i'm jeanette kwa kye. welcome to sportsday. we've had the season's highest scoring premier league match this afternoon. tottenham are nowjust two points behind second place manchester city after a comprehensive 6—2 win over everton at goodison park. craig templeton reports. a festive welcome for tottenham at goodison park, but with manchester city and chelsea both losing yesterday, there was an opportunity. but it was everton who struck the first blow, and it came from a man who spent 12 years in an arsenal shirt. theo walcott, i—0. it's the season of giving, butjordan pickford and kurt zouma went early with their present. the goalkeeper did better with this son effort, but dele alli appeared out of nowhere to put tottenham in front. and when trippier delivered his free

kick to the post, harry kane found himself in space and found the net. if everton thought it would be a calmer second half, christian eriksen‘s right foot putting into that. gylfi sigurdsson‘s right foot used to tread tottenham turf. now he's in everton blue. 4-2. totte n ha m tottenham were not quite finished yet, though. son and kane put the result beyond all doubt. eight goals, three points for totte n ha m. an absolute christmas cracker. craig templeton, bbc news. really please. i think the performance was fantastic. the got to talk too much but, very proud of my players. they deserve all the credit. i think it was to show not only quality. energy was fantastic. leeds united are back on top of the championship for christmas after beating aston villa

3—2 at villa park. villa were 2—0 up inside 20 minutes through tammy abraham and a long distance effort from conor hourihane. a win would have taken them to 2 points off the play—off spots. but with just over half an hour to play, leeds hit back throuthack clarke then pontus jannsen. it was heading for a draw before poor defending teed up kemar roofe. a 95th minute winner to send leeds top, i point ahead of norwich. rangers are now within a point of league leaders celtic in the scottish premiership. it was their fourth straight win at mcdiarmid park. joe lynskey reports. it's more congested than we're used to in the scottish premiership. right now, rangers have celtic in sight at the top. but to keep up the challenge, they would need perfection in perth again. this side hasn't lost at stjohnstone in eight years, but that was under threat when matty kennedy put the home side in front. steven gerrard, though, is learning patience with this side. it helps with a striker
7:36 pm
who steps up when it matters. this equaliser was alfredo morelos‘ 18th goal of the season, but he knew i—i wasn't enough. and with missed chances, rangers‘ time is running out. kyle lafferty was stopped by a lunge and a save. but with two minutes left, back came their colombian. this may become morelos‘ most important moment, a goal that takes rangers within a point of the top. there is more work still to do, but comebacks like this can revive a title bid. joe lynskey, bbc news. bath have moved into the top six in rugby union's premiership with a 24—14 win at wasps. 19 of bath's points, including the opening try, came from the fly half freddie burns, but wasps have now won just one of their last 12 games. 0ur rugby union correspondent chrisjones was watching at coventry‘s ricoh arena alongside england women's

scrum half, natasha hunt. both teams are really struggling for form coming into this fixture, and it's bath who have come to the ricoh arena and get a hugely significant win on the road, being cheered on by their supporters and doing a lap of honour behind us. natasha hunt, who was summarising for us on radio 5 live. how impressed were you with bath's commitment? they didn't play a huge amount of by, they didn't play a huge amount of rugby, but they really dogged out the win. massively. we spoke pretty much about the fact they were going to play the territory. they weren't looking to go and attack. they were looking to be really smart with the ball, play territory, and they did that so well. forward effort was unbelievable. defensively, they were fantastic. and fair play to come here and get a ten—point win and dog it out. brilliant. and freddie burns has had his ups and downs this season, hasn't he? especially that european game against toulouse. but 19 points today. a brilliant individual try. and he was the man of the match and really orchestrated for bath, this crucial win.
7:38 pm
yes, he did. it's so easy when your forwards are going, when you got momentum, on the front foot. he played so well today. he managed it impeccably and they're good for the win, aren't they? i9 19 points, fairplay. 24—14, it has finished. a big win for bath. but for wasps, their tricky run of form. so confirmation there of that wasps—bath score. there was one other match today. bottom side newcastle were leading against third place gloucester, but were eventually beaten 20—17 at kingston park. boxing promoter eddie hearn says that there is a very, very good chance that dillian whyte will face anthonyjoshua for his world heavyweight titles in april. whyte is expected to be confirmed as the mandatory wbo challenger after knocking out dereck chisora in london last night. there was also big boxing action in manchester last night, as josh warrington successfully defended his ibf

featherweight title against carl frampton. james burford reports. boxing day may still be a few days away, but we've already had one cracker of boxing night. these all—british nights under the lights don't come around too often. for fans of the sport, it's christmas come early. they say it's better to give than to receive. josh warrington certainly agrees. but his punches are the sort of present no one wants. it was billed as a featherweight classic but with the power on show, these two are giants of the sport. frampton‘s fightback deserves credit, but his was a debt too large. warrington dominant throughout, his 28th win in succession. you always have doubts. am i really at this level? when i get into the building, changing rooms, i will not get beat. something comes over me. i will do anything to win. absolutely anything to win. and ijust get this bundle of energy from somewhere. i train hard in the gym, like a man possessed. and so to london's 02 arena, where the rematch between dillian whyte and dereck chisora served up all the brutality of their first bout.
7:40 pm
this is perhaps as heavy—handed as boxing gets. breathtaking, quite literally, the best way to describe it. this fight had an air of pressure throughout. chisora unrelenting, but his was a bubble about to burst. dillian whyte may be nicknamed "the bodysnatcher", but this was no stolen victory. it was one of planning, patience and sheer power. and with anthonyjoshua watching ringside, whyte still harbours hopes of facing his old foe again. we know how the list goes — number one, number two. if they're not available, let's see if we can get on. if anyone deserves a title shot, it's dillian. unhappy with the response, whyte walked away from the ring, but this was an night to be remembered in british boxing. these clashes might be happening more in 2019, simply because there are so many potentially great fights out there involving british fighters, whether it's two british fighters in the same ring or british fighters taking opportunities against those from overseas. but whether abroad or closer to home, there's more and more

interest over the bouts and the belts. james burford, bbc news. england's james wade recovered from 3—1 down to beat compatriot keegan brown 4—3 and reach the last 16 of the pdc world darts championship. ninth seed wade was booed by the crowd at alexandra palace following his behaviour in the previous round. he had celebrated in his opponent's face and later apologised, saying he had a "hypomania episode". wade will play unseeded ryanjoyce in the next round. that's all from sportsday. we'll have more sport throughout the evening. now on bbc news, one of the sporting interviews of the year. last month, wayne rooney talked to natalie pirks about his move across the atlantic to take the field with dc united. the success of the club has
7:42 pm
been long established. you know, they had some great years between ‘96 and 200a. they lacked, in recent years, the star quality. there was really no player that stood out, that really appealed to the masses. wayne's name came up and, instantly, you get excited. you know, everyone knows who wayne is, and the resume, and what he's about. when the name wayne rooney was linked to dc united, people knew that was a big deal. we had a sense early
7:43 pm
on that he really loved the city, had a great comfort level with it. we took him to audi field. we showed him different areas that he could find home for his family. obviously, that's a big part of the equation. "what are we going to do with the kids, schools, homes?" so he got really comfortable early on, and really, i think after about two days' time, he said, "i'm all in, i want to do this." i could see the team had talent, and they were in a false position, really. i believed, with my experience, i could come in and try and help the team. we — we being mls — maybe in the early days were guilty of players in europe or south america coming over here in their 30s for vacation. and as the league has gone, that doesn't fly anymore. the league is too good. he put that to rest very early, when he came over for his first game with us, and even with his players
7:44 pm
in his first training session. guys like that, you don't know how they're going to come into the locker room and work with the team. wayne was one of the guys that was humble. came in, talked to everyone from the first day on and gelled with us. he's been very cohesive with the group. it's been great working on and off the field with them. since day one, he's been there for us. his first day on the training ground, he arrived injuly in almost 100 degree temperatures. crazy summer hot day in dc. we have some academy members out there, and he's talking to players, and you could see his connection with his team—mates. and at the end of the session, he carries the equipment. he grabs the equipment and walks it into the equipment room. we don't have a lot of first—team pros that do that. just shows that he's prepared to roll up his sleeves and get to work. i think it's been a perfect fit. you don't know what you're going to get in a forward defensively, i guess.
7:45 pm
he's here to win and to perform, and he'll do whatever it takes to win a game. that resonated with our team. he does what he does. he trains hard, he makes the right play, he's super talented as a player. and with a large amount of experience. it wasn't... it was pretty seamless. he just fit in. instantly, he became one of the guys. he didn't ask for special treatment.
