this is bbc news i'm lukwesa burak. the headlines at five. a gunman opens fire in a synagogue in the us town of pittsburgh, it's reported there are multiple casualties. this is the scene live, police say the gunman is now in custody, president trump says he's monitoring events closely. i don't know there is a special event, but on the typical somewhere between 16 and 100 people i guess. is now in custody, president trump says he's monitoring events closely. reports in the pittsburgh say that
5:01 pm
there have been multiple casualties after a shooting in the synagogue. they say the shooter who was inside has been taken into custody. he entered the synagogue during a saturday morning service. the go to oui’ saturday morning service. the go to our correspondent who joins us from washington. what more can you tell us? the shots were first reported about two hours ago, in pittsburgh. as the jewish community about two hours ago, in pittsburgh. as thejewish community was attending saturday morning services attending saturday morning services at the tree of life congregation synagogue in a residential suburb on the edge of pittsburgh. a very affluent suburb that is home to a quite largejewish affluent suburb that is home to a quite large jewish community. affluent suburb that is home to a quite largejewish community. the motive behind this attack, it is appear that the jewish community motive behind this attack, it is appear that thejewish community has been targeted here. they describe as an active shooter situation with a
5:02 pm
command and woman on the loose. they have swamped that area with armed officers to track down whoever was responsible and bring them safely into custody but that took some time. there was something of a manhunt, something of a standoff and people in the area were warned to stay at home and keep himself safe to stay away from the synagogue, but we understand now that the suspect has been brought into custody, although three police officers have been injured in the process. we still do not have confirmation of the people wounded or killed, but we do know that this has been a fatal incident and that there are perhaps multiple fatalities as a result of the shooting. we know also that the political atmosphere is very tense at the moment and there is a concern about attacks on notjust at the moment and there is a concern about attacks on not just synagogue but many different groups living in
5:03 pm
the united states. has there been an increased bill in attacks on religious institutions? their hats. indeed. specifically, there has been a rise in anti—semitic attacks. the figures have been higher than they've been in 25 years. in some link back to the tone of political debate in this country, the divisive nature of the way politics has gone across the states and the last couple of years. two things to think about, there are gun attacks all the time the states and there are questions about gun control. now is this an attack that fits into that sort of profile? is there a religious motivation to this attack was not worth their also perhaps a political motivation here? because this has been a tense week after political figures were sent bombs through the post. we saw a man brought into custody yesterday under suspicion, a man that had links with
5:04 pm
the republican party, a prominent ronald trump supporter who plastered his bandwidth from supporting slogans. the president refused to ta ke slogans. the president refused to take responsibility for the extreme actions of one individual. he said the media had to take it share the responsibility for the tone of debate across the country. it is too early to say who was involved and what their motivation may have been, but already, there are questions right the states about the way politics is done here, about the way that political debate is actually conducted and also there was questions about gun control in me know that already today, the police in new york and other cities as well have stationed extra officers at synagogues and —— as a precaution. . yes reacted on twitter he said...
5:05 pm
that tweet of course before the shooter was contained. a member of the synagogue says that the congregation has had training for active shooter situations. it was a major concern for me, for us, we we re major concern for me, for us, we were working with the department of homeland security to evaluate, exit routes, i spoke to our maintenance person because the doors were easily open from the inside to allow him to get out of the building. but it was a major focus working with him and the jewish federation, a major focus working with him and thejewish federation, he is a security expert, what to do in an active shooter situation, active
5:06 pm
shooter training, we are working with the other synagogues if something horrific like this would happen. who else have you talked to who was inside the building at the shooting? the main person, one person that it did speak to that and knew really well was the maintenance person. one of our maintenance people there, he's been there for 25 yea rs. people there, he's been there for 25 years. he's usually a very cool and collected person, he saw someone get shot down and he knew he was in the bathroom and he was able to get out of the building. again, because these exit doors were working well andi these exit doors were working well and ijust these exit doors were working well and i just can't tell you these exit doors were working well and ijust can't tell you how thankful i am just a half day and, to do that one piece, one task that homeland security told us to do. because in the past, you cannot push through the exit doors. there were easily opened, the safety was on them, so they could not open either
5:07 pm
way, but he was able to get out. you could be a life because of this. with me now in the studio is our correspondent, andy, what details are you gathering of this terrible and tragic few hours of his community in pittsburgh? what i can tell you is that there's been a bit more about the man who was arrested, the suspect in custody. 46 years old and he is said to be a heavy—set white male with a beard. he was confined to the third floor of the synagogue, he was allegedly shouting racist remarks and we understand he may have been injured in the operation to arrest him. we don't know how seriously. we know that three police officers have been wounded in this operation, again, we do not know the extent of their injuries and we know of multiple casualties. some agencies are talking about four fatalities, some
5:08 pm
talking about four fatalities, some talk about the possibility of as many of the eight fatalities that has not been confirmed. tragically, us security and police are very used to this bonding effectively and swiftly to such incidents. that is right. we have a tweet from the governor that is reacting very rapidly. he has about 20 minutes ago saying that he is on his way to pittsburgh and he is heading to the scene of the shooting. you repeat that information that the suspect is in custody, he goes on to say that we're providing local first responders with whatever help they need. we had that tweet from president donald trump, we had a similar message from vice president mike pence, he tweeted about half an hour ago that he said he was monitoring reports of shooting at tree of life synagogue and pittsburgh and praying for the
5:09 pm
fallen and says that the injured and all the families impacted and the courageous first responders are echoing what trump said god bless them all. the police responded very swiftly indeed, but in the interim, it must‘ve been terrifying for the community. that is right. we first saw on social media, reports about armed office is heading for the synagogue. first on the scene would have been the armed offices, routinely armed in the states, but we see in some of these recent pictures here the heavily armed swat teams and military style camouflage that they were on the scene also very rapidly. and of course, as i mentioned, this plays into a very heated political atmosphere in the united states of the moment. that is right, this comes after a man was
5:10 pm
arrested in florida for sending explosive devices to several high—profile democrats, america has been following those events over the past few days from that first device that was sent to the philanthropist and similar devices sent to barack obama and to the clintons. over a dozen devices, cnn was broadcasting live before they had to evacuate their studio because he devices found there. so america had just, wherein the process of digesting that news with lots of complaints about that, it very divisive atmosphere in the public arena, even president trump was calling for a new era where people would listen to each other. but that has just been completed, he has been charged and
5:11 pm
then comes this incident. described here now from jeff, he is a member of the localjewish community. yes been speaking to the media about the combination. we have done lots of training about things like active shooters and we have looked at the facilities as much as possible. described to me how many people would have been inside the synagogue ona would have been inside the synagogue on a saturday and what they would have been doing. i cannot tell you exactly where in there, it depends if there was some type of bar mitzvah or special event which would bring more people, on tree of life, a typical saturday would have had 50 or 60 people, i guess. what did he pass along to you? he said that we would do everything we can, the city will do everything it can to help
5:12 pm
out and from this morning, he is on display here as well. really appreciates all of the help our local politicians. just giving a little bit of description of the congregation and that's synagogue. we understand that it is saturday, there were prayers on saturday morning, ten o'clock the morning and this incident unfolded and started at 945. with us at the moment is andy, and we do not have a fixed or, we do not know the number of casualties right now, we're getting different numbers in right now, so we don't want to say too much, suffice to say there have been casualties that much is clear. the very nature of the place of worship is that the doors should be open, to welcome and members of the community would like to worship together. this incidentjust would like to worship together. this incident just that that might not would like to worship together. this incidentjust that that might not be easyin incidentjust that that might not be easy in america right now. we had
5:13 pm
indication earlier at the synagogue, that we have a procedure in place to deal with an active shooter, what that involved they do not know but it shows that this was a scenario that at least they were thinking... trained, ido that at least they were thinking... trained, i do not know trade in what respect, but we are hearing reports that three police officers who were shot were actually wounded as they arrived at the scene. the synagogue itself describes itself as a very traditional synagogue in what appears to be a leafy suburb, but certainly, reports that the government was on the third floor, showing how big it is, indications there that at this time of the morning, there may have been an event with 50 or 5060 people certainly on their website —— 50 or 60 people. regularworshipers, quite

a large synagogue in that part of the city. we will be hearing that some of the congregation will be, we will come to that in a moment. as we have been hearing, residents in the area. this is what cody had to tell them. i heard yelling and i came downstairs and there was a shooting at the synagogue, it was probably about 10:15am, because my mum was dropping off my brother and she saw someone running dropping off my brother and she saw someone running down the street really fa st someone running down the street really fast and the guy was like, there was a shooting at the synagogue. so we called 911 and my mum toward me and i like, because that's where i went to daycare. and so, this guy can't get to as cars so he's been staying at our house and my mum is a reporter so she went and reported on it right now and, i have
5:15 pm
a lot of friends that live really close so it is to spend a whole day of getting in contact with people and just trying to figure out which of my friends go to that synagogue and who lives nearby will stop do you know of for a fact if any of your friends were you know of for a fact if any of yourfriends were in you know of for a fact if any of your friends were in the synagogue? eye and a friend to goes to that synagogue and i cannot get in touch with the time i do not want to say her name because, you know, so it is just trying to get in touch with friends and family who are there. i we nt friends and family who are there. i went to the daycare when i was really little. on the third floor where we heard he held himself up. and we're just trying to figure out what's going on, you can hear the shots from our house. can you describe the inside of this
5:16 pm
synagogue was like? week pass by there every week, but yeah but we just been calling people, yeah. we could hear the shots and we were just in our living room and we just heard rapid fire. it's scary. a young lady describing what she heard outside the synagogue in pittsburgh where there has been a shooting in a residential area of pittsburgh. we know that the shooter has been contained and also arrested. as we have been hearing, the shooting happened at the tree of life synagogue this afternoon this morning, the gunman is said to have surrendered and is now, as i say, and custody. heavily armed police converging on the hill at reports

that a man opened fire on the synagogue. a peaceful suburban neighbourhood transformed in moments bya neighbourhood transformed in moments by a gunman. tactical weapon units across the city, other officers sealed the area in began moving towards the building and its congregation as the attack continued. it is a suburb with a largejewish population continued. it is a suburb with a large jewish population and continued. it is a suburb with a largejewish population and it seems that the synagogue was deliberately targeted, residents still unsure of what was happening, were ushered to safety. right now we have multiple casualties we're working on the situation, it is imperative that those surrounding the tree of life synagogue, stay in their houses and stay in their places. do not come out of your home right now, it is not safe. we will give you an update as soon as we not safe. we will give you an update as soon as we get not safe. we will give you an update as soon as we get one. not safe. we will give you an update as soon as we get one. they saw large number of people sheltering in the basement and they were led to safety. my heart goes out to all of these families, they should not be happening period. it should not be

happening period. it should not be happening ina happening period. it should not be happening in a synagogue, it should not be happening in our neighbourhood. as the area was made safe, they‘ re neighbourhood. as the area was made safe, they're able to recover the injured and the dead. the gunman is reported to have given himself up after exchanging with police. his motive is yet unclear. let us go to our correspondent dan johnson was motive is yet unclear. let us go to our correspondent danjohnson was in washington. what picture is emerging here was yellow well, this is still in operation that is under way. the police still trying to make that building safe and to account for everyone. that is why we have had no confirmation yet or how many people we re confirmation yet or how many people were involved, how many would have been injured how many would have been injured how many would have been killed. we know that this is a fatal shooting that people have died. still, no confirmation of numbers. and this was an attack that happened on a saturday morning when the synagogue was busy hosting services, so there are perhaps
5:19 pm
many as police try to track down the suspect and then bring him into custody. they have not done that, they have seen confirmation that they have seen confirmation that they have seen confirmation that they have made the area safe. the warning that went out to people who lived around the synagogue for a time, they needed to stay at home, they needed to keep themselves off they needed to keep themselves off the streets to keep themselves safe. it looks like they have not decided that the area is safe, having brought the suspect in custody, but they're still trying to account for eve ryo ne they're still trying to account for everyone and then there are the questions of exactly what was behind this attack. why was the synagogue targeted during the service in a largejewish area of a residential suburb on the edge of pittsburgh? what was the religious aspect, was a
5:20 pm
political motivation here and what questions does it raise about gun control in the states and security? we know in some other cities like new york, security is being stepped up new york, security is being stepped up at synagogues? this attack comes with the backdrop of rising numbers of anti—semitic attacks in the us. yes, the number of anti—semitic incidents where apparently up more than 50%, the highest number on record since 1994. some people will put that down to the tone of political debate and divisive nature of american politics, the way that debate has grown more bitter, more angry and has resulted in more violence being displayed. some people have already raised that prospect this week after they saw letter bombs mailed to prominent
5:21 pm
politicians and political backers, particularly opponents of president trump and the republicans. in when that suspect was arrested in sending those bombs, there are political slogans all of risk than, —— dan. the president refused to take any responsibility for the ache extreme —— extreme actions and said that the media had to take its share of the responsibility for the tone of debate across this country. whether this is attack fits the profile, we'll have to see, but there is already a big debate in lots of questions about the way politics is done here and of course, those questions about gun control will also not be raised although there are questions being raised time and time again after attack after attack and very little seems to change on my front. dan johnson joining us there from washington. he was
5:22 pm
mentioning the political atmosphere now in the run—up to the arrest of the suspect in the pipe bombing, there was a press conference and the security forces from the attorney general, the head of the fbi, all displayed a great deal of unity and what was impressive about it was the fa ct what was impressive about it was the fact that it was very obvious that security operations in the institutions of the united states are working very swiftly together and it wasn't a very significant operation. —— we are seeing a very significant operation. —— we are seeing a very very significant operation. —— we are seeing a very significant operation. italy a few days to arrest that man suspected of sending the explosive devices, the first device was sent on monday to the billionaire philanthropist george soros. the next were sent you the

homes of barack obama and the clintons, and dozens of devices were found at cnn, had to evacuate the studio at one stage. contributes to a very tense atmosphere, doesn't it that even in a synagogue, even in a prayer, you may not be safe. that's right, unfortunately we heard later on that even a synagogue has a procedure, a plan in place for dealing with a mass shooting event like this and what exactly that involves, we do not know. but it is something that they felt they must prepare for and unfortunately it has happened today. so we are hearing from dan johnson and happened today. so we are hearing from danjohnson and increase the number of anti—semitic attacks, so synagogues like this even on a saturday, even on a family event, have to be prepared for an event like this. very difficult indeed, we do not know the number of

casualties, we do know that the shooter has been contained for an hour and 20 minutes, an shooter has been contained for an hourand 20 minutes, an hourand shooter has been contained for an hour and 20 minutes, an hour and a half and then surrendered. certainly, there are reports that the man surrendered there are other reports that he was injured during that operation. when he heard that he shot a three police officers, reportedly as they arrived at the scene, there are reports that he was held up on the third floor of the building, that he was shouting racist taunts. we understand that, according to reports, he is a 46—year—old man, heavy—set white male, light blue shirt and there are already reports that the man has been identified and named, they have not been confirmed yet. but a name at —— appears very rapidly in the public domain. we'll hear a lot about this man in the next hours. that is often because we see very
