it on the platform and run awaym says what you are seeing the police had not responded so quickly he would have starved more people he been allowed to. fu stabbed. it is quite possible. i am grateful they were there quickly, this is manchester victoria station, with the manchester arena happened last year so they are prepared for that, came in quickly. as an individual and a human being it felt like forever because it was a scream that will stay with me for a long time. seeing the guy with the knife a few feet moving towards me and thinking this could be it. but they were there really quickly and i am very

grateful that they were there. terribly frightening for you. if reports are correct that the british transport officer was stabbed in the shoulder, was a term that was first on the scene? it is possible. i saw the man who was stabbed and i took some videos but it appeared he was stabbed in the head and possibly the back, covered in blood. maybe his partner had a large bandage about her head. they both walked out of the station so it would appear serious harm has not happened so thatis serious harm has not happened so that is something to be grateful for. i had from people speaking that the man had tried to start a police officer. that is not something i saw myself, i cannot independently

verify that would not necessarily be too far from the truth from what i saw and i'm hearing. finally, how would you describe the attacker?” would you describe the attacker?” would say age wise probably in his 30s, the main thing was he was very skittish because when he was backing to wa nts skittish because when he was backing to wants me he was moving left and right and looking and he was very aggressive and skittish and intent on causing harm and more harm than he actually did. newly reissued just

and well and it was important was thanks to speedy reactions of the police to act very bravely. thank you for coming on and deciding what you for coming on and deciding what you saw at victoria station. just to confirm the people stabbed on the tram platform in manchester, two of them in man and woman taken to hospital and a third in british transport officer stabbed in the shoulder, it does seem the man responsible has been arrested and taken away. more details on that when we get it. if parliament backs the deal britain can turna if parliament backs the deal britain can turn a corner. the referendum in 2016 was divisive but we want the best for our country. 2019 conveniently put our differences aside and move forward together. and

a little investment into our most precious public service site is there for us when we need it. you will introduce a new skills —based immigration system to replace the demand movement —— freedom of movement and by enhancing and protecting our environment will make britain a healthier place. this year the uk has achieved a lot. the employment rate is at a record high, it is starting its first sustained fall ina it is starting its first sustained fall in a generation and the number of people in absolute poverty is at a record low. a new year means new potential to do even more, to ensure eve ryo ne potential to do even more, to ensure everyone and every community in fewer the benefit —— can feel the benefit. we can start a new chapter with optimism and hope. we have all we need to thrive and if we come together in 2019 i know we can make a su ccess together in 2019 i know we can make a success of what lies ahead and build a country that surely works for everyone of us. twenty fire engines

and around 120 firefighters are tackling a large blaze at a self—storage warehouse in south london. the london fire brigade said there were no reports of any injuries in the incident in croydon. the cause of the fire is not yet known. as we've been hearing the government is bringing back 2 border force patrol boats from overseas to police the english channel — in the wake of renewed controversy over the number of migrants coming to the uk. the home secretary, sajid javid, has been meeting senior officials from the border force and the national crime agency to discuss the issue today. he explained the reasons behind the government's decision. this is one of the most treacherous stretches of water there is. 21 miles, with people taking grave risk, really taking their lives in their own hands by taking this journey. and i want to ensure we are doing all we can.
10:53 pm
that's one of the reasons i made the decision today to redeploy two of the border force's largest vessels back from abroad to south—east england. they willjoin a cutter already there and two other coastal patrol vessels that there are. this will help with the human side of this situation, but also to better protect our borders. but when it comes to the borders, there is also a lot more we need to do. i wish there was one single answer, but it requires action on many fronts. there are three other things i decided to do today and in the run—up to this. much of this work started weeks ago but we try to step it up further. one is on law enforcement, both at home with the national crime agency and other agencies to work with, but better cooperation with our french partners. we have already opened up, for example, just last month, a new coordination centre in calais, a 24/7 manned centre with british and french officials to end this kind of illegal migration
10:54 pm
from britain to france. we have done more work on disruptions because whilst we know about the successful attempts that people have made it to the uk, there are also many that are not successful because the french have been successful in i think about 40% of cases so far this year, in actually disrupting them and stopping them leaving the french coast. the french and british are working together, we want to get the disruption up, so we're looking at ways to do that directly but also in more covert ways. and then lastly i want to send a very strong signal to the people who do think about making this journey, that we will do all we can to ensure it is not a success in the sense that i don't want people to think that if they leave a safe country like france that they can get to britain and then just get to stay.
10:55 pm
and that's why am working out ways with the french to increase the number of returns that we can make, to also send a strong message that we will do all we can, notjust to protect human life because that's the right and responsible thing to do at all times, but also to protect our borders. you previously said that bringing in these bigger ships is actually a pull factor which could encourage more people to make that perilous trip. how will you prevent that from and what hope is to those migrants you pick up in the channel? will they be returned to france? we are working with the french are more cooperation in terms of returns, but if they are picked up in english waters, just as they are now either
10:56 pm
by border force or volunteers from the rnli or others, they will be brought back into british waters and that is what we would do initially. we would obviously assess any claim they may or may not make for asylum. that's why i think the returns policy is important to crack down on these gangs of people traffickers taking advantage of so many people by selling them are completely false prospectus and we don't want that. we want to crack down. there's been some excellent work done on law enforcement in recent weeks, especially the french recently made three significant arrests and no suspects have been interrogated. i think there is a lot more to come on law enforcement cooperation. that was the home secretary sajid javid speaking to us earlier. we are watching extraordinary scenes in paris, will bring you those pictures shortly. it's time for a look at the weather with darren bett the weather set to change significantly, coming from the north. we're in this cloudy but mild
