is then murder. an investigation is then started after a 31—year—old man was shot dead by police in coventry, officers have gone to unaddressed in the city centre as part of preplanned operation. and amid the government shut down, president trump threatens to declare a national emergency in order to build a border wall without congressional approval. smokers and problem drinkers admitted to hospital in england, will get told to quit or cut down to try to reduce demands on the health service. that's it for me for now, carol walker will be a at 72-— for now, carol walker will be a at 72 —— seven o'clock, until then, export state. —— it's sports day. hello and welcome to sportsday, with me lizzie greenwood—hughes and ben mundy. the headlines this evening. it's a gillingham giant killing, as cardiff are dumped out of the fa cup. holders chelsea are safely through, but it's a tearful goodbye for fabregas.
6:31 pm
it's five out of five for ole gunnar solskjaer, as manchester united glide through their tie. also coming up on the programme: the leicester tigers recovery continues, as they beat third placed gloucester. and, the new netball super league season has begun.. but it's the same old story for champions wasps. welcome then. lots coming—up on a busy weekend of fa cup third round action, this is when the big boysjoin in, when the premier league sides have to try to avoid an upset. not too many shocks so far but we have had one giant killing, lizzie‘s at the screen to talk us through it. yes this could be good or bad news for cardiff fans, depending on whether they'd prefer their club to concentrate on premier league survival,
6:32 pm
either way, they've been knocked out in the 3rd round by league one strugglers gillingham, 45 places below them. it was only 1—0 and it was a late goal, scored by the 21 year old elliott list, looking composed, 9 minutes to go at the priestfield stadium. cardiff had made plenty of changes and did have their chances. they'll now turn their attention to trying to stay in the premier league, but for the gills it's a famous upset, and they're in the 4th round for the first time in 15 years. it's a great performance for the boys and i'm delighted for them, they have been working hard all through the season, we did not get the results that we should but they have given everything today, we knew what we had to get a result and it's great to win the game 1—0. what we had to get a result and it's great to win the game 1-0. who would you like to get on monday? anybody,
6:33 pm
i'm happy to get through to the fourth round and it will be exciting to see what we do get and the boys they think will be expected to see what we get in as a club the bigger club, the better for us what we get in as a club the bigger club, the betterfor us but whoever it is if we put the effort in like we did today, we will enter it again. the holders chelsea haven't been knocked out in the 3rd round for over 20 years, and they're safely through this time. it took them a while to get going against the championship promotion contenders, forest, alavaro morata scoring both their goals within 10 minutes early in the second half. cesc fabregas started what is likely to be his last game for the club, just look at his reaction when he was subsitituted, looks almost in tears as he waved to fans. his chelsea contract is due to expire in the summer. fabregas made his debut in english football 16 years ago and ofcourse spent many eyars at arsenal before moving to chelsea and it's thought he's on his way to monaco managed by his old team mate thierry henry. we are very pleased with the
6:34 pm
results, we are very pleased for the performance, we are very pleased for those players that perhaps were not involved in so many games so far, and they all did very well so they are all good performances and good results. performances and good results. manchester united's resurgence under caretaker, ole gunnar solksjear contiues, they comfortably saw—off the championship side reading 2—0 at home, it's solksjear‘s 5th win a row and a 100% record since he returned to old trafford. adam wild was watching this one for us. in this famous old competition, these two sides of history. manchester united and reading first met in the fa cup more than a century ago. times may have changed, but this is the united side beginning to remind everyone of what they've once had. they went ahead, thanks to a very modern twist. the ball went in, but a video replay here gave them a penalty instead. juan mata keeping his cards.
6:35 pm
despite their stuttering season in the championship, reading did create enough chances to keep this a contest. opportunities though theyjust could not take. united could. their lead was doubled before the break, lamur lukaku squeezing into second. winning one and the extent of five. not bad to the glory days quite yet at old trafford but at manchester united things continue to look brighter. we have got a great history and tradition in this cup and of course one of my best moments on the pitch have been walking out on an fa cup final. so that's one of the things we spoke about in the team so this is a trophy that means a lot to this club and to the supporters so we will give it a go.
6:36 pm
there's was a minor upset at accrington's wham stadium where they beat the 1978 fa cup winners ipswich. accrington are league one and ipswich are in the championship but accrington are doing well this season and billy kee‘s header was enough to seal a 3rd round exit for ipswich who are rock bottom of the championship and listen to this, ipswich haven't won an fa cup match for nearly a decade! accrington though, are making a habit of fa cup 3rd round success. the lads have worked hard, we have been through a bit of a slump really and we thought we got ourselves out of it over christmas but back—to—back wins in the league a defeat is disappointing so we have not been playing that badly to be fair, we defended really well today. a few chances they had we stuck them all to width of the save and a good plot and thankfully we took our chances, we had plenty of chances but we took one and that was the difference. brighton was one of only two all—premier league ties this weekend
6:37 pm
and it went the way of brighton, winning 3—1 at the vitality stadium. bournemouth dominated for the first half an hour until brighton scored two goals in 5 minutes, man of the match, anthony knockaert with the first and then yves bissouma with the second beating artur boruc from 30 yards, in off the post for the mali international. brighton got one back just after half time, but florin andone wrapped up the victory for brighton, who were clinical. we will probably 2—0 up against the round of play, sometimes it happens and what you need to do is make sure to secure that need. we had to defend really well at times. they we re defend really well at times. they were a good side but really pleased for the lads that have not played as many minutes in games as what they would like and it's a good 90 minutes for them. burnley are safely through to round 4, but they needed a stoppage time penalty to beat league one‘s barnsley1—0 at turf moor, although the game is being talked about more because they had a first half pen disallowed through var. just take a look at this.
6:38 pm
burnley were awarded a penalty in the first half for this challenge on matej vydra. the striker then got—up to take the penalty but as he did so the referee cancelled the penalty, because with the help of tv‘s var, there had been off side in the build—up. it turned out it didn't matter as burnley got a second half penalty which stood this time, and chris wood despatched it for the only goal of the game. only 9 games have var this round, it's only at the premier league grounds. and although burnley manager sean dyche wasn't too pleased with how his var incident was handled, he thinks, eventually it'll be a good thing. i'm a big fan of it. the concept of it, we all know, a lot of good example today. the thing i was surprised having seen it back in our system, we decided it was offside within five seconds or so i understand they want to be sure of course. i think from what i saw today
6:39 pm
if it's going to take nearly one and a half minutes i think that i think the referee shall hold the ball, he should stand there. because we have got a penalty but the fact is we did not know what he was being given for. it might be possible everyone calms down and it does not put any pressure on the penalty either. i'm a big fan of him and i think it will be used wisely. difficult for the referees because they not using the the time and people have to get used to it. west ham had a much easier passage to the 11th round, beating birmingham city 2—0 at the london stadium. marco arnautovic headed west ham in front in the first half, but he went—off shortly afterwards with a back problem. and it was another injury prone star who scored west ham's second. andy carroll coming—off the bench to head in his first goal since april last year. and his manager hopes it'll be the start of a resurgence for the former england striker.
6:40 pm
when he's playing something always happens around him. he's coming from a long injury i think you will contribute a lot to our team this season. everton avoided an upset against league two lincoln city. you might remember the imps made it all the way to the quarter finals two seasons ago when they were a non—league side, they're league two now but everton survived an upset. ademola lookman heading—in front before the brazilian international bernard made it 2—0 before half—time. lincoln pulled one back through michael bostwick but they couldn't break down the premier league side for an equaliser. it finished 2—1 to everton. it's an important competition for us asa it's an important competition for us as a club. our friends, the sold out
6:41 pm
oui’ as a club. our friends, the sold out our stadium as a club. our friends, the sold out ourstadium and as a club. our friends, the sold out our stadium and that is important for us and their desire to go and do something special in the competition. we achieve the most important thing of course in this moment, most important for us is to achieve the results and get the confidence. arsenal are still playing in the late kick off, they're at league one‘s blackpool. and leading 2—0 so far. 19—year—old joe willock is the youngest player to score for arsenal in the fa cup since aaron ramsey nine years ago. he's got both goals for unai emery‘s side. controversy even before the game kicked off, a fan delayed the arsenal team, staging a protest on top of their team bus. blackpool's owner, owen oyston is unpopular with fans. there have been lots of protests at the ground. we will have to score
6:42 pm
there as soon as we get it. we will have to score there as soon as we get it. so let's have a quick look at some of the day's other results. league one‘s luton town forced a replay against the championship‘s sheffield wednesday and the same goes for shrewsbury and stoke, there were wins for west brom, and west ham, then in the three o'clock kick offs. there were wins for swansea, bolton, brentford. frank lampard's championship derby side forced a replay with the premier league's southampton, wimbledon won at fleetwood and middlesbrough thrashed peterborough 5—0. and then in the late kick off‘s we've discussed arsenal already. no goals at all in the late kick—off, it's quite a way to go. not too long to go into us. we are hoping for some goals later on. we are hoping for some goals later on. right that pretty much wraps up the day's fa cup action. over to ben now for the rest of the day's sport. about half an hour to go, they still need 2—0. about half an hour to go, they still need 2—0. yep, any further goals in those ties, we'll let you know. to rugby union's premiership now though. and, exeter chiefs are back on top after a 14—0 win over bristol.
6:43 pm
there were also wins today for harlequins and worcester. while, leicester earned a second home win in a row. they beat gloucester 34—16, as craig templeton reports. after gloucester‘s surprise defeat last weekend, there was a chance a brief at struggling leicester. the tigers have lost four of their last five at welford road, but still packed full of internationals. jonny may is one of them. george ford is another, his precision and kept the gloucester challenge at bay. and leicester were growing in confidence, so they stopped looking his genius allowing him to score a second. and another soon to follow, gloucester once more unable to handle the pace of may, with try number nine for the season. this sparked gloucester into life and they look like a team further in the table. giving them a glimmer of hope. that glimmer was extinguished by four as that is the bonus point was secured. so the smack defeat in
6:44 pm
a row for gloucester the tigers are starting to find there were again. in the pro 1a, ospreys beat cardiff blues 20—11, with this cross field kick from sam davies helping george north to a try. leinster are currently beating ulster 26—7. sean cronin scored two tries for the home side within five minutes, they were his 34th and 35th for his team. and scarlets are beating dragons 12—3, thanks to two danjones penalties before half time, withjosh lewis scoring the dragons' only penalty. elsewhere today, benetton beat glasgow warriors 20—17. also coming up on the programme: what happens when you mix the physical sport of swimming with the strategic game of chess? we sent mike bushell to find out. tell you what, physically exhausted,
6:45 pm
i feel like i swam 20 lengths. it's the first day of the new netball super league season and it's a big year for the sport, as it tries to build on the profile provided by england's historic gold medal at the commonwealth games last year. all of the first round matches are being played on the same day, in the same place, the birmingham arena. and emily croydon is there for us. it's a massive year for netball, and this country it culminates in the world cup in liverpool injuly. it started here in front of a packed arena with all ten super league franchises in action. at the start of the day all eyes were on the second match. it was a rerun of last yea rs second match. it was a rerun of last years grand final between wasps and lightning. back in july, years grand final between wasps and lightning. back injuly, the wasps swung that final by four goals. today, the results with the same but the winning margin this time i 30 goals. 72—42. the final score. quite a surprise there although they lost
6:46 pm
three really key players during the off—season. on this evidence it's still wasps who are the team to beat in the super league as they go for a third successive title while the lightning head coach certainly has a lot to think about although she's not using the fact she's lost those three players as an excuse. the focus has always been looking forward and we have a good squad and we have a well—balanced squad, so 110w we have a well—balanced squad, so now it's just about making sure that eve ryo ne now it's just about making sure that everyone is on the same page and we all know ourjobs because today i think we the people were doing the job, some people weren't and it can't turn into a bit of a mess in the second half. you want to play the second half. you want to play the best d—money have the best players in the country, so you are excited to play them, they had a few key losses as well, goalkeeper or goal shooter, so i think the family play them it will be a different game, ithink play them it will be a different game, i think both teams are improving notes. both teams got a lot of improving today. england fans had the chance to see serena godfrey
6:47 pm
backin had the chance to see serena godfrey back in action in the super league after five years of playing her club netball over in new zealand and australia. and she really shows flashes of her supreme talent which is seeing her —— widely recognised as the best centre court player in the world and she held her gusty mature a comparable victory over celtic dragon. it's a good 60 minutes, it's nice to get out there and nervous coming out being the first game of the season and everything. it was nice to work on the combinations. nowhere near perfect where we need to be and we are aware of that but it's nice to get that first win under the belt. some really special moment for you, how did you feel personally out there on the court? not quite where i want to be right now, i think we are building up towards the world cup and that's where i'm trying to before but it's nice to run and get out there after a bit of a preseason block over christmas. it's those matches one—sided, the match between

new franchise london pulse and seven stars certainly was not. it swung both ways before polls binary scored twice in the last minute to win 51-49 twice in the last minute to win 51—49 on their super league debut. there's plenty of action to come. there's plenty of action to come. the final match of the date pits manchester thunder against the newly named saracens mavericks, theyjust this week announced a partnership with the rugby club saracens in another exciting development for the sport. it's a hot ticket this one, plenty of top quality netball on the show. and before manchester thurnder and saracens mavericks gets underway, we can tell you that strathclyde sirens have also recorded their first win of the season with a convincing 56—38 victory over surrey storm, in the fourth match of the day at the birmingham arena. to tennis, and roger federer helped switzerland win the hopman cup. alonside partner belinda bencic, they beat germany's angelique kerber and alex zverev 2—1 to retain the title they won in perth last year. it's the third time that federer has won the hopman cup, and by beating zverev, he got a bit of revenge for defeat in the atp
