associate editor camilla tominey. that's all ahead on bbc news. now on bbc news, it's time for sportsday. hello. i'm olly foster at the bbc sport centre. here's what's coming up tonight: ronaldo‘s return to manchester — we'll head live to old trafford shortly. we have heard from mourinho, and you just know how much he loves facing the media. i don't like this press conference. and kiki bertens — an injury replacement at the world tour finals — beats the number one seed in singapore. also coming up in the programme: lewis hamilton will have to wait for another world title. number five will come, but there's a warning from a formula i legend that he might not

win any more. hello and welcome to sportsday. good evening. the champions league group stage reaches the halfway point this week. manchester united have won one and drawn one, and lie second in their group behind juventus. they will face the italian champions twice over the next fortnight. they have had some brilliant encounters down the years. united beat them in the 1999 semifinals on the way to becoming european champions. tonight sees cristiano ronaldo face his former side again. his winner at old trafford for real madrid knocked united out in the last 16 five years ago. he's now a juve player. his new club have stood by him as he fights a rape allegation — something he has denied.
6:33 pm
he was given time off during the recent international break with portugal, but tomorrow's match against united wasn't one that he was going to miss. let's cross live to old trafford and speak to our correspondent, david ornstein. good evening, david. we have heard from cristiano ronaldo in the last couple of minutes. we have indeed. juventus arrived at manchester airport around an hour ago, travelled straight to old trafford. cristiano ronaldo and his team—mates took a look around the pitch and then cristiano ronaldo went in to then cristiano ronaldo went in to the pre—match news conference. it is the pre—match news conference. it is the first time he has spoken since these rape allegations. las vegas police have reopened a sexual assault investigation from 2009 at the request of a woman who has said she was raped by cristiano ronaldo.
6:34 pm
he has dismissed these reports. he says they are fake news, and insisted his conscience is clear. it was what he had to say about it today. you didn't listen what i say but i am happy, man. this is not... the statement, we give two weeks ago, if i'm not wrong. sol the statement, we give two weeks ago, if i'm not wrong. so i am glad. of course, i'm not going to lie on this situation. i am very happy. my lawyers, they are confidence, and of course i am, too. so the most important is i enjoyed the football, i enjoy my life. the rest, i have people who take care of my life, and of course the truth always coming in first position. sol of course the truth always coming in first position. so i am good.|j think we can still speak to david. david, we have heard from cristiano

ronaldo, holding court once again at old trafford. juventus bought him and they've won so many league titles, but they brought him to make the difference in europe, because they've had a couple of near misses. is this a good time to face manchester united 7 jose is this a good time to face manchester united? jose mourinho was his old boss at real madrid, but mourinho has been fighting so many fires recently. he has had four results, fa charges, a bit of a flare—up at stamford bridge over the weekend... yes, not the best time forjose mourinho. on the page, manchester united have won just one out of six matches, but the morale boosting victory against newcastle gave them some believe, and going to chelsea and coming from behind, although we saw the drama at the end, leading the fa today to remind jose mourinho of his responsibilities. a member of the chelsea backroom staff has been
6:36 pm
charged with improper conduct. mourinho escaped punishment on this occasion, but he has an fa charge hanging over him over comments he made into a television camera after the newcastle game. he has until wednesday to respond. this will be a huge night for mourinho, reunited against his compatriot, cristiano ronaldo. rivaldo, as you said, wanting to bring the champions league title to juventus. wanting to bring the champions league title tojuventus. he has won it five times more than any other player. hejoined juventus it five times more than any other player. he joined juventus from real madrid this summer for 112 million euros, £99.2 million, open to sprinkle some stardust on this juventus team, which has won the last seven italian league titles, and they are already flying this season. and they are already flying this season. mourinho spoke about ronaldo and a number of other subjects in his news conference earlier, but he wa nted his news conference earlier, but he wanted to focus on the match. his news conference earlier, but he wanted to focus on the matchm
6:37 pm
doesn't need these questions and these answers. it is one of the best players of all time is, and nobody can tell different from that. he is one of the best players of all times, simple as that. there will be a lot of focus on paul pogba, coming up a lot of focus on paul pogba, coming up against his former club. how different is heat of the play you bought two years ago and have he developed and matured in the way you hoped? i don't like this press conference. i don't want to speak about pogba or any individuals. i don't want to speak about the spanish because they are uninterested in real madrid and ronaldo. i learned to play against one of the big clubs in the world, one of the big clubs in the world, one of the biggest candidates of winning the competition. that is
6:38 pm
what motivates me and brings me here. manchester united's last european defeat at old trafford came backin european defeat at old trafford came back in march 2013, and lacklustre real madrid. the winning goal—scorer was ronaldo, withjose mourinho in charge of real madrid that night. juventus, on the other hand, haven't lost a n juventus, on the other hand, haven't lost an away match in any competition since november last year, so it should be a cracking match here under the lights. 8pm kick tomorrow night. juventus are top of that champions league group, two points clear of united. united will want another famous european night at old trafford. that should be fantastic. there's one match in the premier league tonight — arsenal are at home to leicester city. a win for the gunners would see them move back into the top four. after losing their first two matches of the season, they are on a roll, with nine wins in a row in all competitions. arsenal is a very good team, and
6:39 pm
they have problems, but they are very competitive. they have very good players. and we need every single player that i know, so our mentality together, to win more strong than the last matches. we've already had six rounds in the fa cup this season, but in the next 20 minutes the draw is made for the first round proper. that's when the 48 teams in leagues 1 and 2 come into the competition joining 32 non—league teams who have made it this far. the draw is being held at hitchin town fc. the hertfordshire club still have to face leatherhead in a replay to reach round one. dion dublin will be taking part in proceedings at top field, and i spoke to him earlier. this is the big time for a lot of
6:40 pm
these smaller clubs in stature, but this is why we love the fa cup and we loved it so much as old pros. you get a chance to play at proper football clu bs get a chance to play at proper football clubs like this. the excitement is starting to build. still a lot of replays, a lot of names in the hat. six teams from the seventh tier, including the metropolitan police, who beat haven't and waterlooville, one of the big shocks from the fourth round of qualifying. yeah, it will be a long and i want to say laborious draw, but we've got to get everybody out and make sure we get the right people. there are a feud ties still to be sorted out, but i think we will get it right for you. i'm pretty sure and i hope we get the right teams for the right teams. some big teams in there, portsmouth,
6:41 pm
former winners, and you look at the likes of sunderland, their massive stadium, that would be a plum tie for one of those non—league teams, ina way for one of those non—league teams, in a way trip to sunderland. for one of those non—league teams, in a way trip to sunderlandlj for one of those non—league teams, in a way trip to sunderland. i know. sunderland have sort of gone from better there, but the stadium is still there and it would be an amazing experience for smaller club to play there. portsmouth have done the same thing, and from sort of top to bottom, so to speak, but still a massive football club with huge support. yes, the smaller clubs thinking to themselves, if we can getan thinking to themselves, if we can get an away draw somewhere like that, it would be nice for the old confidence. have you worked out how you are going to wangle a decent draw for a couple of your former clu bs, draw for a couple of your former clubs, cambridge united for coventry, perhaps? two of my teams. i think coventry will be ok. cambridge united could do with some
6:42 pm
good fortune. it hasn't gone their way of late. i will do my best for them, that's all i can say. the fa cup first round draw — live on bbc two from 7pm this evening. you can also follow it on the bbc sport website. also coming up in the programme: great britain are reigning olympic hockey champions. we hearfrom their rio captain about a new european competition that could be good news for british clubs. and spot the difference — why did cardiff and glasgow play in the same colours for their european champions cup match? lewis hamilton really should have been recovering from a title—winning party today. everything was set up for him to win in texas at the us grand prix and secure a fifth formula 1 world championship. he'd won five of the previous six races at the circuit of the americas.
6:43 pm
things didn't quite go to plan. his mercedes was sitting on pole, and hejust had to get eight more points than his nearest rival, sebastian vettel. but a bad start and a questionable pit stop strategy cost him. he was overtaken by ferrari's kimi raikkonen on the first corner. the firm went on to claim his first win for five and a half years. vettel spun on the first lap and dropped to 15th, but fourth place in the end was enough to keep the championship alive. hamilton made it onto the podium in third, but the title race moves on to mexico. what does this all mean for the standings? hamilton is 70 points clear
6:44 pm
of sebastian vettel. vettel would need to win the remaining three races and secure 75 points and hope that hamilton effectively breaks down three times or finishes way down the points. these are the three races we've got yet to go this season. hamilton won the title in mexico last year. he has won at all three of these circuits. here's what hamilton had to say after the race. by by the time i caught up, the tyres we re by the time i caught up, the tyres were dead. it went from bad to worse throughout the race. but i kept fighting and pushing to try and
6:45 pm
catch up, but at the end it was fighting for second place. a fifth world title, which will inevitably come, takes hamilton closer to the michael schumacher record of seven world titles, so will he go for that record? well, he has a lot going on outside of racing, with his own fashion label and he's also been dabbling in the music industry. all of this build—up towards, is his focus perhaps slipping away from motorsport? another formula 1 racing legend, sirjackie stewart, reckons that might be a distraction. he might not be able to be in a position to push on to make it a magic seven. heel burn—out because, as the success heel burn—out because, as the success brings, now he is going into
6:46 pm
clothing and other things, he loves music, and sooner or later you get tired of it. i did. i got tired of it at tired of it. i did. i got tired of itata tired of it. i did. i got tired of it at a young age, 3a years of age. and i went other things. like in most sports, you burn out and he will burn out. he will choose to retire. world number two angelique kerber suffered a shock defeat to the netherlands' kiki bertens on day two of the wta tour finals. kerber is the top seed in singapore after simona halep pulled out injured and she took the first set 6—1. but bertens, who was only called into the finals because of halep's injury, completed a terrific comeback winning the final two sets 6—3, 6—4. it's her 11th win over a top 10 player this year — that's the most on the women's tour. american sloane stephens beat reigning us open champion naomi osaka in three sets. both players were making their debut at the season—ending tournament but, after two tight sets,
6:47 pm
it was stephens who finished strongest in the decider. she broke osaka three times, taking the final set 6—1. a champions league—style competition will start next year for the top women's teams in europe. the european hockey league has benefited the men's game for over a decade and there will be equal prize money on offer for women's teams. kate richardson—walsh captained the british team to gold at the rio olympics. i spoke to her earlier. dhl in 2007, and it has been ground—breaking, and they have blazed a trail for international hockeyin blazed a trail for international hockey in terms of its format and the technology and the umpiring and officiating. i think the level of play is therefore risen. u nfortu nately, play is therefore risen. unfortunately, women's hockey has lagged behind, so it is great news we now have parity. what group you
6:48 pm
will be given equal billing but, as you go towards the final eight, the climax of that tournament, and equal prize money as well. i think equal prize money as well. i think equal prize money as well. i think equal prize money is important, but it's also the outlet, the opportunity for players to be out there and show themselves, and it will attract the world's best players into those european sides and then sponsors will want to get involved. how much do you think the women's game in the uk domestic league is lagging behind those european powerhouses of the netherlands and germany? they have sponsors, big banks that sponsor clu bs, sponsors, big banks that sponsor clubs, so they are able to train on a more professional basis, train four or five a more professional basis, train four orfive times a a more professional basis, train four or five times a week with their domestic clubs and then play at the weekend. in the men's league, the domestic league, players get paid some money and, for the first time, some money and, for the first time, some women's players are getting some women's players are getting some money. the more that changes and the more professional training and the more professional training and coaching can be, so i think the
6:49 pm
standard will improve you felt you had to go abroad to further your career and play at the standard you felt he deserved to be playing at. what impact long—term deal think there will be an the british game?|j think there will be an the british game?” think the ehl and the female version, i believe there will be more interest, money and sponsorship and support put around the women's domestic clubs, and i think they will have a target to aim for, and it's great for those clubs and it will attract players and sponsors, andi will attract players and sponsors, and i think it will attract coaches. for a youngster at surbiton or wherever, they can look up and go, they can be playing against the best european teams, live streamed with prize money and big sponsors, i want to do that, i want to play in that europeans champions league. it is good to have that role modelling, to be able to see it and be it and now we've got that in place, it will make a difference domestically.

organisers of rugby union's champions cup say they will apologise to cardiff blues and glasgow warriors after they told the sides to wear kits that were almost an identical colour. glasgow changed from their usual black strip to one that's sky blue — pretty much the same shade as the home side, cardiff blues! glasgow won the match 29—12, but it was difficult for players, officials and spectators to see which team was which. wales legend martyn williams was commentating on the game. he said it was the most difficult one he'd ever had to call! a local mp for cardiff had this to say. kevin brennan called the whole incident "pathetic amateurism that ruined it for the fans". peterjackson is a writer at the rugby paper. he also points to how the incident undermines the professionalism that the champions cup is meant to represent. finally a picture that sums it up — from nigel, who was watching at the cardiff arms park. he says, "surely someone, anyone, before the game must have thought — those kits look a bit similar".
