hello this is bbc news with geeta guru—murthy. the headlines. a saudi teenager whose efforts to escape her family gained worldwide attention, has arrived in canada where she's been granted asylum. protesters have marched through central london demanding a general election and an end to austerity. hundreds of demonstrators were wearing yellow vests — copying the yellow vest protests in france. two french firefighters and a spanish tourist have been killed in a powerful explosion in central paris caused by a gas leak at a bakery. nearly 50 other people were injured. prison sentences of less than six months in england and wales could be scrapped, under plans being considered by the government. ministers think it could reduce re—offending. now on bbc news it's time for sportsday. hello and welcome to sportsday, with me and her.
7:31 pm
the headlines this evening, after two defeats on the spin liverpool are back to winning ways in the premier league. it's rice, rice baby for west ham as declan stars in their win over arsenal. and it's a great day for the irish in the champions cup with wins for ulster and leinster over their french opponents. also coming up in the programme, as andy murray begins the long goodbye, we ask what's next for british tennis. and we're in gravesend ahead of the british cyclocross championships, what is cyclocross? find out later in the programme. plenty to get through but we'll start with football
7:32 pm
because after a week off for the fa cup, the premier league returns front and centre, and katherine's got all of the day's headlines. and did mo salah say for liverpool's title dreams? —— save their dreams. there was manchester city before that. let's start with the day's late kick—off, chelsea hosting a newcastle side who are now in the relegation places after the rest of the day's results. the second half is just under way at stamford bridge, and the score is 1—1. pedro opening the scoring for chelsea with a lovely take and lob, ciaran clark with the equaliser just before half—time. we'll keep you up to date. the idea that brighton would go out and inflict another loss perhaps on the league leaders. but mo salah scored and won a penalty. a win is a win is not pretty.
7:33 pm
they are now seven points clear at top of the premier league. we could have done better and we always can do better. especially when it is excited we win here. it is nice for the opponent. if we do gets on the it is a big surprise and we have to perform and deliver. these players are brilliant. everyone knows we have to improve and we can improve. but we absolutely deserved where and when you win a game is all that you want. manchester city play on monday and spurs play on sunday. they beat newcastle 2—1 and adam was watching this one. newcastle was still sinking in the news that they we re still sinking in the news that they were sinking into the relegation places thanks to results elsewhere. a bad beginning to the visit which almost immediately got worse. chelsea put ahead with their first real chance. not the start that the manager wanted against his former club. his displeasure not ha rd to hard to spot. he will be cheered by
7:34 pm
their response. a wonder for chelsea but one they did not take seriously enough. as they finally gave the fa ns enough. as they finally gave the fans who took the mantra for the northeast some good news. —— the long trip. newcastle after the break coming back out of the bottom three but if that was not signed enough of how quickly fortunes can change. this quite brilliant effort was a reminder for all. this quite brilliant effort was a reminderfor all. that the this quite brilliant effort was a reminder for all. that the final change of this growing. chelsea —positive first leak when in 2019. for newcastle a trip as —— that ends as disappointing as it began. imagine you are 19 years old and you find yourself playing for west ham and ingle for the first time and you give it a go. that's what happened for declan rice today because arsenal. they put up a 1—0 when. arsenal not swear for this
7:35 pm
just a second time this season for some and that failure to hit the target for arsenal is of the chances for a top four finish have been severely dented. chances at both ends but arsenal failed to score in the week for the first time this season of that has dented their top four chances. who wants to be a west ham player? marco wants out if you believe? he wants in. he nearly endeared himself to the fans in what would become a trend in the first half who was just wide of the mark. anderson was next to keep the ball boys busy. and although they were frightening,... he almost squeeze the ball in through the right side of the post wasn't time for somebody to hit the target surely one minute before half—time declan rice was off. but then a quick break and the teenager found the right solution, a first senior goal, handsome reward for a new contract signed at christmas. five more years for a man who is enjoying be a west ham pair. hisjob is not quite done
7:36 pm
yet fortunately for him and a essay disappointing afternoon for the gunners. an afternoon that one man will hope to recreate in the london stadium for many years to come. i think that was my 55th game today. and lads kept saying "shoot, you've got a good left and right foot". and i thought why not. i think you can see from the lads running over how much it meant to them as well for me to score. i cannot put it into words, honestly. you can see on my face, just delighted. and it is his 20th birthday on monday i understand. things not going well for fulham. their season is pretty much summed up by what happened at burnley this afternoon. they scored three own goals in three minutes and that meant bernie didn't have to do anything else in order to win 2—1. burnley up to 15th, for him still in the relegation zone. it's unbelievable in this period. we started great, we scored and then they suddenly scored twice with the own goal. it's unbelievable.
7:37 pm
we had the chance to draw the match in the first half but we touch the crossbar and the second half we tried to do our best. we put them under pressure and move the ball well. we played so well. and they save the ball on the crossline. it's unbelievable. i don't think we are as good today as i were to previous performances. fair play to them. they asked a lot of questions for us, we showed resiliency, we show the characteristics we show before to make sure we get a result. claudio did not sign please but that at all. —— sound pleas at all. let's have a look at the rest of today's scores. and things are looking increasingly desparate for huddersfield. they're still eight points off safety after a 0—0 draw at cardiff. southampton moved out of the releation places thanks to a brilliant 2—1 win at leicester,
7:38 pm
i say brilliant because they were down to ten men for half of that game. and tom cleverly scored his first goal since december 2017 as watford beat crystal palace. more football to come, but for now back to karthi. also a big day in the champions cup, and what a day it was for irish rugby. huge wins for ulster and leinster over two sides who were unbeaten going into the weekend. i spoke to chrisjones who has been keeping an eye on the action for us. i asked him iasked him how i asked him how important that when was? 0n the surface you would expect leinster to win that match, they are the defending champions. they are the top team in europe. but when you consider tolouse have been doing. they have been a great form. add to that the fact that leinster were missing a couple of players key names.
7:39 pm
the world player of the year. notjust to win the game but to win with a bonus point and take control pull one just speaks volumes for the incredible strength and depth of leinster rugby. it will take a brave person to bet against them to top the pool and going onto another european final perhaps. strengthened depth for irish rugby i guess. does this help with their quarterfinal hopes? this is a huge win for ulster. a tricky period on and off the field in belfast. there have been inspired signings, the south african coming back has been an asset. and jason stockdale is a world—class finisher. he has smashed all kinds of records for ireland in the six nations grand slam win in 2018 and in 2019 he is back at it. he scored a try in all five rounds of the champions cup. two today they wrote a bit
7:40 pm
of luck at the end ulster but they got the win. but even though they are at the top of the pool ulster still has a great chance if not winning the pool but certainly going through to the quarterfinals as one of the best runners—up and it means we could see three irish teams and two scottish teams in the quarterfinals bath edging past wasps and another defeat for the falcons. well after montpellier‘s win, edinburgh kept up the pace in the same pool and gave their hopes of progressing a huge boost with a 28—17 win at bottom side toulon.
7:41 pm
blair kinghorn crossed for this try to put them in front early in the second half. edinburgh pushed on and after that superb take from james johnstone, he went on to run in one of the tries of the weekend — their third of the game, and it sealed a brilliant win in the south of france. it puts edinburgh back on top of pool 5 — they've only progressed from the pool stage twice in the competition's history. strong showings from irish and edinburgh. in wales, scarlets are already out of contention for a knock—out place but they still put in a strong showing leicester, scoring five tries to take a bonus point win. 33-10. also coming up in the programme. we'll tell you how a british riderfinished 14th at the dakar rally, but still won the stage. and should leeds be punished in the wake of spygate? the debate rages on. the moral conduct of sport has been severely breached here i think. let's reflect on
7:42 pm
what a couple of days it's been for andy murray, as he comes to terms with the news he broke yesterday that his career will come to an end this season. when? we don't yet know. it could be as early as monday morning, if he loses his first round match at the australian open, and the pain in his hip is too much to take. he plays the spaniard roberto bautista agut on the main court in melbourne and you wonder how much of a lift he'll get from the thousands of well wishes he's had in the last 2a hours, including from some of the biggest names in tennis. it is quite a shock for me. we are the same age and the same generation. it is kind of sad to see him going through what he has been going through in the last couple of years with his injuries. as someone who has been through a major injury with my elbow the last couple of years, i can definitely empathise with him and relate to what he is going through. 0bviously probably the extent of his injury is even worse than mine. he has a good fighting spirit.
7:43 pm
he has been a hard worker. and it's not nice to finish like this because it is great to finish when you want to finish but not because of injury. overall, one hip puts everything on the balance will be the positive things that will balance things have at the end. it's probably not wheat he wanted to end things. but he can't manage that. pretty sad news. he was one of my closest friends on tour. i think everyone said their piece yesterday but i knew i was always going to do something because he was one of my best friends. we did stuff like ride on roller coasters together. it's a sad day for the sport. he is a legend and someone i think everyone can relate to, especially myself. the end is nigh then for murray, but what next for british tennis?
7:44 pm
after years, decades, even of disappointment, murray single—handedly raised the profile of the game in this country. so naturally, the focus will now turn to his successor. joe lynskey reports. commentator: the waiting is over! andy murray is the britton who re—defined his sport's ambition but after the waiting and the thrill of the ride, what's next? his match on monday morning could be the last time we see him on court. so hampered is murray by injury, he is not expect to challenge for the australian open. more realistic hopes could rest with kyle edmund — britain's new number one who reached the semifinals last year. the experiences i have had with him and memories in terms of training with him, to getting to know personally,
7:45 pm
then seeing what he has done on the court, it's a very unfair question to say you have to fill the void because he is gone or something like that. further down the british ranks are young players approaching the spotlight. already cameron nori has made a davis cup impact and last night he made his first tour final. but at the same age of 23, murray was already a grand slam finalist and british tennis is still assessing what it looks like without him. i think it looks good but no—one can replace them too quickly. dan evans hopefully on the way back. cameron nori is doing great as well. but it will be a while before those shoes are filled. commentator: the dream is over for another year. the home expectations have now changed on the grass. after the waiting andy murray brought the sunlight. now this sport must emerge from what he leaves behind. joe lynskey, bbc news. let's catch up with the rest of the day's football then, and katherine the championship continues to throw up all kinds of surprises?
7:46 pm
it continues to provoke debate as well. leeds won last night in the aftermath of spygate, more on that in a moment they're four points clear at the top now. but there's been some shifting just below them. norwich were held to a 1—1 draw by west brom and those dropped points mean they've been overtaken by sheffield united in second place. they beat qpr. other results to pick out, a 3—0 win for hull over sheffield united — that's their sixth league win on the bounce. no question they're the in—form side in the championship at the moment. and there was a much needed win for bottom side ipswich they beat rotherham 1—0. they're still four points behind bolton, but that'll have given them some hope. one of the biggest football talking points of the season then — just how out of line were leeds united and their manager marcelo bielsa when they sent a spy to their opponents' training ground? bielsa has taken full responsibility for the issue ahead of the match with derby county last night
7:47 pm
which leeds won 2—0. it's divided fans and pundits alike. i am not happy about it. the moral code of conduct for sport has been severely breached here. it's a johnny english moement with bolt cutters, ladders... hasn't this been going on for ages and football and other sports we are 27 games into the week this year. what is it that bielsa will be also does not know already about derby county? why must he have a spy there? it's a guy trying to get the edge on her opponent now has he crossed a line, i think so i think it is more an embarrassment to need to get that kind of detail on the game. but i'm sure it will not affect the results massively to knowjust a few things before the game. well earlier today leeds released
7:48 pm
a statement apologising to derby for what happened — but there are still calls from some quarters for the championship leaders to be given a points deduction. mike bushell‘s been getting the latest from adam pope, who commentates on leeds united for bbc radio leeds. they have spoken to derby county to apologise for marcelo bielsa. they said there is an integrity issue and we have breached. hopefully this will bring to an end. but bielsa feels did not commit a crime. there was no property damaged. it has something he has done all his career since his time at other clubs. certainly an issue that has polarised opinions over the last day or so. you've had former international stars ridiculing the whole affair is saying this is laughable if the likes of my former coach said we had been spied on.
7:49 pm
0thers saying it is not a story. but others saying leeds should face a points deduction over this. i think to say there is a points deduction needed is way beyond any sort of reasonable measure because at the end of the day he has admitted to doing this himself. again, what rule has a broken? culturally you can say we are different. the violation of fair play in the eye of matt lampard and derby county. there may be a sanction and maybe marcelo bielsa will accept anything that comes his way. perhaps a fine or a reprimand, but it is the club it doesn't seem so. i think we do have to expect at the end of the day the one thing that has come through all season is that there is a matter of honesty and he is humble and a servant of the game. and he genuinely feels he has done nothing wrong here. it is just not cricket though, is it? and before i finish, how about this from the irish premiership. this is goalkeeper elliot morris scoring his first goal in 723

appearances for glentoran. a 70—yard free kick as they beat institute 2—0. look at the celebrations. a p pa re ntly apparently he said he had the wind behind. 0h, apparently he said he had the wind behind. oh, that's how it worked. it was a dramatic second race of the formula e season in morocco as the belgianjerome d'ambrosio took the win. he was helped by a collision involving team—mates antonio felix de costa and britain's alexander sims, they had a bump with ten minutes remaining. that handed the lead to d'ambrosio, who's now top of the standings. we have some drama and motorsport. staying with motorsport, and the british rider sam sunderland won stage five of the dakar rally — after being promoted from 14th because he stopped to help a rider who had fallen. the 29—year—old lost more than ten minutes while he helped the portugese rider paulo goncalves but, for his sportsmanship, sunderland was given that time back.
7:51 pm
and he won the stage. european 1500m champion laura muir began a busy 2019 schedule with a win on home soil. by anchoring great britain to victory in the great stirling cross country mixed relay. the british team built a handy lead for her and she flew home at the finish line. were the british team who won the great stirling cross country it's all part of a season in which muir hopes to win world championship gold. the team set up great for me and ijust had to be strong in the finish on that last leg. i am happy we can continue our winning streak in that event and the teams in general did great as well. people were shouting out my high school everywhere it is fantastic. i love racing on home soil. and i love the option to be here today. let's run you through some more of today's sport stories, and charley hull has claimed herfirst victory in more than two years after winning the opening tournament of the 2019

european tour season. a final round of 69 helped her win the ladies 0pen in abu dhabi by a single shot, for only her second career title. britain's elise christie's back with a bang. she's won silver in the 1500m at the european short track championships in the netherlands. it's the first time she's raced in an individual competition since injuring her ankle at the winter olympics in pyeongchang last year. she's competing in the 1000m tomorrow as well. japan's mikuru suzuki has won the women's world darts championship at lakeside. she beat england's lorraine winstanley by three sets to nil to take home the title and £12,000 in winnings. and amir khan will return to the boxing ring later this year. he's agreed to fight the american terence crawford, who's the unbeaten wbo world welterweight champion. the fight will take place on april 20th, in either las vegas or new york. ever heard of cyclocross? well for those who haven't, it is basically cross—country cycling. 0ff—road, with lots of different surfaces and obstacles to navigate. if you want to see how its done properly —

the best cyclocross athletes in the country are gathering in kent this weekend for the british championships. today we've seen the veteran and youth races but tomorrow the elite men and women get to tackle the course at cyclopark in gravesend from wherejuliette parkin sent us this report. if you want to see how its done properly, the best cyclocross athletes in the country are gathering in kent this weekend for the british championships. today we've seen the veteran and youth races but tomorrow the elite men and women get to tackle the course at cyclopark in gravesend from wherejuliette parkin sent us this report. it is all about speed and attack. about skill and strength. and not letting your nerves get the better of you. this is cyclocross, as big in belgium as football and big money in europe. now, it's among the fastest growing sports in the uk. if you can imagine a cross between road racing, mountain biking and a bit of cross—country running, that is essentially what it is, a bit of a mishmash. you have to get off and run with the bike.
7:54 pm
you also have to be good at cycling and running. races usually consists of multiple short wraps over a duration of the a0 minutes to one hour. a sense, descents, steep campers, these are all part of the sport. it has taken four years of hard work to get the national champ chips to gravesend and among those hoping to take the title of this weekend is the world junior champion ben tullet. the severn 0aks rider says he is happy to be racing a bit closer to home. it's pretty special because travelling to belgium every weekend for such so to have a race wasn't home is pretty cool. cyclocross is reported to be the most participated in cycle discipline in the country and is increasingly popular among women and girls especially it grassroots. my brother started and i thought that looks fun so i had a little go and then we had the local club and did it around the school field. we did that and then decided to do side racing and i really liked it. the course is so technical, there is everything here.
7:55 pm
you go up hills, off camper, you have to get back on the bike, everything you can think of this course has it. 10—year—olds to those aged 60 plus will compete in races. it promises to be a tough, challenging and thrilling weekend. challenging, throwing at a little bit difficult because it is scary. too hard for me. we will be back later on this evening. more for me on bbc news in about a quarter our time. bye—bye. good evening. we are looking at a cloudy picture is to go through the night and there will be rain for some of us as well. the rain has arrived in western scotland. he saw
