follow. 0ur priorities at this time are to care for the patient and to understand the circumstances surrounding how these two individuals became unwell, thus ensuring there is no further risk to the public health from this incident. as a country chief medical

officer, i want to reassure the public that the risk to the general public that the risk to the general public remains low. i understand that those in salisbury and surrounding areas will be concerned at this news, particularly those who have recently visited the areas now cordoned off by the police. my advice or any individual who may have been in any of the areas now cordoned off from 10pm on friday evening onwards is highly precautionary. as before, my advice is to wash her close and white down any personal items, shoes and bags, in cleansing or baby wipes before disposing them in the usual way. this is the same public health advice i gave during the previous incident. but now up brace approach. ido want incident. but now up brace approach. i do want to warn the public to be careful of picking up any unknown or dangerous objects, such as needles or syringe is. you do not need to
10:38 pm
seek advice from a health professional i miss you are experiencing symptoms as any individual will have been significantly exposed at the same time by now have symptoms. those people from the area who are concerned should call nhs 111. i also want to highlight that the areas of salisbury already cleaned and back in use are safe. i would like to commend the professionalism of our like to commend the professionalism of our emergency like to commend the professionalism of our emergency staff as well as those in salisbury district hospital, particularly those intensive care unit. i want to reiterate the police are still investigating how this event happened and the public should continue to follow the police advice and that of public health england. we will ensure regular updates as we get further information. thank you. that was the latest news there from

metropolitan police and in the last few minutes, the home secretary has issued this statement. he says i wa nt to issued this statement. he says i want to express my thanks to the emergency services and staff at the salisbury district hospital for their tireless professionalism in dealing with the incident in amesbury. it follows the reckless and barbaric attack which took place in salisbury in march. he goes onto say the amesbury investigation is ongoing and the police must be given the space they need to continue establishing the full facts. my thoughts at this time i would do two individuals affected. the government first priority is the safety of residents and local area which pub health and that has clear it the risk to the general public is low. he goes on to say tomorrow he will chaira he goes on to say tomorrow he will chair a meeting of the governments emergency, or in relation to the ongoing investigation. that is the latest from the home secretary. i home affairs correspondent is at scotla nd home affairs correspondent is at scotland yard for us now. daniel, what do you make of what the police

has had to say and the last couple of hours about all of this? detectives in a position now where they thought they had contained attacks back in march, where two people, sergei skripal, there was a reason and a motive for attacking him that they could seek and his daughter became contaminated, the police officer that was investigating them became contaminated and after that it was trying to work out who had done it. and now suddenly for months on, they find themselves in a situation where it does not appear to be contained. two new people, became contaminated on saturday by what appears to be the same nerve agent, though please cannot be certain it was from the same batch. that leaves police facing two possibilities. one is some other area they did not decontaminate that they were previously unaware of, some kind of object or part of the environment is still contaminated with this nerve
10:41 pm
agent and bbs people became contaminated from that or perhaps less likely and more unnervingly the possibility that there has been some sort of a second attack to try and muddy the waters around the first attack. i think detectives are at the moment concentrating on the first of those possibilities, trying to work out what kind of secondary contamination these people may have experienced and where that may have happened some kind of discarded equipment or some place where the nerve agent had been stored or something like that. they are having to keep an open mind to keep open possibility that there has been some sort of secondary attack. there live at scotland yard for us with this ongoing breaking story tonight. let's get more reaction now from doctor richard guthrie. he is an independent expert on biological weapons. think you forjoining us. what you make of what you heard? it seems there have been further contamination with novichok around
10:42 pm
the area of salisbury. what you make of what you have heard? what we've from daniel is correct. there may be, he referred to equipment, there may be for example gloves or a jacket the person who is using the poison in the skripal case may have tried to put away somewhere that might not be easily found and it may not have been spotted as people were looking for things to clean up. how alarmed at think people will be or should be in this area? given this is several miles from salisbury, they were reassured at the time of course that the clean—up had taken place. we have seen people on—site from the army and in special sues for weeks after that attack. how concerned should people be now that it has not been contained? some of

this material was obviously somewhere unexpected. i think the chances of a lot of people being exposed to something are very small. my guess is it is an object that these two individuals perhaps came across, perhaps in an exceptional set of circumstances. very difficult to determine and very difficult to do too much speculation because that can end up being misleading because people to an extent are guessing right now. but it will be really important to work out where these two individuals have been, what they have picked up object, where they have picked up object, where they have ta ken objects have picked up object, where they have taken objects away and one of the possibilities for example is that whoever smeared the material on the door knob of the skripal house cold, people want to get rid of the clothing they were wearing. they might be wearing a leatherjacket or something that any material would have splashed onto to protect the person who was carrying out the

poison. if that was then thrown away somewhere, somebody else might pick it up and handle it and perhaps get exposed. given the eyewitness accou nts exposed. given the eyewitness a ccou nts of exposed. given the eyewitness accounts of these couple who have been taken ill,
