if he is on that mainstream stage, he has got to adjust his act, he should have been faster to apologise. it was very mealy mouthed, i am sorry, i'm not sorry, lam better... the whole thing is a mess. that includes the oscars themselves, with the ceremony now fewer than three months away, they now search for a new host, someone they are sure won't end up being surrounded by controversy in the same way that kevin hart has. is hello, and welcome to the film review on bbc news. to take us through this week's cinema releases is mark kermode. 50, mark — what do we have this week? very good week. we've the old man and the gun, which may and may not be robert redford's performance on—screen. be robert redford's performance

on-screen. we've sorry to bother you, a sushi, sundance hit. and white boy rick, it is true story with a great ensemble cast. the old man and the gun, robert redford, here is what age? i met him number of years ago. i was really impressed. the best thing about him is that you looks his age. he has weathered fantastically well. no botox 7 weathered fantastically well. no botox? not as far as i can tell. this is based on a true story of an american caviar criminal and perennialjailbreak. he american caviar criminal and perennial jailbreak. he is american caviar criminal and perennialjailbreak. he is the old man of the title who robs small banks. the way the dude is a very low— key, banks. the way the dude is a very

low—key, very understanding. so polite, is almost as if people don't notice that it's happening. certainly, you bought the start joining the dots for a long time. hello. oh, don't cry. what are you crying for? this is my first day. well, there's always a first time for everything, isn't there? chin up. you're doing a greatjob. this alone is shot in a super 16

together that a he has two accomplices, one played by danny glover and one by tom waits. and he'd be an start up a relationship with sissy spacek ‘s character. he asks her, what do you do? he says if ito do, you wouldn't want to be situated with me. he tells her that she's a bank robber but she sort of jerking so she isn't sure. meanwhile casey affleck‘s detective is over the hill. he sucks to be on their tail. what i love about this film, robert redford and sissy spacek are com pletely robert redford and sissy spacek are completely fantastic. you completely believe in them. they way they talk and spent time together is

beautifully done. it's an insult like us, great work from the likes of tom waits and danny glover. it chimes very much worth robert redford's career. if you look back to british custody and sundance kid, we've seen him doing collins and robberies. i thought it was lovely, really charming with a bit of an edge to it. his character does this stuff, apparently, because he is in love with it. summary said, why is he smiling all the time? because he she seems to enjoy what he is doing. it is very gentle but it has real substance. you really believe in those characters. i smiled the way through. a fitting tribute to a great film career? he has said never say never and i'm sure he'll will have a million authors. it is a

great not to end on because it is such a great film. sorry to bother you do? from director bruce o'reilly. a serial satire set in an alternative presence. there is a young man struggling for rent. he ta kes a young man struggling for rent. he takes a job with telemarketing and he is told by danny glover who is his workmate, your problem is you need to use your white voice. he says the white boys sounds relaxed and casual stop it the voice your callers think they want to hear. he does this and start climbing up the ladder which puts him at odds with his friends. the whole film is a satire about capitals and modern slavery. it's a story about selling out, what human beings and what eve ryo ne out, what human beings and what everyone around you loses. it's very funny but it shifts during the course of the movie. from a sire

into something much more surreal, much more weird. itjets into the territory of horror, science fiction. there's a felon which i don't expect you to have seen, but if anyone has seen society, and do not do it, this is very much the same way. some people say they don't like the shift in tone. right from the beginning, it's very funny, very acerbic. i thought it was really good. white boy rick is the story of a teenager who became an informant for the fbi. apparently, the fbi's youngest informant. the story is a brilliant imitation of that period. matthew mcconaughey is his father.

here's a clip. dad! ah, christ. keep going, i got it under control. you don't need to stop the car. everything's fine. don't get out of the car. everything is not fine! a manjust ran out of your house, almost dents my imperial — you don't have a thing under control! i hate you! i got this under control, all right? it ain't under control. stay out of it. looks like richard's having a bad day. no, ma, i'm not having a bad day. my son and i walked into the lion's den this morning and walked out with the golden fleece. ain't that right, ricky? that's right. that's right! you're pathetic! both of you! put some clothes on, will you? we're going for custard! love matthew mcconaughey, such a good actor. the whole ensemble is a great. it blew and revocation of

19805 great. it blew and revocation of 1980s detroit. the story is one of crime and guns and of dogs. what it is permanently interested in is the family. from the beginning, we're introduced to the young kids going to egonjove with his father. she has very much land units from his father. his dad has passed on these things but he thinks our licence. what i liked about it, the film has a strange new and feel to it. it is based on a true story. you find yourself being more involved in the interrelations between the characters than in the actual gun sales and drug sales. jenniferjason leigh is terrific as the fbi agent who sees this kid on the street and things we can use them. it takes a family that he film can be very tough on and actually makes the

characters are very sympathetic. do you do the world from their point of view. i thought it was very good. it's not for everybody, it will struggle to find an audience. best out at the moment? still shoplifters. a prizewinner at khan, a story about people living on the margins in tokyo. it begins with what you think is a father and a son teaching this on shoplifting. someone says, why do you teach him shoplifting? he says, it's what i know. it very human and its spending time with characters you believe in. for the record, i enjoyed disobedience, which you recommend it. it's great. overall, very good.

again, a very difficult subject. i thought rachel mcadams was very convincing. i thought it was terrific as well. well what a watch. best dvd? mission impossible, for lots. who knew the mission impossible series was going to get better and better. how many have been? six, seven? we think with this, it's not ironic. it's a proper mud and builds it of your seat action thriller. it's got fa ntastically action thriller. it's got fantastically instituted set pieces. what i really like about it is that it's a very modern but feels very physical. it feels very physical for all it's more than carpenter. it moves at the speed of a bullet and asa moves at the speed of a bullet and as a very good film. tom cruse is great in that role. he's not for eve ryo ne great in that role. he's not for everyone but he's really good in
5:56 pm
that role. he has seen this franchise from strength to strength. he has had himself badly doing all the response. in fact, this than in which he hurt himself is in the film. when you see it in the film, you feel the pain! thank you very much good to have you with us again. a quick reminder before we go that you'll find more film news and reviews from across the bbc online at bbc.co.uk/markkermode. and you can find all our previous programmes on the bbc iplayer. that's it for this week though. thanks for watching. goodbye. hello there. some of is so wet and weather today. it also finished with some beautiful sunsets. as we move
