and world number one simona halep wins the canadian open in montreal, beating sloane stephens in three sets. hello and welcome to the programme, where we start with the golfing news that american brooks koepka has won his second major of the year and third in m months, by claiming the 100th us pga championship in missouri by two strokes. after a shaky first five holes for the world number four, that included two bogeys, he regained his composure, showing great consistency both off the tee and to the greens. but he was pushed all the way by adam scott and 14—time major winner tiger woods, who was in the running until he fell apart on the penultimate hole. and the 28—year—old from florida held his nerve to finish on 16—under and cement his place as arguably this year's premier player, as he lifted the wanamaker trophy. this was an extraordinary victory for brooks koepka, his third in a major in the last 1a months. he becomes only the fifth player to win the us open and now the pga championship in the same year, and he did it with a nerveless display coming down the stretch. just as other players were starting to

wobble, he had to withstand a sensational charge from tiger woods and a spirited challenge from adam scott. in the end, rookes koepka shot a round of 66. a par at the last gave him a victory after having come into the round with a 2—stroke advantage, converting that into the trophy and his third major victory. that doesn't really tell the story of the day. tiger woods put together a round of 64, capping it with a birdie at the last. he wasn't able to birdie the penultimate hole, and asa to birdie the penultimate hole, and as a result, that was the moment that the prospect of a 15th tiger woods major victory slipped from his grasp. nevertheless, he got a birdie at the last, frenzied scenes, and he finished in second place, two shots behind. there is no doubt that the current contemporary superstar as far as golf is concerned is a chap by the name of brooks koepka. now to the footballing news that

manchester city have got their premier league title defence off to a winning start with a 2—0 victory at arsenal on sunday, in what was a miserable start for gunners‘ new boss unai emery. city are regarded as strong favourites to be the first team to win back—to—back premier league titles for the first time since 2009, and won in north london thanks to goals from raheem sterling and bernardo silva. neither team was at full strength, but pep guardiola's side looked pretty comfortable throughout, although arsenal have a few questions to answer under their new boss. in general, we make an excellent performance counting in the moment of the season that we are, with a lot of players with a lack of condition in terms of physicality. but of course, we are more than two seasons together, and we know more or less what we have to do in different parts. we were aggressive in the middle, and the back, so we made a good performance in general.
1:48 am
we wanted to start here, with our first match, with a very good ambience here, and also we wanted to show our performance. but it is clear against manchester city today, we cannot give them this win. but i think here we are going to feel we didn't do as much. liverpool's 4—0 win over west ham was the biggest of the opening weekend. after his 44 goals last season, mo salah took less than 20 minutes to get his first of this campaign. sadio mane was another familiar face that scored the next two goals, and daniel sturridge got the fourth immediately after coming on as a substitute, to leave jurgen klopp‘s side top of the league on goal difference. we played as good as possible today. we played as good as possible today. we extended a really good preseason into the premier league season, so

thatis into the premier league season, so that is what is actually the plan, because it is not finished. for a lot of the players, we still have to prepare for the rest of the season. so it was good. not surprisingly good, but of course, it was better than i could have expected. there was one other game in the premier league on sunday, with southampton and burnley playing out a goalless draw on the south coast. a hat—trick from robert lewandowski helped bayern munich retain the german super cup in a 5—0 rout of eintracht frankfurt on sunday. the polish striker scored two first—half headers to put bayern in firm control of the game. his third goal, struck from the edge of the box, put further pressure on eintracht frankfurt to respond. but they couldn't find the back of the net, and two more from kingsley coman and thiago alcantara put the match out of reach. to cricket, where england have gone 2—0 up in the test series with india, after a comprehensive victory in the second match at lord's on sunday. the home side declared on day four with a first—innings lead of 289, and that proved more than enough
1:50 am
on another rain—interrupted day. india struggled again in the conditions, and were bowled out for 130 in their second innings, giving england victory by an innings and 159 runs. we have still not played the perfect performance yet, and that is something that we've got to keep striving towards. regardless of what tea m striving towards. regardless of what team india have out on the field at trent bridge, we've got a place we wa nt to trent bridge, we've got a place we want to get to as a side, and we've got to continue to keep trying to work hard to get there. it's obviously a great position to be in, to have an zero going into trent bridge, where we have had a lot of success bridge, where we have had a lot of success in the past. but ultimately we've still got to play five days of really good cricket to win that game. we've definitely got to accept what we did wrong. there is no hiding from the fact that mistakes happen. we have to accept those, put

them on the side, learn from them, and make sure that we are not thinking about the same mistakes again. rather be more confident and get ahead of the mistake and not repeat it again. that is our focus heading into the next game, certainly not thinking of anything else but to go to— one in the series, and from thereon, build on that strongly. this is the first time in the last five tests we have been really outplayed —— 2—1 in the series. world number one rafael nadal has beaten greece's stefanos tsitsipas in straight sets to win the toronto masters. tsitsipas was celebrating his 20th birthday, but the spaniard was in no mood to be giving, as he rattled through the first set, before being taken to a tie—breaker in the second, but secured a 6—2, 7—6 victory for his fourth crown at this event, and 80th atp tour title overall. probably is not the week that i played better tennis, but the spirit of competition has been fantastic. and today was probably my best sets,
1:52 am
especially in that first set, i played good tennis. i have the title. that means a lot to me. it is a great standard with a season like this. with a fortnight until the us open gets underway, defending champion sloane stephens lost the canadian open final to world number one simona halep. romanian halep took the opening set in a tie—break, when stephens looked set to clinch it. but the american struck back to claim the second. but stephens faded in the deciding set, and the world number one went on to take it by 6—4. the european athletics championships finished in berlin on sunday, with great britain finishing in a blaze of gold glory thanks to their respective men's and women's 4x100m relay teams, as they also topped the medal count there. watching in the german capital was ade adedoyin. well, britain's sprinters dazzled on the final night of athletics here in the final night of athletics here in the olympic stadium. dina asher—smith anchored the four x 100 metre relay team to gold. she

finished about three metres ahead. with three gold medals here, only the third woman at european history to do that at these championships. the men also claimed gold despite a late change to their lineup. blake picked up an injury, and the victory was never in doubt. gold for britain ina was never in doubt. gold for britain in a world leading time. real drama in the women's 5000 metres. hasan got into a sprint with the israeli contender in the penultimate lap. she stopped running and it effectively cost her a medal, hassan claiming the victory. the polevault winner was only 18 years old, a new junior record. the former world champion had to settle for bronze and another former olympic champion rolled back the years to claim gold in the triple jump. jorge lorenzo has won the austrian motogp to take his

third victory this season, finishing ahead of his spanish compatriot marc marquez, who managed to increase his championship lead to 59 points. the two riders traded the lead in the final laps before ducati's lorenzo stormed to victory, climbing from fifth to third in the championship. italy's andrea dovizioso finished third, while british rider cal crutchlow was in fourth place. but lorenzo, who moves to honda next season, was too good for the rest in spielberg... in the last lap, i wasn't expecting on outside. risking so much on the breaking, but i did it, and it is one of my best victories. talking of victories, brooks koepka has won the us pga championship, finishing at 16 under. until next time, it is goodbye for now. hello, it's been a fairly unsettled weekend.

outbreaks of rain have given way to some heavy and in places thundery showers, which will continue to work their way eastwards through the early hours of monday morning. all down to this area of low pressure, which, come first thing monday morning, still lingers along the eastern coasts of england and scotland, still generating some showers. and, for most, it is a day of a few sunny spells and a scattering of showers. and, if you catch one of those, it could still be heavy and thundery. let's look at 4:00pm in the afternoon in a little bit more detail. a fair amount of sunshine across much of england and wales, more than we saw on sunday. but notice these blobs of blue and green, just giving an indication there will still be some showers pushing their way from west to east, maybe thunder or lightning. fewer showers for northern ireland, mainly dry here. some breaks in the cloud to give some bright and sunny spells. a few breaks in the cloud for murray and aberdeenshire, but generally for much of scotland,

a lot of cloud, some outbreaks of rain, which will gradually ease through the day. once again, the best of the sunshine will be for shetland. temperatures for scotland on monday, 15—19 celsius. 20 in northern ireland, and 20—24 for england and wales, in the best of the sunshine. we'll still keep a few showers going through monday evening and overnight into tuesday, particularly for eastern counties of england. still keeping that zone of cloud across much of scotland, extending its way northwards into orkney and shetland. some showery rain arriving into northern ireland through the early hours of tuesday morning. it won't be a cold night, lows between 11 and 15 celsius. starting to feel quite warm and muggy again for south—eastern parts of england. and it's a real north—west, south—east split as we go into tuesday, north—western areas closer to the front bringing our press of rain. south and east, close to the area of high pressure, so keeping things dry and settled, with a good deal of sunshine across central, eastern and southern england. but starting to see a noticeable breeze across northern ireland, scotland, northern england,

some outbreaks of showery rain working their way eastwards on tuesday. so a cooler feel in this zone of cloud and rain, high teens, compared to 24, 25, maybe even 26 for east anglia and south—east england. a similar sort of day on wednesday, except the rain is a little bit more persistent, and wind will be quite strong, particularly gusty for western coasts. further south and east, it is dry with sunshine and still feeling very warm. not for much longer, though, because on thursday that band of rain will slip its way south and eastwards, and slowly introduce some fresher conditions across england and wales. so we're all in the fresher conditions on friday, with a mixture of sunshine and showers. so, to sum up the week, it'll be windy at times, there'll be some showers or longer spells of rain, warmest and driest in the south and east. bye— bye. welcome to bbc news, broadcasting to viewers in north america and around the globe. my name is nkem ifejika. our top stories: tight security in washington, as anti—fascist demonstrators
