london's and frankfurt ended the day. and in the the united states this is how the dow and the nasdaq are getting on. a mixed bag of fortunes. trading still going on of course over the states. —— in their out—mac states. almost film review time, but first a look ahead to sportsday. sportsday at 6:30pm brings you all the day's sportsday sports news as jose mourinho denies rift with his star man paul pogba. in cricket ben stokes returns for england, named for the third test against india at trent bridge tomorrow. his captain joe root has called it, though, the toughest call he has had to make a skipper. we also have the latest from belfast as both carl frampton and tyson fury prepare to perform in front of a big crowd at windsor park. all coming up in sportsday at 6:30pm but here on bbc news it is time for the film review... hello and welcome to
5:46 pm
the film review on bbc news. to take us through this week's cinema releases is jason solomons. what have you been watching? hi, jane. this week, and update you when mcgregor gets a surprise visit from some familiar, furry flying friends. more to come in disney's christopher robin. a love letter from more to come in disney's christopher robin. a love letterfrom one film—maker to another, as mark cousins addresses his hero orson welles in a documentary called the eyes of orson welles, which is inspired by finding a treasure trove of his never before seen sketches and drawings. and the boss is back in time for the football. denzel washington pops up with the equaliser too. he is on a vengeful mission, and you don't want to get in his way. i wouldn't argue

with him! starting with christopher robin. only at p&g, and i am fascinated about whether this is really children's film. what is this --? really children's film. what is this ——? only eight pg. really children's film. what is this --? only eight pg. ijust came from a screening, children there with their merchandise, thinking, great, iam going their merchandise, thinking, great, i am going see a winnie—the—pooh movie. they are not. what they will see is very cute. he is famously a bear of little brain but a very big heart. this is ewan mcgregor as an aduu heart. this is ewan mcgregor as an adult christopher robin, though i stress not the real christopher robin, referring to a film earlier this year about the real—life christopher robin had. this one is miserable, working in post—war london for a luggage firm, too much work on his plate, can't spend enough time with his wife, and his child, played by the wonderfully deliberate wonderful child british actress, very posh, but very beatable. very stressed out and can't work out what is happening at work, gets a visit from a childhood friend, which might make him later
5:48 pm
not for the weekend... —— might make him lighten up for the weekend. 0h. what to do, what to do, what to do... what to do indeed. pooh? christopher robin. no! no, no, no... you can't be here. mm. this can't be happening. the stress. it's not stress. god, i'm stressed. it's pooh. i'm so exhausted. madelaine warned me! i like to be warmed. warmed and cosy. i've cracked! i've totally cracked. i don't see any cracks. a few wrinkles... is that pooh with an american
5:49 pm
accent? am i misreading that? he a lwa ys accent? am i misreading that? he always has an american accent, the famous actor, jim cummings, who does pooh and tigger as well, you remember tigger? has wonderful song? and it is a bit strong, and also eeyore has an american accent, and if you remember that film with mark wahlberg, ted, with the swearing and everything, that is kind ofan swearing and everything, that is kind of an american version... and here, the party on the train, as the animals come to london to try to make her father have a nice time to remember the childish things he had put away when he was so very young, and we get that in disney movies, in films like elf, where the father has to remember what it was like to be young. we want this to be as good as
5:50 pm
paddington, that's the trouble, which was so brilliant. yes, an influx of furriness on the streets of london right now. this isn't paddington. a lot of nods to paddington, and even apart for some of the people who were in that, some voices cast, the voice of rabbit here. it is very strange. i thought it was rather sweet and kind of worked but it is a very odd concoction and i also have no idea who it is for, because it isn't really for kids, it is for grown—up kids who can't put away childish things, which very much strikes me as disney's core audience right now because they are the ones doing superheroes and star wars, for that age group as well, trying to remember what it was like to be young. it sounds like a curious mixture. curioser and curioser. and you're bringing a documentary as well? yes, mixing things up. this one is forfilm well? yes, mixing things up. this one is for film fans. citizen well? yes, mixing things up. this one is forfilm fans. citizen kane was voted the number one film six decades in a row, the best film ever made. orson welles often cited as the best film—maker ever. certainly
5:51 pm
in terms of images. mark cousins, a well—known film historian, who worked at the bbc, he discovered a treasure trove of orson welles‘ sketches and he got them out and realised what we see in the sketches often translated into his films, touch of evil, which we are seeing here which starred a great orson welles performance. beautiful love letter to cinema. it is also very pretentious, which is what you want from mark cousins, i wouldn‘t want it any other way! very easily derick, but you also learn a lot about what cinema can do, how it connects to the world, what it can do, the shapes that can trigger —— it is very esoteric. we often say that the eyes are the keys to the soul, but here you see the painting on the keys to orson welles pot‘ visual soul. he famously never finished films, orson welles and a lwa ys finished films, orson welles and always arguing with the studios about money. what would he have made an estimate of the internet and the free technology we have? he might
5:52 pm
have ended up finishing films. it is fascinating and absolutely beautiful andi fascinating and absolutely beautiful and i loved every second, but again it is not for everyone. all right. is this for everyone, the equalizer 2? dear member the first one? i am not good with violence so thinking this is not really my territory! —— do you remember the first one? the first one, i read very little about it except that he worked in the american equivalent of bm). so the now has a job driving the american equivalent of uber, in boston, ferrying people around, but he also kind of rights wrongs, he is indeed the equalizer. uae deliberately is taking some revenge and raft out on some arrogant bankers who have mistreated his client —— here he is deliberately taking some revenge and
5:53 pm
wrath out on some arrogant bankers. how you doing? i'm the, ah, lift driver that you called to take home your girlfriend. not a girlfriend, man. 0h. credit card wasn‘t valid. come in. there you go. mm. pay yourself whatever, and give yourself a nice tip. thank you. you're not going to ask me if she got home ok? this is the point where usually i'd give you a chance to do the right thing — but not tonight. tonight i'm going to need your cameras, cellphones, anything you might have used to record what you did to her. you knocked on the wrong door tonight, pops. come here. 0k, ok, so that‘s the general gist? he does that a lot? a lot, and he's very good at it. he is 63, denzel

washington, and i don‘t know why he does it. the central plot is to do with his cia... of course he is a former cia assassin working as a taxi driver. he comes out of retirement to help her and track down why she has been killed, and it goes right to the top, one of those conspiracies, except it doesn‘t and ends up in a hurricane, she gets killed, and of course, who killed her? ends up on the coast, for no reason at all. that said, it has denzel washington been really cool all the way through, so i sort of like that film about denzel washington. not his best, but still denzel. best out, you have chosen a film which made me feel about 95! laughter me do, i have to say. this has been out a week and it came out on tuesday, unusually, because it is an unusual film. tuesday, unusually, because it is an unusualfilm. a tuesday, unusually, because it is an unusual film. a little tuesday, unusually, because it is an unusualfilm. a little indie british comedy from the makers of the

in—betweeners. and i think you could call it in—tense. see what i did there? makes me realise i would never want to cap the festival. much asi never want to cap the festival. much as i love music, there is a line. yes, very messy, and you need to be of the right age group, which sometimes, guilty, iam. of the right age group, which sometimes, guilty, iami of the right age group, which sometimes, guilty, i am. iwas not all of the 19—year—old men i went to the screening with were loving it. that is enough. and very nicely acted, choosing the positives. and dvd... if you're not going out to a tent or a festival, dvd, emily blunt, ina tent or a festival, dvd, emily blunt, in a quiet place. post—apocalyptic film where if you make a sound that aliens who have invaded will come for you so you have to be quiet and not say a word and get through it. her and her family sort of get through it. will they, when the? she is also pregnant, giving birth, not something you want to do when there are aliens around —— will they,
5:56 pm
won‘t they? are aliens around —— will they, won't they? everybody i know who has seen won't they? everybody i know who has seen it said it was absolutely gripping. yes, you canjust seen it said it was absolutely gripping. yes, you can just about survive it. you have been warned! thank you very much. lovely to see you, jason, and that is it for this week. whatever you choose to watch, whatever you are brave enough for, have a good week. enjoy your cinema going. goodbye. hello there. a great disappointing day across many parts of the country but the south and east did see some good spells of sunshine, and a bit warmer than yesterday. the rain across western areas will continue to peter out this evening and overnight front will continue to struggle central scotland, northern ireland and the far north and north—west of england. one automatic showers and dry spells across much of england and wales but apart from that it should be a dry night and much more mild than last night. for the weekend, definitely a story of
5:57 pm
two halves. quite dry and humid and sunday, some rain at times. the picture across england and wales sos show some cloud around. the best of the weather across the east. we will continue to see this front bringing further outbreaks of rain the central and southern scotland as well as northern ireland. temperatures higher across the board certainly for england and wales, and more humid feel. in the mid—20s celsius. more rain and thicker cloud on sunday, quite windy for england and wales. warmer in the south and a lot of that continues across southern areas right into next week. the government is urged to relax the rules on vaping and allow e—cigarettes in more public places. mps say they‘re the best way to quit smoking, but some argue e—cigarettes may still be harmful. we do have to be careful about their long term use. so they‘re safer than cigarettes, but we can‘t absolutely say that they are safe. with nearly three million users in the uk, we‘ll take a look
5:58 pm
at the pros and cons of vaping. also on the programme... surviving the worst monsoon rains in almost a century. close to a thousand people have already died in india. the prisons minister puts hisjob on the line, saying he‘ll quit if he doesn‘t cut violence in some of the toughest jails. don‘t hold the pasta — research says carb—cutting diets can also cut life expectancy by four years.
