hello, this is bbc news. the headlines: more than a fifth of 14—year—old girls say they've self—harmed as a report says gender stereotypes and worries about physical appearance are contributing to unhappiness. the british ambassador to france has raised concerns about the actions of french fishermen off the normandy coast as violence broke out yesterday in a row over scallop fishing. the cabinet office minister david lidington tells french business leaders that the eu has to choose beteen the british government's chequers plan or the risk of there being no deal on brexit. an advert for an app billed as a "highly accurate" contraceptive tool has been banned after being ruled as "misleading" by the advertising standards authority. and the national trust is returning a popular tourist spot in south wales to how it would have
6:31 pm
looked in medieval times. in a moment it will be time for sportsday but first a look at what else is coming up this evening on bbc news. in america, voters went to the polls in florida and arizona yesterday — we'll get the latest on both the democrat and republican primary winners. after a study shows shocking levels of self harm among young people we'll be speaking to someone who has lived through it. and a year after launching in the us, facebook is going to roll—out its on—demand video service globally. that's all ahead on bbc news. welcome along to sportsday. hamdan or murrayfield, that is the
6:32 pm
future for the scottish fa. and the unsung hero award is launched. to be pa rt unsung hero award is launched. to be part of this campaign to really recognise those unsung heroes is a massive thing. also coming up: 99 and still going strong. we meet the manjust short ofa strong. we meet the manjust short of a century and still playing tennis. welcome along.
6:33 pm
let's start at the us open where players have been battling the heat and humidity in new york. not easy for the fittest of players so how will andy murray fare, as his return to grand slam tennis continues within the next hour or so? he'll take on the spanish 31st seed fernando verdasco in the second round. murray came through a four—set encounter with james duckworth on monday as he looks to find his best form again, following more than a year away from the court after hip surgery. our tennis correspondent russell fuller is in new york. these are the days that andy murray has been working for. it is for days like this that he spent four hours a day doing rehab in the pool on his hip after his early exit from the cincinnati masters early this month and up to three hours a day on the treatment table. fernando verdasco
6:34 pm
on the largest pennies stadium anywhere in the world is a formidable opponent. the heat will be an issue, 35 degrees is expected, and high levels of humidity. fernando verdasco will drive married to distraction and test is movement which murray felt it was some way away from where he wanted it to be. cameron norrie is also in action and if he can be a man who has a similar ranking, you will be in the third round of a grand slam for the first time in his career. round of a grand slam for the first time in his career. well, as russell mentioned murray and norrie are now the only home hopes left in new york. that's after the british women's number one johanna konta was knocked out in herfirst round match by the sixth seed caroline garcia. this was a tough draw for konta, who has fallen down the rankings. so she wasn't seeded for this tournament for the first time in ten grand slam events. well, the other big story at flushing meadows this week has troubled all of the players. the temperatures have reached 38
6:35 pm
degrees celsius on court with humidity levels of more than 50%. it's made it really difficult especially for the european players not used to these conditions, and novak djokovic said he had to battle with the conditions as much as his opponent in his first round win. it was a tough one, we both struggled. we were not the only ones today. obviously we had almost ten retirements in the men's draw. cruel conditions, but it is what it is and you have to deal with it. i had to find a way to dig myself out of trouble. it really feels like everything is boiling in your body in our brains and everything, the temperatures are so high. you want to try to counter that a little bit so to try to counter that a little bit so you to try to counter that a little bit so you can to try to counter that a little bit so you can refresh yourself. well, djokovic wasn't the only one affected because yesterday there were five retirements from first round matches because of the heat and djokvic‘s hungarian opponent
6:36 pm
marton fucsovics said he was dying after every point and that it was dangerous to be playing. petra kvitova managed to get through her match but she was another player clearly not used to the intense humidity on court. the world number 61 in the men's game, julien benneteau, made some very strong comments on the issue saying the us open organisers were lucky it was just retirements for players and not something more serious. and the other issue making the headlines has been a code violation issued to the french player alize cornet. she was warned by the umpire for changing her shirt while out on court, rather than next to her chair, much the the frustration ofjudy murray, but now the us tennis association say they regret the code violation was issued. the women's tennis association say this incident was unfair on cornet and not based on a wta rule.
6:37 pm
plenty more reaction to that story now over on the bbc sport website plus commentary of all the best action at flushing meadows this evening, including andy murray's second round match with fernando verdasco, which you can also listen to on 5 live sports extra. well, from new york to glasgow now as scottish football could well be getting a new home. after more than a century international football and cup finals at hampden park could be a thing of the past. the scottish football association have had two days of talks to consider a move to the home of scottish rugby, murrayfield in edinburgh. as the decision will have a significant bearing on the game, they need more time and information before a final decision will be made. our senior scotland football reporter chris mclaughlin has some more details.
6:38 pm
today was billed as d—day for hampden park, but in the end it was d for delay. after hours of discussion between the sfa board members, they released a short statement, the chief executive ian maxwell saying this decision will have a significant bearing on the game in scotland. we have asked both parties for additional information to be submitted within seven days. what does that mean? it does indicate i suppose there is no clear favourite in the fight to become the future home of scottish football. it does remain a straight fight between hampden park, the sfa looking at the potential of buying the stadium from the owners queen ‘s park, or moving 50 miles east to the home of scottish rugby, murrayfield. so it looks like we will not have a decision today. we should have a
6:39 pm
decision today. we should have a decision by this time next week. it isa decision by this time next week. it is a huge call for the scottish fa that will indeed impact on the future of scottish football. that will indeed impact on the future of scottish football. could england host the women's european championship in 2021? the football association certainly hope so. they've submitted a bid to host the tournament, with the backing of the government, and if successful wembley would stage the final, with seven other venues around the country also put forward. austria and hungary are also expected to bid with uefa choosing the hosts in december. i think it is enormous to have a major championships like this on home soil across cities all over england. ijust think in terms of both fans and inspiring a generation of young people to play the game, fantastic. by 2021 we will have built a whole infrastructure of opportunity for youngsters to play, so they will be excited and they will be able to go and find somewhere to play. it's a big week in the women's world cup as we get to the business
6:40 pm
end of qualification. england and wales go head to head on friday as they bid to reach the tournament in france next year. as for scotland, they must beat switzerland in paisley to keep automatic hopes of reaching the tournament alive. the swiss top group 2 with six wins from six, with shelley kerr's side three points behind going into the final two fixtures. i cannot predict what is going to happen, none of us can, there are so many variables that can happen. all ican many variables that can happen. all i can say is the preparation has been brilliant and they are ready and they need to show that they are confident and capable of beating a tea m confident and capable of beating a team that is higher rank than them. ryan giggs has called on manchester united fans to rally round the under pressure manager jose mourinho, but at the same time distanced himself from speculation linking him with becoming the next manager at the club. united's 3—0 defeat to spurs on monday was their second loss in their opening three league games and was followed by
6:41 pm
a somewhat bizarre press conference from mourinho. the most decorated player in old trafford history believes the club should stick with the current manager. i think it is time for the fans to stick together and get behind the clu b stick together and get behind the club and get behind the team, get behind the manager, the coaching staff. that is me clearly speaking asafan. staff. that is me clearly speaking as a fan. it is a tough time at the moment, but we have had tough times before and have pulled through. you are 12 to one to succeed him, do you expect the call any time soon? eat your money in your pocket. eat your money in your pocket. so wise financial advice from giggs, who was speaking at a press conference naming his next international squad. one notable absentee from that squad was hal robson kanu. he has subsequently retired from international football after his omission from the squads to play the republic of ireland and denmark in nations league qualifiers. robson—kanu, who won 44 caps,
6:42 pm
famously scored in his country's 3—1win over belgium in the quarter—finals of euro 2016. also coming up in the programme... england recall moeen ali as they chase a test series win over india. and it's never too late to play sport. this is 99—year—old tom hicks' advice. keep having spot and keep exercising. walk, anything, but don'tjust sit there exercising. walk, anything, but don't just sit there and vegetate. the bbc get inspired unsung hero award is returning for it's 16th year. the award celebrates volunteers who dedicate their free time to help people participate in grassroots sports and fitness activities. we're asking you to nominate an unsung hero from your area. we'll have more in a moment but take a look at this video first. it could be him. or her. you might
6:43 pm
not realise it, but there are he rose, unsung heroes, in every community. a coach, organise and support groups and clubs of all shapes and sizes. without them, there would be none of this, or this. jessica ennis-hill is on top of the world. it is time to set up proper thank you. to elevate your unsung hero to superhero. to nominate your unsung hero, go to bbc .c0. nominate your unsung hero, go to bbc .co. uk/ unsung hero. and i am delighted to say jessica .co. uk/ unsung hero. and i am delighted to sayjessica joins us. we have seen how you nominate the unsung hero will stop for you why is it important to be involved?” unsung hero will stop for you why is it important to be involved? i have reached the pinnacle of my career
6:44 pm
andi reached the pinnacle of my career and i was the one on the track and receiving the award, but i am very aware of how many people who made it happen for me, all the people who started that process of getting me involved in sport, supporting me and motivating me and making sacrifices along the way to allow me to achieve my dreams. so to be part of this campaign, to recognise those unsung heroes, is a massive thing. can you think anything you look back on and think, wow, that is amazing? they spent all that time when you were a kid and invested in you. my family made huge sacrifices for me when i was starting out in sport. they supported me and they were there every second of the way, but when i started athletics and was first introduced to athletics, there were two coaches, in particular toni minichiello who supported me and noticed i had the talent and guided me in the right direction. is that
6:45 pm
something you would like to do right now? coaching is definitely not for me. i don't think i have the patience. i think to be able to be pa rt patience. i think to be able to be part of this campaign, to encourage people to nominate someone who has really helped them or make a difference to their journey really helped them or make a difference to theirjourney in sport, whatever it might be, is a great thing to be involved in. when you were competing you came back after having your first baby and we are seeing that being spoken about a lot more, and being put forward in terms of how women can have careers and either continue on in sport afterwards, or maybe take a step back. i know this week with the us open we are seeing serena back. i know this week with the us open we are seeing serena williams and herjourney open we are seeing serena williams and her journey back. open we are seeing serena williams and herjourney back. how do you think sport can better support women coming back after time?|j think sport can better support women coming back after time? i think sport is still learning about it. particularly when i came back after having my son it was a known for my
6:46 pm
team. my physio and my coach were kind of like, what is the process now? how do we start back into training? it was very much a learning process. in recent years, the likes of serena williams and laura kenny and the other athletes who are deciding they do not have to finish their career and have their family and find another direction, you can step back into sport. the more women who do it and talk about it and share their experiences, the better, because it can help other women who hope to achieve it as well. when serena williams came back at the french open she had issues with the blood clotting. at the weekend over the french open they said they would not accept what she had to wear next year. is that unfair? i don't know all the details of the suit that she wore, but every woman has a different experience through labour and recovery from after having a child and it is
6:47 pm
important for us to understand that so we can important for us to understand that so we can best support those women who are trying to get back to the top level of their sport. in terms of your legacy when you look back now and when you consider everything, i suppose you have had the time to reflect on it because when you are in the moment you do not let yourself do that because you are focused on the next games. how do you back on your career? you are right, i have that time now to allow myself to look back on those moments. i am myself to look back on those moments. iam really myself to look back on those moments. i am really appreciative for the time i had in the sport and what i have achieved and really those people who helped me achieve what i did. it is great now that i can sit back and relax a little bit more, i don't have to do the gruelling training. i can look back at those great memories. great to have a chat with jessica at those great memories. great to have a chat withjessica ennis—hill a little earlier. (tx vt) england have named their team to face india in the fourth test tomorrow with moeen ali back in the side.
6:48 pm
the all—rounder will bat at seven — he has been recalled in place of ollie pope in the lineup. joe root will havejonny bairstow in the side, that's despite breaking his finger in the third test. he'll play as a specialist batsman and jos buttler will keep wicket. england lead 2—1, looking to seal victory in the five—match series. we have got a lot of depth in terms of our bowlers batting and have made some brilliant contributions as well. look at the form of moeen ali, 100 and a double hundred in a week and sam has performed brilliantly in the first two games in this series. it is great to see a good amount of depth that there is with the guys in and around the squad. let's take a look at some other stories making the news today. ireland have levelled their one—day series against afghansitan with a three—wicket win in the second match in belfast. tim murtagh took four wickets as afghanistan made 182 and he hit the winning runs too.
6:49 pm
the series is tied at 1—1 with friday's decider also in belfast. mark cavendish is to take a period of total rest from cycling because of illness. he's been diagnosed with the epstein—barr virus. medical tests have shown cavendish has been training with the virus — which causes glandular fever — over recent months. the football association has lent its support to safe standing if there's "clear evidence that satisfies authorities". the premier league and efl have also said they'd support clubs wanting to install safe standing in the top two tiers of english football. a government review is expected to report by the end of the year. and liverpool's loris karius has completed his two—year loan deal to turkish side besiktas. the german keeper has lost his place at anfield this season, and made two costly mistakes in the champions league final in may. karius says he is still young and hopes to make the next step in his career.
6:50 pm
we started the programme with tennis and now we are ending with it. is this britain 5 oldest tennis player? 99 and still going strong. many players half his age would have hung up their rackets long ago. but tom hicks, from royston in south yorkshire, still plays three times a week and has no intention of giving up the sport he loves. dave edwards has been to meet him. for more than a0 years, tom hicks has been
