hello, this is breakfast with naga munchetty and roger johnson. good morning. here's a summary of today's main stories from bbc news. more than 1,000 people have been recognised in the new year honours list, including some of the emergency workers who responded to the terror attacks in manchester and london in 2017. also honoured were the british divers who helped rescue a team of young footballers from a cave in thailand. leading figures from the worlds of showbusiness, sport and fashion are on the list, including a damehood for twiggy, and broadcaster michael palin becomes a "sir." i'm very surprised, because i've done a lot of things in my life, none of which i thought were worthy of such recognition. but maybe the cumulative effect is one of some kind of achievement.” cumulative effect is one of some kind of achievement. i didn't expect it, it was completely out of the blue. a shock. but the nicest shock in the world. who wouldn't want to be dame twiggy? the immigration minister, caroline nokes, is to visit dover today, amid mounting criticism of the government's response to the rising number of migrants crossing the channel in small boats.

a number of mps have called for more patrol boats to be deployed, but the government fears they could be seen as rescue boats and encourage more people to cross. more than 200 migrants have arrived since the start of november, leading the home secretary to declare a major incident. it's been confirmed that administrators have been brought in to run the music retailer hmv, which has collapsed after suffering poor sales. the store's owners say high business rates and changes in consumer behaviour are to blame. the retailer employs more than 2000 staff across the uk. administrators from kpmg say they'll try to keep all 125 stores open while they're looking for a buyer. the government's spending more than £100 million to charter extra ferries to ensure the delivery of essential supplies in the event of a no deal brexit. the plans would allow for almost 4000 lorries a week to take goods to ports like dover, plymouth, poole, and portsmouth. the department for transport says the arrangements are an important part of its preparations,

but insists the government still wants to strike a deal with brussels. virgin trains is deploying staff wearing pink hi—viz vests who are trained in conflict resolution to deal with football fans using its services. the scheme has been trialled since the start of the season, and is now being rolled out on a more permanent basis. the company says it chose pink because it's known to have a calming effect on crowds. that may seem an amusing story, but the passengers travelling on trains... and you travel on trains a lot. a lot. the footballers get very happy, but it can be a bit intimidating. so a good idea. yes, well, if they have trialled attended works. shall we look at the weather? yes, helen has all of that. looking mostly drive to what is left of 2018. mild as well, with some

in crossing the premier league line. they did it in record style. this season, the previous season, all my career in barcelona and munich, i didn't expect, so now i'm happy because we did it. they did it in the league cup, too, the fa cup was chelsea's to hold as united paid the penalty. 1—0 to chelsea. a final flourish for antonio conte. chelsea's success wasn't finished yet, with the ladies unbeatable in the wsl and the fa cup. a goal fitting enough to win any fa cup final. celtic went one better with a domestic treble in scotland. the league and scottish cup added to the previous year's league cup. in europe, well, liverpool's dramatic run came to a head in the final — specifically, loris karius's. a concussion led to two errors, gifting real madrid a third straight title. in rugby union, saracens returned to the top of the pack, beating exeter 27—10 in the final. ireland's fine rugby year was exemplified by leinster, pro14 and european champions. 17 of that squad then travelled down under to help ireland win a test series in australia for the first time since 1979.

this was the first big test for everyone, to win that stage and put quite a bit of time into all my rivals was massive, really. 19th ofjuly, stage 12 was the finisher. alpe d'huez, one of the most iconic climbs in the tour. yeah, wearing the yellowjersey on that stage was amazing anyway. the first guy in yellow to win on alpe d'huez. you know, two mountain stages back—to—back was an amazing feeling. morale and confidence after that was just sky—high. 28th ofjuly, stage 20 was the final time trial. that was the first time ijust let myself go and believe it. my wife was there at the finish, which i didn't know. that's when all the emotion hit me as well, i ended up crying on international tv. the 29th ofjuly, stage 21. finally, i had officially won the tour. it was great to go on the podium. the amount of welsh and british flags on the side, all of the support wasjust incredible. it was like response, going up and down there. the 9th of august
