9:01 pm
were among those killed. the oldest victim was 97. us federal prosecutors have filed multiple criminal charges against the suspect, robert bowers, who could face the death penalty. he'll appear in court on monday. vigils have been taking place in pittsburgh to remember the victims of what is thought to be the worst anti—semitic attack in recent us history. officials don't think the suspect had any accomplices. he was armed with an assault rifle and three handguns. nick bryant has the latest devlopments. this is the kind of vigil that's become a recurring ritual of life in the united states. a multi—faith act of ecumenicalism, a multi—generational act of community. but this country is facing a crisis of hate—filled violence, and america right now seems incapable of truly coming together. this latest mass shooting was a hate crime. jewish worshippers, killed in a hail
9:02 pm
of gunfire and an onslaught of anti—semitic slurs. the police have released recordings of their shootout with the gunman. i still want to praise the officers for what they did. i mean, they ran into danger, they ran into gunfire to help others. some of that's training, some of that's experience. but it's their inner core that wants them to help others, that wants to save lives. and they did that yesterday. 46—year—old robert bowers entered the synagogue with an ar—15 assault rifle and at least three handguns. he spoke of genocide and his desire to killjewish people. his oldest victim was 97 years old.
9:03 pm
robert bowers‘ social media posts were full of anti—semitic rants, and just hours before the shootings he had been critical of a jewish refugee organisation. "i can't sit by and watch my people get slaughtered", he wrote. "screw the optics, i'm going in." this area of pittsburgh is one of the most close—knitjewish communities in america. one of those places which speaks of the immigrant story. one of those places, according to rabbi chuck diamond, that's long felt vulnerable. i used to be the rabbi there. one of my biggest fears was always, in the back of my head, something like this happening. so, there's a lot of hate, and when you mix hate with guns, it's not a good result. with congressional elections looming, donald trump has been switching awkwardly from campaign mode to condemnation. political rallies the forum for his remarks. this evil, anti—semitic attack is an assault on all of us.
9:04 pm
it's an assault on humanity. mass shootings have become a permanent feature of life here. this weekend, it's pittsburgh that's in mourning. sometime soon, it will be another american community, in another american city. nick bryant, bbc news, pittsburgh. gary o'donoghue is in pittsburgh. just picking up on that report, there will be another city, another massacre and probably a very different reason for that person to carry out that attack. this has been called a hate crime, but it is not just that, is it. it is america's gun problem. yes it is. there are definitely two aspects to this. a lot of people will argue that while hatred is a very difficult thing to
9:05 pm
root out, a very difficult thing to eliminate, a difficult thing and ta kes eliminate, a difficult thing and takes time to expunge in that way, you can ameliorate the situation by stopping people who would like to exercise their hatred in a violent way from causing this kind of damage. and that argument will be made and it will be made loudly. but the problem here, of course, is that once you get into the debate about guns you enter the standard american world of polarisation and you get one side and another side, and there is no common ground. underground, quite honestly, is getting further and further. these two sides are getting further apart in america. they are divided by all sorts of other culture wars that are represented by guns, be it time versus country, north versus south, the coasts versus the middle. all
9:06 pm
these things come together, and guns is one of the symbols of those culture wars. and once you get that kind of position then you get no agreement. congressman and people in the legislature is simply cannot afford to take a chance and do something like this because they know they are likely to get punished at the ballot box. it is very difficult to see what they can do in this way. there is talk of legislation, there always is around the edges, this or that piece of kit for this or that add—on for a weapon being removed. it is not really the central point. the fact is that you can readily by high—powered weapons in this country, the supreme court has affirmed the private right to bear arms, to carry guns, and has affirmed the private right to beararms, to carry guns, and many, many americans believe that as part of their birthright. gary, in pittsburgh, many thanks. we will
