the number of young victims of knife crime admitted to hospitals in england has risen by more than 50% in the past five years. staff at london zoo say they are devastated after an endangered sumatran tiger is killed by another tiger. now on bbc news it's time for sportsday. hello and welcome to sportsday. the headlines this evening.... last year's grand slam champions are off the mark — as ireland beat scotland after a tough battle at murrayfield. a much—changed wales hold on to beat italy in rome, thanks largely to dan biggar‘s boot... and the manchester united express just keeps on going,

as victory over fulham moves them into the top four. also coming up in the programme... emotional scenes at southampton as cardiff pay tribute to emiliano sala. and another collapse? england's top order fails once again on the first day of the third test in st lucia. good evening and welcome to the programme... a week on from their six nations defeat to england in dublin last week, defending champions ireland travelled to edinburgh to put their campaign back on track. they had to deal with a stubborn scotland though, who hadn't been beaten at murrayfield in a championship game since 2016.
7:32 pm
our sports correspondent katie gornall was there. the six nations is a serious plate at gale force where momentum could blow one night way and that the next. after the opening we can scotla nd next. after the opening we can scotland have it, i really don't. a bruising defeat to england last week meant eileen arrived at murray fail with hopes of retaining their six nations title on the lie. scotland had their own aspirations. an area that was ruthlessly punished. for pitch with a shoulder injury after just 60 minutes. before he had made it out of the tunnel, arlind struck again. last year's player of the tournamentjacob again. last year's player of the tournament jacob stockdale to slick and too quick. it was time for it scotland's of the star to step forward. finn russell seems to view the game in slow motion and his computer but sam johnson sir. now the pressure was all on island. at half—time they can't whether the scottish storm 2812—10. x further

7:34 pm
we have got to be better than that. defences were strong today. both teams ran a few errors. i thought the first half was very good from our side of it. i thought it was a very good test match. the second half, the pace went out and we didn't really string the phases together like we did in the first half. that sent our execution at times. to rome then where wales followed up on last week's win in paris with an unconvnincing victory over italy at the stadio 0lympico. it was a recrod equalling iith successive victory, and tees up a crunch cardiff clash against england in a fortnight‘s time. hanah lupton reports. wells changed ten players for this match but one thing state consistent, lending. they were aiming fortheir consistent, lending. they were aiming for their 11th consistent, lending. they were aiming fortheiriith in consistent, lending. they were aiming for their 11th in a row. having left it late against france, it's only 60 seconds to get up and running against italy with dan

kicking them ahead. wales struggled to break through the host resolute defence which at the other end managed to bulldozer over for only the first half try. despite that wales had a five point cushion at the break. the tempo was about to pick up. the man in red got the breeding state they needed whenjosh adams burst through from the left. then gareth‘s chip set up 0wen watkin for his first try in a whales shirt. 0nce watkin for his first try in a whales shirt. once that was converted, wells lists 16 points ahead. a lead was cut back when italy crossed over for a second time. that means that his team had forgotten how to lose, and no wonder that his 11 wings in a i’ow. and no wonder that his 11 wings in a row. the first time they have done that for more than a century. well that's the six nations covered. holly can tell us now what's been happening in the premier league today. it's been a busy day lots of movers and shakers at the top and bottom of the table — more on that in just a moment — but there was something more
7:36 pm
important than football on the minds of all players in the premier league this afternoon. you may have noticed they were all wearing black armbands today. that was in honour of emiliano sala after his body was identified this week. in southampton — where cardiff city were playing for the fisrt time since that news this week — a minutes silence was held as well. while many also wore yellow daffodils in honour of the striker. when that game did get uderway — sol bamba opened the scoring in the second half but southampton looked like they were going to salvage a point afterjack stephens leveller in the 91st miniute — but a last gasp winner means cardiff take the three points and mvoe out of the relegation zone. the crowd have been amazing. you saw them today. i'm really pleased. a long way they have come and they deserve that the last few weeks. it's been difficult for everybody. i thought today was appropriate. first time since 1962 we have got back—to—back wins, and i think emiliano would like that. i think he would feel really proud
7:37 pm
that the lads have done him justice. meanwhile it's business as usual for liverpool — who restored their three point lead at the top. jurgen klopp admitted today they knew they needed to improve. for us, we wanted to show reaction. and not on the noise around, only on the performance we had. it is ourjob not only to come through somehow, we wanted to convince. we wanted to really perform. and today we did that. we had outstanding football moments on the pitch. i think the first goal, second ball with the set piece and was nice. it was a tough game for us today. i
7:38 pm
thought liverpool were excellent. disappointing was the manner of the goals. the second goal is a turnover of possession for us i thought. as for manchester united, they have now moved into the top floor of the premier league following a convincing 3—0 win at fulham. it was a 10th victory in 11 games under caretaker manager 0le gunnar solskjaer. fulham remain in serious trouble and seven points from safety. here's stuart pollitt with more. under 0le gunnar solskjaer, manchester united have been revitalised. today they were reshuffled. six and changes against struggling fulham settled the better. a waste of their first and best chance. paul pogba made them pay. a ferocious strike. sergio unmoved, pogba able to show off his moves to the united fans. that was nothing compared to what

andi doing it the right way. me myself and i will fight into the end to stay with us. today i think their work was very good. we didn't win in a long time. today i think we can't complain. 0ur way is continuing. at the moment they have been closer than tougher. it was an unhappy return to watford for former manager marco silva as his everton side lost 1—0 at vicarage road. andre gray scored the only goal in the second half — his first goal since september. a third straight league defeat for everton — who had kurt zouma sent off after full time. i felt a little bit different. but i'm very happy for all our supporters because maybe for them today it was something different, something special, but for us it is important because we have got three important points. we created more than enough chances during the match to score a goal.
7:41 pm
after the 1—0 to them, we created a chance to score. and the second half, two balls off the crossbar. and the shots were created. but at the moment, we did not score. so let's have a quick look at the other resultswe haven't told you about so far. and that was a 1—1 draw at selhurst park between crystal palace and west ham at selhurst park. mark noble's first half penalty was levelled by wilfried zaha's second half equaliser. in the late game — burnley have beaten brighton 3—1 to move out of the relegation zone. so let's have a look at what does to the table then — well liveprool back at the top — three points above manchester city. and there's manchester united back in the top four since the start of the season — they move above chelsea on 51 points down at the bottom then — that esult in southampton has lifted cardiff above southampton and out of the relegation zone. and fulham's defeat to man united mean they remain firmyl entrnched in the relegation zone.

right that pretty much wraps up the day's premier league news. over to hugh now for the day's other football and the rest of the day's sport. it's scottish cup weekend, and kilmarnock have held rangers to a goalless draw. rangers missed a golden chance to take the lead when daniel bachmann saved james tavernier‘s penalty in the first half. then in the second it was joe worral‘s turn have his head in his hands as his free header went wide. the two sides will meet in a replay at ibrox on the 20th of february. in the day's earlier scottish cup ties partick thistle won 1—0 at east fife to progress. hibernian beat raith 3—1 and a bit of a shock at premiership saint mirren who lost 2—1 at home to championship side dundee united. west bromwich albion have beaten stoke at the bet365 stadium to go fourth in the championship.
7:43 pm
in a tight game it was dwight gayle who made the breakthrough, heading the baggies into the lead after a well worked set piece. that was gayles sixteenth goal in the league this season. in the day's earlier game leeds returned to the top of the table thanks to a 101st minute equaliser at middlesbrough. it finished 1—1 at the riverside. there were wins today for bristol city, preston, derby and nottingham forest. birmingham led 4—0 at qpr — quite a comeback was on the cards at loftus road — the home side missing a penalty late on to make it 4—4. the games at rotherham and sheffield wednesday both ended in draws while swansea beat millwall. england's cricketers have endured a difficult start in the third and final test against the west indies in saint lucia. the hosts have an unassailable 2—0 lead going into the match with england now 125—11. patrick gearey has been following the action. a cry to the heavens for help or a

what about the tap water for a whole? feels like it's already down. not the series they would have wa nted not the series they would have wanted at all. again another familiar day i guess. it is. for me i looked at the start of the day and quite helpful. keatonjennings and rory burns, the way they were playing chilled a bit more promise in terms of they seemed to be more willing to be patient and show that discipline that they have been searching for. but i guess it is a matter of the way the wickets have fallen. players playing perhaps a little bit too loose. that is something that they will be going away to work on. because they have finally got one more test match after this or one more test match series against ireland before they get into the anxious series. a big year ahead for england in the shortfall. test matches as well, with the ashes to come later in the year. how do you think england will not approach the rest of their time with the bat in hand? is it a pitch that you would have wanted to bet on first? do you think there will be more difficulties ahead? it will be

a lot of talk about the wickets throughout the whole series. if anything it has been a little bit slower. it should work in favour for the baptist especially with the west indies, pace attack that they have not come in very threatening. from that point of view, i think there is a wicket that is conducive to getting big scores. but theyjust need to make sure they try to have a big partnership. it continues on the bbc sport website. thank you so much for joining bbc sport website. thank you so much forjoining us. it's been a busy day at the athletics indoor british championships so far. in the 60 metres hurdles, cindy 0fili beat katarina johnson—thompson to pick up her first national title. 0fili, who is the younger sister of national record holder tiffany porter, claimed the win to mark a successful return from a serious achilles injury. johnson—thompson has chance to make amends in the long jump tomorrow. the time off may me really realise that this part means so much to me.
