6:30 pm
and that's the most love what i do and that's the most important thing. did you like to design for the movies i cost him and fashion designer different, but have you had designed for movies. fashion designer different, but have you had designed for moviesl fashion designer different, but have you had designed for movies. i have over the years, but not actually sort of designed for a movie, actually that would be a fun project, i really enjoyed that, you know, sort of being a part of it as creating a story it's like having your own creating a story it's like having your own show in la not that one. look at what rachel weisz is wearing. that's spectacular. that's it is. i would like to know who it's by. it's quite beautiful. i think she's one of our very best actresses at the moment. she's had a very long career, wearing a gown several years ago, and then maybe not finding the best parts for her. at the moment, she is on fire. she's brilliant and the favourites, that disobedience, and an un—orthodox
6:31 pm
jewish community, she was tremendous in that. she's finding, really finding her power as an actress, and a producer, and a creator. she really is one of our past. we will see a lot more of her being awarded. she is going to get those great parts, and bring the performance of topsyis parts, and bring the performance of topsy is tremendous. she's got an edge to her that does drama and comedy as well. there must be a very difficult balance, if you want to stay busy, you want to be on screen, but you have too, you can't take any old script that comes in. you have to be choosy. you do have to be careful, that sometimes might mean that you are two years out of the game, and it falls through. she had a baby with daniel craig, your circumstances could change, you can have a child, and take time off, and the film has to wait for you to come around again. sometimes he can find a director, who really gets you. she was cast in the lobster a couple yea rs was cast in the lobster a couple years ago, and put back together again for the favourites. so you get someone again for the favourites. so you get someone who gets you and finds the
6:32 pm
best pa rt someone who gets you and finds the best part of you, your i'm using a sort of way, and i think she's really finding the people that she wa nts to really finding the people that she wants to work with, and having the confidence to come as you say, choose the right roles, and the right roles for her that she has had her eye on for a long time. and have that confidence to say no, even if it means turning work down for a while, because i'm sure you must go through it, will it ever come around for me again? absolutely. your agents do the same thing. you can't do it six weeks of theatre, very don't act thank you very much, you need to do a blockbuster. i don't look great and i superhero outfit, i want to do a low—budget british india. you have to be very strong, in the end, you are getting oscar nominations. leticia wright has just arrived. black panther. black panther. black panther, she plays the young scientist, the young sister and daughter in black panther. she kind of embeds the use of for all of the
6:33 pm
vibrating m, stay with the me on this if you haven't seen the film. i think she's fantastic young actress we we re think she's fantastic young actress we were sitting next to her at a world television society dinner a few years ago, and i didn't know who she was. but she knew you. she called me sir. a respect at last. i thought she was tremendous in this. she had confidence. everyone in it black panther dead. young british stars have this confidence, john by eta hasn't and star wars as well, i thought my gosh, our british actors, when they get the chance they really bring it. there is no nervousness, there is no, they can really dominate the stage and the screen when they are asked. that you read what black panther is about, and it's quite mind blowing, the concept of it where it sat, the storyline, and then the special effects on top. i'm a disappointed that they were not nominated more tonight for black panther, i hope it wins for special effects, because though those
6:34 pm
special effects are great, yes it's a super pharaoh found him that's africa on the map, it puts the responsibly of economy, and the black economy on the map. as i say, at the bristles with the confidence in black culture and black power that had not been seen before. also maybe this country, this can quite deal with that kind of exhibit strong, but i thought everyone in it michael b jordan was strong, but i thought everyone in it michael bjordan was extraordinary, forest whitaker, and the teacher writes, so i hope for black panther and it's fair that wins the rising star award. also, she is a rising star. we've got a number of gowns coming down, the red carpet, which i can see, lots of sparkles tonight. still quite a lot of black, but offset by these incredible sequins and jewels. i know. quite a lot of silver, and as he say sequins. a
6:35 pm
little bit of glitter we are seeing. there is a bit of a common theme, are you seeing there is a bit of a common theme, are you seeing as there is a bit of a common theme, are you seeing as well over time, the confidence of british designers fashion designers has really grown, just asjason was fashion designers has really grown, just as jason was saying british actors in the film industry. what we seeing now is more than confidence. it's a whole different level of british design, i mean british design a sort of london fashion week was all kind of cool and interesting, whereas this kind of the refinance from paris, and immune, but that's completely changed and now, we've got some really solid businesses with a whole different level of luxury. more white on the carpet. this time olivia colman. so maybe we are into white and silver, that is two big
6:36 pm
trends. bradley cooper is behind her as well, and of course we were talking to young women, just by our platform, we were absolutely here to see him. he wasn'tjust the star of star is born himself, he had a back role as well. you about the music, he sang, he directed for the first time. and he did a brilliant job. directed for the first time. and he did a brilliantjob. i think most of it was shot, when i heard about the star is born, with lady gaga i thought this is going to be terrible. do we need another star is born? the barbra streisand version was bad enough. did we need another version? especially with lady gaga, who was never acted before. yes, i know she can sing, but can she act? you know, they absolutely surprised everyone. i think the film is a real success. i don't think it's a perfect film, i think it's much better than the second hour, but the
6:37 pm
music account is tremendous. it's got great signs, she belts them out, and she makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. let's go back to lizo. think you very much, i am joined on the red carpet by pete stanfield, people have seen you in atlanta, they have seen you play snoop dogg and straight out of compton, and of course and get out, what does it mean to you to get this kind of recognition, this nomination tonight? it's quite nice, thank you tonight? it's quite nice, thank you to bafta, and everybody that's involved. in making this possible. it's quite nice to be here. it's a little cold, but it's cool. such a variety of roles, is that a deliberate strategy for you, orjust the way it worked out? it'sjust the way it's worked out. ijust happen to have opportunities to do so many different things, and so shouts out to all the creators that make that possible. and what have you back next, what are people going to see on screen doing what? you will see me knives out with daniel craig, chris evans, and they will see me in another movie with adam sandler.
6:38 pm
fantastic, key thank you very much, best of luck tonight. thank you. margo robbie hasjust arrived, she is presenting a word, and she's also nominated. she is nominated in the supporting actress category, for praying queen elizabeth and mary queen of scots. a very different role, last year she was nominated for eye time yet, the ice skater, nasher place queen elizabeth, it's a role many have played. you have to be prepared to it not necessarily look your best in that role all the time. she certainly does come when gets chickenpox. she looks like a bowl of rice crispies on her face. chickenpox. she looks like a bowl of rice crispies on herface. she manages to carry it off brilliantly. up manages to carry it off brilliantly. up against at this very gorgeous young women played by a different actress, the high forward, the prosthetic nose on her. she'sjust over your prosthetic nose on her. she'sjust over your right shoulder there. she's made her way down here, faster than anybody. there she is, herfans
6:39 pm
are very, than anybody. there she is, herfans are very, very pleased to see margo robbie. she's wearing again, more silver sparkles, but a lot of net around the sleeves, and the bottom of the dress. so some tool, and actually it's i can't work out defence weight sequins, or affect silver sequins, again it's that whole. they want to sparkle. there's also reaction on the red carpet, which i think is also important. it's notjust which i think is also important. it's not just about which i think is also important. it's notjust about how which i think is also important. it's not just about how you feel, but it's also how does that photograph, and has it going to let? and how does that drape and hang? because it can be heavy fabrics, some of alice. you would be surprised. some are lighter than they look. margo robbie, what she's wearing there. there's a hint of the character she's playing. the sort of regal, what the clean might wear sewer on the red carpet. let that what cate blanchett is wearing, she looks like a very sort of simple dress, but the front is just jewels.
6:40 pm
alfonso sharon is with lizo. alfonso, the man behind roma, you did so much cinematography, editing, directing, producing, writing, what was the biggest challenge for you movie? all of the above. yeah. the biggest challenge was to do a story that was so personal to me. you know? digging into my memory. probably was the toughest thing. you know? digging into my memory. probably was the toughest thingm tells the tale of your childhood, doesn't it? it's not about me. it's about the women that raised me. particularly centred in this character who is a domestic worker, from a religious background, and i'm very happy that people are embracing this character, because it's the kind of character thatis because it's the kind of character that is not always in the foreground of cinema. alfonso, thank you very much. best of luck tonight. thank you so much. alfonso carina
6:41 pm
director of roma. you not director. i think you did him at this service. cinematographer, scriptwriter he made the tea. that's why you're here jason, to tell me where i'm going on. he is the most nominated person ever ata he is the most nominated person ever at a single bafta, he has been nominated for six separate awards. they are trying to keep the costs down. it such a personal film, roma, down. it such a personalfilm, roma, and it emphasises how personal it is. rachel weisz is with lizo. she is. best supporting actress, this is a wonderful retelling of the story of queen anna. so entertaining, what was it like to be pa rt entertaining, what was it like to be part of that? very exciting, to work with the goddesses that are olivia coleman and emma stone, it was a true ensemble. each one of us relied on the other does not, so it's likely that all three of us have been recognised here tonight. emma stone is not here, because she's filming. she sends her regards. her english accent is better than mine.
6:42 pm
and of course, how wonderful to see a movie with three female characters of the centre doing so well at the awards, doing so well critically, and at the box office. it is, yes. i mean, women are, we are 51% of the planet may be, so it's good to have our stories told too. definitely. what was the most challenging thing thing for you, wasn't striking the balance between humour and drama? the neck it's true. the film is a mixture it's called it's a thriller, a love story, romantic, tragedy. it's an absurd, ridiculous comedic slapstick. it's many many different terms. i think it was the masterful hand of the director who would say, that tom downham. i'mjust hand of the director who would say, that tom downham. i'm just a hand of the director who would say, that tom downham. i'mjust a member of his orchestra. but not rachel weisz, thank you so much. i thank you. lizo, thank you so much. it looked to me like they were having great fun making the favourite. they did actually. it's not far from
6:43 pm
where i live. they shot, the cinematographer it was good fun on the site, definitely, but they didn't use any lights. they had candles to light, ducks and rabbits running around. a lot of rabbits. and the place was quite cold. so it looked fun, but some of the setups took a long time. and the candles captive learning, and they weren't using normal studio lights. so they wa nted using normal studio lights. so they wanted to make it look like it was the 17th century. yes, we are here with leticia wright, rising star nominee. leticia, if you add up the movies you made last year, ready player one, avengers infinity work, black panther, there is no actor who is movies made more at the box office last year. how does that feel? it feels really amazing, just to be able to look at these films and look at the directors and went to work with them and to be involved in the movies. for them to be such a
6:44 pm
massive success is truly a blessing. so to see massive success is truly a blessing. soto see those figures pop up on instagram, or pop up on twitter, that it made over a billion, it's an honour. so yeah, i'm taking that title. i'll happily accept it, and it just shows that yeah, like title. i'll happily accept it, and itjust shows that yeah, like when you work hard and dedicate yourself, you work hard and dedicate yourself, you know? these things can happen. it can be reality. i want to encourage anybody that wants to do it that yes, it's very possible. encourage anybody that wants to do it that yes, it's very possiblelj was going to say, you are walking proof that if you have faith in yourself, and you put in the hard work, you can achieve a extraordinary things. you are vocal about this on social media and interviews. lam, interviews. iam,| interviews. lam, i know interviews. i am, i know that nothing happens just by myself. i understand that there is a grace and blessing that's over there is a grace and blessing that's over my life. i tried to acknowledge that. i also tried to encourage other people to know that you know, when you have faith in yourself, it just changes your mindset. you can be able to see things in a positive light and be able to see things in a positive lightand an be able to see things in a positive light and an aspect that you now, being ina light and an aspect that you now, being in a negative place cannot
6:45 pm
really achieve. so when you're positive and have faith in yourself, and have faith in god, so many great things happen, and i'm a testament to that. so i can't hide it, so yes. very briefly, black panther of course, the biggest film of the year at the us box office. how important at the us box office. how important a movie was it to cinema, culturally? it was important. it broke barriers. we continue to break barriers. we continue to make history, we are the first superhero found to be nominated at the high scores for best picture, which is amazing. so for us, itjust made that possibility, you know, just come to life. you know the ideas that everybody kept having for years, is this a possibility to have an all—black cast, is this, is it possible? and it is. to be a part of thatis possible? and it is. to be a part of that is amazing. thank you so much leticia back to you. lizo, thank you very much. the duke and duchess of cambridge arrived, they are making their way steadily up the steps, we knew that they were probably on
6:46 pm
their way. we could see the sign of a police escort, barry is being taken back, and yet, more whites. heavily pregnant last year, in a dark green gown with a black band around the middle, perhaps as a comment to recognise the two campaigns, times up and me too campaigns. a very different look for her. again, it's a real gown. it goes in, it comes out. it's a princess gown. quite beautiful. we talk about the baftas and the unique place in the world, you don't get them at the oscars. you don't get them at the oscars. you don't get royalty at the oscars. the red carpet, cate blanchett, bradley cooper, rami malek and they all waited. they held for the duchess of an dupe asking bench. it doesn't matter, we have the realfamily here. i imagine the oscars would
6:47 pm
only be too happy to have them. they could probably host the thing if they wanted to. well yes, indeed. it would be a little bit of a difficulty. how helpful is that to fashion designers to design address members of the real family? the visibility is amazing. whether you now, addressing somebody like that is an incredible visibility worldwide. everybody has their eyes on what she's wearing. you know? so, lots of people sell out of things immediately. yes, yes. megan markel, again, another great addition, particularly when she's wearing british designers. british designers, she's also taking a little bit of a move towards a more sustainable approach, which is god. so, ithink sustainable approach, which is god. so, i think you know, sustainable approach, which is god. so, ithink you know, you sustainable approach, which is god. so, i think you know, you are seeing, ithink so, i think you know, you are seeing, i think you see a huge amounts, particularly when they are on high street, particularly
6:48 pm
disappearing immediately. the royals are inside, that means we are on our way towards getting things started. although, there is a bit of a bottleneck here, as he said jason. the mums and dads, on sports day. we will see ronnie malik first kate blanchette and olivia come in. i don't i was going to win. my money is on rami malek, who looks slick in his ex data. we can see bradley cooper, traditionally dressed. sticking with the dress code of the night. his style is always interesting to me. he always looks really get on the red carpet, but he does always have a very traditional aspect to it. not a casual man, he always is just smart, always in his blue suit. he respects tradition. he's very, very fine of his british ideas. the british audience has supported him throughout career. he's been very successful here in uk, so he always comes there, works if uk stars, works with michael fassbender, gerald buser,. and he's very
6:49 pm
welcome. a lot of fans for him here tonight. we were talking among ago about the man who has done literally everything for roma. alfonso when we we re everything for roma. alfonso when we were talking to lizo. how much of a turn—up would it be, if aroma, a foreign language film in spanish and mexican dialect, if that tech best film. for me not a turn—up, because i think it's a masterpiece. i think if you said six months ago to meet as a black—and—white film that's going to be on netflix, it's an mexican, it will be best film, i would say no, that's too much of a risk. decide on the big screen? to me it looks like big cinema. then isign it to me it looks like big cinema. then i sign it at the london film festival on the dense cream, and it was wonderful on the big screen, there was so much going on, a lobster with class, his insurrection in the streets of revolution, all of this is going on to this child that we see. that's why think it's a
6:50 pm
brilliant film. lizo is with barry keown. yes i am. rising star and nominee. we have seen you in films. through to dunkirk. how has it been the last year, your career has exploded. yeah, i mean it's been almost a dream. dreamlike, isn't it? asi almost a dream. dreamlike, isn't it? as i was saying, i'm a fan boy to all these nominees. kristen bell, all these nominees. kristen bell, all of them. so it's cool talking here not be like oh i'm a big fan. it's a surreal experience. what's it like to get that nomination? i'm grateful. i'm really, really grateful. i'm really, really grateful. the nominees i'm up against as well, it's a win being here. so it's a win being here. any favourites you looking forward to it tonight? so are you hoping that when welding out? i hope he does well tonight, you know, because he's a great man, apart from a great man.
6:51 pm
what will be ceiling next? next, the last man the fx show. will it be exciting, tragic, give us some clues ? exciting, tragic, give us some clues? it will be unique. at that's got you, it's going to be dead. a rising star nominee, good luck. thank you. we have the, they've been allowed to move. that's bottleneck is finally getting way, the dip and duchess of cambridge are inside at the royal alberta, taking their seats. in the auditorium. waiting for everybody who has been held out here. they've been sort of corral, haven't they? it's a stampede of stars. i've never seen it's a stampede of stars. i've never seen it quite like this. there rachel weisz. rachel weisz. rachel weisz. rachel weisz there, the queen. she's wearing the queen. as we were talking about, she's the queen. absolutely. she looked quite
6:52 pm
beautiful. and very british. i found that is double nominated tonight. so there isa double nominated tonight. so there is a reference that, as my reference, like he said, she was keeping with the times that movement. a reference to the british pound, the british documentary that we will see later tonight. what are your sort of general observations about what the women on the red carpet to have chosen to go far? and of course, we are seeing some of the men breaking away from the traditional black. i think you're seeing really what's going on right now in fashion, you're going on right now in fashion, you' re really going on right now in fashion, you're really seeing people owning their own style, and saying this is who i their own style, and saying this is wholam, their own style, and saying this is who i am, this is who i'm going to wear. kate chose something much more understated for example. rachel weisz chose something much more frivolous, and quite beautiful. each of them said something about the woman of them said something about the woman who is wearing them. that is a certain confidence, that's coming through now, women choosing their own through now, women choosing their own clothes much more than being dictated to by designers. so we know
6:53 pm
we've got the duke and duchess of cambridge in here tonight, waiting to see these awards. how important is that for bafta to have them here? to have their patronage, it's huge. it's a world began, the visibility of the dress, what it does is it shows that the royal family are getting the seal of approval to the british awards. that's vital. it's a global industry, it might be impacted by brexit, more than any other industry. it's a huge draw for the transfer tax purposes, for americans forfashion the transfer tax purposes, for americans for fashion around the rug, and the baftas, which are a global hub. to have that seal of approval, that acknowledge from the royalfamily, approval, that acknowledge from the royal family, that this approval, that acknowledge from the royalfamily, that this is important. it's invaluable. james, jason solomon, fashion designer, thank you both for being with us on the red carpet tonight. 2a different categories, more than 100 nominations, we will bring you the results later on bbc news.
6:54 pm
nominations, we will bring you the results later on bbc news. seven so far this month we have seen damaging winds and snow. by contrast the week ahead, the forecast is looking much quieter. all down to this area of high pressure, building from the southwest on monday. it's orientation will change day by day, that means at times we will see some stronger winds. maybe some patchy light rain across parts of northern and west scotland, and northern ireland. for most underneath us, this area of high pressure will be mainly dry and feeling much milder. so we start the new week on a fairly quiet note. i wanted to showers across the eastern coast at press. fade away to leave plenty of sunshine across the uk, that sunshine across the uk, that sunshine tending to fade for the afternoon across northern ireland

and the western as a scotland as the cloud tends to scatter here. patchy dresses by the end of the day, the winds picking across the western isles, but otherwise the winds will be much later, and temperature up a notch compared to sunday, generally between seven and 11 celsius. as a going test tuesday, this area of high pressure becoming much more established across much of the uk, although the isobars closer together across northern ireland and scotland, this frontal system approaching from the northwest. it's running into an area of high pressure, so much running into an area of high pressure, so much of the rain will be quite late and patchy if we see any at all. perhaps i'm getting down to the far north of england by the afternoon, but outside, i mainly dry day, the rest of the sunshine across southern central eastern england between ten and 12 celsius. this mild theme continues as we going to win day. the area of high—pressure moving to the southeast of the uk, still enabling this mild south—westerly airflow to fight across us. bring cloud for
6:56 pm
wednesday, particularly across northern ireland, scotland, parts of northwest england, wales, south and went for a time. the best of the sunshine across central, eastern, and southern england, temperatures still ten — 12 celsius. some will change in wind direction on thursday. the area of high—pressure again drifting further east reds, and by that stage we will start to see more and by that stage we will start to see more of a southerly wind developing. that will enable some drierairto developing. that will enable some drier air to push across the uk, which means less in the way of cloud, and more in the way of sunshine. so we are looking to end at the wake on i dry and mostly sunny way. the further west you are, still mild, temperatures between 10-12dc. not still mild, temperatures between 10—12dc. not much change really, as we end the week apart from this frontal system. finally perhaps starting to make greater inroads south and east, so we will start the day dry and really quite sunny through the afternoon, particularly across northern and western scotland, northern ireland we will see scotland, northern ireland we will see the cloud gathering, maybe some patchy light rain here by the end of
6:57 pm
the day. elsewhere, bright, breezy, plenty of sunshine. yes, still mild. 10-12, plenty of sunshine. yes, still mild. 10—12, maybe even 13 celsius to enact celsius on friday afternoon. further ahead, thejet enact celsius on friday afternoon. further ahead, the jet stream wind high up in the atmosphere was not too much of the week thatjet high up in the atmosphere was not too much of the week that jet stream is to the north of the uk in the which enables the mild weather to continue. as we head towards the weekend and into next week, thatjet strea m weekend and into next week, thatjet stream starts to become a little bit more active and slide its way south and east rates, eventually that will allow these areas of low pressure to be more of a dominant feature. looks like the wettest weather will continue to be across northern and western parts of the uk, driest further south and east, but some su btle further south and east, but some subtle changes as we head into next week. bye—bye. this is bbc news, i'm rebecca jones. the headlines at 7pm. company bosses could face up to seven years in jail for mismanaging staff pension schemes under government plans.
