' which which is 'which is done at noon. in rome, it is done at noon. we are doing it slightly earlier because of the schedule in knock. he is probably here meeting a lot of the people who volunteered to work in knock. there is someone in a wheelchair there, symbolising the important ministry of care for the disabled and sick in knock. they have come here not always expecting that they will be healed but get inner strength and resilience. this is such an important work for pope francis, accompanying people. speaking yesterday at the shelter for the homeless, he really made a strong statement. the only one he has made so far to priests accompanying people in their vulnerability. be there for them and don't put impossible demands on people. and the crowd that was cheering a few minutes ago now standing very solemnly. as they wait for the pope
10:31 am
to re—emerge from the church of the apparition. the questions you were talking about a few minutes ago, pa rt talking about a few minutes ago, part of the criticism of the catholic church in recent years and the scandals that have beset it has been that the church hasn't been asking enough questions of itself, perhaps. that has been a fair criticism, hasn't it? it has been a fair criticism and what pope francis calls the biggest enemy within the church is clericalism. this is a sense of self protection, protection of the officeholders in the church. it can happen to other organisations as well, we know that, but pope francis is trying to break it down by saying the most important people in the church are the people. it is
10:32 am
a bit like the chess club, where the only people who are important are the chairman and the treasury, not the chairman and the treasury, not the people actually playing chess. and as pope francis returns to rome today, there are going to be people, from abuse survivors to theologians like yourself, senior clergy and so on, sitting back and analysing the entirety of this visit, what has been said, what has been achieved, i am sure the pope will be doing that himself and those around him in the vatican. in terms of the dissection of the visit in ireland and looking at it so far, what do you think has been achieved? for the people who have met pope francis, they will remember his words. hopefully the wonderful words that he has spoken
10:33 am
in his speeches, they will not get lost. calling for a deeper personal faith and greater service of your neighbour. i hope those words would be lost. but for the aftermath and the sense of the institution, i think people will step back and say, what more do we need to do to ensure those who have suffered he must sexual violence within church structures can find justice and be cared for. and for those survivors of abuse, the young women who were in the mandolin laundries, unmarried mothers and so on, for people who don't feel they got what they wanted from these visit, how is the church going to reach out to them?” honestly don't know how that will be done. i hope it will be done because it is very important. there are processes already in place, support services already in place. bishops conference and so on in ireland. i
10:34 am
think the answer to that question is continuing to listen, greater listening, and let people in the situations themselves to tell us what they actually need. they need to be listened to to be heard. and there is not an infinite amount of time for the church to get this right and to satisfy these people, is there, because there have been investigations, reviews, reports, commissions going on for ten years oi’ commissions going on for ten years or more now, almost ten years, into the things going on in ireland. either people say the church is going in the right direction or it isn't. that's true. a lot of these reports are ongoing and they are in the hands of the state. the church can't determine when they will conclude. one is overdue since last february. i should also say that there is a shared responsibility yet, it is not only the responsibility of the church, it is
10:35 am
also the responsibility of the state. i think that needs to be borne in mind as well. father eamon conway, thank you very much. and as we watch pope francis emerge from the church in knock to lead prayers and deliver a short speech outside, we will say goodbye to you from dublin. so there is the scene life in knock, with the pope is about to lead the prayers and make that address. this is the first papal visit, as we have
10:36 am
been hearing, to the republic of ireland for almost a0 years. but a visit that has been overshadowed to some extent by the scandal of clerical abuse and cover—ups. later on, the pope is going to be in dublin and they will be full coverage of that throughout the day, but for now he is in knock in county mayo. we are going to be hearing from him injust a moment. good morning. applause translation: i am

10:41 am
none of us can fail to be moved by the stories of young people who suffered abuse. they were robbed of their innocence. they were left with painful memories. this open wound challenges us to be firm in the pursuit of truth and justice.

they sing you are watching our continuing coverage in the uk and around the world of pope francis's visit to ireland. his trip to the shrine of knock in county mayo in the west of ireland. it is coming to a conclusion now. many thousands of people there to listen to post francis today —— pope francis today,
10:47 am
and in the speech he gave in the last few minutes, he said he prayed for god's forgiveness for the open wounds of abuse and said they would be firm and decisive action to secure truth and justice. and my guess, father eamon conway, is still with me. that is a very significant line in terms of anything we have heard from pope francis on this trip so heard from pope francis on this trip so far. so many of the other speeches have had so many other things in them but these lines have really stood out. the words are very clear. they are also acknowledging that these are open wounds and the pain continues for so many people. more needs to be done to bring about the ealing not just
10:48 am
more needs to be done to bring about the ealing notjust of the trail of trust and the sexual violence but also the way the structure did not respond or cake compassionately, believing —— care compassionately, believing —— care compassionately, believing people when they came forward. it will be very interesting to get the reaction of abuse survivors to these specific words. they have been calling for action and while this doesn't set up any specific steps, it does seem like a commitment, doesn't it? these are not the context in which you are going to set out specific steps. theseis going to set out specific steps. these is the context of prayer. but ido these is the context of prayer. but i do believe pope francis will go away from her and put those things in place. so as we watch these images from knock interesting to note that the pope also mention, in his words, a warm greeting to the beloveds people of northern ireland.
10:49 am
that has been mentioned a few times on this trip. could he make a further trip back to the island of ireland, which would include a trip back north of the border. from knock he will get back on the plane that will take him back to dublin and a mass in a few hours' time, later on this afternoon, which will conclude the official reason for his visit, his presence at the world meeting of families. we will continue our coverage of pope francis's visit to ireland on bbc news. the weather is going downhill for most of us this morning and this
