and britain's most successful long jumper talks to us about his upcoming retirement. i'm greg rutherford and join me later on sports day. hello and welcome to sportsday. thanks forjoining us. we'll start with football and the fallout from celtic‘s champions league defeat last night. the 2—1 loss in athens to aek means they miss out on a financial windfall and the result could also have ramifications for scottish football as a whole. our reporterjoe lynskey explains why. azi thank you, and owen coyle the former burnley manager is with us to reflect on a huge setback for the scottish champions. it wasn't so long ago that celtic
6:33 pm
were beating the likes of barcelona in the champions league in front of incredible atmospheres at their home of celtic park. this year though they know now they won't be playing in europe's premier competition. and after a 3—2 aggregate defeat to the greek champions aek athens. it's a defeat that could cost them up to £40 million. think all you spent much of your playing career in the scottish domestic league. tell us what the result will mean to celtic and scottish football. for celtic the past couple of years they have been in the group stages where an elite clu b in the group stages where an elite club will feel is the right place. it isa club will feel is the right place. it is a setback for themselves and scottish football because the coefficient celtic have gathered in the group stages, if they build on that there was a possibility they
6:34 pm
would have had an automatic place in the group stages in a few years. but four qualifying rounds has made it tough and not only do celtic suffer but all scottish football because the coefficient drops. most of the other teams have relied on celtic to be the flag bearer which is why the result does not help anybody. to explain to some viewers, celtic started the champions league campaign back on the 10th ofjuly against armenian opposition. it was a lwa ys against armenian opposition. it was always going to be difficult with four rounds in total and they only got to three to get to the champions league proper. does that give you sympathy for the players? absolutely. the previous years there have been three qualifiers. initially it was four. the champions route is for smaller nations. as you mention, starting so early. only two

weeks pre—season training under their belts. it was difficult. the size of the champions league. even last night they did not play badly. they were the better team but did not take their chances and they were soft goals. but that is the fallout 110w. soft goals. but that is the fallout now. it is a blow for celtic. we can hear from now. it is a blow for celtic. we can hearfrom their now. it is a blow for celtic. we can hear from their manager brendan rodgers. we're not getting opened up and fantastic goals scored against us. it is concentration and basic defending. it is hard to get your head around but we have to do is go away and work with the players we have, try to improve and try to make them better. you should not have to to lose to learn but when you lose you have to learn. such disappointment from him. we can
6:36 pm
hear more from him now. he said it's not rocket science. you have to always guard against becoming complacent and the way you do that is by adding to the squad. there's players that we've kept, but obviously getting other players in. it's been plain sailing up to this point — he's won the domestic treble both seasons in charge, but what will this result mean for him? i think you will be as disappointed as anybody, he said such a high standard. the first season, the principles, domestically they have carried all before them and the next pa rt carried all before them and the next part is the progress in europe. they got to group stages last year and came up against psg and wonderful teams. and some not great results. so they look to improve on that but 110w so they look to improve on that but now they do not get the opportunity. knowing him as i do, they will pick themselves up, and look again to win domestically. it is a disappointment
6:37 pm
for everybody. these are the club badges, not familiar to you or i. the two sides, one celtic will play in the qualifying play—off for the europa league. fk suduva or spartaks jurmala of latvia. it is not madrid 01’ jurmala of latvia. it is not madrid or munich. there is no easy game in europe these days that you would expect celtic to take care of either of that opposition. they still want european football and celtic fans have grown—up used a big nights at celtic park. that is another challenge. it is not barcelona and psg so to lift yourself for these games, that is what they have to do is professional players and they still want european football. and they have a derby match with rangers managed by steven gerrard. plenty more reaction in five live sport on
