9:00 pm
this is bbc world news today. i'm lewis vaughan jones. our top stories... president trump says progress with denuclearisation in north korea is too slow and cancels a planned trip there for his top diplomat. hawaii is hit by torrential rain, flooding, and landslides as it feels the effects of an approaching hurricane. hawaii is going to be impacted by hurricane lane, the question is how bad? ireland gets ready to welcome pope francis this weekend — for the first papal visit to the country in a0 years. hello and welcome to world news today. president trump has cancelled a planned trip to north korea by his secretary of state, saying progress toward the us goal of de—nuclearising the korean peninsula was too slow. he tweeted: ‘i have asked secretary
9:01 pm
of state mike pompeo not to go to north korea, at this time, because i feel we are not making sufficient progress‘. ‘additionally, because of our much tougher trading stance with china, i do not believe they are helping with the process of denuclearization as they once were‘. he then tweeted ‘secretary pompeo looks forward to going to north korea in the nearfuture, most likely after our trading relationship with china is resolved. in the meantime i would like to send my warmest regards and respect to chairman kim. i look forward to seeing him soon! here‘s chris buckler with more. contradictory messages, i suppose, coming from donald trump, that he has in the past said that north korea no longer poses a nuclear threat and even in recent interviews, has been suggesting that specific steps have been moved towards denuclearisation. the suggestion is, which does chime, a lot more with those intelligence assessments that north korea is not making concrete steps towards getting rid of its nuclear weapons, which is fundamentally
9:02 pm
what america means when it talks about denuclearisation. there are some who believe that that trip by mike pompeo was, perhaps, a little premature, that perhaps significant progress has not been made at this stage, but of course there will be those that argue that they need to keep on talking. nonetheless, the interesting thing from what you just read there was the idea that he was really pointing the finger of blame at china, saying that they are not doing enough to help, and with their trading row and all these tit—for—tat tariffs that are going on. at the same time, you had donald trump specifically sending a warm message to kimjung—un. it gives you an idea that he believes that the key is in that relationship between the president and the north korean leader and he does not want to jeopardise that for anything. so, do you think this is a case of donald trump bargaining in his usual deal making or did he overplay his hand and overstate how much progress was being made? i think probably both is true.
9:03 pm
the truth is that donald trump is never subtle when it comes to negotiations and very often he believes the best way is to go out and shout very loudly. i was at an event recently with donald trumpjunior, his son, in which he talked about the kind of blistering way that he had got north korea to the table and he said, as a son, i understand that is exactly what my father is like, that is the way he negotiates. there is a loud, there is a bellicose way in the way that he approaches things like this and i think, ultimately, there is an element of negotiation in this. at the same time, though, donald trump also likes to boast about the successes that he has had and certainly he has been making a lot out of how far he has got in the north korean negotiations and i think this is probably an indication that the truth is that he probably has not achieved as much and bear in mind it is only a matter of months, but certainly in those months, he has not achieved as much as sometimes he has suggested. chris, there is another story coming
9:04 pm
out of washington at the moment about the trump organisation‘s chief financial officer being granted immunity, tell us about this. yeah, this is a man called allen weisselberg, he is not somebody who will immediately be known to a lot of people watching this, but he is incredibly important in terms of the trump organisation. as you mentioned there, he was the chief financial officer but he is also someone who is incredibly trusted by donald trump. in reality, apart from five family members, it is very difficult to think of anybody more senior in terms of that business organisation that donald trump has of course been connected to. but, he has been given immunity to give some kind of information according to multiple reports here in the us media. now, the suggestion is that this is connected to michael cohen‘s pleading guilty earlier this week on charges of breaking campaign finance violations,
9:05 pm
essentially making payments to try and stop two women talking about their alleged affairs with donald trump. now it seems that there has now been a deal that has taken place between allen weisselberg and federal prosecutors of some description that will see him give some information, but we don‘t know what information he will give and we don‘t know the details of the deal. nonetheless, it is yet another thing this week in which donald trump has been under huge scrutiny and huge pressure, were again we are seeing questions being asked and the spotlight very firmly on the president. chris butler in washington. hawaii has been hit with strong winds and torrential rain as a weakening hurricane lane approaches the us state. it‘s caused flash floods and landslides — schools and offices have been closed as people take shelter. the eye of the category two storm is still about 300 kilometres

away in the pacific. james cook reports. this is what hurricane lane has done to hawaii already. and it is still churning towards the islands. so far, it is not the ferocious wind but the torrential rain which is the biggest problem. there are reports of catastrophic flooding, of landslides and of water rescues. tourists among those who have been pulled to safety. attention, attention. the beaches are closed. please leave the area. the big island in hawaii, hawaii county, has received in some cases some reports of two feet of rain already. unfortunately, there is more to come. the impacts are going to grow. the real question is, when does it start to make it's turn to the west? if it drifts further north, that means we are going to see storm surge, greater wind impacts as well as increased rainfall. hundreds of islanders have been
9:07 pm
forced to flee their homes. have you ever done this before? no, this is the first time. across the state, dozens of evacuation centres have been set up. major hurricanes are rare on hawaii and as the storm approached, many people heeded the dire warnings, stocking up on food and water as a state of emergency was declared. we have the federal state, all of the counties here to make sure we are protecting the health, safety and welfare of all of our people, including by the way some close to 300,000 tourists who are in the state right now. these pictures from the international space station show the hurricane as it approached the island earlier this week. the beaches are now closed, and nothing was going to stop these hurricane lane has now slowed to a

crawl and that is a concern... hurricane lane has slowed to a crawl as it approaches us and that is a concern because it means the heavy rain and flooding could continue for days. but for now, it‘s not spray which fills the air, but smoke from the wildfire, just another challenge for an island chain which rarely experiences storms of this ferocity. the beaches are now closed, but nothing was going to stop these surfers from seeking the ultimate thrill of catching a wave on the edge of a hurricane. james cook, bbc news. the united nations aid says that twenty—two children and four women have been killed in yemen by an air strike by the saudi—led coalition. un aid chief mark lowcock says they were killed on thursday as they were trying to flee fighting in and around the key port city of hudaida. he said that another air strike in the same area resulted in the deaths of four more children.
9:09 pm
earlier this month, a coalition strike hit a bus in the north of yemen controlled by the houthis, killing forty children. mr lowcock has called for an impartial, independent and prompt investigation into the incidents. let‘s take a look at some of the other stories making the news... us republican senatorjohn mccain will no longer be continuing treatment for his brain cancer, his family has announced. mr mccain was diagnosed with an aggressive form of the disease last summer and had been undergoing treatment since. he left washington to be with his family in arizona, though he has still been a vocal political figure. president emmerson mnangagwa‘s win in last month‘s polls has been upheld by zimbabwe‘s constitutional court. the opposition mdc alliance had brought the legal challenge, saying the vote was fraudulent, but this was rejected by the court. it was zimbabwe‘s first election since robert mugabe was ousted from power last year. spain has taken another

9:11 pm
to welcome pope francis, it is also hosting this global gathering of catholics. an alter has been built along the touchline, but that is as nothing compared to the challenge of reconstructing the church after decades of scandal. a lot of the pain and the hurt that we felt we were moving on from has resurfaced, particularly for people who were hurt by the clergy in the church. and i think the holy father, it‘s critical that he does something to try and address that. phoenix park, another venue, has been under construction for months. the catholic church and the irish government are spending more than £27 million to host pope francis. the highlight of this weekend‘s visit will be here on sunday when pope francis celebrates mass. 500,000 tickets have been issued. so, will ireland feel like it did the last time the pope was in town?

1979, and popejohn paul ii was greeted by the largest gathering of irish people in history. back then almost 90% of catholics attended weekly mass, contraception, abortion and divorce were against the law. now all three are legal and church attendance is down to a0%. marie collins‘ story may help explain why. she was abused by a hospital chaplain as a child. what has happened here basically is the church has fallen over a cliff. its moral authority is completely destroyed. we still have quite a high percentage of catholics in ireland and i think many of them are hanging on by theirfingernails. are you glad that the church is having less of a dominant effect?
9:13 pm
the short answer is yes. i think in the past the catholic church had too much of a dominant place in irish society. i think it still has a place in irish society, but not one that determines public policy or determines our laws. judging by trade in the exhibition hall, the catholic church is pinning its hopes on the popularity of pope francis. this is the best one. he remains the star attraction. but unless it can convince the world that it has changed, then the future of the roman catholic church in ireland will continue to be overshadowed by its past. martin bashir, bbc news, dublin. stay with us on bbc world news, still to come. two of the biggest youtube stars take their rivalry to the boxing ring —
