thomas who look set to win his first grand tour after extending his lead in the tourde grand tour after extending his lead in the tour de france with one more meaningful stage to go. he grabbed six more seconds advantage on another gruelling stage to take his overall lead to two minutes and five seconds. all that and more coming up at 6:30pm but now it is time for the film review. hello and welcome to the film review on bbc news. to take us through this week's cinema releases is james king. so james, what do we have this week? summer is upon us. i have been watching action on the streets as tom cruise saves the world again in mission: impossible — fallout. there
5:48 pm
has been action in the air as well as dracula and his friends go on a monster vacation in hotel tra nsylva nia monster vacation in hotel transylvania 3. and there has been action in the alps as i went back 5000 years for the story of the iceman. every genre is covered this week and mission: impossible, it looks like they spent a lot of money. this is number six, the first one was in 1996. tom cruise is back as ethan hunt, the special agent who is tracking down some missing plutonium helped by his usual cohorts including rebecca ferguson and simon pegg. there is a new boy, henry cavill, superman, he is playing a cia agent watching every move that ethan hunt makes. it is action packed and they say that the traffic in paris is very bad, that

will not stop tom cruise. let us have a look. do you copy? we copy. go! change of plan. i'm going rogue. need extraction. we're on our way! sirens. and that sums up the film quite

well. pretty much. i loved it. i thought it was just brilliant. and, you know, tom cruise has been doing this for a long time, over 35 years he has been acting and a leading man and just the energy of the guy and the dynamism of the guy is second to none. he does constantly surprises me andi none. he does constantly surprises me and i think that there is that balance, that all summer blockbusters should have, which is, on the one hand it feels realistic at times, there is stuff about terrorism and rogue fanatics, that feels like it is plucked from the newspapers, but on the other hand, it is completely ridiculous. and those action scenes like that one or one ina those action scenes like that one or one in a helicopter and a skydiving scene, they are over the top and brilliant and it gets the balance
5:51 pm
right between those things. some of it is quite beautiful, the production design is so stylish, i have never seen a fight in men sure i know look quite so stylish! you have to tell it like it is. that was a special moment. christopher mcquarrie who did this and did the previous one and has worked with tom cruise many times before, he is really like men talk to tom cruise, they work together well and tom cruise is the star and producer and christopher mcquarrie is the writer and director and christopher mcquarrie is the writer and directorandi christopher mcquarrie is the writer and director and i think it is a great partnership. it helps this film that it is one writer behind it with one a clear vision, it is not muddied by a whole team of writers and it is not muddied by lots of fan expectation and fan boy hype. that is all going on in the marvel world book world but the mission: impossible films relatively speaking, without an awful lot of

fuss and hype and yet they consistently deliver the goods. fuss and hype and yet they consistently deliver the goodsm is the summer blockbuster and that is the summer blockbuster and that is official. it is one of the best mission: impossible films. there is a recommendation for the summer. cartoon capers? hotel transylvania 3. so dracula is back, voiced by adam sandler and this time he is taking his friends on holiday, on a cruise and that is the invisible man and frankenstein's monster and other fiendish friends. they are always being followed around by their arch nemesis, mr van helsing not too far away and you know what? i thought i would watch this with the sound of bram stoker spinning in his grave accompanying every scene, but it is actually better than i expected. it is certainly full of energy, hyperactive some might say, but it
5:53 pm
is not like pixar movie, it does not have that sleek feel, but it does have that sleek feel, but it does have a hanna—barbera craziness. even though it is nonsense really, you're not bored watching because it is so colourful and there is so much going on and the music is relentless. i don't think it is a classic. it keeps you going. the worst thing would be is if you felt bored, but because it is so fast pace, boredom is one thing you do not feel. i think it is love and not as good as the incredible is too but not bad. iceman, i have not seen it, but i am intrigued. you might remember in the early 19905 there was a body discovered in the alps in austria and people initially thought he was and people initially thought he was a hiker, but it turned out to be the body of a hunter from over 5000 years ago that had been preserved in the eyes and it is now in a museum in italy. this movie is the back

story of how he got there and what is life story is presumed to be. a lot of it is dramatic license. it is all told in a roman era alpine language. there are no subtitles, the director said he did not think they would be needed, it is a universal story and i think it is true. essentially what it is is a revenge story. they have given this character a revenge story where he is trying to track down people who attacked his family. it is like taken up with liam neeson but in the alps with beards and spears. screams. is this a really tough watch? it is
5:55 pm
all about physical endurance. yes. the worst thing about it, weirdly, it feels familiar. it is like a hollywood revenge movie but in a different setting and a different language. although there is a novelty factor to it, actually the story plays out quite conventionally. it is certainly a curiosity, but whether it is a must see, i don't know. intriguing. what

have you chosen as the best out of? first reformed. it is about a priest going through a crisis. a spiritual crisis, a personal crisis. in a way it is paul schrader on familiar ground is, he most famously wrote taxi. he often deals with questions of faith, obsession and guilt and it is all there. it is a brilliant performance from ethan hawke who we tend to think of as more wide—eyed and energetic, he is a broken man in this and he is at the end of his tether and desperate. talking about gutsy with iceman, this is a really gutsy with iceman, this is a really gutsy film with the weight and depth and some stunning visual moments, just really full—blooded and at this time of year when it is the season for blockbusters, if you want to see something that has some real guts to it, i would something that has some real guts to it, iwould recommend something that has some real guts to it, i would recommend this. first reformed and out on dvd this week is

that extraordinary isle of dogs. reformed and out on dvd this week is that extraordinary isle of dogsm is an digital download. this is wes anderson's animation about humans and their pets and the bond between them and it is a love letter to japan as well. and that has caused a bit of debate about whether it is white guy from texas should be making that movie but it is clearly from the heart. with his usual eccentric humour and style, and his usual voice talent, jeff goldblum, bill murray, tilda swinton, and i found it really moving. i do not think it will convert people who do not like his films, they are quite mannered, but i think that bond between humans and their pets, it is described rather touchingly here.|j think you are right and british people love a story about their animals and the attention to detail is amazing. it looks amazing and i
5:58 pm
don't think it is an animation necessarily for children, i think it is aimed more at adults. james, lovely to see you. that's it for this week though. thanks for watching. goodbye. and this current hot spell has come to an end and we have some vicious thunderstorms breaking out now across parts of east anglia, the midlands as well, these midlands in particular, torrential downpours, gusty winds, really violent storms asi gusty winds, really violent storms as i speak. and those storms will travel further north over the coming hours, some are sparking off around london and the south—east, out towards the west, these are not storms, these are in showers that will bring fresh conditions by the

end of the night and through saturday. saturday, very different story across the uk. the weather front opens the gates to that much fresher air off the atlantic, oceanic air moving in and quite breezy conditions, so i think on saturday, we will call it that classic mixture of sunshine and showers and as temperatures dropping dramatically there in the south eased down to below or maybe mid 205 but for most of us, in the high teens. that is it from me, goodbye. the extreme weather causes extreme problems for travellers as the uk's transport network struggles to cope. at the start of one of the busiest weekends of the summer holidays rail passengers india major delays and drivers are told to be prepared. when you are travelling at slower speeds if you can handle it turn yourair speeds if you can handle it turn your air conditioning off, bring your air conditioning off, bring your windows down, let the air circulate the car and that will alleviate the pressure that's happening to the engine. rescuers search for a boy missing in clacton
