evening on bbc news. as jaguar land rover announces majorjob cuts as part of a cost cutting plan, we'll be speaking to the conservative mp caroline spelman who has thousands of the car maker's workers living in her constituency. at half past eight we'll be bringing some of key moments from today's parliamentary debate on the government's brexit deal — which mps will vote on next tuesday. and henry zeffman, political correspondent at the times and the daily mirror's political editor pippa crerar will be here to review the papers, at10:40 and 11:30pm. that's all ahead on bbc news. now on bbc news it's time for sportsday. hello and welcome to sportsday. the battle begins for andy murray — the draw for the first grand slam of the year is made, and we'll take you through all the key match—ups at the australian open. meanwhile, 15 people have
6:32 pm
been arrested in spain as part of an investigation into match—fixing in tennis. 28 professional players are implicated. and what's gone wrong at stoke city? as nathanjones is introduced as their new manager, we'll look at the size of the task ahead of him. and also coming up — getting mclaren back on track — the struggling formula one team hope their new boss can steer them back to the glory days. hello and welcome to sportsday. it's the first grand slam of the year, and it kicks off on monday. the draw for the australian open was made earlier today — with, thanks to the seedings, relatively easy first round matches for the big names like roger federer, novak djokovic and serena williams. but the brits face a much tougher time — both the men and the women.
6:33 pm
joe lynskey is here to take us through what lies ahead. and as far as andy murray is concerned, it's great to see him back, but we shouldn't get too excited. there is much less optimism about this comeback for andy murray this time around. he did make a comeback at the us open at the end of last year, when he reached the second round before he was not out, but he really going to be up against it even make it that far in 2019. he will be up against roberto bautista agut in the first round of the australian open, a man who will bring quite a challenge, the spaniard already has titles under his belt this year. he beat the number one novak djokovic to the qatar open. there remained, murray was comparatively beaten by daniil

medvedev last week in brisbane, who is in medvedev last week in brisbane, who isina medvedev last week in brisbane, who is in a similar range in the rankings, just inside the top 20. the previous victories murray has had against better stager will not play much into this one, after that hip surgery murray has had, he's trying to regain his sharpness. he had a practice match against the rob webber one, novak djokovic, we can see some of that year. murray only managed to win over gao games in the 1.5 sets played —— two games. they had to make way for other practice games are not caught. but after that, we did see some war of the money we are used to off the court. —— some more of the murray. he was contacted —— some more of the murray. he was co nta cted by —— some more of the murray. he was contacted by a fan saying how much of remit was to see him play, murray felt the need to apologise, saying, i'm sorry i couldn't be more entertaining today! thank you for the support. he then went on to offer the fan tickets to see him in one of those first—round games, if
6:35 pm
you can sort it out for monday or tuesday. so whatever the injury problems, he never changes off the court. he is one of the good guys! he might not be in the mix for the title, but those three certainly will be, what about them and what about the women? yeah, they're all getting a little older but they are all still the three to beat at this australian open. novak djokovic is the world number one and he won the last two majors of 2018 at wimbledon and flushing meadows. he'll open against a qualifier, then kei nishikori and alexander zverev look like his biggest obstacles on the way to the final. zverev is one of those younger players who'll finally be looking to step up and put a marker down for a new generation of players to start winning regularly. rafa nadal potentially has a fourth round meeting with britain's number one kyle edmund in his sights — remember, edmund reached the semi—finals of this tournament last year and he's seeded 13th this time round. nadal, though, if he comes
6:36 pm
through that is set to meet roger federer in the semi—finals, that's if the great man, the 20 time grand slam champion, can negotiate his way through this path. that includes another young next generation star stefanos tsitsipas of greece. and federer is looking to win what would be a 100th atp tour title in melbourne. i could live happily ever after with 99! but if you're so close, knowing that i'm going to be playing this season, you know, iwill give that i'm going to be playing this season, you know, i will give it a go. bisley every tournament i will go. bisley every tournament i will go to, people might talk about it, like we are talking about it right now. but defending the title here in australia, sure, iwould now. but defending the title here in australia, sure, i would gladly take it! i will give it all i have. reaching 100 would be something truly very special. roger federer they're looking to make history with his 100 atp for title. three british women all have it tough in the first round.
6:37 pm
johanna konta is down at 37 in the rankings now after a series of poor tournaments. she was once a semi—finalist here three years ago, and she plays a home favourite ajla tomljanovic in the first round — the australian beat konta a few weeks ago. heather watson plays one of the seeds in the first round, and katie boulter here is playing in herfirst grand slam tournament outside of wimbledon. she plays the experienced russian ekaterina makarova in the first round. those britons are going to all need a real upturn in form to challenge the big favourites though — world number one simona halep, serena williams, who was champion here two years ago while she was pregnant, and caroline wozniacki, the defending champion. she's still overcoming rheumatoid arthritis, a condition which can limit herjoints. she's still kept her form up enough to be the third seed next week. so she is overcoming injury, that
6:38 pm
could be a few of this tournament. thanks, i can't wait! it feels like the tennis year is kicking. meanwhile, 28 professional tennis players are suspected of an involvement in match fixing. an investigation by spanish police has implicated 83 people — and 15 have been arrested, thought to be members of an armenian gang. none of the players suspected has been named. our sports correspondent david ornstein is here. what more do we know? it's an serious. it does, and it is not welcome news on the eve of the australian open. investigation began last year amid concerns of irregular activity, as it's been described, a round matches at the lower levels, futures and challenger tournaments. what police say is that a criminal group of armenian individuals bribed professional tennis players to guarantee predetermined results, use
6:39 pm
the identity of thousands of citizens to bet on fixed matches and then members of that armenian groups then members of that armenian groups then attended those matches and ensured the players complied and made sure that other members of their group put all the bets on. a bit completed but the crux of it is that, those 20 players implicated, one of them is said to have competed at last year's us open, so that is of concern. but none of this aspect has been named. lisa also say that a houses were searched in spain —— police also say, thousands of euros cash seized, a shotgun, more than 50 electronic devices, bank cards, luxury vehicles, and documents related to the case as well, 42 accou nts related to the case as well, 42 accounts frozen. the authorities said this scam dates back to at least fabry 2017, with upwards of 97 futures and challenger ‘s match

fixed, and profits running into hundreds of millions of euros. salvatori organised operation. thanks for bringing us up to date on that. —— sounds like an organised operation. stoke city were for 10 years, premier league steadies. fa cup finalists, a europa league team, and for three successive years, finishing in the top ten in the league. even when they were relegated at the end of last season, they were favourites to bounce back up. but they're 14th in the championship with just eight wins in 26 league games. patrick gearey looks at what's gone wrong, and what the new manager nathanjones needs to do: stoke city seemed built to last, a premier league staple with stars and stability. but the potters were dealing with flimsy material than they thought. now they have brought ina new they thought. now they have brought in a new man to remould. their fourth permanent manager in a year. what we have to do is make sure we install a philosophy and mentality here, and an environment and culture, that takes the club forward long time. i would like short—term
6:41 pm
success which would lead into medium—term success which hopefully would lead into long—term success, that the plan. but i don't think there's a timescale on it. i had not been told that time scale. in jones, stoke city energy and identity that the lacking, it shown throughout his luton town team in recent seasons. of course, once they had a clear philosophy of their own. they got into the premier league for the first time and into the cup final in 2011. they were tough and awkward. a wet wednesday in stoke became shorthand for discomfort. under mark hughes, they added duels to the cement. they finished ninth in three seasons in a row. no one expected them to be sucked into the trap door but last year hughes went and paul lambert can pull them out of the cel spellman, relegated. they are currently 14th in the championship after failing to beat shrewsbury town they dismissed gary rowett. they seem to have all the gear but
6:42 pm
not enough ideas. we are a premier league side, with a premier league training facilities, a lot of premier league standard players. but a lot more of them are just not good enough, for whatever reason, maybe its attitude, maybe they are past it, maybe they just its attitude, maybe they are past it, maybe theyjust don't fit in at oui’ it, maybe theyjust don't fit in at our club. something needs to change. hopefully nathanjones our club. something needs to change. hopefully nathan jones can change that. jones said moving to stock will be a gamble, as it will be for them to. another spin of the roulette wheel in the hopes of turning the potters wheel their way. also coming up in the programme... licking their wounds after that 9—0 thrashing? no — according to burton fans, its a pleasurable pain. we have the right to get beaten 9—0 by manchester city, that's... there is 88 clubs who couldn't get our bbc newsline semifinal, they didn't make
6:43 pm
it. -- newsline semifinal, they didn't make it. —— who couldn't get our place in that semifinal. when in 2012, lewis hamilton, announced that he would be leaving his boyhood team mclaren for mercedes, it caused a shock wave in formula one. for hamilton, though, it turned out to be the right decision — it's a move that's won him four of his five world titles. but it's been a different story for the team he left behind. in 2015 mclaren re—signed honda as their engine provider and brought back fernando alonso to partnerjenson button. this meant they had two former world champions in their line up. but this new mclaren—honda parternship never really took off, and in theirfirst season they finished ninth in the constructors‘ championship. last year fernando alonso left mclaren and retired from the formula one after seventeen years. he'll be replaced by carlos sainz, and german andreas seidl is the new boss of their team. seidl is the fourth new management appointment since july, with three top—level figures having left as a consequence of mclaren's poor performance last season. well, our f1 reporter clare
6:44 pm
cottingham knows more about seidl. clare, thanks forjoining us this evening. why do mclaren think he's the right man for thejob? we have to remember that he has a huge background in motorsport, so basically, he was part of the porsche group, he was the manager at porsche. they went on he was there for six years, they want three more titles, the top title as well, in the sports car racing. he went on and when that and he was about to start actually doing the formula e stuff, but portion pulled out of the —— porsche pulled out of the world and your championship and decided to focus on formula e. he was going to look after that. but suddenly at the end of last year, he quit and was looked to this mclaren job, and end of last year, he quit and was looked to this mclarenjob, and of course you have to remember, mclaren, they struggled for the last
6:45 pm
few years, mclaren, they struggled for the last few yea rs, last mclaren, they struggled for the last few years, last year, they finished sixth in the championship, the constructors‘ championship. you have to remember that there are only ten teams that they are up against. so if they finish six and there is 80% of the points came from the two time champion fernando alonso, part of you says, well, they had to do something. and andreas comes with such a big catalogue of motorsport and knowledge. so the ceo of mclaren says, he comes highly rated and i am excited to see what he can do. look forward to that. thanks very much forward to that. thanks very much for that. let‘s take a look now at some of the other stories making the sports headlines this evening. england‘s charley hull will take a two shot lead into the second round of the ladies open in abu dhabi. a great start to the european tour season — but she said she was still unhappy with her new set of irons, as they make the ball spin too much. the world anti—doping agency has finally been given access to the russian testing lab — 10 days after a deadline to let inspectors in had passed.
6:46 pm
the visit was a condition of wada‘s controversial re—instatement of russia in september, following evidence of wide—spread, state sponsored doping. salford red devils have signed prop adam walker, even though he still has 2 months of a ban for cocaine use to serve. he tested positive injuly 2017 and was given a back dated suspension last august. he‘ll be available to play from mid march. last night, burton albion were taken apart by manchester city in the league cup. 9—0 was the final score. the league 1 side were expecting a tough night against the premier league champions — but for many fans, the evening was made even worse by the closure of the m6 near stoke, which meant some didn‘t even make it to the etihad to see their team soundly thrashed. one of those was andrew hartshorn, and i caught up with him earlier. it was agony, quite frankly, there
6:47 pm
we re it was agony, quite frankly, there were football supporters don‘t know the area you‘re going to, you gone out as early as possible... i was watching my sat nav, with what expected time of arrival would be, and wejust expected time of arrival would be, and we just weren‘t moving, i could just slowly have my full by heartbroken as they‘re talking about the match on the radio, and they‘re talking about it, talking about the players coming out to warm up, and you know you‘re not going to be there. and that... that‘s football heartbreak for supporter! use aid was agony, but a pretty painful night for your club, 9—0, completely taken apart by manchester city. would you have preferred to be there to see that? i mean, it wasn‘t pretty. absolutely! we had the right
6:48 pm
to get beaten 9—0 by manchester city in the ad had, and that... there we re in the ad had, and that... there were 88 clubs who could have been in our place and they didn‘t make it. we earned the right to get beaten 9-0 we earned the right to get beaten 9—0 in that match. and u nfortu nately, 9—0 in that match. and unfortunately, that is what happened! but, you know, their team is worth what, £30 million and hours is worth what, £30 million and hours is about 1 million‘s is worth what, £30 million and hours is about! million‘s i‘m frankly a bit disappointed in her ordeal that! i expected more from him. franco disappointed in pep guardiola. —— disappointed in pep guardiola. —— disappointed in pep guardiola. —— disappointed in her ordeal. i will miss the next match, i am a bit disappointed, i had to pick one of the other went with the man city away because i felt that was the biggest of the games, and i was right! and why wouldn‘t write us off just yet, it was only 9—0! you never
6:49 pm
know, you never know. so... iwould imagine that guardiola is setting new standards for his team, you know, you‘d say you beat rotherham seven, now you got to beat this by more than seven, now you‘ve got to beat that! but we lost at home to liverpool in the league cup, i wouldn‘t be surprised if pep guardiola has noted that result and say, you‘ve got to win more than they did. i think if we can prevent something like that then we‘ll have a little bit back. did not admire the endless optimism! —— you have got to admire the endless optimism! now think back to when you were at school, and how you‘d feel if a double world champion turned up to take your pe class. well, that‘s what happened to a group of pupils at liverpool college when taekwondo superstar
