in washington. at least 17 people have died after an amphibious tourist duck boat sank in story whether in missouri. first a look at what is coming up this evening on bbc news. with the uk and the eu at odds over how to achieve not having a hard border in ireland, we will hear from the belfast chamber of commerce this evening. we will find out if compilation albums can survive digital streaming. and we would take a first look at tomorrow's papers with our reviewers. that's at half past ten and half past 11. that is all coming up and half past 11. that is all coming up on bbc news. now it is time for sportsday. hello and welcome to sportsday. willa briton end the run of

american dominance in golf‘s majors? england's tommy fleetwood states his case on day two of the open at carnoustie. max makes his mark at hockenheim. verstappen is fastest after second practice ahead of this weekend's german grand prix. lucky for some — mr sprint peter sagan takes the 13th stage at the tour de france in a photo finish. and with the women's hockey world cup coming to london tomorrow, can the england squad replicate their medal successes on home soil? hello and welcome to sportsday. good evening. well, the action at the 1a7th open championship is hotting up as we enter the weekend, even if the temperatures on the east
6:32 pm
coast of scotland seem to be going in the opposite direction. day two has seen zachjohnson, tommy fleetwood and rory mcilroy play themselves into contention as all three recorded rounds in the 60s, despite some very testing conditions at carnoustie. john watson is at the course for us. john, even at this early stage, it's looking like it could be a tough one to call this year? yes, absolutely. welcome to carnoustie, good evening. incredibly tough to call. incredibly tight as well as the top of the leaderboard suggests. we have four players in a tie for the lead, all on —6 at the moment, including the americans are zachjohnson moment, including the americans are zach johnson and kevin moment, including the americans are zachjohnson and kevin kisner. how different it could have been the kevin kisner, the overnight leader. he was two shots clear of the field at one stage on —8 but on his last
6:33 pm
hole he found the burn, showing the dangers which light on this tricky course. but as we know it is a bit ofa course. but as we know it is a bit of a tussle between the americans and the britons. tommy fleetwood and rory mcilory put in superb second rounds today to put themselves into contention heading into the weekend, which is set up to be a thriller, as tim hague can tell us. day two and unlike the fine sunshine of the first round, carnoustie offered different challenges today. not that they affected tommy fleetwood. whatever the weather, the englishman is infine whatever the weather, the englishman is in fine form. his 65 puts him right in contention. and the 2014 winner might not be far off, either. rory mcilory, two rounds of 69 and two off the lead. there are few players as popular as mcilroy but tiger woods is one of them. he had a
6:34 pm
mixed day but he will be back for more. zachjohnson will be as well. he shares the lead on —6 with fellow american kevin kisner. he was well clear at one point, only for this to happen at the last. and then, on the same bridge, time the tears and celebration. the 1985 champion sandy lyle finishing in scotland and northern ireland finishing with not a dry eye in the house. tim hague, bbc news. it is worth taking a look at that leaderboard. 0f bbc news. it is worth taking a look at that leaderboard. of those four players in a share for the lead. kevin kisner will be bitterly disappointed with a double bogey on his final hole. but he has set himself up heading into the weekend. impressive stuff as well from tommy fleetwood and rory mcilory. 0f impressive stuff as well from tommy fleetwood and rory mcilory. of those selected others, jordan spieth, the defending champion, doing well on three. tiger woods, level par today.
6:35 pm
he posted another round of 71. just to draw your attention to justin rose, who's currently +4 and he will have to pick up some shots if he is to avoid missing the cut. and john, one of the main talking points going into this was the competition between the americans and the rest of the world, we saw the stars & stripes at the top of the leaderboard there and also the weather has been a talking point, we saw plenty of umbrellas during that report from tim hague, looks pretty seen it where you are — did it affect the players much?” seen it where you are — did it affect the players much? i think heading out first thing this morning they had to deal with the worst conditions, with the rain coming down. but it certainly softened the ground a little bit. we saw how tough it was yesterday with the scorched fairways. and if you were a loose with your drive, it would run and run into the rough, making it
6:36 pm
difficult. but with more moisture on the surface today, it was sticking a little bit more, if more favourable on the greens, as alluded to by rory mcilory. conditions eased this afternoon as well as the sun came out, allowing the players to play aggressive golf with the moisture as well, enabling them to pick up some of those birdies. really impressive from tommy fleetwood, we know he has history with this course, he holds the course record here at carnoustie and he played really well at the us 0pen as well, equalling the course record at shinnecock hills there as well. rory mcilory as well looking to improve on what has been a poor showing for him recently at the majors. his last win came back in 2014, the open championship. but
6:37 pm
they are trying to claw back the american dominance in those majors. brooks koepka, the defending champion, successfully defending his title at the us open, patrick reid, of course, at the masters as well just but it looks as though they have set themselves up well going into the weekend. —— patrick reed. we can hear from into the weekend. —— patrick reed. we can hearfrom tommy into the weekend. —— patrick reed. we can hear from tommy fleetwood 110w. we can hear from tommy fleetwood now. it was a very strong round-off golf and i hit a lot of the golf shots and probably —6, when you're out there you and your hitting the shots and when you come in you think, yeah, that was really, really good. and it will be a tough score, if you went out you would not fancy beating —6 so i think that is a good indication of how good it was.|j beating —6 so i think that is a good indication of how good it was. i am ina great indication of how good it was. i am in a great position going into the third day. i was probably top ten going into the third day at birkdale la st going into the third day at birkdale last year, so similar enough but i'm
6:38 pm
happy, i feel like last year, so similar enough but i'm happy, ifeel like i played in the toughest of the conditions and definitely our side of the draw, we had to tough it out a little bit, it was a little more difficult, so i am happy to be in with a shout and hopefully i can go out and play well again tomorrow and then that will be again tomorrow and then that will be a big chance going into sunday. and talking about the american dominance, astonishing to think that we could be without the pga championship justin thomas heading into the weekend. he looks likely to miss the cut on +4. we could be losing dustinjohnson, miss the cut on +4. we could be losing dustin johnson, the miss the cut on +4. we could be losing dustinjohnson, the world number one as well, currently on +6. astonishing really to think that we could be losing the top two americans. some notable other absentees heading into the weekend, sergio garcia, former masters champion, looks like he will miss out on +4. ian poulter, another of the big names that could miss out if it goes to show how tough this course can be as some of the world's
6:39 pm
best have once again found out today. but it is set up beautifully heading into the weekend. and we look to tommy fleetwood and rory mcilory after their performances today to see what they can produce tomorrow. john watson at carnoustie, thanks. formula 1 rolls into hockenheim for the german grand prix this weekend. after his amazing drive at the last race in britain, mercedes‘ lewis hamilton will be hoping to build on the positive momentum as he battles with championship leader sebastian vettel. jennie gow watched today's two practice sessions, which saw red bull's max verstappen lay down the surprise early marker. well, the german grand prix took a break last year but we are back here at the hockenheim and what a fantastic weekend it is going to be. we have already had a lot of action on and off the track, both of the mercedes drivers signing new contracts, lewis hamilton on a
6:40 pm
multi—million pound deal for two yea rs multi—million pound deal for two years and valtteri bottas, his teammate, signing up for another year with an option for another year on top of that. so, good news for mercedes but on the track it was red all who dominated, daniel ricciardo the fastest in the first session, max verstappen fastest in the second. however, there is a slight problem in that daniel ricciardo has to change some elements in his engine, and that power unit change means a grid penalty and he will start from last. that means there will be lots of overtaking hopefully from his point of view. however the qualifying, whatever he does, he will start from behind. max verstappen, however, does have a realistic chance of poll position, as do the varietys and the mercedes. in the midfield, really tight again and as for daniel ricciardo at the back, who would have thought this time 20 years ago that it would be the likes of the williams and mclaren is battling it out to see who was going to be last and that is
6:41 pm
the reality of this current season in formula 1, those two teens really struggling today. however it should bea struggling today. however it should be a cracking weekend here in the sunshine in germany. there's still a long way to go in the hunt for the f1 title. the same is true on two wheels at the tour de france. but geraint thomas has retained the leader's yellow jersey after stage 13. today's stage was won by slovakia's peter sagan, who just managed to hold off the charge of alexander kristoff to win by a wheel's length. sagan is one of the only sprint specialists left in the tour after the mountains have taken their toll. but britain's geraint thomas finished safely in the main group and leads his sky team mate chris froome by1 min 39secs. still to come on the programme... we drop in on the pre—season preparations for pep and manchester city as they continue their tour through the united states. and we head to the golden state of california, where england's red roses are going for victory in the rugby sevens world cup. now there's a bit of a world cup theme to the second

opportunity to become history makers once again. the women's hockey world cup comes here to london tomorrow and over 100,000 tickets have been sold. they are adding to the strength that we have is a group, adding to the strength that we have on the field at that time. it's genuine excitement, it's genuine readiness, it's... we are so prepared and we are ready to go. this time, the team competes as england rather than great britain. it's the one major title i never claimed. four years ago, it's the one major title i never claimed. fouryears ago, despite being tipped as potential champions they finish second from bottom. suppertime today commence? they finish second from bottom. suppertime today commence ?|j they finish second from bottom. suppertime today commence? i mean it still haunts a lot of us that are involved now so fingers crossed whatever is thrown at us in london, we will be able to bounce back from it. with some players retiring and others coming in, it is a different line up from rio. with the eyes of the world on them they will be aiming to replicate that success on home soil.
6:44 pm
well we are going to stay with events at the olympic park this weekend because east london is also seeing some the the world's best in athletics arrive to put on a show at the anniversary games in the london stadium. britain's dina asher smith will run in the 100m and 200m, looking to compete in both at next month's european championships. ultimately when i stand on the line i want to win and i feel very fortu nate i want to win and i feel very fortunate that i am able to be in this calibre of race and add to its. iam also this calibre of race and add to its. i am also grateful that the calibre of race is in london, where i am 42 enough to be the only brit in the race know the cheers are for me! —— fortu nate race know the cheers are for me! —— fortunate enough. so if i hear that she is getting louder i know it is, speed up because they are all coming 01’ speed up because they are all coming or they are all getting further away 01’ or they are all getting further away or something like that! it feels really, really good to have that kind of race at home, because i a lwa ys kind of race at home, because i always have to put on a good show for a home crowd, it's feels good. england's u19s could only manage a draw

in their second match at the euros in finland, they won their first match against turkey. the young lions took the lead against ukraine after middlebrough‘s marcus tavernier scored with a well—struck effort. but the equaliser came just before half—time when trevoh chalobah couldn't deal with the ukrainian striker before he finished brilliantly. england's final group game is against france on monday afternoon. now the premier league season begins in three weeks, and even though the world cup only ended last sunday, thoughts are already turning to who may stand the best chance of toppling manchester city's incredible centurions. pep guardiola's side are tuning up with the international champions cup in the united states and a friendly against borussia dortmund early tomorrow morning. simon stone has been with the squad in chicago. the world cup finish to nearly a week ago. and it is still having an impact on domestic matters.
6:46 pm
manchester city had a record 16 players in russia, 11 of them reached the knockout phase. none will be available tonight when they open their pre—season campaign against borussia dortmund here at chicago's soldier field. not that that situation is anything new for manager pep guardiola. they have to come back when they are physically and mentally ready to start like a young boy to start the season. if the day before they are tired and they are not ready mentally and like this and they don't want to fight for the new title, the community shield, stay on holidays. when you come back the past is the past, we cannot forget what we have done, because it will be a big mistake, but we start again and we are going to try. they are ready they are going to help us, if not we are going to help us, if not we are going to help us, if not we are going to wait for them. one familiar face who is here is goalkeeperjoe hart. after unsuccessful

face who is here is goalkeeperjoe ha rt. after u nsuccessful loa n face who is here is goalkeeperjoe hart. after unsuccessful loan spells at torino and west ham, joe hart is back at manchester city. but with no future under guardiola and a year left on his contract, he faces an uncertain future ahead of next month's transfer window. well, manchester united are involved in the same tournament. juan mata rescued jose mourinho's side from an opening pre—season defeat last night. united came from behind in the second half against mexican side club america, drawing 1—1, missing many of their key players after the world cup. tournament winner paul pogba of france and english duo jesse lingard and marcus rashford were among those absent. frank lampard knows what life in america is like, having ended his career in the mls, but he's about to step into the unknown with his firstjob in management. the new derby county manager has his first home game at pride park tomorrow, and we asked him how he'd found the passionate support for him from the rams fans so far.
6:48 pm
iam from i am from london bridge is full of quite a few top clubs and the support is varied across the city. and then you come to derby and it is a one club city and people are so passionate, wherever you go they wa nt to passionate, wherever you go they want to speak to you, they have all been very nice and welcoming, which isa been very nice and welcoming, which is a great thing. to see 4000 plus at notts county, to see 1500 or so at notts county, to see 1500 or so at mansfield and supporting and being really positive, had pretty excited about what we are trying to do, has been brilliant for me to see. and the players. because we will need that support throughout the season, you cannot put a gauge on how important that support will be at pride park or the travelling fans. it lifts the players, they appreciated and so do i and we will work on this together. well, the football world cup didn't come home for england, but what about in rugby union? well, before we get to the 15—a—side world cup next year, there is a chance for glory this summer. both the men's and women's rugby

sevens teams are playing in san francisco over the weekend and hoping to dojust that but for the women, there's more at stake than simply silverware. david mcdaid has more. a kickabout in the sunshine. not so unusual given how world cup fever has gripped england this summer. these women, though, are more adept with the oval ball. england's rugby sevens with the oval ball. england's rugby seve ns tea m with the oval ball. england's rugby sevens team are about to take on the world themselves and harry kane and company have given them a timely boost. to get to the semifinal is unreal. and for us i guess because they are at a world cup and we are going to a world cup it is kind of like, if they're doing well, we want to do well, we want to be able to say, we have got to the semifinal as well. it is really inspiring. these women, though, aren't just well. it is really inspiring. these women, though, aren'tjust taking inspiration. commentator: deborah fleming goes in for england's second... they are also in the business of providing

it. and they are a squad on the up as they showed at the commonwealth games. we got a bronze medal which we re games. we got a bronze medal which were really happy with and it set up us were really happy with and it set up us up well for this tail end of the season and hopefully inspired some younger girls to take up sevens as well because that is massive in this country and this world cup is another opportunity to do that. this comes another opportunity to do that. this comes at a time when women sport is striving for equality and in san francisco their tournament will share the limelight alongside their male colleagues just that sort of thing, how is that for you? it really is massive, to do things alongside the men, it builds the profile for us and it exposes us to crowds and to people that have never maybe watched women's rugby that actually they can sit and watch it and actually they might go, i quite liked that and they come again and that's really important. success on the field, of course, can help that movement, too. and although much progress has been made, england enter the competition seeded eighth. we have been growing and some of the performances we have put in have been outstanding and we've probably
6:51 pm
lacked the consistency so far, hence the few mixed results but when we are on fire, we're on fire. obviously, we're going to be aiming to create a few upsets and it would be silly not to say we are going for the big win. so, the message is, write them off at your peril. but it seems winning medals is only part of a bigger picture. david mcdaid, bbc news. now more world championships are on the horizon but this one's a little bit different. have you ever considered hockey, but played underwater? the sport, which is also known as octopush, is growing in popularity and the british squad are preparing to battle it out with the rest of the world in canada this week. james burridge found out more. welcome to this bizarre and surprisingly physical world of underwater hockey. it can be really rough. technically it is a non—contact sports. generally we aren't meant to be touching one

another under the water. but you do get on occasions hit by a straight elbow or by the puck. watching this sport is fascinating, they're like sharks in the water with their fins waiting for that moment to pounce. and it is all about communication and breeding, because even though it looks calm on the top of the water, believe me, ben eaton it, it is anything but. this is the puck that we use underwater, it is the most important piece of kit. some people can flick it up to three metres. we have things, some people call them flip is. we need a mask, a mask the close morkel, a glove to protect our hands, because believe it or not the bottom of the pool are very sharp. and last but not least, a stick which is quite short but allows us to control and manoeuvre the puck. claire is one of four players from dunstable in the british squad preparing for this month's world championships in canada. each team consists of ten players but only six are submerged in the water at any one time. the remaining four act as

rolling substitutes. strong arms and legs are essential and of course eight deep breath. when i used to start playing you used to almost get this need to breathe so your body would almost convulse and get rid of the carbon dioxide which had built up the carbon dioxide which had built up but now, that doesn't really happen that much any more. i guess my happen that much any more. i guess d happen that much any more. i guess my body knows that eventually i will breathe again! how do you rate your chances at the worlds? good, i reckon we have got a really good chance this year. we have got a really amazing team, an amazing coach. we have been building up to it for a few years now so i'm feeling really good. australia and new zealand are likely to prove their toughest opponents on their voyage to the bottom of the pool. getting there is one thing, scrapping for a pink puck when your lungs are bursting, quite another. and best of luck to them! certainly looks intriguing — if you do want to try something new, go to the get inspired page on the bbc sport website and app. the latest from the open is available on bbc sport website and app with reaction to come
