coming up on this programme: defending women's champion sloane stephens is knocked out of the us open by anastasija sevastova. team usa captainjim furyk has selected tiger woods, bryson dechambeau and phil mickelson as three of his four captain's picks for the ryder cup later this month. and denmark's football team could pick a side including futsal players against wales this weekend. hello and welcome to the programme, where we start with tennis at the us open in new york, and six—time winner serena williams is through to the semi—finals after a straight—sets win over karolina pliskova. the 20—time grand slam winner was a 6—4, 6—7 winner and will now face number 19 seed anastasija sevastova after she knocked out defending champion sloane stephens, also in straight sets, 6—2, 6—3. the latvian number 19 seed, who is through to her first

grand slam semi—final, broke stephens twice in the opening set, and completed the win injust under an hour and a half. it is always tough to play her, i think, because her ball is so heavy, she has a big spender the forehand, also backhand, and it comes at you so also backhand, and it comes at you so fast. also good serve and moving well, so it is tough to make points against her, but i had to be aggressive, i had to try to come to the net, place and drop shots, move her, not let her play the game with her, not let her play the game with herforehand, her, not let her play the game with her forehand, and make her, not let her play the game with herforehand, and make the her, not let her play the game with her forehand, and make the winners. i've been sick since monday, bad sinus infection. but whatever, you've got to play. and like i said, i have been playing well the last

matches, and today was a tough day. ididn't matches, and today was a tough day. i didn't play my best. i wish i could have played better, but it just wasn't the day. while in the men's draw, juan martin del potro fought back from losing the first set against americanjohn isner to claim a four—set victory and advance to the semi—finals. the argentine, who won this event in 2009, will now play either world number one rafael nadal or austria's dominic thiem in the last four. american captain jim furyk has chosen tiger woods, phil mickelson and bryson dechambeau as three of his wildcard picks for the united states team to face europe in this month's ryder cup. dechambeau is in fine form, having won the previous two pga tour events, and leads the fedex cup standings, while five—time major winner mickelson plays in a record 12th event after making his debut in 1995. the most interesting, perhaps, is the return of 42—year—old woods as a player for the first time since 2012, having recovered from back surgery and after finishing second at the recent us pga championship.

i haven't been putt of the team playing wise for six years. i served asa playing wise for six years. i served as a vice captain a couple of years ago, and that was absolutely incredible to be putt of the team, be putt of these young guys, and just to try to help them in any way, shape orform just to try to help them in any way, shape or form i just to try to help them in any way, shape orform i could, whether it was with pairings, spikes or senators or water, whatever they needed. i was there. and this year, to have the honour to be able to play again is beyond special. so the final pick for the americans will come on sunday after the bmw championship in pennsylvania, while in the next 2a hours, europe captain thomas bjorn will announce his four wildcard picks. butjoe lynskey has been taking a closer look at the players jim furyk has given the nod to. well, the united states haven't won the ryder cup on european soil since 1993. but they are hoping this team can end that 25 year wait when they

go to paris. they are looking to retain the trophy that they won in minnesota two years ago. now, these are the eight automatic picks. they had already secured their place on jim furyk‘s team. you can see the figures here. indicate how many major titles each of these players has one. you can major titles each of these players has one. you can see major titles each of these players has one. you can see rickie fowler the only man without a major, but he did finish as runner up in the masters earlier this year. now, these players have now been joined by three more captain's hicks, tiger woods, phil mickelson, and 24—year—old bryson dechambeau. now, you can see from the major title numbers of woods and mickelson what a threat these three will be to the europeans at the golf national course. 1a titles for woods, five four phil mickelson. bryson dechambeau is perhaps the more informed player of the three, actually. he has just informed player of the three, actually. he hasjust won informed player of the three, actually. he has just won the first two pga tour play—off events, and he is the first man to do that in a decade. dechambeau has also had an interesting rise to the top. he came

through the american collegiate system, where he studied physics to help you master the science behind the golf swing. now he says he is ready for the theatre of the ryder cup. a man on a mission right now. two visions, actually. 0ne being the ryder cup, one being the fedex cup. so i'm doing pretty well right now, and just got to keep moving forward in the right direction. well, dechambeau is one of only two players an american team now who will go to this ryder cup is a rocky. it is a different story for the european side, with the majority of this list having never played in the competition before. the only three of the eight automatic picks to have played a ryder cup match our rory mcilroy, justin rose and molinari, and there are some big names who because of their dip in form this year will now be relying ona form this year will now be relying on a captain's pick from thomas bjorn if they are to make it this year. it includes some big names, henrik stenson, the open champion of

2016, and sergio garcia, who won the masters just in 2017 but has had a very poor run of form in 2018. ian poulter will also be looking at thomas bjorn‘s decision as well, he is such a passionate player when it comes to the ryder cup in something ofa comes to the ryder cup in something of a master of match play. so bjorn announces that decision on monday. 0ur correspondent gives us his verdict on who might get the call. given the fact that of the eight automatic qualifiers in that european team five of them are first timers, our rockies, i think on that race as he will be looking for experience when he goes for his four wildcard picks. iam experience when he goes for his four wildcard picks. i am expecting ian poulter to get the nod, and paul casey. i think henrik stenson, i think he will get the nod as well, and in that final one is very difficult tojudge. sergio and in that final one is very difficult to judge. sergio garcia has been short of form but has plenty of pedigree, so a difficult choice, i think for thomas bjorn. so

decisions to be made for thomas bjorn, to come in the next few days. the ryder cup starts in four weeks' time, and you can follow all the build—up on bbc world news and on the bbc sport website. denmark's football team could pick a side which will include futsal players against wales in the nations league this weekend. it is because of a dispute over commercial rights, which has seen senior players refusing to sign a new national team agreement with the danish football association. the dbu have confirmed that third—tier, fourth—tier and futsal players will make up the squad for a friendly with slovakia and then the match against wales. danish superliga and first division clubs are not included in the 24—man squad. translation: why does denmark want to send these players to slovakia? they don't want to pay a fine, or they don't want to have problems with uefa. such a match does not give us anything. translation: it's a new situation. i doubt that it has

happened in any other countries. we don't care. we know why we came here. we are facing two matches with denmark and ukraine. scotland celebrated wildly as they clinched their first—ever spot at a women's world cup finals with a dramatic victory over albania. knowing they had to better the result of group 2 leaders switzerland, who were away to poland, to qualify automatically, shelley kerr's side clung to a 2—1 lead while the swiss pushed for a winning goal. but it finished goalless in poland. and there was drama elsewhere, as norway beat european champions netherlands 2—1, meaning the norwegians qualify top of group 3, while the dutch face into the qualifiers. and in group 4, sweden won in denmark to guarantee their place as automatic qualifiers, ahead of their hosts. but it was scotland's night to celebrate. finally, jurgen klopp has delivered a special message to brendan rodgers ahead of saturday's charity match between liverpool and celtic. the pair will face off at celtic park for the match for cancer clash. it will be the first time they have seen each other since klopp took over from rodgers at anfield, when he also took the keys to his house. this is what he had to say to his landlord. it will be fun, for sure, especially

because i met my landlord. i think the first time since he left liverpool and i came here, we met. and we have a lot of things to talk about. the plumbing issue, electricity, the pool, and stuff like that. hope you are in good shape, and we can sort a few things like that. and serena williams in the last couple of minutes has beaten pliskova to reach the semifinals of the us open. she will now face the number 19 seed. so 20 times the grandslam champion, serena williams, going for another one. also in the vuelta, an intense stage on tuesday, and britain's simon yates still has

the red jersey and one second lead in the general classification. you can get all the latest sports news at our website. but, from me and the rest of the sport today team, goodbye. hello again. well, if you're heading outside over the next few hours in england and wales, chances are it's going to be pretty cloudy, and that cloud will be thick enough for some rain from this weak weather front we've got sat across the far east. otherwise, a few showers coming into western scotland from time to time over the next few hours, that rain mostly focused towards the eastern coast of norfolk and suffolk. that's where it's going to be at its heaviest. a lot of cloud for england and wales, but that's keeping the temperatures up. for the early rises, double figure temperatures, not too cold a start to the day. for scotland and northern ireland, chillier air here, but not as cold
1:56 am
as it was last night. nevertheless, a cool start. but should see some early morning sunshine for scotland and northern ireland before the cloud thickens up, and we'll start to see outbreaks of rain arriving through the afternoon, that rain turning progressively heavier, particularly across western scotland, turning wet for northern ireland. england and wales for the most part is a dry kind of day, cloud with us for most of the day, but there'll be some sunny spells coming through every now and then. temperatures high teens to low 20s. however, towards the end of the week it is going to get more unsettled. cooler and breezier, with rain at times too. here's the charts, then, for thursday. low pressure starts to form around about scotland, and that area of low pressure is going to be bringing fairly extensive outbreaks of rain across scotland, moving into northern england, and we'll see a weather front sliding its way in across wales, probably bringing some wet weather through thursday afternoon across parts of the midlands, and maybe southern counties of england as well. in between these areas, for the lucky few, we might actually stay dry, with some sunshine. but those temperatures will be edging down, so it will feel noticeably cooler, particularly so across the north

of the uk. now, towards the end of the week, the jetstream pattern amplifies. now, if we were underneath this ridge, we would have fine and dry weather, but we're not. we're underneath this trough, and within this trough, we get an area of low pressure spinning around like a washing machine right over the top of the uk. that's through friday, and on into the weekend as well. so, as you can imagine, it is going to be quite an unsettled weather picture. now, for friday, we'll see pretty extensive rain across the northern half of the uk, there could be a few showers even in the south. so an unsettled kind of day. quite breezy, quite cool as well, with temperatures coming down. we're looking at highs between 1a, maybe 19 degrees if we see some brighter weather in the south. it looks like it will continue to be unsettled, though, into the weekend, with heavy showers across the north of the uk for england and wales, a belt of heavy rain working in across saturday, probably turning a bit drier and brighter by sunday. that's your weather. welcome to bbc news.
