hello, i'm chetan pathak and this is sport today, live from the bbc sport centre. coming up on this programme: a late winner at newcastle ensures chelsea's 100% start to the season continues. a huge crash in the belgian grand prix, but sebastian vettel steers clear of the pile—up to win and close the gap on lewis hamilton. and american bryson dechambeau leads the fedex cup playoffs after winning the northern trust in newjersey. thanks forjoining us on sport today. it wasn't easy, but chelsea maintained their 100% start to the premier league season with a 2—1 victory over newcastle at st james‘s park, to the delight of new boss maurizio sarri. eden hazard's penalty and a yedlin own—goal three minutes from time was enough to overcome newcastle and their five—man defence.
1:46 am
rafa's benitez‘s tactics proved suprising for the chelsea manager it's very difficult to play here, for every team, not only for us. it was difficult. after the 1—1, i think we were a bit unlucky in the action around the goal. but we knew that here it's very difficult for every team, but i think especially for us. fulham picked up their first win since promotion by beating burnley 4—2, aleksandar mitrovic scoring twice at craven cottage. and chelsea aren't the only side to make it three wins from three on sunday. watford beat crystal palace 2—1 at vicarage road, and are up to third. i think there is no secret.
1:47 am
the most important is to work hard, because the players, i think they have done outstanding work from pre—season, and now they are getting good results. we have a good atmosphere, and playing at home, we feel comfortable with the support of ourfans, and we'll see, the next games. real madrid made it back—to—back wins at the start of the la liga season after coming from a goal down to win 4—1 at girona, karim benzema scoring twice. sevilla—villarreal finished goalless, whilst espanyol beat valencia 2—0. meanwhile, in the german bundesliga, marco reus scored his 100th league goal as borrusia dortmund came from a goal down to thrash rb leipzig 4—1. a minute's silence was held

before genoa played empoli in their serie a match, as a mark of respect to the 43 people who lost their lives when part of the morandi bridge collapsed in the city earlier this month. sunday's game was the first to be held at the stadium since the disaster. and genoa were 2—1winners in the end, christian kouame with their second goal, before empoli got a consolation deep into stoppage time. that is genoa's first victory of the new serie a season. elsewhere, inter milan squandered a 2—0 lead, drawing 2—2 with torino. spal made it two wins out of two with a 1—0 win over parma, whilst fiorentina thrashed chievo 6—1. it started with a spectacular multi—car crash, and there was plenty of drama to follow. sunday's belgian grand prix provided plenty of big moments, and for sebastain vettel, a big win as he cut lewis hamilton's

lead at the top of the driver's championship to 17 points. nick parrot was watching. spa has a notorious history of big accidents, usually in wet conditions. with sunshine bathing the track, few would have predicted this, nico hulkenberg's renault smashing into the back of fernando alonso‘s mclaren, with almost dire consequences. this is why the formula one brought in the halo safety device. it protected charles leclerc as alonso flew over him. all three were able to walk unaided from the shattered carbon fibre. while they were nursing their pride, lewis hamilton's was also being damaged. the championship leader started from pole, but was passed by rival sebastian vettel before the safety car came out following the crash. when racing resumed, the briton failed to retake the lead. unable to catch the ferrari,

he had to settle for second place. with vettel‘s victory cutting hamilton's advantage to 17 points, it was a day when f1 was shaken at the start and stirred at the finish. lewis pushed very hard, especially in the first. towards the end we could turn everything down a bit and control the pace, but yes, great weekend. we ultimately performed quite well this weekend, but he drove past me like i wasn't even there on the straights. so we've got to keep pushing as hard as we can to try and see if we can catch up, but you know, that's all i can say. for the first time in nearly a0 years, a round of the motogp world championships was cancelled outright, after torrential rain at silverstone in england meant all racing at the british grand prix on sunday couldn't take place. crashes in rain over the weekend meant riders were not prepared to risk their safety.
1:51 am
discussions did take place to postpone the race until monday, which was agreed by some teams and riders, but it wasn't given the go—ahead partly due to a lack of marshalls. i think you've all seen the results of when we've been running in heavy rain, that the circuit in some places is not safe, because of the way the water does not drain from the surface. we did everything we possibly could to run an event today. obviously the very last thing any of us wants to do is to cancel an event. however, safety remains our priority. bryson dechambeau cruised to a four—stroke victory at the northern trust, in the first round of the fedex cup playoffs in newjersey on sunday. after seeing his lead shrink to two shots with a bogey at the ninth, dechambeau responded with consecutive birdies on the back nine, en route to a closing 69 and 18—under for the tournament. it moves him past dustinjohnson in the fedex cup standings. padraig harrington blew
1:52 am
a three—stroke lead on the back nine, as andrea pavan capitalised to clinch his first—ever european tour win at the czech masters on sunday. pavan holed five birdies, which saw him finish with a five—under—par 67, and a two—stroke win on 22—under. the 29—year old claims his maiden european tour title, and moves to lust on the race to dubai standings. i'm not realising what i achieved, to be honest. playing today, i knew it was going to be tough. padraig has got so much experience, such a great player, and he played lovely. but, you know, ithink the putt on 16 was massive. you know, it could have easily gone both ways, especially he was up, he was ahead of me most of the day. but after i got ahead,
1:53 am
i stayed aggressive, which i'm pleased i did, because again, it came down to the last. rising star brooke henderson ended canada's drought at the canadian women's open with a four—stroke victory in regina on sunday. henderson finished on 2i—under, sealing the win with a short birdie putt on the 18th hole at the wascana country club. team sky's michal kwiatkowski is the new leader of the vuelta a espana, after finishing second on the second stage into caminito del rey. movistar‘s alejandro valverde took the honours in a tight finish, after a select bunch mastered the final climb. poland's kwiatkowski, leading team sky for the first time in a grand tour, couldn't beat the spaniard at the finish. the fourth and final tennis major of the year, the us open, gets underway at flushing meadows on monday. women's world number one simona halep plays on day one against kaia kanepi, and rafa nadal is also defending his title, having pulled out of the cincinnati masters last week to rest. very positive start.
1:54 am
it's important for the feelings, for the confidence, and that gives me the chance to rest the week after in cincinnati. i'm here just to try to improve every day. last year i lost in the first round, so cannot be worse than that. but, you know, ifeel confident. i feel that i have the game to win against her, but she's very dangerous. the last ten years or so i've been coming and preparing to try and win the event, whereas i don't feel like that's realistic for me this year. so it's a slightly different mentality coming in than what i have had the last ten, 11 years of my life. so that feels a bit odd. it's great that, yeah, the last few weeks are over, because i had a lot of work to do on court. but yes, we're close to the start of the us open now.
1:55 am
i won the us open five times, so i stand here pretty happy, to be quite honest. it's not like the us open never worked out for me. it hasn't the last few years, but it's all good. you can get all the latest sports news at our website. but, from me and the rest of the sport today team, goodbye. hello, good morning. after all the cold, wet weather that we had yesterday, you know things can only get better. it was stuck at 13 degrees for much of the afternoon, and with some rain heavy enough to give some localised flooding. we almost had two inches of rain falling in south wales. it came from all that thick cloud there. well, that has moved away. still quite a moist, westerly airstream heading our way, so there'll be a fair bit of cloud around today. but at least we will see some sunshine at times, and no more thanjust a few light showers. it will be warmer, as well.
1:56 am
so a few showers coming in on the westerly breeze across northern ireland for awhile, western scotland, over the irish sea into the north—west of england and wales. the showers becoming fewer through the afternoon. southern and eastern areas may stay dry. some sunshine at times, 19 degrees typically. significantly warmer than yesterday in scotland and eastern england, and perhaps the low 20s in the afternoon for the south—east and east anglia. fine as we head into the evening. a lot of cloud will tend to break up, because we're seeing pressure rising. clear skies for the most part overnight, and maybe temperatures down to 19 degrees. a bit of rain not far from the north—west by the end of the night. may start with some pockets of mist and fog in southern counties of england, shouldn't last long. plenty of sunshine for awhile, then as temperatures rise, the cloud develops, spreads out a little bit, and then that will break up later on in the day. it should be dry, really, apart from the far north—west of scotland and northern ireland. some warmer conditions spilling into eastern scotland, maybe the low 20s here, mid 20s possible for east anglia and the south—east. some difficulties tuesday and into wednesday. that band of rain is coming
1:57 am
in from the atlantic on the weather front. but there are developments taking place around biscay into the near continent, threatening some heavy bursts of rain, perhaps, not far away from east anglia and the south—east of england. the worst of itjust across the water, perhaps, and that weather front coming into and wales bringing more cloud than rain, the rain tending to peter out. and behind that, we should get more sunshine for scotland and northern ireland, with a slightly cooler and fresher feel here. that wetter weather does tend to ease through, and obviously the worst of itjust across the near continent. but high pressure then builds in behind that, settling things down. thursday looks like being a nice day. it'll start off a bit cool, perhaps, but it's going to be dry and there should be quite a bit of sunshine, hardly a breath of wind. get the sunshine, and with the light winds, it should feel quite pleasant. still, temperatures near—average for the time of year, low 20s in the south—east and 17 through the central belt of scotland.
