we to make more. we are grateful need to make more. we are grateful for you talking to us, doctor anna jones from the british antarctic survey. now it is time for news watch. samira ahmed looks back at the controversy over last week's question time. hello and welcome to news watch with me samira ahmed. was diane abbott treated unfairly on last week's question time programme? and the moment when breakfast told this man his dream of a fly past to commemorate victims of a wartime plane crash would come true. there have been thousands of complaints, and more are still coming into the bbc, following last year's —— last week's edition of question time, in which journalist isabel oakeshott challenged the shadow home secretary diane abbott about how the labour party was doing in the opinion

suggested the conservatives were ahead, and the shadow home secretary mentioned some other earlier polls, which showed labour in the lead, and we should have made that context clear and i we should have made that context clearand i am we should have made that context clear and i am happy to do that now. diane and many other viewers wanted an apology and were not satisfied with that. but there were wider concerns too, diane abbott says she is subjected to threats of rape and violence on a daily basis, and received half of all the abuse of tweets sent to female mps before the last election. it was in that context that her office said they we re context that her office said they were appalled at the way the mp was treated on the programme. according to newspaper reports can

some audience members said there we re some audience members said there were personaljokes some audience members said there were personal jokes told some audience members said there were personaljokes told in that warm up session about diane abbott, but no evidence of that has been released. here, though, are some clips from the programme itself. are there any errors you would be prepared to come promote on, a customs union for example? we are happy to talk to the government about some sort of movement... you know what worries me more than brexit, and that is if we had a general election and labour got in a diane abbott... applause diane abbott... applause diane abbott... applause diane abbott was responsible for policing, immigration and the policing, immigration and—the policing, immigration and—tho g” hang on, = policing, immigration and—tho g” hang on, you i policing, immigration and—tho g” hang on, you have national security. hang on, you have given 3.23.1 me. 77: .., ., ...... .,... a national security. hang on, you have given 3.23.1 me. is: ..c ., ...... .c... a applause f prime minister cannot rule out that‘rima minister cannotrola out because the'frirne minister cannotrole out because no - is what the legal default is. so she would have to introduce new legislation. so

why. .. to introduce new legislation. so why... so were those examples of a biased attack on diane abbott by the panel and the audience, stirred up by the presenter, or simply robust changes typical of question time? thousands of people thought the former, with lucy loader objecting that... but others like andrew chapman disagreed. well, the labour party has lodged a formal complaint with the bbc over the programme, and the bbc has said
7:50 pm
it is because that is going on that they can't talk about it on newswatch. instead, they have raised the statement. well, i am joined well, iamjoined by well, i am joined by one view of the programme, thank you for coming on newswatch. just some up for me, what did you think of that addition of question time? i thought diane abbott was questioned a lot. i felt there was definitely a focus on her, and her opinions. i do feel that she was interrupted on several occasions, by isabel oakeshott in particular, and the moderator did not necessarily intervene in those interventions. i also felt the
7:51 pm
atmosphere towards her was slightly aggressive, in the sense that she seemed to have been questioned i think a lot as to labour policies where i think the focus should have been on the conservative party and their policies towards brexit, and also the failure not to get the deal through. and she was also subject to personal critique from the audience, which i think perhaps was again not quite proportionate, again, it is not something you can perhaps control or influence, but perhaps that level of questioning should not have been engaged with, and i also believed that she shared not have been corrected, as far as opinion polls are concerned, because many opinion polls actually do show that labour are slightly ahead of the conservative party. do you think that was just an honest mistake or should the bbc be apologising?” believe it should be apologising for that, because most polls i think, certainly the ones i follow, show that labour is slightly ahead in the polls. so that clarification we saw
7:52 pm
that was given in the most recent edition of question time, you don't think that is enough?” edition of question time, you don't think that is enough? i think there could have been more explanation as to why she was cut off last week when she made that statement. what do you think of the allegations of inappropriatejokes being do you think of the allegations of inappropriate jokes being told do you think of the allegations of inappropriatejokes being told in the warm up? i can't verify that because i wasn't there, but i know that diane abbott is subject to a lot of personal abuse on social media, so i'm not entirely surprised that this might have happened, and if that is the case i think that is inappropriate. you are a labour supporter, i think it is fair we should raise that, you used to live in her constituency as well? yes. one could say, are you asking for special treatment for her? 1 it i “i fi lira: “i fi it‘ifiji ii‘i'fi fi ii‘ii‘ii zi’ ii‘i'fi 1? ii‘ii‘ii ei'iie. fit??? think that she receives a ‘ negative, it she receives a ‘ negative, almost sceives a of negative, almost aggressive questioning, which i felt in this particular episode other panellists did not receive to the same extent. ijust wish

did not receive to the same extent. i just wish there had did not receive to the same extent. ijust wish there had been more focused perhaps on her policies. evenif focused perhaps on her policies. even if there are reasons for complaint, and we know that thousands of people have been complaining, there are some viewers who are saying there is something dangerous in a political party trying to pressure the bbc over this, we know the labour party has made a formal complaint. can you see that concern? i think to a certain extent, because probably the labour party or segment of the labour party may be feel they haven't always received fair treatment. jeremy corbyn certainly perhaps hasn't a lwa ys corbyn certainly perhaps hasn't always received a fair treatment by always received a fair treatment by a certain segment of the media, so i can see that. i think they are quite concerned also because it seems a lot of the abuse on social media is targeted against diane abbott, so i think maybe all of this comes together and maybe is part of why they are complaining, as well. but, me'ie 3:15 kit'gélsflglgé 52 2511. ell" 7 7 ... .. .., . me'ie 3:15 lil'sélsflglgé 52 2511. ell.. 7 7 ... .. .., . i think me'ie 3:15 lil'sélsflglgé 52 2511. ell 7 l ... .. .., . i think it is to yes. thank you so certain degree, yes. we say that we certain degree, yes. we - say that we are much, we should say that we are hoping that someone from question

time will be coming on a future edition of newswatch but in the meantime thank you very much. thank you. after rescuers failed to find their plane, which disappeared somewhere over the enlist channel on monday, the search for missing footballer emiliano sala and pilot david ibbotson has been called off. but some viewers felt that bbc news reports wrongly focused much more on the former than the latter. here's jane williamson. now, if you weeks ago, breakfast presenter dan walker was out walking his dog in a park in sheffield when he met tony foals. in 1944, mr faulds was playing in the same park when he witnessed the fatal crash of an american bomber plane. thinking himself partly responsible because the plane was trying to avoid crashing into him, he regularly tends to the memorial that has been put up to honour the ten airmen on
