the little master gives his thoughts on india's captain virat kohli. the england cricketer ben stokes played a key part in england's dramatic win over india last week, but this week he's in court accused of affray. on monday, the first day of his trial, a court here in england heard how stokes is accused of mocking two gay men, before brawling with two others. stokes denies affray. but while his teammates prepare for the second test match against india that begins on thursday, he'll still be in court. here's our sports editor, dan roan. having had to swap cricket field for courtroom, ben stokes arrived here this morning for the opening day of his trial. dressed in a navy suit, the 27—year—old all—rounder sat in the dock alongside two local men he's accused of punching during a fight in the city last year, ryan hale and ryan ali. all three are accused of affray, a charge they each deny.

the jury was shown this mobile phone footage of a late—night brawl outside a bristol nightclub in september, just hours after stokes had played for england. both hale and ali were knocked unconscious by the cricketer, leaving ali with significant injuries, including a broken eye socket. the court was told stokes lost his control and started to attack with revenge, retaliation or punishment in mind, well beyond the realm of self—defence. not a trivial moment of unpleasantness, but a sustained episode of significant violence that left onlookers shocked. the prosecution said stokes insisted he acted in fear for himself and others, and believed the force he used was reasonable and entirely justified. however, the jury was told that earlier in the night, having been denied re—entry to the nightclub, stokes had acted in a provocative way, a bouncer claiming the cricketer insulted him and mocked two openly gay men, flicking a cigarette butt at one of them.

just two days ago, stokes was starring for his country at edgbaston, his six wickets helping england win the opening test against india. but this case has already cost one of world cricket's top talents the team's vice captaincy, and a place on last winter's ashes tour, for which he was suspended. this evening, stokes should have been preparing to play in the second test, which starts on thursday. instead, he's being ruled out, with the trial expected to last until early next week. dan roan, bbc news, bristol. the wimbledon champion angelique kerber returns to action this week for the first time since beating serena williams at the all england club last month to win her third grand slam title. the world's top players have arrived in canada for the latest warm—up tournament ahead of the us open, which gets underway in three weeks‘ time, time enough for her to have let the wimbledon win sink in. after wimbledon, i took a little bit

behind from the start and his aggressive play didn't pay off. woods dropping back and out of the running. while challengers from jason day and rory mcilroy never materialised, dustinjohnson threatened something spectacular. the world number 110 shots back from the start hit six birdies on the front nine to bring him within three, but that's as close as he would get, finishing tied third. american kyle stanley was thomas‘s closest challenger. this birdie on the 12th brought him to within two, but back—to—back bogeys straight after brought an end to his challenge. sunday in the end was all aboutjustin. a challenge. sunday in the end was all about justin. a solid challenge. sunday in the end was all aboutjustin. a solid but unspectacular round of just aboutjustin. a solid but unspectacular round ofjust one under par was all he needed. i've been knocking on the door all year, came very close in mexico and then again in matchplay. so i'd like to have some better finishes again in matchplay. so i'd like to have some betterfinishes in majors but this is as close as it gets in terms of that, so i'm very pleased

with how well i played in these events with such great fields, and to cap it off this year with this yea r‘s to cap it off this year with this year's wc, wgc feels nice. if there was ever a way to prepare for your first if there was ever a way to prepare for yourfirst major if there was ever a way to prepare for your first major title defence at the pga, that was probably the way to do it. next stop, st louis. austin halewood, bbc news. dustinjohnson is the only player above justin thomas in the world rankings, and the world number one was among those who got an early look at the course at bellerive on monday. they haven't had much rain there, you know. johnson will be looking to win his major in this week's pga championship, and to make up for missing the cut at the open championship at carnoustie last month. jordan speith's not been in form but he's one major away from having completed a career grand slam and he'd be only the sixth and the youngest were he to win this weekend. the last time we had an asian winner was 2009,

could this man, anirban lahiri, do it for india? yeah, i mean, it's been a while since i won so it's a great time to win, especially when you come out to a big event. major's obviously something all of us want to win, all of the pros, this is what we work towards, playing good in the majors and i'm excited because my game's is probably the best it's been for a while coming into this week. so, yeah, the confidence is up there, just want to get into contention on sunday afternoon and take it from there. the former indian cricket captain sachin tendulkar has launched the tendulkar middlesex global academy. he surprised 120 young cricketers and their parents by turning up to a school in london to take part in a coaching session. here's the little master with those pupils, and it's important to remember tendulkar‘s impact on the sport. his career spanned 2a years, he's the highest run scorer of all time and he played 200 tests for india. quite the cv, so what did he make of that classic opening test between england and india at

edgaston which finished on saturday? the surface was really nice, and i thought upfront, it helped the seamers. and after 40/115 minutes, once the ball had become slightly soft, then the batters got into play and score some runs. brilliant bowling by england, india, and, of course, fantastic batting by virat. the series is going to be rather interesting. but what people want to see is good quality cricket. over those three, three .5 days, nobody left their television sets. how do you feel when you watch virat kohli play? fantastic. he is someone that will leave no stone unturned if he realises there are certain aspects of the game that he needs to work on

and the results have followed i think. he's something really special to happen to indian cricket. will india change much for that second test? i don't involve myself in all those things, but i think until the third afternoon, nobody knew who was going to win the test. i would say that, you know, it was very much... if at all maybe 19, 20 difference here and there and momentum kept shifting. but i don't think one need to panic much because of a period of time i'm hoping that the batters would come into play a little more. i think if you read between the lines he is saying to keep the side as it was. that's all we've got time for. you can get all the latest sports news at our website. but from me, chris mitchell, and the rest of the sport today team, goodbye. hello there.

today we see the last of the hot and humid conditions across the south—east before it's all change by the time we reach wednesday. we'll maintain a north—west/south—east split for the next 2a hours, that's because we've got a weak weather front across northern and western areas, largely clear skies and a very warm and muggy start in the south—east, whereas further north and west, slightly fresher and there will be more cloud around, perhaps a spot of drizzle and some hill fog too. so it means for tuesday morning it starts off relatively cloudy across many northern and western areas, but the cloud tending to thin and break. sunny spells developing quite widely. will be breezier across the north—west, but again, across the south and east, another hot and sunny day. you can see the deep orange colours unfolding there into the afternoon with highs again 29 to maybe 31 degrees. further west, though, in those yellow colours, it's going to be feeling a little bit cooler. something typical for the time of year, 18 to 22 celsius. and then late on tuesday evening and overnight, we could see a cluster of thundery showers move up

from the near continent, grazing past south—east england and east anglia. bit of uncertainty as to how far westwards these will get, but it's all tied in with this weather front, which is going to continue to move its way eastwards during the course of thursday night. and then by wednesday morning, we lose the hot and humid air from the south—east and then we're all into the cooler air mass. so, for wednesday it's going to feel very different to what we've been used to, particularly in the south—east. there will be some sunshine around, but some showers as well, particularly across western areas, some of them could be heavy and thundery. and there's your temperatures, 17 to 2a celsius. a good eight degrees lower in the south—east than what we've been used to on monday and tuesday. on into thursday then, most of the showers will be across the north—west corner of the country. sunny spells elsewhere, but there is a chance of some thundery rain moving up from the near continent, again grazing the south—east. but it could stay over the near continent, south—east could stay dry.

and again, temperatures around the seasonal average but feeling cooler than what we've been used to. friday not a bad looking day, largely dry. some showers in the north. but then later on in the day, the skies are going to cloud over across western areas with increasing breeze ahead of a weather system. now, this is something we haven't seen much of during the summer period, but it looks like it's going to be quite a vigorous area of low pressure hurtling in across our shores just in time for the weekend. it could deliver a spell of pretty heavy rain at times, and also strong winds. could be touching gale force. so saturday's looking very unsettled with wet and windy weather moving through. for sunday, though, a little bit brighter with sunshine and showers, but it's going to feel much cooler over the weekend. welcome to bbc news, broadcasting to viewers in north america and around the globe. my name is mike embley. our top stories: with the united states out of the international nuclear deal with iran, now president trump is re—imposing sanctions. at the trial of donald trump's former campaign chairman — a key witness testifies that he helped paul manafort submit false tax returns.
