to aretha franklin at an invitation—only funeral ceremony in detroit. famous faces attending included jesse jackson and former president bill clinton. he described aretha as the voice of a generation if not the century. the trump administration has confirmed that it's stopping all funding for the un agency that supports palestinian refugees. washington had already drastically cut its support for the agency, which helps more than five million palestinians. a spokesman for the palestinian prime minister described the move as a flagrant assault on the palestinian people and a defiance of un resolution. a bbc investigation has found evidence that china has imprisoned up to one million muslim uighurs in so—called re—education camps. the investigation uncovered allegations of torture. the un says it is alarmed by the reports and called for the detainees‘ release. china has denied the camps even exist. now on bbc news, it's time to click. this week, and your skates on for
1:31 am
security games. yes! ballgames. high jumps. this is what it feels like to be on the moon. and robot drinks. this is the business card of our first guest on the programme this week, google's self self—proclaimed security princess. it's one of the biggest names in cyber security. the buck stops with her death, for example, chrome, google's browser, is hacked. and if you've ever seen
1:32 am
these while you're browsing, these little padlock to help us to know if the link between your computer and phone and a website is secure. carrico is behind google's push to get more websites to use the encrypted http —esque protocol. now, not all hackers are bad guys, of course. carrico employs about 200 of them ina course. carrico employs about 200 of them in a specialist unit called project zero. they hacked all sorts of software before the bad guys do before any vulnerabilities can be spotted and fixed. there like a police force but they all were houthis, because obviously that's all that hackers ever were apparently. —— moody's. anyway, dan simmons went to chat about all these things at the world's biggest cyber security expo, black hat. the security princess is informal, controversial and, unusually for the industry, she's a woman, so honours even with the paper versus is being,
1:33 am
we agreed to stay there. who gave you the title of security princess? icame up you the title of security princess? i came up with it myself. when i started at google i had a job title engineer security engineer in the engineering security team which i thought was a mouthful and also not very meaningful so i thought i was going to go to a conference and they gave me business cards, i thought if i was going to have a meaningless job title, i thought i would make it cute and whimsical. it served me well because i think there's a lot of people serious in security and come from defence. they have their a—star generals and... and when they see a card that says security princess it's shocking and they smile and it's a nice icebreaker. on a serious note, you're one of very few women at your level in the security industry, even in the it industry, but specifically in the security industry. what's it like?
1:34 am
when ijoined chrome to lead the security team i was the only woman, and now we have a whole team which is now majority women and they're the one who are actually responsible for all the work that we've seen to push https on the website. what are the things you pick up on that say actually that does put a few women off? i hear a lot of stories and you hear subtle things, like you go to an event and there is women who are, kind of, dressed in scantily clad outfits and that's, like, the major... that doesn't make you feel included and respected as a professional. small things like support for mothers so that they can actually participate i think would actually participate i think would actually make environments much more inclusive. one of paris's achievements is to persuade and bullied webpages not to use http and
1:35 am
use https to deliver their content. although not everyone is convinced, the vast majority of big websites have switched, especially once chrome started warning uses the old system was simply insecure. chrome started warning uses the old system was simply insecurelj chrome started warning uses the old system was simply insecure. i think reasoned in the past work, like, it's going to be expensive, it's going to make things slow, it's not going to make things slow, it's not going to make things slow, it's not going to be worth the effort but i think for that you still want the people reading it, even if it'sjust your friends, to people reading it, even if it'sjust yourfriends, to get people reading it, even if it'sjust your friends, to get the content of your friends, to get the content of your blog and not have the isp interject adverts or see other content interject adverts or see other co nte nt into interject adverts or see other content into your blog. the only way you get that is through https.“ there a scenario where if a webpage is http, google chrome won't deliver it in the future? i don't think so, no. crime at the end of the day is a browser and it's meant to help users use the web and http is a protocol the web has relied on, so we want
1:36 am
users to be able to access that content but we also want to indicate to users, look, you can't have any confidence in how this data was actually transmitted to you. project zero gets hackers to find bugs in any zero gets hackers to find bugs in a ny software zero gets hackers to find bugs in any software on the web. be given vendor is 90 days to fix it or they go public. doing that has actually incentivised more changi and industry in terms of being able to fix security bugs faster. before you started, 25% of those problems got sorted in 90 days i understand? yes. and now it is what? the vast majority, 98% of issues are fixed within the 90 day disclosure policy. is there something on the horizon that you are worried about? we're seeing computers in everything now. it used to be this big con key machine that you had in your house and now everything is a computer. screens in your house and speakers
1:37 am
and devices and your car, i think there's a lot to be figured out but i'm an optimist, we'll figure it out. you have to be a genius to be in your position? no, you don't, and not a word you have to be a genius? i'm not, if there's one thing i want you to know, i am not a genius. i work hard, i embrace learning and as you get older your kind of afraid to fail but that's how you learn. i see my parents being very afraid of technology and feeling like i don't know the right way to do it so they don't want to try to. but technology's always evolving so you have to try things and very rarely will you do something that will render the machine completely unuseful and explode. so i think embracing learning and trying things is important as you get older. can we do one more because i know i lost the first one. sure, sure. ok. three ain? the first one. sure, sure. ok. three again? ok, got it. oh, yes! oh, yes!
1:38 am
0h, again? ok, got it. oh, yes! oh, yes! oh, yes! until next time, parisa, thank you very much. thank you. now, over the years, we've tried more than ourfair now, over the years, we've tried more than our fair share now, over the years, we've tried more than ourfair share of now, over the years, we've tried more than our fair share of weird and wonderful transport devices. there was the one we'll. the air we'll. the something or other. blimey, there was even this self tuning robo chair injapan. the grand daddy of all of these self balancing devices was of course the segway, and as the click team took pa rt segway, and as the click team took part in the segway world cup recently, we celebrate the wonders of the smaller, lighter sensors that gave rise to this entirely new category of transport. and if you thought we'd now exhausted all the wacky ways you can get around, well, you'd be wrong. we sent chris fox to the tech expo in berlin to get his hands... well, actually his feet, on the very latest set of self balancing wheels.
1:39 am
the worst thing about rollerskates, for me at least, is the process of putting them on and taking them off so putting them on and taking them off so it's nice to see these have no stra ps so it's nice to see these have no straps at all. i can just stepped on and in minutes i'll be rolling around as gracefully as these professional dancers, although i did notice that even they had difficulties now and again. i've already mastered the art of rollerskating and i can ride a self balancing unicycle... sort of. so this should be a doddle. already moving! 0k. like a segway, these states are self balancing. you just stepped on and lea n forward balancing. you just stepped on and lean forward to go. and with a top speed of around seven mph, they go pretty fast. at least for a beginner. 0k. mph, they go pretty fast. at least fora beginner. 0k. to turn i
1:40 am
mph, they go pretty fast. at least for a beginner. 0k. to turn i have to apply pressure on just one foot. so let's do a corner here. nailed it. and after i relaxed and did a few la ps, it. and after i relaxed and did a few laps, the training circuit, i did actually get better at it. i've just about reached that point where my legs kind of understand it now and i'm a lot more comfortable doing it. this is segway‘s vision for the states. not business people riding to work in their suits but carefree youngsters are zipping around a city and laughing. it's worth bearing in mind that lots of countries have banned electric rideable is like these skates from the streets. i know in the united kingdom, they are still forbidden on the streets. if you go to paris, all the streets. if you go to paris, all the products for example are perfectly legal and allowed to ride on the streets so you will see a lot more of them in cities like paris oi’. so how do these compare to other
1:41 am
rideable is like the so—called hover board? well, i'm inclined to think they look a little less silly and i'm told having your feet separated let's you learn some cool tricks, although i'm probably not at that level yet. 0ne leg in... 0k. i've got some more practice to do. hello and welcome to the whee kim tech. list start with a quick tour of the tech expo in berlin. first up, sit back and arcing... the acer predator throne is comes with a reclining seat, deep impact function and support for three monitors. time to start saving up, no price as yet but expect this rig to be unbelievably expensive. with that sort of spec, i'm hoping it comes with a cup holder. 0ther bites include this mystifying take on a smart speakerfrom include this mystifying take on a smart speaker from design centric bang and 0lesen. roll it to control the volume, it will roll back on its own. why not? and polarise's latest offering let's picture takers give
1:42 am
away the paper version and keep a copy on their smart phones. 0k, that's enough from berlin. was also the week that z mp, the autonomous driving company, partnered with a japanese taxi firm to make a d riverless japanese taxi firm to make a driverless taxi. the two—week trial or vehicles travelling five kilometres autonomously, although they have a backup driver and assistant on—board. they aim to implement the tech for the 2020 tokyo 0lympics. compare that cutting edge technology trial to this from jaguar land rover. researchers think giant googly eyes on an autonomous pod will reassure pedestrians that they have been seen. it's actually a test to help understand the perception of safety. well, the googly eyes can stay as long as that pod has a sweet sound system. now, in my experience, one of the big themes of almost every eve tech show is the smart home which usually means being a very latest version of a fridge with a camera in it unless
1:43 am
you can't be bothered to open the door but lara lewington has managed to hunt down some actually useful smart stuff. there's been no shortage of smart home devices over the past few yea rs, home devices over the past few years, but which ones would you actually want? this small plastic bin is the prototype of something called the vindicator. the idea is it will connect to your local council's website and will then change colour depending on what bin needs to be connected. so it does solve a problem but the question is, do you really want it sitting in your house? 0ne do you really want it sitting in your house? one thing that isn't a matter of opinion, though, is that we all want to make sure our homes are safe. yes, it has the senses, it even has the photo sensor which will ta ke even has the photo sensor which will take five photographs every time a movement triggers it, that's of course only when the alarm is actually set, but this is the real difference. a fog dispenser which will fill the room with fog so if
1:44 am
somebody is about to steal something, well, they might not be able to even find it. once the alarm is set, the control centre will be able to access sound and pictures. the activation ofjust one sensor is then enough to alert a human to trigger this fault if needed. wow! well, it's quite something, i'm glad ididn't well, it's quite something, i'm glad i didn't get the job of being well, it's quite something, i'm glad i didn't get thejob of being a well, it's quite something, i'm glad i didn't get the job of being a fake burglar. it does catch in your throat a bit and a bit stinging on your eyes but i've been assured it's perfectly safe, it's past to some sort of eu regulations and a p pa re ntly sort of eu regulations and apparently it leaves no residue inside anyone's home because obviously that would be slightly offputting. but right now ijust wa nt to offputting. but right now ijust want to move out the way. i was also warned it may irritate pets. but of course it would be better to stop a would—be burglar at the first hurdle, the front door. this isn't the first smart bill that i've shown you but it's climbing to be the
1:45 am
first that offers person detection and facial recognition. —— bell. simon is at the front door. simon's at the front door! hello, simon. i'm just going to come and get you. full functionality does require a subscription. it can then recognise faces as well as an live video recordings, which can be available up recordings, which can be available up to five days after they were captured. you can also pretend to be in when you're out. or, of course, vice—versa. they do say there's safety in numbers, though, so maybe you'd like some company. if you were starting to think your home virtual assistant was a little bit low—tech then maybe it's because you've been waiting for a home robot. now here you can do video calls hands—free. it also has the other functions that you'd expect from a virtual assista nt. you'd expect from a virtual assistant. hey, temi, what's the weather in london today? there is the weather in london, united kingdom. today 21 celsius and mostly
1:46 am
cloudy throughout the day. through facial recognition and identifying your shape it can also identifying your shape it can also identify you and follow you around jupp identify you and follow you around jupp heynckes i just identify you and follow you around jupp heynckes ijust need to introduce myself. there we go. it knows who i am. so come with me. ——. slightly unnerving. great. i think my phone just needs a bit more power. look up there. i think actually, sadi, you look a bit thirsty. i will pass you a drink. no need to move. they, temi, go to the sofa. brilliant, thanks. it recognised go to the sober, it's just not done it. hey, temi, go to the sofa. i didn't get that. go to the sofa. i didn't get that. go to the sofa. i didn't get that. go to
1:47 am
the sofa. i'm going to the sofa. thank you. it does need a strong wi—fi connection and we all know voice recognition still has a way to go but still, you'd better make sure that your guests want to thirsty. better luck next time. that was lara. now, last summer i travelled to los angeles to meet two guys who had an ambitious plan. they were going to revolutionise fun. brent busheu going to revolutionise fun. brent bushell and eric bradman are to engineers who had a dream, to take their travelling hi—tech roadshow and give it a permanent home in this big top. it's taken a while, longer than planned, but the opening night of the two bit circus is upon us and nick has been to have a look. today,
1:48 am
i'm doing some serious journalism. the circus is behind schedule. i've rolled up my sleeves and i'm not leaving without answers. it had a bit longer to get a few different things green lit than we needed but a month behind, but this project, i consider that a head. you said early 2018. that's true. the updated data, we are ahead of schedule. that's that then. 0ne we are ahead of schedule. that's that then. one thing is for sure, the circus is finally in town with the circus is finally in town with the same professional clowns at the helm. same blue shirt, same mad mohd forkful dashed mohawk. eric and i are trained clowns and eric was in a running circus to two years, we are engineers, i've been an entrepreneur my life but the playful and the whimsy you get from clowning is particularly wonderful when it comes to public entertainment. two bit
1:49 am
circus is a surreal play land, a fluorescent mix of code, clowning and good old—fashioned nostalgia. this has ballooned pop, but we mixed it with a connect three game. trying to match three? get the balloons to disappear. crazy cameras up on the ceiling, seeing what colour the balls. this is fun. i'm pretending to listen to what you are saying but i'm extremely distracted. how many yea rs i'm extremely distracted. how many years to perfect this? the tech or the ball throwing? both. this is the culmination of many, many hours of programming. when you hit a virtual trumpet, pumps in the ceiling blast eireann to your face, rather startling. i've been trumpeted. do you want to feel what it's like to destroy the building? yes, i do. as fast as you can! this is suspending

ranger laser finder like the type you find on autonomous cars. that is so the computer knows exactly where the ball is hitting. how are the flaws moving? i am cyborg is under your feet. we often start with a configuration or a sensor that we wa nt to configuration or a sensor that we want to use an kind of make something fun around it. that is how this one got started.|j something fun around it. that is how this one got started. i worked up quite a sweat, what is next? welcome to the bridge of the space squad in fallible. the real brian -- the real brain behind the operation is right here, i see. brain behind the operation is right here, isee. there brain behind the operation is right here, i see. there is a weapons station, an engineering station, science station, a captain station and at each one of these consoles, a different person help fly this ship into space. how many bits are part of the game? a good question. it is ha rd to of the game? a good question. it is hard to count the number of games. we like to think in terms of the
1:51 am
number of people who can be entertained. entrance is free but each game is pay to play. in the city of angels, today's hot ticket can soon city of angels, today's hot ticket can soon become yesterday ‘s sideshow so how are the guys going to keep the crowd coming back for more? everything we put into two bit circus is a platform for the developer so the park can transport you to another world that you can go to any number of different worlds with br and we want to explore different experiences, we can build different experiences, we can build different arcade games on top of the platforms were built. 0ur story rooms are episodic stock software —based, so we can create new experiences and go deeper with eve ryo ne experiences and go deeper with everyone of these experiences without having to build more physical hardware. we will soon see if the circus is a sell—out show or straight to dvd. well, if they are ready in time. the winner! i... in

my defence, i may have played it before. i may have even made it. welcome, astronaut. you are about to embark on your first extravehicular activity on the moon. the suit will be wearing consists of several elements to enhance your experience. a suspended safety harness, a personal telemetry system to track your body movements, and finally, samsung dear vr headset and controller to help you see and controller to help you see and control of sect —— objects in your environment. in the run—up to the 50th anniversary of the apollo 11 moon landing next year, creative studio frame store and samsung have been touring the world with their lunar br experience called "a moon for all mankind? .
1:53 am
lunar br experience called "a moon forall mankind? . 0nly lunar br experience called "a moon forall mankind? . only 12 lunar br experience called "a moon for all mankind? . only 12 white mail american astronauts have walked to the moon. no other nationalities or gender or race silly like the idea of opening up the moon for everybody. while vr headsets can track will respond to your head movements and some will allow you to movements and some will allow you to move around in 3—d virtual space, to really feel like you are on the moon, you are going to have to lose some weight. this beast is based on nasa's own variable gravity simulator called argos, the active response gravity offload system. 0k, the rig is now going to weigh me. and then work out what my weight would be on the moon. and then it knows how much extra lift to give me whenever i jump and knows how much extra lift to give me whenever ijump and how slowly, to make me descend, in order to simulate one sixth gravity. wow. this is what it feels like to be on the moon. the experience hasn't even
1:54 am
started yet and i'm having a good time. unlike more advanced vr headsets, the gear biak can only tell which way your head is pointing. the vertical position in the arms and the leg side tracked by the arms and the leg side tracked by the censors on your suit. here we go to the edge of a crater now. the earth looks amazing. now u nfortu nately, if earth looks amazing. now unfortunately, if you are sensitive toa unfortunately, if you are sensitive to a mismatch between your senses, the fact that you think you are moving forward across the lunar surface is actually you are going up and down may cause a little bit of discomfort. i'm going to get out of here because there seems to be a meteor shower. it certainly makes brain exhilarating ride, though. definitely more dramatic than any of the lunar astronauts would have wanted. 0h, the lunar astronauts would have wanted. oh, my goodness. my helmet has cracked. mission accomplished. how's that? i survived, but it was close. well, that was certainly an
1:55 am
experience that you can't get anywhere on earth, apart from i suppose. that's if this week. don't forget we live on facebook and twitter. thank you very much for watching and we will see you soon. take your first fleet. well, the weekend's upon us, and the weather is actually looking pretty good across much of the country over the next some warmth, summerlike warmth. in fact, temperatures could get up into the mid—20s. the nights are drawing in, the days are getting shorter and any warmth that we do get, we really should make some warmth, summerlike warmth. in fact, temperatures could get up into the mid—20s. the nights are drawing in, the days are getting shorter and any warmth that we do get,
1:56 am
we really should make the most of it. so let's see what's happening then into the weekend, high pressure's very close to the uk, so that means settled weather conditions, but there are weather fronts very close to our neighbourhood. some warmth, summerlike warmth. weather conditions, but there are weather fronts very close to our neighbourhood. they will be nudging in later in the weekend, possibly bringing some rain to north—western areas. but before that happens, we've got that warmth being drawn in from the south, from spain, portugal, france as well and, as i say, temperatures will be well into the twenties. this is what it looks like through the rest of the night into early saturday morning, clear skies across many eastern and central areas so here there'll be a nip in the air very early in the morning. temperatures dip down to single figures. not as cold as last night. western areas, more cloud here, more of a breeze and a little bit warmer. in the west of the country, temperatures first thing will be around about 15 degrees but there's quite a lot of cloud you can see here from cornwall, devon, throughout wales, the irish sea and into south—western scotland, and if you squint you'll notice there's a bit of rain here, so perhaps for some of us, a grey start to the day across western parts of the country. clouds here will be breaking up here, it's not one layer of grey, there'll be some sunshine out
1:57 am
for sure, and even if you get a grey morning, by late morning, lunch time, you will probably see some sunshine by then. best of the weather will be across eastern and southern areas and here, temperatures could reach around the mid—20s, but certainly around 20 degrees on the cards for northern ireland, and not far off that in the lowlands of scotland. that was saturday, this is sunday now. again the best of the weather across eastern and southern areas but this weather front is edging closer and closer. winds are strengthening, really quite blustery around the western isles, in the north and west coast of northern ireland. winds are strengthening, really quite blustery around the western isles, in the north and west coast of northern ireland. the real warmth develops in central and eastern areas, that's that plume of warmth coming out of france, so temperatures will get into the mid—20s in london, possibly even the mid—20s as far north as yorkshire, but in the north—west, a little bit of rain on the way for belfast later in the afternoon on sunday or early evening. the outlook into next week isn't looking bad at all, variable amounts of cloud. looks like the temperatures will drop a little bit, but essentially speaking it's looking fine, into the 20s or high teens for most of us. bye— bye. welcome to bbc news,

broadcasting to viewers in north america on pbs and around the globe. my name is nkem ifejika. our top stories: the trump administration confirms that it's stopping all funding for the un agency that supports palestinian refugees. you make me feel, you make me feel... a star—studded send off for aretha franklin at a funeral ceremony in her hometown of detroit. the world is celebrating you. and the world is mourning you. and the world is going to miss you. how genetic science is helping britain's magnificent golden eagles spread their wings. and the latest film by oscar winning director alfonso cuaron is getting top marks in venice. but the decision to stream it first gets mixed reviews.
