6:31 pm
i'm hugh ferris. our headlines this evening. after weeks in the spotlight for reasons he doesn't want, cristiano ronaldo is back in familiar surroundings tonight to face his old club with his new one. manchester city are far away from home. but for them too, it's still familiar. they're back in ukraine to play shakhtar donetsk for the second season in a row. england suffer their biggest ever one day defeat, losing by 219 runs against sri lanka. also coming up in the programme... the team with the best regular season record and the one that's back for the second year in a row. the red sox and the dodgers get ready for the world series. thanks forjoining us on sportsday.
6:32 pm
he's still very popular in manchester, well, one half of manchester. but he might be less so by the end of the evening. cristiano ronaldo has been back before with real madrid and scored the winner. will it happen again withjuventus? the italian champions are at old trafford to play manchester united in the champions league. and so is our reporter david ornstein. back at a place that still holds him in high regard. indeed and welcome to the so—called theatre of dreams were one man will ta ke ce ntre theatre of dreams were one man will take centre stage tonight. cristiano ronaldo. when juventus take centre stage tonight. cristiano ronaldo. whenjuventus landed in manchester yesterday they came straight here to old trafford, the players took a walk around the pitch and ronaldo looked quite emotional. he took to social media posting a
6:33 pm
picture of himself saying, thanks for the warm welcome, always feel at home here. he really is held in the highest regard, it is a place where he spent six years and was the winner of three premier league titles before he left for real madrid for a then world record £80 million in 2009. he is now a six times on the winner, six times champions league winner, he really made his name here at old trafford. and yesterday he was put up for the news c0 nfe re nce we re and yesterday he was put up for the news conference were for the first time he spoke about the rape allegations which he denies but his focus was firmly on the match itself. ronaldo is not coming back here just to itself. ronaldo is not coming back herejust to enjoy itself. ronaldo is not coming back here just to enjoy the spectacle, he wa nts to here just to enjoy the spectacle, he wants to win. we know it is going to be tough but i think if we play well, if we play well but coach once
6:34 pm
well, if we play well but coach once we have a good chance to win the game. but we have to respect manchester united because they are a fantastic team. they have an experienced coach. sol fantastic team. they have an experienced coach. so i look forward to juventus experienced coach. so i look forward tojuventus winning experienced coach. so i look forward to juventus winning the experienced coach. so i look forward tojuventus winning the game. united have been box office so far this season, not necessarily for the right reasons. but this game will test their ability. it will. manchester united have won just one of their last six matches, juventus on the other hand, they have a 100% start of only checked by the draw on saturday when of course ronaldo scored one of his many goals. manchester united have been under huge pressure and when it comes to the champions league this season comes to the champions league this season they beat young boys in their opening game but then they drew in disappointing fashion against valencia. juventus have beaten both of those sides and they are top of theirgroup,
6:35 pm
of those sides and they are top of their group, two points clear of manchester united. they won the last seven consecutive italian titles and this really will be a massive test for manchester united. romelu lukaku, bury striker, was speaking yesterday and he says this united side is still a work in progress. i'm still in a phase where i have been there since i was 16, the players know me much more. but i still think teamwork between myself and my team is getting better and better something we're working on. the players need to know me, know my movements and i need to know their movements and i need to know their movements and i need to know their movements and when that starts to quick i think the results will also come. manchester united have only lost at home in the european match once in their last 22 matches. that was back in march against real madrid. again ronaldo the scorer.
6:36 pm
the manager that night wasjose mourinho. juventus have not lost away in any competition since november 2017. the kick—off is at eight o'clock. manchester united will want to create another famous european night under the lights here at old trafford. well manchester united haven't played juventus for nearly 15 years. but manchester city are revisiting a place they were last in only 10 months ago. they played shakhtar donetsk in last season's‘ champions league as well and lost in ukraine. a similar result this time would be their second defeat in the group stage. will perry is there for us. welcome to the home ground of shakhtar donetsk. both sides are
6:37 pm
defending domestic champions and currently top of their league this season. currently top of their league this season. of course all eyes will be on season. of course all eyes will be o n eve nts season. of course all eyes will be on events at old trafford in that game between manchester united and juventus but this is a big game from manchester city and they cannot afford to lose it if they are to have any hope of route winning group f. the build—up has been dominated by ten talk of pep guardiola saying his team are not ready to win the champions league. he mentioned that before and i asked him to elaborate last night. you have to have everybody pushed, notjust last night. you have to have everybody pushed, not just the manager but everyone. and still we do not have that feeling. i think that we are a good team. a really good team and it is a pleasure to be with them. but that competition need something special and i do not feel it. while many may not be convinced
6:38 pm
that he does not mean what he says, potentially some mind games for his own players or a rallying cry for the manchester city fans who have at times struggled to fill the etihad stadium on big night. well he was appointed to win the champions league and failed in his three seasons to lift the trophy that bayern munich. he will have a burning desire to put that right at the city whether he thinks they're ready or not. so both manchester clubs play tonight. but plenty of games to look forward to, including at the bernabeu where real madrid have theirfirst ever competitive meeting with viktoria plzen. real managerjulen lopetegui is under considerable pressure after three straight defeats. and it's approaching half time in the early games. 0ne one goal, valencia leading at young

boys. you're watching sportsday on bbc news. the swimmer dealing with epilepsy and the even bigger problems that success brings. all that to come... and we are alive outside fenway park as the world series is due to get under way. can the la dodgers dodged the green monster, find out soon. but first, england might have won the series, but sri lanka delivered the final blow. they handed england their heaviest ever one day international defeat in the fifth match in colombo, with not even the rain saving the tourists. sri lanka's 366 for 6 was their highest score against england,
6:40 pm
who made a number of changes for the game. and after the heavens opened late on, they were 132 for 9, condemning them to a 219 run defeat. joe lynskey reports. sri lanka have toiled with the bat and with the weather in this series but this dead rubber saw them finally end the downpour. the home side up to 137 before losing their first wicket. and the england breakthrough brought in more big hitters. the home side got to their biggest score in two years in one—day internationals and even for this england team chasing, they saw three wickets for in the first two overs. joss butler was captain for the day and lasted just two balls. whenjo the day and lasted just two balls. when jo wood the day and lasted just two balls. whenjo wood went england were 28 forfour and only whenjo wood went england were 28
6:41 pm
for four and only 67 added from ben stokes made their innings look respectable. the deficit in the runs needed england's heaviest defeat in one—day cricket, result but no one saw coming and found in more familiarfashion. the saw coming and found in more familiar fashion. the series saw coming and found in more familiarfashion. the series in saw coming and found in more familiar fashion. the series in the monsoon season ending with the covers on, for england when the rain clears they will have to paper over the cracks. it really was one hell of a heating. mel farrell is alongside me. fitting that it all ends in the rain because that it all ends in the rain because that has been the dominating feature of this series. by strange result to end a series during which england we re end a series during which england were feeling pretty good until today. what will they have learned from today question mark well england made a few changes before this match because of the rain.
6:42 pm
batters in particularjust had had no time out there, moeen ali had faced a finger couple of balls and joss butler faced 2a so he was in as captain. glamorgan decided to rest himself, always a bit of a controversial thing because what does that say about the importance of this team if it is a dead rubber. so they brought in some players to have a look at them and give them some time, to push them up the water. but i'm not sure exactly how much you learn from that, if you're looking ahead to the world cup which they clearly are. how much are you going tojudge on they clearly are. how much are you going to judge on this one game. they clearly are. how much are you going tojudge on this one game. and basically they got thrashed, their biggest defeat in a one—day international when batting second. so that is pretty big. if you think about the world cup next year, in very different conditions in england, they do have some extra series between now and then to home the squad but it was a bowling chance today, some of those fringe bowlers did make their mark and they
6:43 pm
really did not. no one really did, liam plunkett was brought back into the side and you feel they had to play him because he organised his wedding around... he was on honeymoon! they'd changed the tests and the one—day internationals around so they had to give them one game really. i do not know if we lacked anything about liam plunkett, you imagine that he would be in that squad for next year barring injury. there have been questions about opening combinations and where the batting line—up is an even what their best bowling line—up is. having enough bowlers to choose from to get their best 11. some questions still about that. and we will see if
6:44 pm
they are answered when they take on sri lanka. thank you. let's bring you some of the other sports headlines today... and caroline wozniacki got the defence of her wta finals title back on track with victory over petra kvitova. the australian open champion was beaten in her tournament opener by karolina pliskova at the weekend... but won her second round robin match this afternoon in three sets. it's her first victory over the two—time wimbledon winner since 2014. in the day's other match in singapore... elina svitolina made it two wins from two after she saw off karolina pliskova in three sets. her place in the semi—final is not yet secure as there's one more round of games in this group on thursday. the next three domestic rugby union seasons in england will be extended to include in—season breaks, in attempt to protect players. but the premiership season has been extended to run from early—to—mid september to mid—to—late june, with players limited to a maximum of 35 matches per campaign — apart from in a world cup year. and england netball have been given what's been

described as a ‘lifeline' after their current sponsors doubled their investment in the sport. they are commonwelth champions but there were major concerns over funding their players fulltime with a home world cup coming up next year. they've secured a new three—year deal that will pay for the national team's fulltime contracts beyond 2019. now the weather in the uk might not have been particularly autumnal in recent weeks... but in the states regardless of the temperature... it's an event that'll always be known as the fall classic. the world series starts tonight with the boston red sox at home in game one against the los angeles dodgers. fenway park will also host game two... with the red sox having the better regular season record... before the next three — if needed in la — and if it's still not decided... games six and seven are back in boston... where we'll go now to speak to chris mitchell... who'll be covering the whole series for us... two very famous names of the sport... this could be a special

world series. we have the world series every year but this time it is huge, a massive series because you have the cornerstones of american sport if you like, boston on the east coast and almost 3000 miles away on the west coast los angeles. the really exciting thing about the series is that they have never met in the modern—day in a world series, it is over 100 years since they met in the big one, the full hasek. so too the biggest spending names, battling it out in one of the oldest arenas in america for major—league sport. fe nway america for major—league sport. fenway park, built in 1916. 1912, rather. these guys are trying to get tickets, how long have you been waiting? well we have been waiting since five o'clock this morning, we
6:47 pm
came back around noon and got these vouchers because so many people are in line that now you need a voucher to get a ticket. this is not even the ticket. just a ticket to get a ticket. wimbledon of course you will remember those queues outside wimbledon and this is something similar. forfans wimbledon and this is something similar. for fans of wimbledon and this is something similar. forfans of red sox, they seem very similar. forfans of red sox, they seem very confident and they are the favourites and rightly so. they had the best regular—season record but they come up against a la dodgers tea m they come up against a la dodgers team who made the world series last year and they came up just short, evenin year and they came up just short, even in seven games. so they have had a dress rehearsal if you like. is there anyway la dodgers can win this one? no! no way they can win. but they do have a very good chance. this will go to seven games i believe and back here in boston it will be even colder by then. next to the swimmer who nearly lost her life at the pool.

it took a year to diagnose imogen clark as epileptic and in that time she had to be rescued from the water. but five years on the teenager who was told not to swim has gone on to become the fourth fastest in the world. and when she won her first major medal this summer, she had another issue to overcome. it was just one morning i was swimming along and had a seizure at the bottom of the pool. there was no diagnosis at the hospital, theyjust called it a teenage episode. then a year later i had a lot of clusters, one really bad one in the pool where i had to be resuscitated on the poolside and eventually we found out it was epilepsy. when i got told i did not really understand, did not know what it was and it was hard for me because i thought, can i still swim but i just me because i thought, can i still swim but ijust went down in tears, and remember getting back home and i
6:49 pm
was like no, why should i be upset, i will be this. if you wanted so much you can do anything. i had a lot of electrodes all over my chest and my head. it did not stop me one bit. i was in the gym pretty much every day and i did not care if people could see my wires, ijust love the training so i did not stop. imagine clark of great britain, a silver medal. when i took the silver medal i could not believe it, i was like, oh no, and then, i'vejust come second at the european games! i was ina come second at the european games! i was in a field with world—class athletes, the best in the world. and i'm just a normal girl from derbyshire. it is not nice to know all my family were watching and i could make them proud because i
6:50 pm
would not be here without. five minutes before the ceremony i was thinking i cannot go on stage with 25 cameramen with their flashing lights. we got the doctor to stand by and thankfully it was brilliant. they told all the cameramen to turn off theirflashing they told all the cameramen to turn off their flashing lights. they told all the cameramen to turn off theirflashing lights. i do not know if many people noticed but that's something i have to to keep myself safe. the new commonwealth re cord myself safe. the new commonwealth record holder... it does not matter if you have epilepsy, you can do anything. you have got to be in control, not let epilepsy control you. incredible inspirational story. that's all from sportsday.
