for sportsday but first a look at what else is coming up this evening on bbc news. we'll speak to a former cia staffer about the russian spies accused of mounting cyber attacks on high—profile organisations around the world — that's at eight o clock. we'll also be discussing how much screen time children should have — that's at twenty past eight. and later this evening we'll be taking a look at what makes the front pages of tomorrow's newspapers in the papers at10:40 and 11:30. our guests this evening are the talkradio presenter, daisy mcandrew, and katy balls, political correspondent at the spectator. that's all ahead on bbc news. now on bbc news it's time for sportsday. hello and welcome to sportsday.

introducing england's new boys — a first call up for maddison, sancho and mount to gareth southgate‘s squad. gareth bale‘s back in the wales squad, while his manager ryan giggs has given his verdict on mourinho‘s man united. they're having a tough time at the moment but change now then you'll be in the same position in a year, two yea rs. and we'll keep you up to date on the live action — celtic, arsenal, chelsea and rangers all play in the europa league. hello and welcome to sportsday. hello — good evening, thanks for tuning into sportsday. we're going to start with football because with internationals looming, there have been two big announcements from the england camp today.
6:33 pm
the first that gareth southgate has signed to remain as manager until the 2022 world cup. the other is that there are three new names in the squad to take on croatia and spain in the nations cup. they are james maddison, jadon sancho and mason mount — and theyjoin gareth southgate's 25 man band of what he says is exciting young talent. andy swiss has spent the day at st george's park. welcome to saint georges park, where it's certainly been an eventful day for gareth southgate. first, that eye—catching squad for internationals against croatia and spain, including three first—time col ups. first, wingerjadon sancho, just 18 years old, he has made its a terrific start season for borussia dortmund, helping them to be top of the bundesliga, he played in the champions league last night with a great assist, one of the most exciting talents around. secondly, james maddison, who has been so
6:34 pm
impressive for leicester city after joining from norwich over the summer. joining from norwich over the summer. three goals in seven premier league games so far at leicester. thirdly, mason mount, just 19 years old, hejoined derby county thirdly, mason mount, just 19 years old, he joined derby county on loan of the summer and again, started really well for them this season, scoring five goals so far. so three really exciting young talents but of course, in croatia and spain, england are up against heavyweight opposition. but manager gareth southgate says he has no doubt that the trio are ready. you never know with young players what their capable of until they're given an opportunity, we gave gomez a debut against brazil and he was man of the match. we have done that like the way through the last three yea rs. like the way through the last three years. it might be a little known but equally i think they have a big impact in important matches, mason mount stepped up at old trafford last week as though he had been
6:35 pm
there all his life. i think too often we hold youngsters back a bit too much, we are always trying to find the balance and the message has got to be correct, they're still at the early stages of their career with a lot of learning to do but i think it's good at this moment in time for their development to try them and see how they adapt to that as well. certainly a useful and exciting squad. the other big news today was gareth southgate's new contract which will take him through till after the 2022 world cup finals in qatar. no great surprise, bearing in mind the success he enjoyed in russia over the summer, taking england through to the semifinals for the first time 1990. sat next to southgate at the press conference this afternoon was chief executive of the fa who said that he believed that england would win the world cup at some point in the future of the crucially, he wouldn't say when. as for gareth southgate coming he is
6:36 pm
simply delighted to have the matter resolved. everyday you drive through the gates of st george's park and you kill your making a difference to english football. —— you feel your making a difference. everyone knows what we're trying to do. it's an honour to lead your country and to be able to do that for another four yea rs be able to do that for another four years is hugely exciting for me. gareth southgate's contract taking him through until 2022. but any short—term committee will be focusing on the upcoming matches in a week on friday and lenin spent the following monday, a youthful and imaginative squad he'll be taking with him. —— and in spain the following monday. sancho plays football in germany, so perhaps the fans have not had a chance to see why he is impressed so much. and there, i spoke to a
6:37 pm
journalist from dw sports in germany to find a bit more about him. jadon sancho has had an explosive start to the bundesliga season despite the fa ct the bundesliga season despite the fact that he hasn't made a single start in the receiver dortmund line—up so farand start in the receiver dortmund line—up so far and has only played 124 minutes, he is already had six assists and one goal. those numbers are phenomenal and it's notjust numbers. his ability, confidence, the way he takes players on, is just incredible given the fact that he is just 18. i think southgate has proven that he is one of those managers that is willing to give youngsters a chance if they are good enough and i think sancho has shown that in his current form, its just impossible not to call him up. i have been to dortmund yesterday, where dortmund beat monaco 3—0 and he is just where dortmund beat monaco 3—0 and he isjust quick, he's where dortmund beat monaco 3—0 and he is just quick, he's fast, where dortmund beat monaco 3—0 and he isjust quick, he's fast, he's dribbling past players, very, very confident and passing and crossing

ability are pretty incredible given the fact that he is, again, just 18, playing football, just... well, less than one season, actually. england play croatia and spain this month. wales, meanwhile, face spain, too, and the republic of ireland in their upcoming international. ryan giggs named his squad today. let's take a look. good news for wales fans is that gareth bale is back on that starting line—up despite missing champions league action this week because of an injury. let's have a listen to what ryan giggs had to say about the fact that ba iley‘s giggs had to say about the fact that bailey's back in, will be facing spain, the country where he played clu b spain, the country where he played club football. tough time at the moment, but and then you will be in the same position in a year, two yea rs, the same position in a year, two years, quite possibly. i believe that he should keep hisjob

years, quite possibly. i believe that he should keep his job and... years, quite possibly. i believe that he should keep hisjob and... i think the problem has been of late, for planning. so just think the problem has been of late, for planning. sojust going think the problem has been of late, for planning. so just going through a tough time, but my stance hasn't changed. and unsurprisingly, giggs was also asked about the current cyber manchester united, their worst start at the season in 29 years, jose mourinho became increasingly unhappy in his job jose mourinho became increasingly unhappy in hisjob and with his players, but giggs says united should not let him go. going through a tough time at the moment but, you know, change enough then you will be in the same position in a year, two yea rs, in the same position in a year, two years, quite possibly. so i believe that he should keep hisjob years, quite possibly. so i believe that he should keep his job and... years, quite possibly. so i believe that he should keep hisjob and... i think the problem has been of late of forward planning, so just going through a tough time but my stance hasn't changed. quite different from

what paul scholes had to say. its a busy night for british clubs in the europa league this evening. chelsea and rangers are in action later on but a couple of games already well under way. arsenal are in azerbaijan where they've had a great start against qarabag. sokratis getting on the end of this corner to give them the lead in the first few moments of the game. 1—0 it remains there. there was an even quicker goal for celtic against salzburg. odsonne edouard giving them the lead in under two minutes. they are still ahead with half—time approaching, we will keep you up—to—date on that. england have included three uncapped players in their squad for the icc women's world t20 taking place in the caribbean next month. left arm spinners kirstie gordon and linsey smith receive their first call—ups along with batter sophia dunkley, but they'll be without experienced wicket keeper sarah taylor, who is taking a break from the sport with anxiety. jo currie has been at lords for us. the home of english cricket. next

month, english woman will be swapping this place for the sunny shores of the west indies for the t20 world cup. and after they claim the title in the one—day format of the title in the one—day format of the game last year, england have the chance to be crowned world champions. in a moment, we will hear from the captain, heather knight, but first he is the coach who today announced his squad. we dream to win. there is no point going if you don't believe in plan and dream to win. so that's all we've been really thinking of for the last year, we have had other games to win the summer but our focus since the new year has been on trying to shape up for the t20. as someone who won't be on tour, sarah taylor, it was a mutual decision, health comes first. how is sarah? calum a lot better than she has been previously, what we have tried to do with her is recognise where she isn't the last thing we want to do is make a go

back to a point where she has to ta ke back to a point where she has to take a lengthy time out again. she will continue to train, one year away and hopefully be fit to pitting thejudge on again in away and hopefully be fit to pitting the judge on again in the away and hopefully be fit to pitting thejudge on again in the new away and hopefully be fit to pitting the judge on again in the new year. i have a bit of a point to prove, we wa nt i have a bit of a point to prove, we want to go and show we can do t20 cricket. we are different team to the one that got knocked out of the semifinal two years ago, for us, it feels like we've made a lot of changes since then and it's almost the making of the team. and they fly out to saint lucia on the 24th of that harbour. they then have if few warm up matches before the first proper match of the treatment gets under way against sri lanka on the 10th of november and that's when the real ha rd 10th of november and that's when the real hard work begins. —— they fly out on the 24th of october. england's men have arrived in sri lanka ahead of theirfirst one day warm up match on friday. it's just over three weeks since the fifth test against india finished at the oval. jonny bairstow — who plays for the test and one day sides — has played 91 days of international cricket since first

september last year, raising concerns about the workload of the modern player. i'm happy with my game. at the moment. but there is these areas you wa nt to moment. but there is these areas you want to keep improving on. you want to keep busy in forward with your cricket and you want to keep pushing yourself, i think it's a great opportunity to do that. it's something that obviously, if you look back 18 months ago, you wouldn't necessarily have been standing here saying those words and it's great that it has gone so well. but i want to keep it going in the right direction. carragher the energy levels of this site eyeslj will energy levels of this site eyes” will put that back onto you, how are your energy levels? i'm sure you're working hard, and surely enjoyed the couple of weeks you had off, and likewise the guys do exactly the same. you've got to take a step back, take a step away and refresh and come back excited about playing cricket. that's exactly what we had to do over these last two weeks. coming into the tour with the heat and conditions in sri lanka,

it's going to be tough. mentally tough and physically tough, and coming into it fresh and excited is the main thing. also coming up in the programme... all eyes on the grand final — superleague's play—off semi—finals start tonight with st helens against warrington. and in black history month, we meet the rider blazing a trail in the world of dressage. time for a look at the other sports stories around today. and australian marcus fraser and england's matt wallace share the lead after day one of the dunhill links championship. the other headline of the day was that a woman was injured by a stray ball hit by tyrell hatton just days after a woman was blinded in one eye by a ball at the ryder cup. two weeks after being left out of eddiejones's england training squad, danny cipriani has been named premiership player of the month for september. he was arrested and fined for assault and resisting arrest on a pre—season tour

injersey in august, butjones said he picked other players ahead of him purely based on form. the first of super league's play—off semi finals takes place tonight — super league winners st helens host warrington wolves, and then tomorrow, the second semi—final sees wigan take on castleford. earlier i caught up with our rugby league correspondent dave woods to find out whether, after dominating the league, st helen's are favourites to reach the grand final tonight. they will be favourites and they should be. and throughout the season they have been the best team without a shadow of doubt. the last few weeks at the top eight, they have had nothing to play for, it has been a bit ofa had nothing to play for, it has been a bit of a phoney war and they might have lost a bit of form. but we have seen them regaining a bit of that, and then barbara looks like he's back at the top of his game. so they will start favourites. ringtone have lost three times and have something to prove. new coach, they were slow

starters but now they look more like the real deal. it should be close but st helens are just about favourites. that is tonight. then we have wooden castleford tomorrow. it'll be a hugely emotional night because it is shown when's last game in charge of wigan. he has been in every position at the club he has played for them, assistant coach and now he has the top job but he's leaving to take up a position with the scottish rugby union and hit will be such an occasion. it will be an electrifying atmosphere because he's not the only one who is leaving, he is longer serving coach in the modern era of wigan, but also sam tomkins, one of their iconic players in the last few years, is also leaving to catalan, and john bateman who is a huge character was in that team is going to australia. soa in that team is going to australia. so a lot of emotion there and they have said in the club that they can use that emotion, it might bring out a little bit extra from the team as a little bit extra from the team as a whole because they are paying for their team—mates, their coach who are leaving. but you cannot write castleford. they got to the grand

final last year and lost it when eve ryo ne final last year and lost it when everyone thought they were going to do really well. this year they're looking a bit more robust, they still have the capability of playing some great, attractive rugby league but they look more as well. and they have talked within their camp about eve ryo ne have talked within their camp about everyone focusing on wigan, what about us? so they might use that psychology, that resource psychology of everyone ignoring them to list their game. —— reverse psychology. and they know the pain of losing having lost last year. they lost, they lost badly against leeds, this year, they want to win, maybe it's their year to win. he will be in the grand final conflict either tauber? ifi grand final conflict either tauber? if i could predict it with any a ccu ra cy if i could predict it with any accuracy i would be a rich man! literally any two from four, too close to call and a great grand final whoever gets there. four very well—balanced and equal teams. final whoever gets there. four very well-balanced and equal teams. enjoy the next couple of days. we will. kick—off at st helens at 7:45pm this

evening. here on bbc sport we're marking black history month with a series of features looking at a number of black athletes who are making a name for themselves in a variety of sports. today, we meed dannie morgan, who followed his dream to be a top equestrian — and now he's winning rosettes in both eventing and dressage. i'm not from a horsey background at all. my mum was a single parent with three boys. we did not always make life easierfor her three boys. we did not always make life easier for her but she was fantastic. i went horse trial with a friend when i was 14 and i remember watching in being so inspired by the top riders and thought, i would love top riders and thought, i would love to be able to do this. as i left college, i didn't have a huge amount of financial support so i thought, how am! of financial support so i thought, how am i going to get into the industry and compete and do all the things i wanted to do? i was fortu nate things i wanted to do? i was fortunate enough to get a job with adele. i never c me without a brush
6:49 pm
in my hand, i wanted to prove that this was a really wanted to do. if i hadn't had that opportunity would have been really tough for me to get into the industry. i teach various people, it gives you a real buzz to help someone that wants to learn and try and improve them and the horse's partnership, it gives you a buzz, too, to help them achieve their goals. it was great abbey national is, i had a few horses qualified. we didn't have ideal weather conditions, it was really blustery and high blowing winds. we were sixth in the medium goal championship, that was really good. this was the rosette we won a national last week. these changes look nice. feeling really solid. to come from nowhere on the dressage team, helping produce young horses to dressage, it was great to see. it was a bit different. goodbye!
6:50 pm
it was great, i can try and do well and tries inspired people, and if you work and the opportunities will come. i would you work and the opportunities will come. iwould be you work and the opportunities will come. i would be lying if i said that i would love to get to the olympics, it would be most riders dream, olympics or championships at least. i will keep working hard and see where it takes me. one to watch for the future. that's all from sportsday. just time to tell you before i go, celtic lead 1—0 at salisbury, arsenal also 1—0 up. more on bbc
